Summary

Drawing upon a six-year research project at the Stanford University Graduate School of Business, James C。 Collins and Jerry I。 Porras took eighteen truly exceptional and long-lasting companies and studied each in direct comparison to one of its top competitors。 They examined the companies from their very beginnings to the present day -- as start-ups, as midsize companies, and as large corporations。 Throughout, the authors asked: "What makes the truly exceptional companies different from the comparison companies and what were the common practices these enduringly great companies followed throughout their history?"

Filled with hundreds of specific examples and organized into a coherent framework of practical concepts that can be applied by managers and entrepreneurs at all levels, Built to Last provides a master blueprint for building organizations that will prosper long into the 21st century and beyond。

I gained a lot of new ideas from this book。 As with many books of this style, it presents ideas and then goes on to show the evidence that these ideas come from。 The evidence, although well researched, can make it a bit of a stodgy read at times。 Ultimately though, it was well worth my time reading it。

This book was in my reading list for a long time。 I am happy I have read it but I have not been overwhelmingly impressed by the book unlike the critiques I read。 The work done by the authors is commendable though (6 years of meticulous research across industries and companies) to come up with the framework: core ideology - core values & purpose + stimulate progress (BHAGs, cult-likes, internal succession…) + endured vision = visionary company。 Modern companies and leaders can surely learn a lot This book was in my reading list for a long time。 I am happy I have read it but I have not been overwhelmingly impressed by the book unlike the critiques I read。 The work done by the authors is commendable though (6 years of meticulous research across industries and companies) to come up with the framework: core ideology - core values & purpose + stimulate progress (BHAGs, cult-likes, internal succession…) + endured vision = visionary company。 Modern companies and leaders can surely learn a lot from the stories of these US visionary companies described in the book。 The good news is that it is never too late to become a visionary company。 It is hard work, like running a marathon but possible for all。 It does not take a genius idea to become one。 。。。more

A think the Epilogue tied a bow on this one really well。 Finding out who you are as a company outshines any predictions on where you think you’re going。 Holding truths to the core first and foremost will make a corporate structure last and maybe even be Visionary。 The concepts presented here, as the author states, will only become more important as the work landscapes continues to become more autonomous, partnered, and remote。

Gracie

An excellent read for anyone desiring to employ visionary and disciplined habits (regardless of whether applying to a business goal or personal goal)。

Finally, get to learn more about the BHAG concept from the source。 Reading this book in 2021 and looking at where are Motorola, General Electrics and IBM stand now (the visionary companies as per the book), wonder if there is a revised edition of this book that re-assess how such companies should innovate in the age of Information Revolution。 Once Microsoft, Amazon and Apple turn 50 would be interesting to read how they fit into the model of visionary companies。Favourite quote from the book:“If Finally, get to learn more about the BHAG concept from the source。 Reading this book in 2021 and looking at where are Motorola, General Electrics and IBM stand now (the visionary companies as per the book), wonder if there is a revised edition of this book that re-assess how such companies should innovate in the age of Information Revolution。 Once Microsoft, Amazon and Apple turn 50 would be interesting to read how they fit into the model of visionary companies。Favourite quote from the book:“If you put fences around people, you get sheep。” — William L。 McKnight, (1887-1978) Former 3M CEO 。。。more

Good book for individuals that strive to create a great business。 I've learned several useful things from it and discovered new ways of thinking about business structures。 Although it wasn't a great book by my standards and sometimes felt a bit overcomplicating and boring, I do appreciate the time and information that has been put into this book。 Both books in this series are equally good and should be read back to back for maximum value as they were written harmoniously。 Good book for individuals that strive to create a great business。 I've learned several useful things from it and discovered new ways of thinking about business structures。 Although it wasn't a great book by my standards and sometimes felt a bit overcomplicating and boring, I do appreciate the time and information that has been put into this book。 Both books in this series are equally good and should be read back to back for maximum value as they were written harmoniously。 。。。more

