Summary

“I am hard pressed to think of another book that can match the combination of practical insights and reading enjoyment。”—Steven Levitt

Game theory means rigorous strategic thinking。 It’s the art of anticipating your opponent’s next moves, knowing full well that your rival is trying to do the same thing to you。 Though parts of game theory involve simple common sense, much is counterintuitive, and it can only be mastered by developing a new way of seeing the world。 Using a diverse array of rich case studies—from pop culture, TV, movies, sports, politics, and history—the authors show how nearly every business and personal interaction has a game-theory component to it。 Mastering game theory will make you more successful in business and life, and this lively book is the key to that mastery。

Nice case studies

It's boring and too smart for no reason。 It's great that the author knows what he's talking about, but it doesn't really mean that he can clearly explain his thinking。 Instead of a zillion of hard-to-follow impractical examples, unnecessary details, it would be just more useful if he could use real-world cases and pretend he's a human being, not a line of repetitive code。 It's boring and too smart for no reason。 It's great that the author knows what he's talking about, but it doesn't really mean that he can clearly explain his thinking。 Instead of a zillion of hard-to-follow impractical examples, unnecessary details, it would be just more useful if he could use real-world cases and pretend he's a human being, not a line of repetitive code。 。。。more

Some difficult sections to get through with dense explanations。 Those explanations are probably necessary to provide sufficient proof of the concept, but not a ton of fun to read。 I found the book to be very interesting and discovered some useful strategies for work and life。

Deep IntroductionGreat introduction to the concept。 The issue with game theory is it presupposes all actors are rationale calculators。 Would we be reading a book on how to calculate the optimal strategy if we truly were?

Demetrios Georgalas

The book is filled with questions that will get you to think twice before you make uour next decision, recipes to use game theory analysis in complicated situations, and examples that demonstrate the power of using game theory。

Ishan Deshpande

Decent。

Great book in this subject, great case studies, somewhat hard to read due to the nature of topics discussed。 I will read it again, when I have a case from real life in my mind。

Great book。 But a very tough or boring read for me。

I enjoyed this book which provides a primer to game theory applied to real life issues。 At a certain point, the book became a bit long winded。 But still this is a good book。 There are alternatives to this book。 If you bring a bit of patience you well find many applications and illustrations of game theory。 The mission of the book is making you thinking about human conduct and therefore make game theory accessible to the many。 At the end of the book, they suggest a wide range of books and other r I enjoyed this book which provides a primer to game theory applied to real life issues。 At a certain point, the book became a bit long winded。 But still this is a good book。 There are alternatives to this book。 If you bring a bit of patience you well find many applications and illustrations of game theory。 The mission of the book is making you thinking about human conduct and therefore make game theory accessible to the many。 At the end of the book, they suggest a wide range of books and other resources which is neat。 Overall this book deserves a four star rating。 。。。more

As a fan of game theory I love this book。 It tries to avoid going to in-depth on many topics, however there is if course some maths and calculations involved。 Withholding these, the book is informative of many different strategies that exist in the real world and helps to explain why things are the way they are。 I first read parts one and two in 2019, and wasn't able to pick the book back up to read part 3 until 2021, however I was able to blitz through each section with ease。 The content was en As a fan of game theory I love this book。 It tries to avoid going to in-depth on many topics, however there is if course some maths and calculations involved。 Withholding these, the book is informative of many different strategies that exist in the real world and helps to explain why things are the way they are。 I first read parts one and two in 2019, and wasn't able to pick the book back up to read part 3 until 2021, however I was able to blitz through each section with ease。 The content was entertaining and enlightening, filled with examples, case studies, and thought experiments。 As the book states, the only reason I wouldn't recommend this book was if you were my rival。 。。。more

