Summary

THE SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER

'A poignant, funny tale of early-thirties love and loss'
Sunday Times
__________________________________________________

Nina Dean has arrived at her early thirties as a successful food writer with loving friends and family, plus a new home and neighbourhood。 When she meets Max, a beguiling romantic hero who tells her on date one that he's going to marry her, it feels like all is going to plan。

A new relationship couldn't have come at a better time - her thirties have not been the liberating, uncomplicated experience she was sold。 Everywhere she turns, she is reminded of time passing and opportunities dwindling。 Friendships are fading, ex-boyfriends are moving on and, worse, everyone's moving to the suburbs。 There's no solace to be found in her family, with a mum who's caught in a baffling mid-life makeover and a beloved dad who is vanishing in slow-motion into dementia。

Dolly Alderton's debut novel is funny and tender, filled with whip-smart observations about relationships, family, memory, and how we live now。

3。5 stars: The plot frankly didn’t do it for me but the writing did。 I’m here for Dolly Alderton’s sharp wit and I’m adding more of her to my to-read list。

I'm not a massive reader of contemporary romance, but I feel this book was a lot more than that。 I listened to Ghosts as an audio book and really enjoyed it。 Two years ago I read Everything I Know About Love, also by Dolly Alderton, which I enjoyed but I definitely got on better with her fiction。 This was funny with very real characters and I was even tearful at points。 I finished this very quickly and would definitely recommend。 I love how Alderton spoke about dementia and also how she wrote ab I'm not a massive reader of contemporary romance, but I feel this book was a lot more than that。 I listened to Ghosts as an audio book and really enjoyed it。 Two years ago I read Everything I Know About Love, also by Dolly Alderton, which I enjoyed but I definitely got on better with her fiction。 This was funny with very real characters and I was even tearful at points。 I finished this very quickly and would definitely recommend。 I love how Alderton spoke about dementia and also how she wrote about women and their relationships with men and marriage。 For a genre I'm not too bothered by, I seriously enjoyed this and would definitely recommend。 。。。more

I’m really sorry to everyone who adores this book, but nope。 It was cheesy and far too girly for my liking。 I had no connection to the main character and quite frankly found it boring。 The 2 stars it did receive are for the beautiful relationship between Nina and her dad and Nina and Lola- both of which I thoroughly loved。 However, those relationships did not do enough to carry the book。 One of my least favourite books I’ve read in a long time, whoops to all I am about to upset with this one。

Smart and funny and emotional, loved it。 I must be right in the target demographic to get the references to Tinder bios, 90s music, changing friendship dynamics, and the special hell that is a hen’s weekend away 😂

I freaking adored this book! I couldn't get enough of it, gobbling the entire thing up in just a few sittings。 Nina George Dean, born August 3rd 1986, is the protagonist in Dolly Alderton's debut novel。 She's a highly relatable and witty food writer with one book out and two more on the way。 I got a good sense of who Nina was from the opening chapter, constructing an image of her in my mind as I thought about her moving around her Archway flat in London, or of her swimming in the rain in the lad I freaking adored this book! Chuffed this book is finally coming to Canada and the US。Avocado Diaries 。。。more

