Summary

When Rin aced the Keju — the Empire-wide test to find the most talented youth to learn at the Academies — it was a shock to everyone: to the test officials, who couldn’t believe a war orphan from Rooster Province could pass without cheating; to Rin’s guardians, who believed they’d finally be able to marry her off and further their criminal enterprise; and to Rin herself, who realized she was finally free of the servitude and despair that had made up her daily existence。 That she got into Sinegard — the most elite military school in Nikan — was even more surprising。

But surprises aren’t always good。

Because being a dark-skinned peasant girl from the south is not an easy thing at Sinegard。 Targeted from the outset by rival classmates for her color, poverty, and gender, Rin discovers she possesses a lethal, unearthly power — an aptitude for the nearly-mythical art of shamanism。 Exploring the depths of her gift with the help of a seemingly insane teacher and psychoactive substances, Rin learns that gods long thought dead are very much alive — and that mastering control over those powers could mean more than just surviving school。

For while the Nikara Empire is at peace, the Federation of Mugen still lurks across a narrow sea。 The militarily advanced Federation occupied Nikan for decades after the First Poppy War, and only barely lost the continent in the Second。 And while most of the people are complacent to go about their lives, a few are aware that a Third Poppy War is just a spark away。

Rin’s shamanic powers may be the only way to save her people。 But as she finds out more about the god that has chosen her, the vengeful Phoenix, she fears that winning the war may cost her humanity 。。。 and that it may already be too late。

5 STARSNothing could have prepared me for this book。 All I know is PAIN。 I am in awe of what I have just read。 Even though I have heard nothing but good things about The Poppy War, I will still nervous that I would be let down by this book。 That was not the case at all。 There is a lot of graphic material in this book that might be sensitive for some readers, so if you feel you would be affected by it, please look up the trigger warnings。“Well, fuck the heavenly order of things。 If getting marrie 5 STARSNothing could have prepared me for this book。 All I know is PAIN。 I am in awe of what I have just read。 Even though I have heard nothing but good things about The Poppy War, I will still nervous that I would be let down by this book。 That was not the case at all。 There is a lot of graphic material in this book that might be sensitive for some readers, so if you feel you would be affected by it, please look up the trigger warnings。“Well, fuck the heavenly order of things。 If getting married to a gross old man was her preordained role on this earth, then Rin was determined to rewrite it。”The Poppy War is an adult fantasy book that is inspired by historical China。 When Fang Runin, who goes by Rin, aces the Keju in order to escape an unwanted marriage and future, she is sent to Sinegard, and elite military academy。 There, she is greeted by taunts, strange teachers, and magical powers that she could have never dreamed of。 While war is looming in Nikan, Rin is faced with decisions that could change her life, and her people's lives。 “War doesn't determine who's right。 War determines who remains。”This is one of the best books I have read in a while。 From the first chapter, I was instantly hooked。 Not only is Rin a compelling protagonist, but the plot moves with precision and grace。 The pacing of The Poppy War is perfect; it is action packed while also providing room for breathers and deeper analysis。 Each character is developed in a way that readers could I either sympathize with them or hate or even both。 Rin, herself, has such an interesting character arc, and I'm looking forward to seeing where the author takes us。 There are many themes of colonialism, war, and inequality dispersed throughout The Poppy War that brings this book into another level。 Whenever I thought that this book was headed in one direction, it completely switched up on me。 I'm very excited (and terrified!) to read The Dragon Republic, but I'm sure that R。F。 Kuang will manage to break me somehow。 。。。more

I'm spechless。。。 totally spechless, what the hell did I read。?? This book has everything, is raw, it show us a reality so cruel and horrible, the reality of war。 It has strong scenes, that make us stop reading, cuz its brutal。。。 so brutal。。。 I love the fact that it show us that there is no right or wrong in war, every decision is hard and contradictory, and sometimes its difficult to choose。 I felt that in Rin。 The complexity of adverse feelings。 I'm amazed and horrified , and I cant wait for th I'm spechless。。。 totally spechless, what the hell did I read。?? This is a difficult book to read。 Strongly recommend looking up the trigger warnings。 Having said that, I “enjoyed” it。 Rin is not your typical heroine, makes questionable choices, and can at sometimes be frustrating。 But the journey that Kuang takes us is extraordinary。 You feel the brutality and despair of war。 It makes no excuses and doesn’t shy away from difficult topics。 Can’t wait to read the next installment。

IF you can handle dark/heavy topics, great fantasy book (from a trilogy) that I would recommend。 The poppy war series doesn't have the word "war" in the title for nothing。 Don't read if you can't handle sometimes detailed description of gruesome murder events or events containing sexual assault。 IF you can handle dark/heavy topics, great fantasy book (from a trilogy) that I would recommend。 The poppy war series doesn't have the word "war" in the title for nothing。 Don't read if you can't handle sometimes detailed description of gruesome murder events or events containing sexual assault。 。。。more

