Summary

At the end of the nineteenth century, three revolutionary women fight for freedom in New York Times bestselling author Chanel Cleeton’s captivating new novel inspired by real-life events and the true story of a legendary Cuban woman–Evangelina Cisneros–who changed the course of history。

A feud rages in Gilded Age New York City between newspaper tycoons William Randolph Hearst and Joseph Pulitzer。 When Grace Harrington lands a job at Hearst’s newspaper in 1896, she’s caught in a cutthroat world where one scoop can make or break your career, but it’s a story emerging from Cuba that changes her life。

Unjustly imprisoned in a notorious Havana women’s jail, eighteen-year-old Evangelina Cisneros dreams of a Cuba free from Spanish oppression。 When Hearst learns of her plight and splashes her image on the front page of his paper, proclaiming her, “The Most Beautiful Girl in Cuba,” she becomes a rallying cry for American intervention in the battle for Cuban independence。

With the help of Marina Perez, a courier secretly working for the Cuban revolutionaries in Havana, Grace and Hearst’s staff attempt to free Evangelina。 But when Cuban civilians are forced into reconcentration camps and the explosion of the USS Maine propels the United States and Spain toward war, the three women must risk everything in their fight for freedom。

Great subject, a different historical era

This is the 2nd of Cleeton's historical novels about Cuba that I have read and enjoyed。 She researches the history behind the book thoroughly。 Admittedly I am a little obcessed about Cuba。 visiting there is high on my bucket list。 Romance may be an integral part of the story in order to fictionalize - and some of which was based on a facts - but I thought a little sappy。 Otherwise I would give this a 5。 I am sure I will get to the her other books。 This is the 2nd of Cleeton's historical novels about Cuba that I have read and enjoyed。 She researches the history behind the book thoroughly。 Admittedly I am a little obcessed about Cuba。 visiting there is high on my bucket list。 Romance may be an integral part of the story in order to fictionalize - and some of which was based on a facts - but I thought a little sappy。 Otherwise I would give this a 5。 I am sure I will get to the her other books。 。。。more

A sweeping story that draws you in and won’t let you put the book down。

What I love about historical fiction is that readers are transported to another era and the characters bring the past to life。 The fact that "The Most Beautiful Girl in Cuba" was inspired by actual events created a deeper connection to the courageous women。 Chanel Cleeton pens novels set in Cuba that educate and entertain。 We touched on Cuba's history in high school but I didn't understand the gravity of the situation。 Evangelina Cisneros became the face of the revolution but citizens risked the What I love about historical fiction is that readers are transported to another era and the characters bring the past to life。 The fact that "The Most Beautiful Girl in Cuba" was inspired by actual events created a deeper connection to the courageous women。 Chanel Cleeton pens novels set in Cuba that educate and entertain。 We touched on Cuba's history in high school but I didn't understand the gravity of the situation。 Evangelina Cisneros became the face of the revolution but citizens risked their lives to make a difference。 The women portrayed in this novel created change in their own ways。 Feisty Grace Harrington set her sights on becoming a journalist despite society's expectations。 Marina Perez put herself in danger to courier messages and Evangelina planned a daring escape that triggered the United States' war effort。 “And far at the end of this journey we must travel alone, there is the terror I cannot face, for the possibility of it is too horrible to even contemplate—” The Most Beautiful Girl in Cuba 。。。more

If you could, I would have given this book a 3。5。 Good historical fiction read from a learning perspective。 Most books I've read on Cuba were more current focusing on the Castro regime。 This book goes back to the Spanish reign over Cuba。 One thing that is consistent: Cubans have been fighting for freedom and independence for years。 There are three female central characters in this book; Grace an up and coming reporter for Hearst newspapers in New York, Evangelina, a wealthy Cuban who loses her f If you could, I would have given this book a 3。5。 Good historical fiction read from a learning perspective。 Most books I've read on Cuba were more current focusing on the Castro regime。 This book goes back to the Spanish reign over Cuba。 One thing that is consistent: Cubans have been fighting for freedom and independence for years。 There are three female central characters in this book; Grace an up and coming reporter for Hearst newspapers in New York, Evangelina, a wealthy Cuban who loses her freedom when she refuses to succumb to Spanish rule, and Marina, a Cuban who fights for freedom and her family。 Their stories are unique and each give a different perspective on the Cuban crisis。 They come together at the end of the book but for me I think they could have been better connected。 Another sub -story was the newspaper business and circulation battle between Hearst and Pulitzer in the early 1900s in New York City。 As a long time veteran in the media business I was very critical of the book's perspective on the media。 It was portrayed as "fake news" with no integrity and a business that cares only about profit。 This is not the business I know。 The war for readership was highlighted。 I wondered how much of Hearst's life was true and how much was fictionalized。 All in all interesting。 I liked Chancel Cleeton's other books better。 。。。more