This novel far exceeded my expectations。 I was prepared for a light, cutesy rom-com and while many of the elements are present (the flighty sidekick, the seriously settled best friend with a superiority complex, the loveable ex-BF-turned-BFF), there was so much more to this story。 Told from the perspective of single, 30-something Nina, this novel is chock full of spot-on observations about life, love, friendship and family。 It was all so clever and relatable, like the notion that some friendship This novel far exceeded my expectations。 I was prepared for a light, cutesy rom-com and while many of the elements are present (the flighty sidekick, the seriously settled best friend with a superiority complex, the loveable ex-BF-turned-BFF), there was so much more to this story。 Told from the perspective of single, 30-something Nina, this novel is chock full of spot-on observations about life, love, friendship and family。 It was all so clever and relatable, like the notion that some friendships devolve into the type of relationship where you only ever want to go to the movies so you don’t actually have to interact with your friend after the obligatory catch-up chat during the previews。 There is nothing I love more than good, witty banter and this book did not disappoint。 There’s also an important subplot, where we see Nina come to terms with her father’s struggle with Alzheimer’s。 It’s a realistic and heartbreaking portrayal that took this book outside the realm of typical romantic comedies。I only have a few minor complaints – the one liner about pronouns on social media and scoffing at a woman who specified she/her when there was no danger of her ever being misgendered (Alderton’s words, not mine); the overabundance of references to George Michael; the fact that Nina was a food writer and the only thing she “cooked” in the entire course of a year was a plate of bananas smothered in condensed milk。 On the whole, I loved this book。 I loved that Nina was fully capable of standing on her own, and that she found fulfillment outside of the dating world。 Without giving anything away, I will say that parts of the story absolutely infuriated me, and I wanted to fling my Kindle across the room。 But it just goes to show you, sometimes you’ll find that Happily Ever After was right in front of you all along。Thank you to NetGalley and Knopf Doubleday for the ARC of this delightful novel。 。。。more

Dolly creates the same familiarity and comfort in her characters that I get from Bridget Jones。 I feel like her characters are so real and people we can clearly imagine。 Loved her first book and loved her second。 I found the end part with Angelo weird and a complete different style to the rest of the book。 It didn’t really sit well and it felt like it all happened too quickly。 But still, I loved the book and Dolly’s humour and philosophical thoughts around ghosts。 Definitely recommend reading

Fun and easy read that was comfortingly relatable。 Enjoyed explorations into female friendships, parent-child relationships in your 30s and the all-pervading grimness of gender inequalities

Absolutely LOVED this book! Dolly Alderton writes about life for women in their 20s/30s in a way no author compares to。 Everything I Know About Love was one of my tops last year, and I have no doubt this book will be in my favourites list this year!

This book is probably very relatable for some women。 Dating apps, being ghosted, finding and sometimes losing love。 I enjoyed the strong female presence in it。 I did find the first half of this book fairly slow and sort of choppy。 There were a decent amount of characters and I felt sometimes I wasn't sure who was who anymore。 The second half of the book picked up steam and I found myself really enjoying the pace, the stories of the different characters, and the little turn of events。 Then it end This book is probably very relatable for some women。 Dating apps, being ghosted, finding and sometimes losing love。 I enjoyed the strong female presence in it。 I did find the first half of this book fairly slow and sort of choppy。 There were a decent amount of characters and I felt sometimes I wasn't sure who was who anymore。 The second half of the book picked up steam and I found myself really enjoying the pace, the stories of the different characters, and the little turn of events。 Then it ended, I was a little disappointed because right when I started to enjoy the book I didnt get any sort of closure on our main character, her family, her downstairs or upstairs neighbors。 There seemed to be a hard build up, then a lack of follow through。 With that being said, I did enjoy the premise and the main story line I just felt there were too many side stories and the book was ended before it was all wrapped up。 Still a cute book and a quick read。 #Ghosts#Netgalley 。。。more

I'm a millennial who has a tough time with millennial novels。 I give them a shot, but for the majority of them I don't move past the ebook sample territory, mostly because often they're too up their own butt。 However, Ghosts has been - one could say- vetted by a number of my GR friends (varied tastes among them) and given the stamp of approval。 AND OHHH DO I AGREE。 Ghosts is not the most challenging novel of its ilk you'll read, but it has the perfect balance of darkness and lightness, with just I'm a millennial who has a tough time with millennial novels。 I give them a shot, but for the majority of them I don't move past the ebook sample territory, mostly because often they're too up their own butt。 However, Ghosts has been - one could say- vetted by a number of my GR friends (varied tastes among them) and given the stamp of approval。 AND OHHH DO I AGREE。 Ghosts is not the most challenging novel of its ilk you'll read, but it has the perfect balance of darkness and lightness, with just the right amount of millennial slickness for extra seasoning。 In other words, it's a book that doesn't take itself too seriously, but does its thing confidently。 A perfect (summer) page-turner candidate for sure。 。。。more