A highly informative read where you really get out what you put in。 The case studies and "trips to the gym" provided were serious challenges when you try to apply the learnings from the material, all of them unique, but together showing the many applications of game theory。 It is this mental reaching, working to think many moves ahead, to anticipate what your opponent will anticipate, where the work shows its value。 It got me to think about the everyday applications of game theory and how near e A highly informative read where you really get out what you put in。 The case studies and "trips to the gym" provided were serious challenges when you try to apply the learnings from the material, all of them unique, but together showing the many applications of game theory。 It is this mental reaching, working to think many moves ahead, to anticipate what your opponent will anticipate, where the work shows its value。 It got me to think about the everyday applications of game theory and how near every interaction is a game to be played to some extent。 It is at times a dense read which requires revisits to uncover more of its revelations。 。。。more

Very accessible look into game theory for those who are intimidated by the math associated with the subject。 This is a subject I always find valuable because game theory applies to every decision we make in life。

Alejandro Hardziej

Interesting, but not an easy read。 The authors try to explain the concept of Game Theory with practical examples and case studies about things we can easily relate to (weight loss, nuclear war threats, cheating in exams, buying a used car, etc。)。 Despite the efforts to make explanations simple, the book still requires focused attention from the reader to follow the underlying logic and some occasional math。 Thus, this is not the ideal book for bedtime or relaxed reading。

David Shaw

One of the most interesting books I have ever read

Matt

I listened to the audio book for this and would highly recommend reading a physical copy。 Many references to graphs and tables makes entire sections incomprehensible and valueless。

Great examples of game theory in real life。

I'm a total noob at game theory, so I don't know what to compare with, but it was so fun to read!Works fine as a general introduction to game theory, soft math, and entertaining examples。The detailed list of recommendations at the end of the book is interesting to continue。 I'm a total noob at game theory, so I don't know what to compare with, but it was so fun to read!Works fine as a general introduction to game theory, soft math, and entertaining examples。The detailed list of recommendations at the end of the book is interesting to continue。 。。。more

Great general overview of game theory written in easy to understand prose。 This really is a general review, though。 It will most appeal to someone interested in an overview。 Those interested in applications of game theory to business strategy or negotiations will find relevant passages throughout。 If that's all you're after, a more specific book may make for a more efficient read。 Great general overview of game theory written in easy to understand prose。 This really is a general review, though。 It will most appeal to someone interested in an overview。 Those interested in applications of game theory to business strategy or negotiations will find relevant passages throughout。 If that's all you're after, a more specific book may make for a more efficient read。 。。。more

This book is about strategic behavior。 All of us are strategists, whether we like it or not。 It is better to be a good strategist than a bad one, and this book aims to help you improve your skills at discovering and using effective strategies。

The idea were interesting, but some of the examples were on the complicated side。 I took a ‘game theory’ subject in university so was familiar with most of the concepts already。

I don't understand how people can enjoy this book。 Heard good things about it, came with high hopes, ended up dropping it after 100 pages。 Examples are too pinpoint and I can't see how the principles can be applied on a more complex, real life situations。Most of these methods are already too obvious to begin with, and don't seem to have a lot with actual game theory。 I don't get why waste 500 boring pages on something you could read a summary of。The writing itself is a drag。 Get something better I don't understand how people can enjoy this book。 Heard good things about it, came with high hopes, ended up dropping it after 100 pages。 Examples are too pinpoint and I can't see how the principles can be applied on a more complex, real life situations。Most of these methods are already too obvious to begin with, and don't seem to have a lot with actual game theory。 I don't get why waste 500 boring pages on something you could read a summary of。The writing itself is a drag。 Get something better to waste your time on。。。 。。。more

Was assigned this book for a game theory class and felt the examples were really helpful to grasp the ideas。 I think all MBAs and people in strategy should read this book as it provides helpful tips in influencing others and winning。

There were some very interesting parts, but I lost it at the calculations。 I recommend it to someone who likes math and not as a fun read。

Overview of game theory concepts and strategies for most common types of game situations, including signaling, threats, promises, credibility, etc。 A bit of slog to read。 Did not finish all the way through。
