Summary

I skimmed this, good information and reminders to take care of yourself and the benefits of not over-committing to too many things, but I agree it could have been much shorter。

Some great ideas, but presented as if by a traveling salesman hawking miracle cures。 The ironic thing is that he could have slimmed so much fluff from this and really hammered the system home。

As an individual currently experiencing the slog that is your mid-twenties, this book has really helped me begin to understand and differentiate between what is important and what isn't important--or in other words, it's helped me identify what is essential, in my work, my relationships, my personal projects, my possessions。。。everything。 Greg does an excellent job of providing practical ways to implement the concept of less, but better, while also providing numerous examples。 Amazing read that h As an individual currently experiencing the slog that is your mid-twenties, this book has really helped me begin to understand and differentiate between what is important and what isn't important--or in other words, it's helped me identify what is essential, in my work, my relationships, my personal projects, my possessions。。。everything。 Greg does an excellent job of providing practical ways to implement the concept of less, but better, while also providing numerous examples。 Amazing read that has left me really inspired。 。。。more

I just had to laugh by the end of the book。 If this book had been written by an essentialist for essentialists it would have been no more than 20 pages long。 I guess that would not have sold though。 I remember reading an analysis of Good to Great while in grad school。 In essence, anyone can pick a bunch of successful companies or people and find something common among them。 The reason so many books like Good to Great and Essentialism are written year after year and do not prove to create what th I just had to laugh by the end of the book。 If this book had been written by an essentialist for essentialists it would have been no more than 20 pages long。 I guess that would not have sold though。 I remember reading an analysis of Good to Great while in grad school。 In essence, anyone can pick a bunch of successful companies or people and find something common among them。 The reason so many books like Good to Great and Essentialism are written year after year and do not prove to create what they appear to claim they can create is they find commonalities that are not causalities。 Some of the stories told were almost insulting in their simplification to fit what the author self admittedly is selling。 Most of the book seemed like common sense but like the saying goes, common sense is not that common。 Applies to me as well so there were some good tidbits I took with me。 。。。more

Very good work/life book about priorities。 Less is more, saying no is good。 Focus on what's important。 Only have 1 top priority。 Very good work/life book about priorities。 Less is more, saying no is good。 Focus on what's important。 Only have 1 top priority。 。。。more

This was our book club book or I probably wouldn't have picked it up otherwise。 But it had some important lessons in it that I hope to learn。 I wouldn't call myself an essentialist yet- I am definitely a pleaser and need to learn to say no more and do the things that are truly essential and not stress myself out with wasteful unessentials。 This was our book club book or I probably wouldn't have picked it up otherwise。 But it had some important lessons in it that I hope to learn。 I wouldn't call myself an essentialist yet- I am definitely a pleaser and need to learn to say no more and do the things that are truly essential and not stress myself out with wasteful unessentials。 。。。more

Great read for those looking to simplify their lives and focus on the important things。 I see many reviews that this book should be shorter, however I felt it was an easy read and the information was all crucial for correct application of its principles。 Ultimately, the success from this book boils down to the actions it inspires。 If put into action, the principles will change lives for the better。

The first 2-3 chapters were really helpful (if you can read past the humanistic perspective)。 The rest was so-so summary of concepts from other books。

Take home: say no to things。

Atieh Mokhtary

We have good reasons to fear saying no。 We worry we’ll miss out on a great opportunity。 We’re scared of rocking the boat, stirring things up, burning bridges。 We can’t bear the thought of disappointing someone we respect and like。 None of this makes us a bad person。 It’s a natural part of being human。 Yet as hard as it can be to say no to someone, failing to do so can cause us to miss out on something far more important。

This is always recommended as a classic book for entrepreneurs, and I now know why。 It helps you keep your focus narrow, and really learn to strip out unimportant things in our lives。 Even if you aren't an entrepreneur, learning how to say know and understand what you actually want to do with your time is so key to a happy life。 This is always recommended as a classic book for entrepreneurs, and I now know why。 It helps you keep your focus narrow, and really learn to strip out unimportant things in our lives。 Even if you aren't an entrepreneur, learning how to say know and understand what you actually want to do with your time is so key to a happy life。 。。。more

。。。more

Greg McKeown has done a fabulous job pointing our how we can become more effective by choosing the most essential thing。。。。 How do our choices and decisions align with what we need to accomplish and how many times do we allow less important tasks, projects and interruptions disrupt our flow and effectiveness。 As a two on the Enneagram scale, helping others and serving is natural and personally rewarding however, it can also lead to not taking care of myself which makes me less effective。 Lot's t Greg McKeown has done a fabulous job pointing our how we can become more effective by choosing the most essential thing。。。。 How do our choices and decisions align with what we need to accomplish and how many times do we allow less important tasks, projects and interruptions disrupt our flow and effectiveness。 As a two on the Enneagram scale, helping others and serving is natural and personally rewarding however, it can also lead to not taking care of myself which makes me less effective。 Lot's to work on!Kelly 。。。more

I wanted to read this one as a personal guide, I felt of spoke much more to work。 In terms of work, I think it was excellent。 Lots of ideas about how doing less can inspire you do work to a higher level。 A fav concept was that you can multi-task, but not multi-focus。

This book was a giant call-out to me as someone who says “yes” to almost every request or opportunity。 The message in this book just came at the right time。Can be quite repetitive and some examples did not sit well with me。 This book will not appeal to everyone, but can really help those who have unhealthy relationships with work。 I really liked it because it helped me recalibrate and redesign my life。