There are plenty of laugh-out-loud moments and wincingly accurate descriptions of online dating and life in your 30s。 I was also moved by the passages about Nina's family and her relationship with her father。 The narrator is, however, a touch too acerbic and cynical to be sympathetic and if you don't enjoy humour that has shades of mocking in it, then you may find it a bit uncomfortable at times。 The characters are incredibly well drawn however, you can't help but feel like you've spent time wit There are plenty of laugh-out-loud moments and wincingly accurate descriptions of online dating and life in your 30s。 I was also moved by the passages about Nina's family and her relationship with her father。 The narrator is, however, a touch too acerbic and cynical to be sympathetic and if you don't enjoy humour that has shades of mocking in it, then you may find it a bit uncomfortable at times。 The characters are incredibly well drawn however, you can't help but feel like you've spent time with real people。 And there is my review sandwich。 。。。more

Really enjoyed it and had one laugh out loud moment。 As a woman in her 30s there were times I could relate so much to Nina I wanted to cry, and times I just found Nina a bit too judgemental with experiences so culturally British that I couldn't empathise。 Overall beautifully written and an enjoyable journey to be taken on woman to woman。 Easy, sad, contemplative and touching。 I'd recommend it as a great summer read。 Really enjoyed it and had one laugh out loud moment。 As a woman in her 30s there were times I could relate so much to Nina I wanted to cry, and times I just found Nina a bit too judgemental with experiences so culturally British that I couldn't empathise。 Overall beautifully written and an enjoyable journey to be taken on woman to woman。 Easy, sad, contemplative and touching。 I'd recommend it as a great summer read。 。。。more

Not sure how I feel about this book。 Some parts were good and quick moving, and some were slow for me。 The story is about Nina, who is single and a food writer。 It's about her friends and their relationships, and the new people Nina meets。 Thanks to NetGalley and Knopf Doubleday Publishing Group for the advanced copy of this book。 Not sure how I feel about this book。 Some parts were good and quick moving, and some were slow for me。 The story is about Nina, who is single and a food writer。 It's about her friends and their relationships, and the new people Nina meets。 Thanks to NetGalley and Knopf Doubleday Publishing Group for the advanced copy of this book。 。。。more

Sigh。 I really wanted to love this book; been looking forward to reading it for months! And then! Oh no! What a flop。 I enjoyed Dolly Alderton's memoir, Everything I Know About Love, so perhaps I'm making an unfair comparison。 Perhaps I need a break from books which comment on modern relationships/dating/how awful men are。We meet Nina on her 32nd birthday。 At her party, her friends arrive in couples or excuse themselves to look after children; they're leaving London and settling down。 Her on Sigh。 I really wanted to love this book; been looking forward to reading it for months! And then! Oh no! What a flop。 I enjoyed Dolly Alderton's memoir, Everything I Know About Love, so perhaps I'm making an unfair comparison。 Perhaps I need a break from books which comment on modern relationships/dating/how awful men are。We meet Nina on her 32nd birthday。 At her party, her friends arrive in couples or excuse themselves to look after children; they're leaving London and settling down。 Her only single friend, Lola, introduces her to dating apps。 And so Nina meets Max, which is where the trouble really begins。The theme of 'ghosting' is explored - romantic relationships, friendships, memory, family, the works。 It's a vaguely interesting look at how modern life and relationships can be trivial, how deep connections are rare, and how it feels to be alone in your 30s (and beyond)。 Some of this commentary - particularly modern dating, and being a single woman in your 30s - was quite poignant。The narrative included the mundane parts of millennial life, which yeah I like, but also felt like it was trying to be quirky and kitsch。 And there were parts which were supposed to be funny? And others which were meant to be serious? Huh。 The writing seemed never seemed funny or serious in the extreme, it just pottered along。The main character, Nina, is unfortunately a bit。。。 empty。 She seemed like a generic millennial, a cut-out character。 I just couldn't connect with her。 Something which struck me half way through is that, although she's a celebrated food writer, we don't see much of her work/career。 OK so a person isn't defined by their career, but for a character that makes a LOT of comments about how her friends with children assume she just drifts through her days doing absolutely nothing。。。 that's how it comes across。 Oh, and Lola is such a bizarre sidekick, her entire character felt like a trope。Of the various plotlines (which felt kinda disjointed together?), I wasn't satisfied with how any of them were left。 But then again, that fits with the theme of ghosting。 My favourite sections (and I use the word 'favourite' in the very vaguest, lightest sense) were how Nina and her mum coped with her father's dementia, and how her friendships changed as they had adult lives of their own (eg Katherine)。 Nina really dishes out the judgement though。 The plotline with her rude neighbour was so far-fetched and unrealistic, and its conclusion just felt like ~everyone is misunderstood~ propaganda。Overall, a bit of a disappointment。 I liked the commentary on modern dating, and the range of female characters。 I liked the flaws and The writing was good, but the substance was lacking。 My resounding feeling was that this was a muddled book with a decent theme but a vague plot。 。。。more

