Summary

Reread to set the record straight after watching the TV series。 It was fun to be reminded of what really happened。

probably my first fantasy read that wasn't YA fantasy。Other than the Lord of the Rings, i don't think i could've started with a better book。 I loved the world building, characters, etc。 I also liked the lack of magic, which i thought was quite refreshing。I do wish that i hadn't seen the show before, as some of these events would've hit much harder not knowing that they were coming, such as (view spoiler)[the execution of Ed or even the fall of Bran。 (hide spoiler)] I would've enjoyed that, consi probably my first fantasy read that wasn't YA fantasy。Other than the Lord of the Rings, i don't think i could've started with a better book。 I loved the world building, characters, etc。 I also liked the lack of magic, which i thought was quite refreshing。I do wish that i hadn't seen the show before, as some of these events would've hit much harder not knowing that they were coming, such as (view spoiler)[the execution of Ed or even the fall of Bran。 (hide spoiler)] I would've enjoyed that, considering the fact that some of these events were truly heartbreaking, just watching the show。 Reading the book without knowing must've been so gut-wrenching, and it would've been nice to be able to enjoy Martin's writing on that level。But even having watched the series, knowing what would happen at all times, it was amazingly enjoyable。 。。。more

I’m not joking when I say this book has to go down as one of my all time favorites。 I CAN’T believe I waited this long。 I was wary going into such a long series with over 8 POVs (usually I barely like more than 2)。 I was so surprised that I loved every POV, every individual plot, and every character。 The story is so well thought out, and I’m convinced that George Martin is one of the most brilliant authors I’ve read。 The way he weaves the characters together, giving them such intense description I’m not joking when I say this book has to go down as one of my all time favorites。 I CAN’T believe I waited this long。 I was wary going into such a long series with over 8 POVs (usually I barely like more than 2)。 I was so surprised that I loved every POV, every individual plot, and every character。 The story is so well thought out, and I’m convinced that George Martin is one of the most brilliant authors I’ve read。 The way he weaves the characters together, giving them such intense descriptions that you are bound to feel connected to them, is artful。 I can’t say anything more but to read this book。 。。。more

this book greatly showed a number of different perspectives and characters in such great detail one would not think is possible。 the depth of the descriptions and plot line is incredible and somehow one can understand the atmosphere of this new land。 i would have given it 5 stars but, as expected with any multi-perspective book, there are characters that you simply couldn’t care less about (no offence Catelyn)。 therefore my attention was not 100%, 100% of the time。

I watched the series first before reading the book(s)。 This was the first one, obviously, and I got through it in 24 days。 I really like Martin's writing style。 He rarely lingers on unimportant details, does not describe landscapes or looks or smells forever, but enough to feel the situation and the people。 Yet he does repeat certain things — some people might not like that, but for a story as complex as A Song of Ice and Fire, this is actually very helpful (and so are the maps in the beginning, I watched the series first before reading the book(s)。 This was the first one, obviously, and I got through it in 24 days。 I really like Martin's writing style。 He rarely lingers on unimportant details, does not describe landscapes or looks or smells forever, but enough to feel the situation and the people。 Yet he does repeat certain things — some people might not like that, but for a story as complex as A Song of Ice and Fire, this is actually very helpful (and so are the maps in the beginning, and the character lists at the end of the book!)。I also noticed how extremely close the first season of Game of Thrones was to the book, many of the dialogues were taken over verbatim。 Quite few scenes were cut out or added in the HBO version。 But what really got me hooked both in the show and in the book was the complex world-building, the long history of Westeros and Essos, the intricate interrelation between the houses and their members。 Most of the characters really did have character and were really interesting (which doesn't mean one has to like everyone)。 I wonder if I will like the other books more or less, given that the level of fantasy will increase, and I'm not a big fantasy fan。Some parts of the story were a bit lengthy and difficult to follow, though: Robb's battles against the Lannisters (seen from both sides), the quarrels Catelyn has with everyone, and the last 2 or 3 chapters。 But I'm looking forward to the second book! 。。。more

I was 14 when I read this and can't help but say those scenes played a part in me being able to read these huge books everyday ,apart from that the world building was world-class and the anticipation for the dragons was real。 I was 14 when I read this and can't help but say those scenes played a part in me being able to read these huge books everyday ,apart from that the world building was world-class and the anticipation for the dragons was real。 。。。more

