Summary

TWO CRIME FAMILIES, ONE SOURCE OF POWER: JADE。

Jade is the lifeblood of the city of Janloon - a stone that enhances a warrior's natural strength and speed。 Jade is mined, traded, stolen and killed for, controlled by the ruthless No Peak and Mountain families。

When a modern drug emerges that allows anyone - even foreigners - to wield jade, simmering tension between the two families erupts into open violence。 The outcome of this clan war will determine the fate of all in the families, from their grandest patriarch to even the lowliest motorcycle runner on the streets。

Jade City is an epic tale of blood, family, honour, and of those who live and die by ancient laws in a changing world。

Creo que es una buena historia, sobre todo por la guerra entre familias y eso, más el jade, pero simplemente no me fascinó la historia。 Aunque le tomé cariño a algunos personajes。

4。25 only cause I feel like it could (and I know it will) get better in the next books。I will also probably gonna do a rr of this, with a much faster pacing。 Think I exhausted the excitement because of the prolonged (very) slow reading (I was busier than usual this month)。

The Godfather meets political fantasy and it’s sooo good! Very well written main characters and side characters and a great unique setting。 Fonda Lee had me engaged and invested from the first chapter

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 4。5 stars-I feel that this book was not well served by it's cover art, because even though I've seen it everywhere, I thought it was going to be an Asian-inspired YA adventure, but I severely underestimated it。 This book has so much action, intrigue, emotional resonance and magic packed into it。 Lan's death was unexpected, but it definitely pushed the plot forward with Shae coming back into the Green Bone fold and Hilo having to step into the Pillar position, despite being unsuited to it。 Lee di 4。5 stars-I feel that this book was not well served by it's cover art, because even though I've seen it everywhere, I thought it was going to be an Asian-inspired YA adventure, but I severely underestimated it。 This book has so much action, intrigue, emotional resonance and magic packed into it。 Lan's death was unexpected, but it definitely pushed the plot forward with Shae coming back into the Green Bone fold and Hilo having to step into the Pillar position, despite being unsuited to it。 Lee did an incredible job of creating a vibrant, lived-in world without overwhelming the reader。 I love this story and cannot wait to see what happens next! 。。。more

Good。 I love the world and characters, a unique take on a fantasy world that is well built and feels lived in, and the characters feel like a product of the world that they both are informed by and can't escape from, as well as verbal for both the plot and themes。 The plot is well constructed and paced with a variety of character arcs that come together in a satisfying way, and the sequel is even better。 Good。 I love the world and characters, a unique take on a fantasy world that is well built and feels lived in, and the characters feel like a product of the world that they both are informed by and can't escape from, as well as verbal for both the plot and themes。 The plot is well constructed and paced with a variety of character arcs that come together in a satisfying way, and the sequel is even better。 。。。more

An audio listen because I had fomo! Read the blurb to get the general jist of the storyline but basically we follow the Kaul family that uses jade as a source of power。 It was a story about honour, loyalty, corruption and family which certainly does not shy away from the violence and vileness of the their world。 There was so much character development I felt like I actually knew them, it was glorious! Shea was definitely my fave along with Wen who I hope plays a bigger part in the next book。 I a An audio listen because I had fomo!

I'm dnfing at the middle。 Not happily because the premise was interesting at first。 There's little to no worldbuilding, bland characters, a magic system that's so faintly presented I can't grasp。 I actually like the idea of a magic system that is not the main focus of the plot, but in JC the focus was on the material that granted power, not the power itself。 Which is not what I was expecting。 Also, I tried this time and I'm really not a fan of urban fantasy。 Maybe this novel wasn't the greatest I'm dnfing at the middle。 Not happily because the premise was interesting at first。 There's little to no worldbuilding, bland characters, a magic system that's so faintly presented I can't grasp。 I actually like the idea of a magic system that is not the main focus of the plot, but in JC the focus was on the material that granted power, not the power itself。 Which is not what I was expecting。 Also, I tried this time and I'm really not a fan of urban fantasy。 Maybe this novel wasn't the greatest example。 Where was the urban? Where was the technology? The world held embarrassingly no resemblance to a contemporary period。 Like many features in this novel, most of them were barely on the page。 。。。more

