Summary

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER - Discover Thrawn's origins within the Chiss Ascendancy in the first book in an epic new Star Wars trilogy from bestselling author Timothy Zahn。

Beyond the edge of the galaxy lies the Unknown Regions: chaotic, uncharted, and near impassable, with hidden secrets and dangers in equal measure。 And nestled within its swirling chaos is the Ascendancy, home to the enigmatic Chiss and the Nine Ruling Families that lead them。

The peace of the Ascendancy, a beacon of calm and stability, is shattered after a daring attack on the Chiss capital that leaves no trace of the enemy。 Baffled, the Ascendancy dispatches one of its brightest young military officers to root out the unseen assailants。 A recruit born of no title, but adopted into the powerful family of the Mitth and given the name Thrawn。

With the might of the Expansionary Fleet at his back, and the aid of his comrade Admiral Ar'alani, answers begin to fall into place。 But as Thrawn's first command probes deeper into the vast stretch of space his people call the Chaos, he realizes that the mission he has been given is not what it seems。

And the threat to the Ascendancy is only just beginning。

I love Timothy Zahn's style, especially when he is writing Thrawn。 These books can be dry and heavy on the military and strategy stuff, but I love it。 This book expands quite a bit on the knowledge of Thrawn's species and homeworld and was a lot of fun to consume。 I love Timothy Zahn's style, especially when he is writing Thrawn。 These books can be dry and heavy on the military and strategy stuff, but I love it。 This book expands quite a bit on the knowledge of Thrawn's species and homeworld and was a lot of fun to consume。 。。。more

Far removed from the Canon, this reminded me more of Star Trek than it did Star Wars。 Art, tactics and deduction are still at play here, but so are the political machinations of the Chiss。 An interesting read overall。

Very fun to read this prequel to the Thrawn series。 An origin story, if you will。 Such an original world。 Great characters。 Complicated political plot。

A great start to the Thrawn prequel trilogy。 While the author's decision to use intermittent flashbacks (like he did in Thrawn: Alliances) is mildly disorienting like it was in Alliances, I thought it was more seamlessly executed this time around and added a layer of valuable insight into Thrawn's backstory。 The exploration of Chiss history, culture, and politics is fascinating, and I'm interested to see if future books in this series explain why the Chiss are so reluctant to engage outsiders。 A great start to the Thrawn prequel trilogy。 While the author's decision to use intermittent flashbacks (like he did in Thrawn: Alliances) is mildly disorienting like it was in Alliances, I thought it was more seamlessly executed this time around and added a layer of valuable insight into Thrawn's backstory。 The exploration of Chiss history, culture, and politics is fascinating, and I'm interested to see if future books in this series explain why the Chiss are so reluctant to engage outsiders。 。。。more

Now this is the Thrawn prequel we've all been waiting for。 Despite generally enjoying Zahn's Thrawn-centric works over the past years (particular shout-out to Treason), I've always felt they suffered from being more or less trapped by the continuity of the Stars Wars universe。 Imperial!Thrawn is a Thrawn bound by a nearly infinite number of overlapping storylines from a much-discussed corner of a galaxy far-far away, none of which he's allowed to do more than tug at gently。 But what if we take T Now this is the Thrawn prequel we've all been waiting for。 Despite generally enjoying Zahn's Thrawn-centric works over the past years (particular shout-out to Treason), I've always felt they suffered from being more or less trapped by the continuity of the Stars Wars universe。 Imperial!Thrawn is a Thrawn bound by a nearly infinite number of overlapping storylines from a much-discussed corner of a galaxy far-far away, none of which he's allowed to do more than tug at gently。 But what if we take Thrawn out of the Empire - say, all the way back to his origins in the Chiss Ascendancy? Well, that's game on, my friends。When three warships drop out of hyperspace to attack the Chiss homeworld, the Ascendancy does what it does to any threat: it annihilates them。 During the self-congratulations that follow, only Supreme General Ba'kif pauses to wonder if the obviously-doomed-to-fail attack might have been intended as misdirection。 On a hunch, he decides to assign an up and coming warrior to investigate the seemingly-unrelated destruction of a refugee ship at the edge of the Chiss domain。 As respected as he is disliked, Senior Captain Thrawn will need all the help he can get unpicking the mystery, particularly from a trio of women: Ar'alani, an old school friend advanced to the Admiralty; Che'ri, a young Chiss Skywalker; and Thalias, a former Skywalker whose path crossed Thrawn's briefly many years ago。In Chaos Rising Zahn removes everyone's favorite Grand Admiral from the crowded Imperial checkerboard and plops him back on his home turf where he has plenty of room to play three-dimensional chess。 This is a younger, less-certain Thrawn, one still learning how to read people rather than just tactics and reeling from one terrible mistake made when he failed to differentiate between the two。 Zahn neatly intercuts between Present!Thrawn investigating an intergalactic threat to the Chiss and Past!Thrawn learning the lessons that will someday allow him to give a fragile New Republic nightmares。 Where some previous Thrawn novels have buckled under the weight of a single narrator - who has to be close enough to tell the story but never close enough to see behind the curtain, which can make either them look dumb or as if Thrawn is deliberately withholding - Zahn here uses a veritable stable of secondaries to give different perspectives, which allows him to reveal and conceal at will。 Also have I mentioned that this is basically Thrawn: Ladies Night? Because it is, and I'm 100% here for it。If it sounds like I'm fan-girl squealing, that's because I absolutely bloody am。 Twisty, suspenseful, and full of character insights, Chaos Rising is the Thrawn prequel I've wanted ever since a certain Noghri blade found its mark back in 1993。 While I'm fairly certain this trilogy can only end in whatever events precipitated Thrawn's decision to leave the Ascendancy for the Empite, I intend to enjoy NoStringsonMe!Thrawn for as long as Zahn allows。 (And then probably longer in fanfic。) 。。。more