Oh my heart。 The Most Beautiful Girl in Cuba hit me right in the feels。 RIGHT IN THE FEELS。 Chanel Cleeton eloquently writes three different stories of three independently strong revolutionary women caught in the fight for Cuban independence right before the Spanish-American war。 I was instantaneously hooked。 I could not put the book down。 I became OBSESSED。 All three stories were just so equally compelling for different reasons; however, Grace's story may have been my favorite。 The Most Beautif Oh my heart。 The Most Beautiful Girl in Cuba hit me right in the feels。 RIGHT IN THE FEELS。 Chanel Cleeton eloquently writes three different stories of three independently strong revolutionary women caught in the fight for Cuban independence right before the Spanish-American war。 I was instantaneously hooked。 I could not put the book down。 I became OBSESSED。 All three stories were just so equally compelling for different reasons; however, Grace's story may have been my favorite。 The Most Beautiful Girl in Cuba is a love story of all kinds of love: love for country, romantic love, motherly love, family love。 It's simply exquisite。 。。。more

This book was fascinating and a great blend of the Perez family further back and the Cuban history, role of the US and "yellow" journalism in the war。 I look forward to more books about this family and history of Cuba。 This book was fascinating and a great blend of the Perez family further back and the Cuban history, role of the US and "yellow" journalism in the war。 I look forward to more books about this family and history of Cuba。 。。。more

I really love Cleeton's works, and this story is no different。 The characters and love stories are all different。This one felt a little preachy。 Maybe it's because one of the MCs is an aspiring journalist。 Maybe it's the parallels to today。 It's still good, but some of the dialogue or inner voice felt like they were too much。 I really love Cleeton's works, and this story is no different。 The characters and love stories are all different。This one felt a little preachy。 Maybe it's because one of the MCs is an aspiring journalist。 Maybe it's the parallels to today。 It's still good, but some of the dialogue or inner voice felt like they were too much。 。。。more

I love historical fiction, especially when it centers on stories I know very little about。 The Most Beautiful Girl in Cuba takes place right before the Spanish-American War and revolves around three women。 Evangelina Cisneros (a real person) is unjustly imprisoned in the Casa de Recogidas, the infamous women's prison in Havana。 Her story is the one that captures New York newspapers' attention and propels the United States into war。 Marina Perez (the same Perez family from Cleeton's other novels) I love historical fiction, especially when it centers on stories I know very little about。 The Most Beautiful Girl in Cuba takes place right before the Spanish-American War and revolves around three women。 Evangelina Cisneros (a real person) is unjustly imprisoned in the Casa de Recogidas, the infamous women's prison in Havana。 Her story is the one that captures New York newspapers' attention and propels the United States into war。 Marina Perez (the same Perez family from Cleeton's other novels) is a revolutionary who abandoned her wealthy family for the love of her husband。 She acts as a courier in an attempt to bring Cuba the freedom it has long desired。 Grace Harrington is a reporter for the New York Journal who longs to be another Nelly Bly。 I was captivated by each woman's story and how they are willing to fight for their beliefs。 I highly recommend this one!I received an advance reader copy of this title from the publisher。 。。。more

I binged the audiobook for this one and was completely hooked on the stories of the three women and their various adversities and romances。 At times I found it overwritten, especially when it came to the theme of the plight of women and the characters' emotions in some scenes, but overall I had never read anything about this setting or time in history so I enjoyed the ride。 I binged the audiobook for this one and was completely hooked on the stories of the three women and their various adversities and romances。 At times I found it overwritten, especially when it came to the theme of the plight of women and the characters' emotions in some scenes, but overall I had never read anything about this setting or time in history so I enjoyed the ride。 。。。more