Wow, this book was so good! The setting is really original — a modern Asian-inspired city — and it reads like a crime/mafia novel more so than a fantasy one。 There could’ve been a bit more worldbuilding involving the specifics of jade, but nevertheless, the strong characters make up for this absence。 This is the kind of urban fantasy I’d like to see。 It takes aspects from both Eastern and Western media, and combines them into something entirely new。

I'm that person who never gets tired of The Godfather movies。 So, Jade City and I are a match made in heaven。 I loved the combat scenes, the political intrigue and the family/sibling dynamics。 I also love the Own Voices aspect of a nonEuropean fantasy political thriller。 I highly recommend and will be reading Jade War soon。 I'm that person who never gets tired of The Godfather movies。 So, Jade City and I are a match made in heaven。 I loved the combat scenes, the political intrigue and the family/sibling dynamics。 I also love the Own Voices aspect of a nonEuropean fantasy political thriller。 I highly recommend and will be reading Jade War soon。 。。。more

Awesome! I love this book。 Jade City is a marvelous example of great worldbuilding meeting non-stop action。 The characters are all well-drawn and relatable and the martial arts scenes are amazing。 The best part of it, though, is the worldbuilding。 Lee does a fantastic job of creating a detailed and completely believable world here, right down to the smog floating over Janloon。 I am a huge fan of both Jade City and its sequel, Jade War, and can't wait for Jade Legacy。 Awesome! 3。6⭐️Really enjoyed the concept and execution。 It was slow at the beginning but picked up。 Only very slightly overhyped。 I’m excited for the rest of the series!

This is definitely a case of it’s me, not the book。 I absolutely hate mafia stories, I avoid many POVs as I usually get confused, and the addictiveness of the magic is an element I dislike。 However, the hype was real and many people recommended it, so I gave it a shot when the ebook was less than an euro。 And I have to say, the writing is wonderful and I think it’s worth the hype if you like these kind of stories。 It sucked me into the story, it has great pacing and I kept turning pages but afte This is definitely a case of it’s me, not the book。 I absolutely hate mafia stories, I avoid many POVs as I usually get confused, and the addictiveness of the magic is an element I dislike。 However, the hype was real and many people recommended it, so I gave it a shot when the ebook was less than an euro。 And I have to say, the writing is wonderful and I think it’s worth the hype if you like these kind of stories。 It sucked me into the story, it has great pacing and I kept turning pages but after a while I just wasn’t feeling it。 The plot itself isn’t working for me because I didn’t care about it at all and reading began to feel like a chore instead of fun so I quit。 。。。more

I've finished reading Jade City by Fonda Lee。 4。5/5 stars。 I do enjoy it quite more than the Poppy War, the Chinese-ish gangster aspect of the novel was written really well, the jade magic system is interesting, and I do liked most of the characters (although I didn't like Anden that much)。 There were some unexpected deaths though, that's for sure。 I don't think I'm going to jump into the sequel just yet, maybe I'll wait for the last book to come out first, since the first book itself seemed kin I've finished reading Jade City by Fonda Lee。 4。5/5 stars。 I do enjoy it quite more than the Poppy War, the Chinese-ish gangster aspect of the novel was written really well, the jade magic system is interesting, and I do liked most of the characters (although I didn't like Anden that much)。 There were some unexpected deaths though, that's for sure。 I don't think I'm going to jump into the sequel just yet, maybe I'll wait for the last book to come out first, since the first book itself seemed kind of stand alone-ish as well。 。。。more

Love seeing more and more asian-inspired fantasty novels written by asian authors gain popularity in western audiences。 Beneath a mafia/clan warfare driven plot, Lee explores how strongly collectivism drives sociocultural norms by demonstrating, for example, consequences of feeling indebted to family and pressures to uphold familial values。 One plot line at the end felt out of character and convenient, but I suspect the implications of *that event* will fuel the next book。 Great fantasy debut ov Love seeing more and more asian-inspired fantasty novels written by asian authors gain popularity in western audiences。 Beneath a mafia/clan warfare driven plot, Lee explores how strongly collectivism drives sociocultural norms by demonstrating, for example, consequences of feeling indebted to family and pressures to uphold familial values。 One plot line at the end felt out of character and convenient, but I suspect the implications of *that event* will fuel the next book。 Great fantasy debut overall 。。。more
