Dan Erlewine is an expert craftsman and quite a good storyteller too。 This book gives you his knowledge about how to setup and fix your guitar properly。 Many luthiers on my country didn't care that kind of details for guitar setup! Book mostly concantrate on Stratocaster and Les Paul style guitars though。 Also it contains important informations for novice luthiers。 It's not deep as i thought but fairly enough。 Highly recommended。 Dan Erlewine is an expert craftsman and quite a good storyteller too。 This book gives you his knowledge about how to setup and fix your guitar properly。 Many luthiers on my country didn't care that kind of details for guitar setup! Very clear, readable and easy to understand。 I've watched some of his videos, and I hear his voice when I'm reading the book。 I like his emphasis on using standard or non-traditional tools, as opposed to custom guitar-only stuff。 It's definitely one expert's approach and preferences, so cross checking with other books or online advice is still useful。 There's more than one way to do a lot of these things。 Even if I choose a different approach, it's always good to know what Dan Erlewine might do Very clear, readable and easy to understand。 I've watched some of his videos, and I hear his voice when I'm reading the book。 I like his emphasis on using standard or non-traditional tools, as opposed to custom guitar-only stuff。 It's definitely one expert's approach and preferences, so cross checking with other books or online advice is still useful。 There's more than one way to do a lot of these things。 Even if I choose a different approach, it's always good to know what Dan Erlewine might do instead。 A nice book, but not balanced quite right。 Not sure if it had too much info or not enough。 I'd rather have a bigger book with more info (which might be Erlewine's Guitar Player Repair Guide—I gotta check that out next。)Half of it is stuff I hope I never have to deal with (locking tuners, Floyd Roses, pretty finishes), and I wish it was more in depth on other stuff (nuts, frets)。 。。。more

I'm new at guitar。 I found some of the info and tips from the book to be helpful, but I think I'll realize the full value of it when I've had more experience w/ the instrument。 The DVD was no big deal。 Author seems knowledgeable。 I'm new at guitar。 I found some of the info and tips from the book to be helpful, but I think I'll realize the full value of it when I've had more experience w/ the instrument。 The DVD was no big deal。 Author seems knowledgeable。 。。。more

How To Make Your Electric Guitar Play Great is a set up and maintenance guide by the renowned luthier, Dan Erlewine。 Erlewine has been in the guitar repair biz for decades and is reputed to be the most knowledgeable guitar guy around。 Whether or not this is true, he is a leading light in the realm of guitar repair and definitely knows his stuff。Unlike Erlewine’s excellent Guitar Player Repair Guide, this book concentrates solely on set up and maintenance。 Things like adjusting string height and How To Make Your Electric Guitar Play Great is a set up and maintenance guide by the renowned luthier, Dan Erlewine。 Erlewine has been in the guitar repair biz for decades and is reputed to be the most knowledgeable guitar guy around。 Whether or not this is true, he is a leading light in the realm of guitar repair and definitely knows his stuff。Unlike Erlewine’s excellent Guitar Player Repair Guide, this book concentrates solely on set up and maintenance。 Things like adjusting string height and tension, pickup height, bridge height and neck bow as well as cleaning and polishing。 You’ll learn how to turn your Strat into a hard tail or solve tuning issues with those pesky floating tremolos。 There’s an interesting section at the end of the book devoted to case studies of specific luthiers working on famous folks’ guitars。 Erlewine also saw fit to include a sheet of handy, dandy radius gauges for setting up your guitar。 You can pop these die cut gauges out of the bound plastic sheet in the back and use them to determine neck radius and adjust your bridge saddles to match。 Thanks, Dan!If you already know a fair amount about keeping your guitar healthy, this book will provide some new insights and ideas。 But I especially recommend it to those just starting out with the electric guitar。 How To Make Your Electric Guitar Play Great could be the best friend you and your guitar will have。 I went about it all backwards, playing guitar for almost two decades before delving into set up and maintenance。 Every electric guitarist should know how to keep their instrument in shape and this book will show you how to do it。 。。。more

Great book。 It got me up to speed on how to set up my guitar and I'm very new to guitars。 I was able to mostly fully setup my guitar with no previous experience and simple tools。 I even took my guitar to a professional after I was done to see if I needed anything extra and they commented on how well I did with the setup。 Great book。 It got me up to speed on how to set up my guitar and I'm very new to guitars。 I was able to mostly fully setup my guitar with no previous experience and simple tools。 I even took my guitar to a professional after I was done to see if I needed anything extra and they commented on how well I did with the setup。 。。。more

A really great refernece tool for people who want to know how to perfrorm simple maintenance on their instruments, as opposed to paying somebody else to do it for you。Work covers beginner, intermediate and advanced levels, but all of the essential stuff is really easy and more often than not, you'll find that most of the tools you need are already lying around the house。 A really great refernece tool for people who want to know how to perfrorm simple maintenance on their instruments, as opposed to paying somebody else to do it for you。Work covers beginner, intermediate and advanced levels, but all of the essential stuff is really easy and more often than not, you'll find that most of the tools you need are already lying around the house。 。。。more
