Summary

Better to die sharp in war than rust through a time of peace。

A mother struggling to repress her violent past,
A son struggling to grasp his violent future,
A father blind to the danger that threatens them all。

When the winds of war reach their peninsula, will the Matsuda family have the strength to defend their empire? Or will they tear each other apart before the true enemies even reach their shores?

High on a mountainside at the edge of the Kaigenese Empire live the most powerful warriors in the world, superhumans capable of raising the sea and wielding blades of ice。 For hundreds of years, the fighters of the Kusanagi Peninsula have held the Empire’s enemies at bay, earning their frozen spit of land the name ‘The Sword of Kaigen。’

Born into Kusanagi’s legendary Matsuda family, fourteen-year-old Mamoru has always known his purpose: to master his family’s fighting techniques and defend his homeland。 But when an outsider arrives and pulls back the curtain on Kaigen’s alleged age of peace, Mamoru realizes that he might not have much time to become the fighter he was bred to be。 Worse, the empire he was bred to defend may stand on a foundation of lies。

Misaki told herself that she left the passions of her youth behind when she married into the Matsuda house。 Determined to be a good housewife and mother, she hid away her sword, along with everything from her days as a fighter in a faraway country。 But with her growing son asking questions about the outside world, the threat of an impending invasion looming across the sea, and her frigid husband grating on her nerves, Misaki finds the fighter in her clawing its way back to the surface。

The Sword of Kaigen is powerful, emotional, tragic, yet beautiful。 This is a truly unique fantasy, infused with Japanese culture, themes, and tone。 It was mainly centered around a family- the powerful Matsuda's。 This family was from a very traditional mountain village in the Kusanagi Peninsula in the Kaiganese empire。 The Kusanagi Peninsula is traditionally known to have powerful and strong bloodlines, who produce the best swordsmen alive with superhuman abilities。 However, Kusanagi hasn't kept The Sword of Kaigen is powerful, emotional, tragic, yet beautiful。 This is a truly unique fantasy, infused with Japanese culture, themes, and tone。 It was mainly centered around a family- the powerful Matsuda's。 This family was from a very traditional mountain village in the Kusanagi Peninsula in the Kaiganese empire。 The Kusanagi Peninsula is traditionally known to have powerful and strong bloodlines, who produce the best swordsmen alive with superhuman abilities。 However, Kusanagi hasn't kept up with the rest of the world。 The government has been manipulating the village with propaganda and wants them to remain loyal despite using their powerful swordsmen as pawns in war。 This village has its world turned upside down when a new family moves in from the Northern and more modern part of the empire。 Kwang, a young boy of this new family starts school and meets a young swordsman, of the powerful Matsuda family, named Mamoru。 Kwang challenges Mamoru on his beliefs, traditions, prejudices, patriotism, religion。 Mamoru is now forced to confront his own place in the world despite being resistant。 His mother Misaki notices the conflict within Mamoru and eventually finds out。 Misaki, initially an outsider who was forced into an arranged marriage into the Matsuda family has a secret past。 Conflict and pain from years of an unhappy marriage and being a subservient wife have swelled up to the surface。 The father Takeru is blind to it all。 Tragedy ensues。 Hope is at the end of the tunnel and Misaki is at the heart of it。 This is one of the best books I have read this year。 I was blown away and surprised。 There have been many rave reviews, but I wasn't sure what to expect。 I appreciate work from an Indie author。 It's important to support these people, especially If they are very talented。 M。L Wang is very talented。 I read this book free on my Kindle account。 But I have decided to purchase a physical copy of the book to show my support。5 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 。。。more

4。5 stars。 This book was beautiful。 The elemental magic system was fantastic。 The military strategy aspect was very cool。 The supremely patriarchal cultural influence from traditional Japanese warriors was interesting and added an aspect to the story I don’t read about often, expected obedience and subservience。 But mostly this was about characters。 The growth, inner strength, grief, and resilience of a woman who is forced to leash herself to fit into what her family and society expect from her。

