Summary

As a young man, Ed Catmull had a dream: to make the world’s first computer-animated movie。 He nurtured that dream first as a Ph。D。 student at the University of Utah, where many computer science pioneers got their start, and then forged an early partnership with George Lucas that led, indirectly, to his founding Pixar with Steve Jobs and John Lasseter in 1986。 Nine years later and against all odds, Toy Story was released, changing animation forever。

Since then, Pixar has dominated the world of animation, producing such beloved films as Monsters, Inc。, Finding Nemo, The Incredibles, Up, and WALL-E, which have gone on to set box-office records and garner twenty-seven Academy Awards。 The joyousness of the storytelling, the inventive plots, the emotional authenticity: In some ways, Pixar movies are an object lesson in what creativity really is。 Now, in this book, Catmull reveals the ideals and techniques, honed over years, that have made Pixar so widely admired—and so profitable。

Creativity, Inc。 is a book for managers who want to lead their employees to new heights, a manual for anyone who strives for originality, and the first-ever, all-access trip into the nerve center of Pixar Animation Studios—into the story meetings, the postmortems, and the ‘Braintrust’ sessions where art is born。 It is, at heart, a book about how to build and sustain a creative culture—but it is also, as Pixar co-founder and president Ed Catmull writes, ‘an expression of the ideas that I believe make the best in us possible。’

This is just a bit too slow-burning and ponderous for my tastes, but I did enjoy certain parts immensely。 The anecdotes from working on some of Pixar's finest creations are fascinating - who knew how close Toy Story 2 came from accidental deletion? And the strange drawing-board storyline of Up? Some of the developmental processes like the Braintrust meetings were really insightful too。 There is a lot to be learned from the author here。But when the book delves into psychoanalytic business theory This is just a bit too slow-burning and ponderous for my tastes, but I did enjoy certain parts immensely。 The anecdotes from working on some of Pixar's finest creations are fascinating - who knew how close Toy Story 2 came from accidental deletion? Well written and entertaining, the book describes how Pixar works with ideas applicable to businesses anywhere。

This was such a good listen。 Important themes in life explained so well and great stories to go along with it。 Interesting to see life from an animators perspective and some of the background stories of Pixar and Disney, and great leadership principles discussed as well。 Really enjoyed it

I don't think I ever highlighted so many passages in a book before in my life。 It's very long, but so much worth it!For such a popular book, which is also not that new, I was impressed how many ideas were still fresh and original。The title is a little misleading though, since it's not so focused on creativity per se, but mostly on leadership, corporate culture and business。Ed's writing style is a joy to read, embodying what Pixar is best known for: storytelling。 I don't think I ever highlighted so many passages in a book before in my life。 It's very long, but so much worth it!For such a popular book, which is also not that new, I was impressed how many ideas were still fresh and original。The title is a little misleading though, since it's not so focused on creativity per se, but mostly on leadership, corporate culture and business。Ed's writing style is a joy to read, embodying what Pixar is best known for: storytelling。 。。。more

It is probably the best business book I have ever read。 I cherish the book as it is not written by a consultant or a management guru but a real leader。 The breadth of issues noted increasingly paints a rich story。 The rich and diverse aspects ring very true and in my experience, noteworthy。I do know that one aspect of events was more adverse to many employees - the author highlights how Steve Jobs interacted with employees and it was often not appreciated。 Ed's views are understandable though - It is probably the best business book I have ever read。 I cherish the book as it is not written by a consultant or a management guru but a real leader。 The breadth of issues noted increasingly paints a rich story。 The rich and diverse aspects ring very true and in my experience, noteworthy。I do know that one aspect of events was more adverse to many employees - the author highlights how Steve Jobs interacted with employees and it was often not appreciated。 Ed's views are understandable though - the impact to Pixar was a deeper cut though。 。。。more

A mix of Ed Catmull's history, the history of Pixar, and a collection of his personal philosophies, this book was amazing to read。 Having read the behemoth DisneyWar, I was expecting something more cynical and business oriented, but no, Pixar's leaders value story and personal creativity and work as hard as they can to include every single person on the team。 The love that goes into each film they make astounded me。 The deep differences between Pixar and Disney were so interesting to see。 This i A mix of Ed Catmull's history, the history of Pixar, and a collection of his personal philosophies, this book was amazing to read。 Having read the behemoth DisneyWar, I was expecting something more cynical and business oriented, but no, Pixar's leaders value story and personal creativity and work as hard as they can to include every single person on the team。 The love that goes into each film they make astounded me。 The deep differences between Pixar and Disney were so interesting to see。 This is one of those books that made me want to create and find an environment like this one。 。。。more

An incredible book through and through。 Ed Catmull’s emphasis on people and fostering an amazing community of people resonates really well with me。 All the talk of a culture with accountability, creativity, honesty, authenticity, risk taking etc。 Pixar has done some incredibly things and while I always admired their culture, I have a deeper appreciation for it seeing just how it was made, implemented and shaped over the years。

This is among the best books I have read in the past several years。 Far exceeded my exceptions!

I thought this would be a novel describing the creative process of Pixar movies。 Instead it was the origin story of Pixar the company starting with George Lucas and ending with Steve Jobs。My biggest takeaway is how much time they allowed their employees to take to develop the story。 Years! And I compared that to the self-imposed deadlines of authors trying to crank out many stories a year。

Catmull’s writing and stories are insightful and interesting regardless of the industry you work on。 It proves to be an inspirational guide of how to create a work culture that connect and enables each individual to bring out the best in them and in turn the company。 It showcases the power of collaboration, communication and confidence in the workplace and how that creates unmatchable results for both the ending product and the people involved。 It is an inspirational read that demonstrates the p Catmull’s writing and stories are insightful and interesting regardless of the industry you work on。 It proves to be an inspirational guide of how to create a work culture that connect and enables each individual to bring out the best in them and in turn the company。 It showcases the power of collaboration, communication and confidence in the workplace and how that creates unmatchable results for both the ending product and the people involved。 It is an inspirational read that demonstrates the power of proper management and how it can affect and impact every detail in an organization by putting people first and above all。 The book is a quick read with a pragmatic and introspective approach that will impact all who read it。 。。。more

Reading this book makes you feel as if you are a part of Pixar’s journey, from inception to its glorious current state and beyond。 It covers a plethora of topics like managing high performers, healthy company culture, fostering creativity and navigating uncertainty。 But the thing that sets this book’s narrative apart is the admission of fallibility。 There is absolutely nowhere in the book that the writer assumes to be a know-it-all, which is rare in the category of management and strategy books。 Reading this book makes you feel as if you are a part of Pixar’s journey, from inception to its glorious current state and beyond。 It covers a plethora of topics like managing high performers, healthy company culture, fostering creativity and navigating uncertainty。 But the thing that sets this book’s narrative apart is the admission of fallibility。 There is absolutely nowhere in the book that the writer assumes to be a know-it-all, which is rare in the category of management and strategy books。 The section dedicated to Steve Jobs at the end is another icing on the cake。 All in all, a must read! 。。。more

I think this is a very important book and one of the few books which should be made mandatory, especially for management students。 I loved how Ed explained the tiniest details of the workings of the great PIXAR。 But while he was doing this, he also exposed his weak points, which made me feel he was as human as I am and so I could really connect to him instead of keeping him on a pedestal。

Closing this one with tons of respect。 The way Ed thinks about creating organizations is as impactful and thoughtful as the way he thinks about creating films。 It’s not that he is without conviction, but the un-pin-down-able-ness of his methods prove his point that excellence (specifically in terms of creative work & culture) requires everything formulas diminish。