While I have only read one other title of Ms Cleeton's - this title pales in comparison。 The bare bones of it were just that - bare bones。 It felt like much was left to be said about the descriptions of characters and the interior dialogue and it times they stories of the individual characters felt disjointed to me。 I felt as though a lot was left out and it could have been so much more intriguing if the author would have added more to the basic story。 🤷‍♀️ It won't stop me from reading the rest While I have only read one other title of Ms Cleeton's - this title pales in comparison。 The bare bones of it were just that - bare bones。 It felt like much was left to be said about the descriptions of characters and the interior dialogue and it times they stories of the individual characters felt disjointed to me。 I felt as though a lot was left out and it could have been so much more intriguing if the author would have added more to the basic story。 🤷‍♀️ It won't stop me from reading the rest of the titles。 What can I say? 。。。more

Essentially there are three main characters to this book - Grace, an aspiring New York reporter, Marina, a former Cuban socialite whose has become a revolutionist, and Evangelina, daughter of an important Cuban figure whose has been imprisoned in a notorious women's jail。 Set in the 1890's during Cuba's revolt against Spanish occupation, forces come together to free Evangelina, and capture the sympathies of Americans to encourage their support for Cuba。I found the book interesting only in that I Essentially there are three main characters to this book - Grace, an aspiring New York reporter, Marina, a former Cuban socialite whose has become a revolutionist, and Evangelina, daughter of an important Cuban figure whose has been imprisoned in a notorious women's jail。 Set in the 1890's during Cuba's revolt against Spanish occupation, forces come together to free Evangelina, and capture the sympathies of Americans to encourage their support for Cuba。I found the book interesting only in that I knew nothing of Cuba's fight for independence, but the majority of the characters were not engaging to me, and predictable in storyline。 。。。more

Well, something was missing here。 I can not really say what exactly was missing, but, in comparison to the other books I read by Cleeton, this one fell short。 I liked the history notion, that the focus was on some historical event, I had next to no knowledge about。 I also liked the characters。 But I was not really swept up, as I normally am with her stories。 It is a good story and a beautifully written book, though。

Gretchen

I think this is my favorite of Chanel Cleeton’s books。 The perfect balance of history, romance, and strong women。

3。5 stars。 I liked this book mostly because of the history that I learned。 Learning about the battle for Cuban independence from Spain and the corresponding Spanish/American War was eye opening for me。 Whatever I may have been taught about it in school didn't stay with me, so 。 。 。 As for the story, the characters were interesting, but there wasn't a lot of depth to them so I had trouble connecting。 Also, I don't understand why every woman has to have a romantic interest。 What are we telling our 3。5 stars。 I liked this book mostly because of the history that I learned。 Learning about the battle for Cuban independence from Spain and the corresponding Spanish/American War was eye opening for me。 Whatever I may have been taught about it in school didn't stay with me, so 。 。 。 As for the story, the characters were interesting, but there wasn't a lot of depth to them so I had trouble connecting。 Also, I don't understand why every woman has to have a romantic interest。 What are we telling our daughters and young women 。 。 。 that they are not complete without a man? I have read all the other Cuba books。 I raved about them and found them unputdownable。 I couldn’t get into this book from the start。 I love Cuba with all my heart and the historical piece of it would have been very interesting had I not had to force myself to read and finish the book。 I found that it jumped all over the place and it was difficult to follow the storylines。 I also found that the story was drowned out in the endless explaining and technical descriptions。 This may be an unpopular op I have read all the other Cuba books。 I raved about them and found them unputdownable。 I couldn’t get into this book from the start。 I love Cuba with all my heart and the historical piece of it would have been very interesting had I not had to force myself to read and finish the book。 I found that it jumped all over the place and it was difficult to follow the storylines。 I also found that the story was drowned out in the endless explaining and technical descriptions。 This may be an unpopular opinion but this is definitely my least fave of this series of books。 。。。more

Through the eyes of three women, a U。S。 female reporter, a female Cuban undercover resistance fighter, and a high society Cuban woman jailed for a crime, we discover some of the history of the Cuban people’s fight for independence at the end of the 19th century, their oppressed living conditions, and how the U。S。 got involved。 I loved the historical details but with three main characters I was challenged with the first-person perspective。