I almost gave this one 4 stars。 It was very slow。 On one battle and a lot of sadness。

It's an amazing and moving story。 While the cultures are clearly inspired by certain historical events, Wang has built her own rich world with them and has brought these wonderfully detailed characters to life within it。 If you like oriental themed fantasy, with a heavy splash of elemental magic, you have to check this out。 It's an amazing and moving story。 While the cultures are clearly inspired by certain historical events, Wang has built her own rich world with them and has brought these wonderfully detailed characters to life within it。 If you like oriental themed fantasy, with a heavy splash of elemental magic, you have to check this out。 。。。more

I loved it! The geography was super cool。 The world building was fantastic! I had so so so much fun reading this book I couldnt put it down。 I stayed up until 3 am reading this story! Absolutely enthralling! Why I docked one star: At this point I was curious to see where the story would go。 2/3 of the book was absolutely epic。 I was patient with the author to unravel the ending。 I was unfortunently very underwhelmed。 All of a sudden Takeru has a personality change and becomes a different person entirely。 Misaki forgives 15 years of being degraded。 The assassination attempt doesnt get wrapped up and is left open ended and the war with the fonyaka doesnt get wrapped up。 Just left open ended。 I needed a stronger ending and the last third of the book completely shifted in tone。 Now if there was a follow on book I would think differently knowing that these things would be addresses in another installment however this is a standalone。 So I expected more than what I received。 At no point would I say that this was a bad book。 It was fantastic and a 5 star read for 2/3 of the book。 The choice of ending didnt particularly work for me but that doesnt take away from the epic work throughout the rest of the book。 For a while this was going to be my all time favorite book。 Unfortunately it didnt follow through。I absolutely recommend everyone to read this book。 It's fantastic! 。。。more

She values her family and friendships over all else, and when war comes at their doorstep she doesn't falter。 Through hardships, she remains ever strong。 I just love her so much。 The development of Mamrou’s character was so gradual and satisfying。 He is determined to live up to the past warriors in the Matsuda family and does his best。 A sweet, summer boy。 His fight scenes were immaculate, can’t say enough about it。Okay, so bad things happen to people in this book and it’s brutal。 We go through a war in the book and I was on the edge of my seat, flipping pages as I soaked in the wonderful world M。L。 Wang created。 There are also amazing large-scale battle scenes, with lots of elemental powers such as water, fire, earth, light manipulation, and even blood manipulation。 M。L。 Wang packs a punch and a great deal of intricate worldbuilding, elemental magic, and complex characters that I wished it continued and had a second book。 However, if you’re looking for a standalone fantasy novel, please check this out! You won’t regret it! :) 。。。more