Wow。 I love Timothy Zahn's writing, of course。 The way he spins a tale is engaging to both the mind and the soul。This book about Thrawn did not disappoint。 It shows Thrawn do what Thrawn does。 He is a calculating masterful tactician will a flawed political understanding 。。。 if not blind side。 An excellent read for any Star Wars fan。 A must read for a Thrawn fan。 Wow。 I love Timothy Zahn's writing, of course。 The way he spins a tale is engaging to both the mind and the soul。This book about Thrawn did not disappoint。 It shows Thrawn do what Thrawn does。 He is a calculating masterful tactician will a flawed political understanding 。。。 if not blind side。 An excellent read for any Star Wars fan。 A must read for a Thrawn fan。 。。。more

Honestly I got around 100 pages in and had to ask myself "is this actually a star wars novel?" Because it could just as easily have been set in any Sci fi universe。 100 pages in and can I tell you what the plot was? No。 Could I tell anything about the titular character Thrawn? No。Do I even recommend it? No。 Honestly I got around 100 pages in and had to ask myself "is this actually a star wars novel?" 4。5 StarsIt wasn't till the middle of the book。。。that I realized that this was a prequel to his previous Disney Canon Thrawn Trilogy。 That being known, we get a origin story that sets up his genius。 Of course, within that previous trilogy。。。we learn things about him, but this allows it to play out within the Ascendancy。I love the alternate use of the word, Skywalker。。。to denote a young girl that knows how to navigate ships within the Chaos。When Thrawn first is introduced to Anikan Skywalker。。。we 4。5 StarsIt wasn't till the middle of the book。。。that I realized that this was a prequel to his previous Disney Canon Thrawn Trilogy。 That being known, we get a origin story that sets up his genius。 Of course, within that previous trilogy。。。we learn things about him, but this allows it to play out within the Ascendancy。I love the alternate use of the word, Skywalker。。。to denote a young girl that knows how to navigate ships within the Chaos。When Thrawn first is introduced to Anikan Skywalker。。。we already have been sensitized to the use of the Sky Walkers and how they are used within the Ascendancy。Also, the inner workings of the Ascendancy is very interesting and very different than what he will later have to navigate through the Empire。I also enjoyed the overall story (first third of a trilogy) about how Thrawn rises and falls within his home world empire。 It was also interesting to see how he is building confidants within his peers, that will back him up and support him。。。when they really do not understand his mindset or what he is actually doing。 They TRUST him, and follow him。He also has gained powerfull allies (higher ups) that can help him get out of tricky situations that others place him in OR he himself finds himself in because of his lack of understanding when it comes to politics。 Politics and warfare are quite different, though from our outside looking in understanding, you have to feel that he would do a LITTLE better in the political realm, but that doesn't seem to be the case。I'm really glad that Timothy Zahn has continued with this beloved character。 I look forward to seeing him, soon, within a Disney+ TV show or movie sometime in the near future。 It just seems appropriate。Really loved this book。 All the feels。 。。。more

Interesting。。。I knew it would be different。 Thrawn is still the same, but the players around him are different。 The political intrigue and maneuvering around him is much different than in the Empire。 What stuck me out is something said near the end that parallels his dealings in the Empire。 "Those in his command follow because they are good soldiers。" Whereas on the Chimera, they follow him because he has shown excellence and they trust him with their lives。 He is not valued equally in either ci Interesting。。。I knew it would be different。 Thrawn is still the same, but the players around him are different。 The political intrigue and maneuvering around him is much different than in the Empire。 What stuck me out is something said near the end that parallels his dealings in the Empire。 "Those in his command follow because they are good soldiers。" Whereas on the Chimera, they follow him because he has shown excellence and they trust him with their lives。 He is not valued equally in either circumstance。 I like this subtle comparison, where is not home per se in either navy。I do often forget his genius。 Every plan he creates is layered and well thought out from the beginning。 It was a nice comparison to see his military support in the Chiss fleet。 Poor guy will never understand why politicians hate him though。It as nice to see the timeline overlap with Thrawn: Alliance, placing the story alongside the Clone Wars。 I do hope the trilogy take us to the Aristocra's decision to send him to the Empire。 That would be nice to finally have that reveal。 。。。more

I don’t normally like “villains” as Thrawn is in Star Wars “Rebels” but his character and military tactics are so interesting that I wanted to know more。 This book was very heavy on Chiss politics which caused me to reread pages over and over to make sure I was catching on but I liked the insight into Thrawn’s origin story!

”art mirrors the soul from which tactic arises“such a good book, loved the characters。 the setting。 how it switched between memories and the present。 that this was abt thrawn and he was so well characterised without even a single scene being written from his perspective。probably the best book i‘ve read this year。also love how the chiss names are made up。

Found this book to be pretty boring overall。 Took awhile for it to build up to finale and something interesting。 Had very little to do with ‘Star Wars’。 Overall, boring small squabble that didn’t tie into anything Star Wars related to make it of interest or tie into the bigger picture。 I tried to get back into Star Wars books after a long time away but this didn’t do it for me whatsoever。
