Such a gorgeous account of one long race。

This book made me want to race again, to endure the wide variety of emotions that cycling competitions have。 It is entertaining, picturesque and awakes your inner cyclist。

As a person who loves to ride my bike, this book has inspired me。 I will never look at cycling up (or down) a hill the same way again。This book is very interesting because I don't really have much appetite for modern "cycling" culture and I don't really follow things like the Tour de France, but this book seems to be from an era before all of the corruption and doping。 As a person who loves to ride my bike, this book has inspired me。 I will never look at cycling up (or down) a hill the same way again。This book is very interesting because I don't really have much appetite for modern "cycling" culture and I don't really follow things like the Tour de France, but this book seems to be from an era before all of the corruption and doping。 。。。more

I was given this book for my birthday back in February and had saved reading it until the start of the Tour。 It was worth the rate。 It is an incredible description of the mental state of a cyclist during the race, interspaced with flashbacks looking back at anecdotes in the past。 The book is very nicely written, with a great turn of phrase。 The opening is rightly famous, "。。。Vanaf terrasjes kijken toeristen en inwoners toe。 Niet-wielrenners。 De leegte van die levens schokt me。"。 ("Tourists and l I was given this book for my birthday back in February and had saved reading it until the start of the Tour。 It was worth the rate。 It is an incredible description of the mental state of a cyclist during the race, interspaced with flashbacks looking back at anecdotes in the past。 The book is very nicely written, with a great turn of phrase。 The opening is rightly famous, "。。。Vanaf terrasjes kijken toeristen en inwoners toe。 Niet-wielrenners。 De leegte van die levens schokt me。"。 ("Tourists and locals watched us from pavement cafés。 Non-cyclists。 The emptiness of those lives shocked me")。 He takes what starts as an apparently innocent observation and turns it on its head, showing how things can look completely different to a competitive cyclist。 In a sense he does that in the entire book, letting us into his world, in a very intimate way。 Much of the book consists of his thoughts as he battles his way along the route。 Some of the struggle will be familiar to anyone who has cycled long distances (perhaps also to runners), other aspects are very specific to competitive team cycling on the road。 The book is intense, short and I will be reading again for certain。 。。。more

This book will give you something different each time you return to it。 This time, I was most struck by the elegance of Krabbe's terse prose。 The rhythm of his writing pulls you right into the middle of the race。 On my ride this morning I confirmed that his descriptions of big efforts on the bike (particularly on the climbs) stand alone in the accuracy and intensity with which they capture the sensations connected with riding。 Such good writing。 Such a good translation。 This book will give you something different each time you return to it。 This time, I was most struck by the elegance of Krabbe's terse prose。 The rhythm of his writing pulls you right into the middle of the race。 On my ride this morning I confirmed that his descriptions of big efforts on the bike (particularly on the climbs) stand alone in the accuracy and intensity with which they capture the sensations connected with riding。 Such good writing。 Such a good translation。 。。。more

An English translation of a Dutch memoir; a literary sports classic of the seventies。 A tribute to the art of bicycle racing, Krabbé describes his transition from chess player and sports journalist to competitive rider and top endurance athlete – all interspersed within the pages of a 150-kilometer road race。 A thrilling ride not just for cyclists or athletes, but anyone who enjoys an inspiring read。

“The champions have better bikes, more expensive shoes, many more pairs of cycling shorts than we do, but they have the same roads”“Being a good loser is a despicable evasion, an insult to the sporting spirit。 All good losers should be barred from practicing a sport。”

Fantastic! Opening up this book is just like hopping on a bike -- you're in constant motion for the start, and feel the muscle ache and think the thoughts of a long distance racer。 Fantastic! This book lived up to it's reputation as the cyclist's Bible。 Really dramatic portrayal of a one day race and the highs and lows in it's duration。 It reminded me of my days as a bike racer。 We'd start with our course and I would win nearly every stage。 As we developed our talents, we made our stages longer but that only increased my winning distance。 It made no difference that I was 13 and my brother and his friends were 10 and 9, age is only a number。 I had the eye of the tiger and probably cou This book lived up to it's reputation as the cyclist's Bible。 Really dramatic portrayal of a one day race and the highs and lows in it's duration。 It reminded me of my days as a bike racer。 We'd start with our course and I would win nearly every stage。 As we developed our talents, we made our stages longer but that only increased my winning distance。 It made no difference that I was 13 and my brother and his friends were 10 and 9, age is only a number。 I had the eye of the tiger and probably could have made the Tour de France if I hadn't decided to go to Steubenville。 The Rider。。。。Four stars。 。。。more

It’s hard to describe to a non cyclist how suffering can be pleasurable。 This book is as real as it gets 😅 “I trained harder and harder。 My body began achieving things I’d no longer thought possible。 I was touched by its loyalty。”

Un poco demasiado intensito y grandilocuente, pero bien escrito。Solo para frikis de salir con la bicicleta o el ciclismo。

Without question the best of cycling literature。 I just reread this over the last fall, and it was better than I remembered。

The way the author captured the struggles of the mind during an endurance sport are amazing and feel so real。 However all the technical details of the sport were lost on me。 The writing style didn't excite me either- probably the result of not knowing the author's personality, the book being translated to English and me not knowing the details of this sport。 3。5/5 rounded to 3。 The way the author captured the struggles of the mind during an endurance sport are amazing and feel so real。 However all the technical details of the sport were lost on me。 The writing style didn't excite me either- probably the result of not knowing the author's personality, the book being translated to English and me not knowing the details of this sport。 3。5/5 rounded to 3。 。。。more

This is the story about a cycling race by a cyclist for cyclists,。。。 at least that's what I think。 The description of the race with all of its strategy, exertion, happiness, and pain makes you want to race, or at least watch a race。 ;) This is the story about a cycling race by a cyclist for cyclists,。。。 at least that's what I think。 The description of the race with all of its strategy, exertion, happiness, and pain makes you want to race, or at least watch a race。 ;) 。。。more

Heel leuk boek !

John

The best bike racing book ever, taking the reader through a 5 hour battle matching man against man, man against bike, and man against himself。

I'm not a cyclist。I read this book out of curiosity because a friend, who is a cyclist as well as an English literature graduate, declared it the best book he'd ever read。It is brilliant。 It gave me an understanding of the physical and mental endurance required to compete at the top level of cycling。 As well as the strategies employed by the competitors - turns out it isn't a case of cycling as fast as you can!It is also gripping, tense, has some memorable characters and is a quick read。 I'm not a cyclist。I read this book out of curiosity because a friend, who is a cyclist as well as an English literature graduate, declared it the best book he'd ever read。It is brilliant。 It gave me an understanding of the physical and mental endurance required to compete at the top level of cycling。 As well as the strategies employed by the competitors - turns out it isn't a case of cycling as fast as you can!It is also gripping, tense, has some memorable characters and is a quick read。 。。。more

A book describing 130km race should not take longer to read than the race itself。 It had some cool bits about cycling ethos though。 Overall, a good read from 1978。