If you wonder what visionary companies do differently, then this book provides some glimpses。 It is so important for companies to reflect on core ideologies and then prepare a path for core purpose than just focusing on next customer, next competitor, next sales target。 With examples from 3M, HP, and other companies, it is clear that Being Successful doesn’t necessarily mean Visionary。 I spent more time in reflection than reading the chapters, however it was worth an effort。 Companies should ask If you wonder what visionary companies do differently, then this book provides some glimpses。 It is so important for companies to reflect on core ideologies and then prepare a path for core purpose than just focusing on next customer, next competitor, next sales target。 With examples from 3M, HP, and other companies, it is clear that Being Successful doesn’t necessarily mean Visionary。 I spent more time in reflection than reading the chapters, however it was worth an effort。 Companies should ask themselves what does come naturally to them (based on years of existence) and extract ideologies out of it。 This is an important step to know your strength/weakness as a company。 A good book to keep on shelf forever。 I gave a 4 star instead of 5 mainly because sometimes the chapters seem quite verbosely written。 。。。more

I may get a lot of flak for this, but this is such an overrated book, I was in awe。 After years of hearing this book referenced in a variety of books on business and entrepreneurship, I finally decided to pick it up after hearing that this book is research-based。 This book is the epitome of finding data that supports your hypothesis, but the authors tout it as simply writing about their findings。 I’m sure I’m scrutinizing this book a tad more than the average reader, but nobody who takes researc I may get a lot of flak for this, but this is such an overrated book, I was in awe。 After years of hearing this book referenced in a variety of books on business and entrepreneurship, I finally decided to pick it up after hearing that this book is research-based。 This book is the epitome of finding data that supports your hypothesis, but the authors tout it as simply writing about their findings。 I’m sure I’m scrutinizing this book a tad more than the average reader, but nobody who takes research seriously would agree that what Porras and Collins wrote was anywhere near the scientific standard。 If you’re looking for a self-help or motivational book to improve your work ethic or help you remember your core values, feel free to check this book out。 But this book is not what it’s advertised as and aside from being riddled with research flaws, the evidence is all anecdotal。 。。。more

I expected this to be another motivational business book。 Instead, it's a research paper, documenting the results of an exhaustive study of "visionary" companies。 Well written, and full of interesting anecdotal evidence to support findings。 I wish that some of the CEO's/Managers I've worked for had read this one。 Lots of examples of what works and what doesn't。 I expected this to be another motivational business book。 Instead, it's a research paper, documenting the results of an exhaustive study of "visionary" companies。 Well written, and full of interesting anecdotal evidence to support findings。 I wish that some of the CEO's/Managers I've worked for had read this one。 Lots of examples of what works and what doesn't。 。。。more

great narrative。 as a person who used to work for a visionary company and is building a start-up right now, there are a handful takeaways from Collins' work。 I worked for ExxonMobil right after college。 I know EM is not considered as visionary company by this book, but I do find it shares similar traits/characters with 3M, HP, Marriot。。。 I found deeply resonant with Collins' characterization of "fit or out as in cult-like culture", "BHAG", "home-grown management", and "core ideology"。 Admittedly great narrative。 as a person who used to work for a visionary company and is building a start-up right now, there are a handful takeaways from Collins' work。 I worked for ExxonMobil right after college。 I know EM is not considered as visionary company by this book, but I do find it shares similar traits/characters with 3M, HP, Marriot。。。 I found deeply resonant with Collins' characterization of "fit or out as in cult-like culture", "BHAG", "home-grown management", and "core ideology"。 Admittedly, I was not a believer in EM's values (part of reason why I left), but I am able to look at EM in a different lens after this book。I guess after two decades, things have changed quite a bit。 For example, Merck was beaten by Pfizer in the first decade of 21st century, and as of now (March 2021), Roche and J&J share the crown of pharmaceutical industry。 Yet, to defend Collins, 1) two decades are relatively short period of time, and there are always ups and downs in a company's business because of luck and chances, 2) the consistency of corporate governance observed by Collins could have changed in a few of these visionary companies。 I do think Collins cannot escape the pitfall of "rearview mirror" in this type of study。 Yet, he successfully makes a compelling case for why successfully habits lead to the success of a visionary company。 From my (limited) experiences of building a company, I agree a lot of points he has summarized。 。。。more

one key takeaway from this books is that it provides insights into company ideology and core values。 forcing a key ideology is important。 The example of Nordstrom is very interesting。Another key takeaway is that many great companies started from very simple ideas, and the leader should not be that important。 And visionary companies keep doing small experiments。It's probably worth re-visiting over and over again。 one key takeaway from this books is that it provides insights into company ideology and core values。 forcing a key ideology is important。 The example of Nordstrom is very interesting。Another key takeaway is that many great companies started from very simple ideas, and the leader should not be that important。 And visionary companies keep doing small experiments。It's probably worth re-visiting over and over again。 。。。more