I can see why this book is so successful。The first half is masterfully executed。We get a very well-done introduction into a fantastic alternative world like feudal china。We get to know various interesting characters and accompany the MC on a difficult (metaphorical) journey full of unexpected turns。But shortly beyond the first half, everything falls apart。 Not only get 95% of the cast we got to know so far just discarded but the author starts to constantly contradict her own painstakingly constr I can see why this book is so successful。The first half is masterfully executed。We get a very well-done introduction into a fantastic alternative world like feudal china。We get to know various interesting characters and accompany the MC on a difficult (metaphorical) journey full of unexpected turns。But shortly beyond the first half, everything falls apart。 Not only get 95% of the cast we got to know so far just discarded but the author starts to constantly contradict her own painstakingly constructed worldbuilding every other page。On top of it all, the story mutates into the classic crew of misfit kids with superpowers working as a secret special force。 There might be some interesting conclusion to all this and maybe the tantalizing taste of true moral grey the book teased in the first half but the avalanche of classic and age-old stereotypes that could've been copied out of a Marvel movie including the "witty banter" destroyed my willingness to even try。But, you know, it's new, because it's feudal china。I just don't have the nerve of yet another story of a crew of odd specialists all combining their very special abilities to pull off yet another seemingly impossible heist/mission。 。。。more

High 3 stars for me, the beginning was a slow pace for me but the end was really strong。 My only concern is for the brutal mid part that was affective but I couldn't read it in one sit as plans。 High 3 stars for me, the beginning was a slow pace for me but the end was really strong。 My only concern is for the brutal mid part that was affective but I couldn't read it in one sit as plans。 。。。more

I found this one a little disjointed - the first section is so strongly a YA format (the test, the special school, the mentor, the hidden powers), and then the last section is incredibly violent。 I see what the author is going for, and it's quite striking。 But for myself I usually avoid this degree of violence in fiction。 I found this one a little disjointed - the first section is so strongly a YA format (the test, the special school, the mentor, the hidden powers), and then the last section is incredibly violent。 I see what the author is going for, and it's quite striking。 But for myself I usually avoid this degree of violence in fiction。 。。。more

I have CHILLS。。。 Truthfully, hated this book for the first 200 pages。 I put it down for months and was about to put it on my DNF list。。。I kept going because everyone said it was worth it。And omg was it worth it。What's even more disturbing is that all the atrocities featured are based on real life events, like the Rape of Nanjing, the experiments done on people in WW2, The Opium Wars (possibly) and other horrific events。 Kuang's historical and cultural knowledge made this book so real that it was I have CHILLS。。。 Truthfully, hated this book for the first 200 pages。 I put it down for months and was about to put it on my DNF list。。。I kept going because everyone said it was worth it。And omg was it worth it。What's even more disturbing is that all the atrocities featured are based on real life events, like the Rape of Nanjing, the experiments done on people in WW2, The Opium Wars (possibly) and other horrific events。 Kuang's historical and cultural knowledge made this book so real that it was almost sickening。 Phenomenal read, and it's incredible that this was Kuang's debut novel。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 The writing, the plot, the characters, world-building and the magic systems were flawless。 It shattered me。 I don't know what to say。 War is such a painful thing and I've never realized the full extent of how mankind destroyed each other over history。 We don't read much about the actual deaths in history class。 They talk so much about political agendas and liberation, but never about the genocides and the extent of pain wrought into humanity。 The author does a great job at portraying real events The writing, the plot, the characters, world-building and the magic systems were flawless。 It shattered me。 I don't know what to say。 War is such a painful thing and I've never realized the full extent of how mankind destroyed each other over history。 We don't read much about the actual deaths in history class。 They talk so much about political agendas and liberation, but never about the genocides and the extent of pain wrought into humanity。 The author does a great job at portraying real events in history through fiction while focussing on people, and not their politics。 The characters feel real and alive with minds of their own。 It's a great book。 I'm kinda traumatized。 Now I'd like to curl into a ball and stop talking。 Fair warning to people, don't get attached to the characters。 Don't think things cannot get worse, they will。 It's a downward spiral。 And don't expect to come out of this book with a sense of relief or victory。 I'm too scared to read the second book。 。。。more

I am absolutely in love with this book。 Her writing sucks you into the world and leaves you with all the emotions she’s imposes。 I loved that the plot of the book fragmented and wasn’t a beginning-to-end type of plot。 There was so many different aspects to the book that you experience the growth of the main character Runin with her。 You feel how much she grows as a person and who she becomes in the end。 This book is a must read。 It will make you cry, leave you in shock, all the while excite you I am absolutely in love with this book。 Her writing sucks you into the world and leaves you with all the emotions she’s imposes。 I loved that the plot of the book fragmented and wasn’t a beginning-to-end type of plot。 There was so many different aspects to the book that you experience the growth of the main character Runin with her。 You feel how much she grows as a person and who she becomes in the end。 This book is a must read。 It will make you cry, leave you in shock, all the while excite you to continue。 。。。more

Riveting storyline drawing inspiration from Chinese historical war events such as the Rape of Nanjing and the 2nd Sino-Japanese War。 The descriptions in this book can be so brutal and unforgiving - exactly how war is。 I was a big fan of how the book stayed true to its many Chinese influences, even though it's a fantasy。 Kuang's characters are so likeable and real。 Ready for the sequel。 Riveting storyline drawing inspiration from Chinese historical war events such as the Rape of Nanjing and the 2nd Sino-Japanese War。 The descriptions in this book can be so brutal and unforgiving - exactly how war is。 I was a big fan of how the book stayed true to its many Chinese influences, even though it's a fantasy。 Kuang's characters are so likeable and real。 Ready for the sequel。 。。。more