The first quarter of the book is quite arduous to understand。 It's because you are not accustomed to all those vocabulary or the various slang words used by the different houses。 But as the story takes place you will be so eager to move on to the next page as swiftly as possible。 This book takes you by surprise each time you turn your page。 The maverick, bold and challenging characters make you feel you are self-present in their act。https://novelreads07。blogspot。com/202。。。 The first quarter of the book is quite arduous to understand。 It's because you are not accustomed to all those vocabulary or the various slang words used by the different houses。 But as the story takes place you will be so eager to move on to the next page as swiftly as possible。 This book takes you by surprise each time you turn your page。 The maverick, bold and challenging characters make you feel you are self-present in their act。https://novelreads07。blogspot。com/202。。。 。。。more

This book is way too complicated to write a full review so I'll just say this : overall, it's a great story with an engaging plot and interesting characters。 Even though I went into it knowing a lot of spoilers, I still found it thoroughly entertaining。 It's not quite a five star book because of petty things, and also because of upsetting sexual content that didn't really need to be there。 Other than that, I loved this book, I loved the first season of the show, and I am excited to continue on w This book is way too complicated to write a full review so I'll just say this : overall, it's a great story with an engaging plot and interesting characters。 Even though I went into it knowing a lot of spoilers, I still found it thoroughly entertaining。 It's not quite a five star book because of petty things, and also because of upsetting sexual content that didn't really need to be there。 Other than that, I loved this book, I loved the first season of the show, and I am excited to continue on with the series。 。。。more

Let me tell you something, what a powerful way to end the first book of a series。 Especially one that promises so much。This an extraordinary masterpiece full of complex characters that live even more complex lives full of intrigues, lies and betrayals。 After writing a book like this, Martin can (and should) be praised for many things。 For the stunning, complex and absolutely unforgetable world that as its own story just like the characters。 For the intricate plot of conspiracies, lies, court int Let me tell you something, what a powerful way to end the first book of a series。 Especially one that promises so much。This an extraordinary masterpiece full of complex characters that live even more complex lives full of intrigues, lies and betrayals。 After writing a book like this, Martin can (and should) be praised for many things。 For the stunning, complex and absolutely unforgetable world that as its own story just like the characters。 For the intricate plot of conspiracies, lies, court intrigues and games of power that brings a whole new meaning to the expression "nothing is what it seems"。 But honestly, I think that most of all he should be praised for his characters。 Characters without whom the world would have no life, without whom the plot wouldn't be a quarter as interesting。 Dynamic, complex, credible characters that are all absolutely unique in their own way。 Characters that are so finely created you can't help but react to。 Either hating, dislike, adoring or absolutely loving。 Truth is, just like people in real life, I am pretty sure few are the characters in Game of Thrones that everyone feels the same about。 But, no matter what you feel, the point is you feel。 You can't stay indifferent when you read about them。 AND THEY ARE SO MANY。 More than anything, it's the massive amount of characters, all with their own traits, that proves of much Martin cares about the story。 It's the ultimate proof of his effort and the time he spent working on the book, because otherwise more than half the characters that showed up would have been forgotten or two-dimensional。 They are none。The book is not perfect, though。 But this is a difficult subject for me to talk, because even if on one side I think Martin didn't give the problem half the attention it deserved, on the other I don't think he really forgot it either。 I am talking about the way rape is dealt with in his story。 It's not because it was seen as normal in that time, that it needs to be so carelessly dealt with as it was。 It's not because it was seen as normal that having girls with 14 years marrying older men should be so carelessly dealt with。 Dany is the most evident example of what I am talking about。 All the first times when she had sex can and should be considered rape, because that's what it is。 Rape。 And Martin dealt with that so lightly, making her embrace, start enjoying and wanting and welcoming the sexual relationship with Drogo that bt the end of the book, I am sure many people have probably forgotten how it all started。 But then, I don't think it was Martin's intention to dealt with it so lightly。 I don't think he saw that as something normal or correct or that should be forgotten。 He was the one who made sure to remind the readers she was just 14 when she got pregnant when many had probably already forgotten。 And he did it in a way that left me with no doubts it was his way to show us he didn't agree。 His way of screaming it was wrong, without really putting it into words。 And later he does it again, with Mirri's character, his new way of reminding us rape isn't right。 But truth is, I highly doubt he will have approach the subject in the next books, show any impacts of what happened on Dany (even if I really wish I am wrong), not because he doesn't think that there's a problem, but because he doesn't know how after creating a world where all that is seen as normal。 Or at least, that's my opinion。 Even though I have more things I want to talk about (hell, I could stay up all night talking about it; I am so glad I decided to reread it before reading the second book), I will leave them for when I write the full review。Full review coming soon!