I'll be honest - a few chapters into this one I really thought It wasn't for me。 I wasn't a fan of the tone or Nina's attitude, and if you feel the same while reading I urge you to keep reading。 I think my issue was that I agreed with Nina on a lot of things and saw her as bitter - which would mean I probably had some bitterness as well。 By the end, I came away thinking of this book as poignant and very funny。Dolly Alderton wrote about the millennial social circle with scary accuracy。 Especially I'll be honest - a few chapters into this one I really thought It wasn't for me。 I wasn't a fan of the tone or Nina's attitude, and if you feel the same while reading I urge you to keep reading。 I think my issue was that I agreed with Nina on a lot of things and saw her as bitter - which would mean I probably had some bitterness as well。 By the end, I came away thinking of this book as poignant and very funny。Dolly Alderton wrote about the millennial social circle with scary accuracy。 Especially when it came to the spectacle around wedding culture - I really felt her on that。 The tiny details are what really sold me on the story - like scoffing at the thought of someone having a dark side because they have a mug with an overused cliche written on it。 Those moments were so real and hilarious。Some of the themes in this reminded me a lot of Olive by Emma Gannon, so if you liked that one I'd recommend picking this one up! This one had a much more sad and cynical vibe than I thought Olive did, but it did leave me feeling hopeful and comforted about growing up and being present and happy with your life while still dreaming of something more。Thank you to NetGalley and Knopf Doubleday Publishing Group for the chance to read this book in exchange for an honest review! 。。。more

I’ll leave that to the reader。This book has been marketed as a romantic comedy, but as much as I liked it, and I really did for the most part, it feels like a mislabel。 It does have plenty of humor and charm, and Alderton’s writing is fantastic, but there’s an awful lot of sadness and tension in this for me to go along with that categorization。 Nina’s beloved father, Bill, recently diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, has a fair chunk of the story highlighting the disintegration of his thinking and personality, as well as Nina’s mother, Nancy’s, dysfunctional response to it。 Alderton did an amazing job of portraying it - and the stress it puts on the family - in a realistic light, but it was way too serious for a book marketed as comedy。 It felt like two competing stories happening … the one with Nina and Max and the one with Nina and her father。There are other issues happening in the book as well: the distancing relationship she has with her childhood best friend, Katherine, navigating friendship with her recently engaged ex-boyfriend, Joe, and her toxic relationship with her downstairs neighbor, Angelo。 Regarding Angelo, his inclusion in the book and an event involving him at the end, is my one big black mark against it, and I really can’t make sense of why the author went there, despite the book’s explanation。Plot and believability issues aside, I loved the writing and was completely engaged in the story, and I would absolutely read another book by this author。 I just hope the next time around is a little lighter!★★★ ½ (rounded to 4 for the excellent writing)This and all my other reviews can also be found on my blog: https://acuriouskatreads。blogspot。com/Thank you to Knopf Doubleday Publishing, Netgalley and author Dolly Alderton for this ARC in exchanged for my honest opinion。 This will be published August 3, 2021。 。。。more