Oh man, what a book。 Cognitive dissonance is strong with this one。 I loved it, but I also kinda hated it。 I have never felt this level of confusion and discomfort with a story。 I have finished it a while ago, but I couldn’t bring myself to rate and review it right away。 I knew I had to sit with it for a while。 There is just too much to unpack here。 If I went my usual ‘Aries’ way about it, no thought - just pure feeling, I would have given it 5 stars and proclaimed a new fave from the rooftops。 B Oh man, what a book。 Cognitive dissonance is strong with this one。 I loved it, but I also kinda hated it。 I have never felt this level of confusion and discomfort with a story。 I have finished it a while ago, but I couldn’t bring myself to rate and review it right away。 I knew I had to sit with it for a while。 There is just too much to unpack here。 If I went my usual ‘Aries’ way about it, no thought - just pure feeling, I would have given it 5 stars and proclaimed a new fave from the rooftops。 But I knew, somewhere at the back of my mind, that I had major issues with some aspects of it。 So I slept on it, thought about it all day and this is my effort at unpacking some of it。 I have always said, if a book makes me invested in the characters and makes me feel/stir powerful emotions, it’s a five star book and a favourite。 This book did that。 Fuck, it did it way more than any other book I have ever read。 Misaki’s character study alone is 11/10 for me。 I haven’t even finished chapter one before she grabbed me by the throat and did not let go。 This character is truly something special, one that I think will stay with me forever。 So, the first two-thirds of the book had me。 I was in it, I went through every single range of human emotion possible。 I didn’t care about the clunky pacing, I didn’t care about awkward info dumps, I didn’t care about the weird, not precisely defined worldbuilding。 I just cared about this woman and her son。 The emotions and investment they have triggered in me cannot be put into words。However, my issues and problems that cannot be masked by the awe-inspiring character work come in the last third of the book。 Again, has nothing to do with technical issues I mentioned – the pace, the writing, the whatever。 It has to do with messaging, and some of the tropes used, that I simply cannot get on board with。 I can't go further into it without spoilers, so for those who have read it and want to know why I can’t give this book five stars, here it is: (view spoiler)[1。 Misaki and Takeru。 Chapter 27, the duel, left me shook。 Like I imagine shook most people。 But, while I was glad to get an explanation of Takeru, I was dreading the direction it has set up for the story。 I did not pick up the book a whole day after finishing that chapter because I KNEW where it would go, and that I would absolutely hate it。 And I was right in my fear。 It went and did the ‘victim falls in love with her abuser’ trope。 I’m sorry, but no。 Fuck that。 The immediate shift in Takeru’s behavior was painfully unrealistic。 The notion that Misaki is half to blame for this debacle of a marriage is INSULTING。 The showing of Takeru seeing his wife as a human being for the first time after she showcases her worth through a skill he respects? Get。Fucked。 I mean, the messaging here… what the actual fuck?!? It’s okay that he hurt her because he was hurting too? She was supposed to try harder and heal him?? This whole relationship is fucking horrendous and the fact that the author tried to justify it at the end makes me sick。 Misaki loves him now? 15 years of emotional, verbal, physical and sexual abuse, is done and dealt with now that we know the ‘why’ of it? It was all worth it at the end? No。 Hell fucking no。 This whole book went for the realistic, the raw and the tragic。 Instead of sticking with it, it romanticized and justified domestic abuse instead of going for the nuance。 Misaki hated her husband。 She hated him for 15 years, and rightly so。 I would have been okay with them coming to an understanding, learning to function somehow, but love? Miss me with that shit。 If any other book pulled this crap, it would be lucky to get two stars out of me。 I absolutely hated this aspect of the story。 Anyone is welcome to disagree with me, but I doubt my mind can be changed on this particular topic。 2。 Hyori subplot。 I get it, it’s a war story。 Awful shit happens, people die and people are hurt。 But for some reason, this really bothered me。 The ‘rape victim kills herself’ trope。 All other upsetting shit makes some sort of twisted sense to me, yet this one doesn’t。 I don’t think it needed to be done, or at least, not in this way。 I found it to be more of an emotional manipulation than having an actual point。 3。 Both of those two issues tie in and come down to this third one, I guess。 I hated the suffocating patriarchy this world had。 I know it is inspired by the real word, by feudal Japan, I know shit like this happened and is still happening in the world。 Doesn’t mean I have to like and accept it in fantasy books。 I am beyond over it。 Just my opinion, the only one I can have given my upbringing, my experiences and my values。 4。 Another thing that I was reminded of while chatting with others about this book – the blood supremacy aspect。 It was never challenged。 It presented the blood purity importance (so, basically inbreeding) and how some bloodlines are more powerful, skilled and worthy than others。 And just left it at that。 Yeah, it’s a magic system, but it still sent a disturbing message and rubbed me the wrong way。 (hide spoiler)]So, this fucking book。 It ruined me。 In good ways and in bad ways。 It elicited some of the strongest emotions I’ve ever experienced reading a book。 While I cannot give it the highest rating and a spot in my favourites, this book will stay with me。 As even with all its faults, it is truly something special。 。。。more

