Summary

Sylvia Earle first lost her heart to the ocean as a young girl when she discovered the wonders of the Gulf of Mexico in her backyard。 As an adult, she dives even deeper。 Whether she's designing submersibles, swimming with the whales, or taking deep-water walks, Sylvia Earle has dedicated her life to learning more about what she calls "the blue heart of the planet。" With stunningly detailed pictures of the wonders of the sea, Life in the Ocean tells the story of Sylvia's growing passion and how her ocean exploration and advocacy have made her known around the world。 This picture book biography also includes an informative author's note that will motivate young environmentalists。

This is an awesome book and story。 Great for talking about the environment, science, the ocean, etc。 I am going to pair it with Otis and Will Discover the Deep: The Record-Setting Dive of the Bathysphere from the Bluestem this year and The Watcher: Jane Goodall's Life with the Chimps to talk about observation and the environment。 This is an awesome book and story。 Great for talking about the environment, science, the ocean, etc。 I am going to pair it with Otis and Will Discover the Deep: The Record-Setting Dive of the Bathysphere from the Bluestem this year and The Watcher: Jane Goodall's Life with the Chimps to talk about observation and the environment。 。。。more

Children's book will encourage your child to explore the ocean and nature。I should't countthis as a challenge book, being so short。 However, I will give myself a break since it was totally unintentional that it turned out to be so short。 Children's book will encourage your child to explore the ocean and nature。I should't countthis as a challenge book, being so short。 However, I will give myself a break since it was totally unintentional that it turned out to be so short。 。。。more

This is a good easy book to do a book report for an autobiography on。 Easy for my kid to read。 It was a quick read for myself so I could help my kid with the book report。 The pictures are great。 She lead an amazing life for kids to get excited about if they like marine life or biology。

Her story is a fascinating one and I'm glad it's being told。 This is clearly well researched and the quotes from her are awesome, as is the environmental message in the end and in the back matter。I wish this were a little more approachable as a picture book。 The illustrations are lovely but the first page is a blue circle with a big block of text, it doesn't exactly ease you into the book。 I kind of wish the text was spread a little more evenly to avoid the big blocks。 The illustrations are swee Her story is a fascinating one and I'm glad it's being told。 This is clearly well researched and the quotes from her are awesome, as is the environmental message in the end and in the back matter。I wish this were a little more approachable as a picture book。 The illustrations are lovely but the first page is a blue circle with a big block of text, it doesn't exactly ease you into the book。 I kind of wish the text was spread a little more evenly to avoid the big blocks。 The illustrations are sweet and gentle, very noninvasive。 I kinda wish some of the fish in the illustrations were labeled。。。at one point the book talks about a parrot fish, my kid asked which was the parrot fish and I had no idea。 They are labeled in the back, but on that page it would have been nice。 。。。more

3。5 stars - the text is in the denser side。 My 4 year old daughter’s attention drifted here and there。 But we enjoyed this story of a brave and groundbreaking female scientist。

As the author's note points out, Earle's accomplishments weren't just amazing 'for a woman of her time' but for *any* marine scientist。 This is not a long biography, but it is gracefully told, and inspiring, with lovely art。 Includes an introduction, note, and bibliography。 As the author's note points out, Earle's accomplishments weren't just amazing 'for a woman of her time' but for *any* marine scientist。 This is not a long biography, but it is gracefully told, and inspiring, with lovely art。 Includes an introduction, note, and bibliography。 。。。more

The narrative of this book has a great way of not having too much information for making it boring for children but still having just enough information to teach students about Sylvia’s accomplishments。 The illustrations also show great accuracy with the ocean making it interactive for students to truly understand what the text is saying。 The information has a very thought out organization by starting the book with the importance of the ocean and then going into Sylvia’s childhood story and her The narrative of this book has a great way of not having too much information for making it boring for children but still having just enough information to teach students about Sylvia’s accomplishments。 The illustrations also show great accuracy with the ocean making it interactive for students to truly understand what the text is saying。 The information has a very thought out organization by starting the book with the importance of the ocean and then going into Sylvia’s childhood story and her story as an adult。 At the end of the book, there is an author's note that talks more intellectually about the importance of saving the ocean and her role as a woman in this work field。 This book was very engaging for me from the beginning of the book through the end I was able to understand everything that was happening。 Having her story from when she was a child to an adult really engages the reader。 This book would be great in the classroom during a science unit to teach about women in science。 This book was very deserving of the Orbis Pictus Award。 。。。more