Interesting setting and magic system, but the actual story didn't grab me。 I'm not a big fan of stories featuring suppressed women even if pseudo historic in this case which might have affected the rating。 The fact that the book doesn't really end either is a bit disappointing too as it marketed as a stand-alone book。 Interesting setting and magic system, but the actual story didn't grab me。 I'm not a big fan of stories featuring suppressed women even if pseudo historic in this case which might have affected the rating。 The fact that the book doesn't really end either is a bit disappointing too as it marketed as a stand-alone book。 。。。more

Wang's characters, dialogue, and technical craft are all high quality。 Based on that alone, I would have given this book five stars。 However, the plot is simply not as tight as I personally would have liked。 Halfway through the novel, the primary point of view shifts, and what had seemed to be the original plot and character arc appears to have been abandoned for a different one。 However, this feels highly intentional, and I do not fault Wang for writing her story this way, it simply did not wor Wang's characters, dialogue, and technical craft are all high quality。 Based on that alone, I would have given this book five stars。 However, the plot is simply not as tight as I personally would have liked。 Halfway through the novel, the primary point of view shifts, and what had seemed to be the original plot and character arc appears to have been abandoned for a different one。 However, this feels highly intentional, and I do not fault Wang for writing her story this way, it simply did not work for me, and I became frustrated with what I see as an incomplete story arc for the main character in the first half。 Still, however jarring the shift is, both halves are well-executed, and the plot threads are tied neatly together, with a few left dangling for the books this novel was written as a prequel for (however that series has been put on hold for now, so this book should be treated as a standalone)。 The worldbuilding is interesting。 The main setting is heavily inspired by rural feudal Japan, though there is also plenty of originality。 I would consider the magic system to be somewhat similar to Airbender, given the focus on elemental magic, and Naruto's "bloodline techniques," though there is much thought outside of those ideas。 Overall, I would recommend the book。 However, the plot shift halfway through may throw many readers off。 。。。more

Because the author does all these things in the BEST way possible。 She set her heart on themes, and poured every bit of herself into them。 Nothing felt like it was half-assed。 Mamorou, being the typial hero that is pure and good。 One that in other books, would survive and be the pillar of hope。 His character barely had any flaws because he was quite literally the embodinement of hope。 But in this story, he dies。 In this story, his struggles have ended his life。 But when he died, hope persisted。 Because hope is something that sincerely goes on despite all the crazyiness happening around。 Misaki, an unlikely protagonist was someone I attached with immediately。 I found some of her characteristcs reflect some of my own, but by halfway through the book I was frustrated with her。 I wanted to love every part of her, but Misaki was so irrefutably human。 Her desires, her thoughts, her regrets, her anger, her love - were all things I could imagine an actual mother, an actual woman to feel in thag situation。 Overall, this book brought be to tears。 This book had quite literally touched my heart。 My first 5 star read kf the year。 I loved it。 I loved it。 I loved it。 The side characters were all so lovable。 The tight knitt community was very heart wearming。 And all the tragedies experienced felt like a sword to my gut。 I felt so many emotions reading this, all wonderful colorful emotions。 I would definitely reread this again。 。。。more

I wish more fantasy was like this book… strong worldbuilding, interesting characters, and a very moving plot。 There was a very unexpected turn which broke my heart and I just couldn’t believe that happened so I kept denying it。 I especially loved how ML Wang showed that feminism doesn’t mean empowered, how you can choose a small life, I think this is very important to recognise and can feel strange to readers who grew up with western ideals, but it really resonated with me。 The only reason this I wish more fantasy was like this book… strong worldbuilding, interesting characters, and a very moving plot。 There was a very unexpected turn which broke my heart and I just couldn’t believe that happened so I kept denying it。 I especially loved how ML Wang showed that feminism doesn’t mean empowered, how you can choose a small life, I think this is very important to recognise and can feel strange to readers who grew up with western ideals, but it really resonated with me。 The only reason this hasn’t got 5 stars is because I thought the end was a bit anticlimatic and weird (like the setup to a next series was added last minute, it didn’t feel natural and I thought that maybe in the last ten pages we’d have some resolve but it wasn’t there)。 But all in all, a very good book with many insights and amazing action scenes。 。。。more
