Summary

Pre-order Stephen Fry's bewitching retelling of the legend of Troy - a tale of love and war, passion and power - following his sensational bestsellers MYTHOS and HEROES

'Troy。 The most marvellous kingdom in all the world。 The Jewel of the Aegean。 Glittering Ilion, the city that rose and fell not once but twice 。 。 。'

The story of Troy speaks to all of us - the kidnapping of Helen, a queen celebrated for her beauty, sees the Greeks launch a thousand ships against that great city, to which they will lay siege for ten whole and very bloody years。

It is Zeus, the king of the gods, who triggers war when he asks the Trojan prince Paris to judge the fairest goddess of them all。 Aphrodite bribes Paris with the heart of Helen, wife of King Menelaus of the Greeks, and naturally, nature takes its course。

It is a terrible, brutal war with casualties on all sides。 The Greeks cannot defeat the Trojans - since Achilles, the Greek's boldest warrior, is consumed with jealousy over an ally's choice of lover, the Trojan slave Briseis, and will not fight 。 。 。

The stage is set for the oldest and greatest story ever told, where monstrous passions meet the highest ideals and the lowest cunning。

In Troy you will find heroism and hatred, love and loss, revenge and regret, desire and despair。 It is these human passions, written bloodily in the sands of a distant shore, that still speak to us today。

Troy is a myth in which we seek the truth about ourselves, which Stephen Fry brings breathtakingly to life for our modern age。

PRAISE FOR MYTHOS AND HEROES:

'A romp through the lives of ancient Greek gods。 Fry is at his story-telling best 。 。 。 the gods will be pleased'
Times

'A head-spinning marathon of legends'
Guardian

'An Olympian feat。 The gods seem to be smiling on Fry - his myths are definitely a hit'
Evening Standard

'An odyssey through Greek mythology。 Brilliant 。 。 。 all hail Stephen Fry'

Just amazing!!! All of his Greek books are awesome。 I listened to them and he is a fabulous narrator。

A deep pleasure reading Fry’s account of the Iliad。 I am falling prey to comparing Troy to my recent reads by Madeleine Miller (Song of Achilles) and Natalie Haynes (A Thousand Ships)。 Whilst dearest Stephen Fry writes superbly, I was hoping for some more hitherto undiscovered context, interpetation and compassion。 I was very glad for his portrayal of Helen and Paris, Odysseus, and Priam; as well as the description of the Sacking。

I have read different versions of the story of Troy。 I have been confused by different versions of the story of Troy。 None have been as easy to follow and well explained as Stephen Fry's。 It's a marvel of well-organized data and carefully plotted characters and relations that simplify the incredibly complex work and the cast of characters of Homer into an easy to follow and understand narrative that lays out the folly and savagery of the war of Troy。Don't let the nigh unpronounceable names and c I have read different versions of the story of Troy。 I have been confused by different versions of the story of Troy。 None have been as easy to follow and well explained as Stephen Fry's。 It's a marvel of well-organized data and carefully plotted characters and relations that simplify the incredibly complex work and the cast of characters of Homer into an easy to follow and understand narrative that lays out the folly and savagery of the war of Troy。Don't let the nigh unpronounceable names and copious use of footnotes keep you from reading this。 The story itself is an epic for the ages for a reason, and this edition is the easiest to read I've ever encountered。 Many thanks to NetGalley and Chronicle Books for the educational read! 。。。more

Stephen Fry has an excellent way with words。 This was a very good retelling of the Illiad and went into much more details than I've previously read (not having actually read the Illiad myself)。 I thought it was interesting and smooth, with excellent pacing。 Having read this one, I would be very tempted to read his other two Greek mythology books as well。 Stephen Fry has an excellent way with words。 This was a very good retelling of the Illiad and went into much more details than I've previously read (not having actually read the Illiad myself)。 I thought it was interesting and smooth, with excellent pacing。 Having read this one, I would be very tempted to read his other two Greek mythology books as well。 。。。more

I really do adore this series。 Stephen Fry is an absolute master at making even the most complicated of the Greek Myths feel accessible, and that it's all finished off with a healthy dose of humour, and the odd tidbit of quite interesting little facts, and you've got a wonderful afternoon read。So wonderful, in fact, that I went right through the afternoon, into the evening, and suddenly realised at half one in the morning that I'd finished the whole thing。 I really do adore this series。 Stephen Fry is an absolute master at making even the most complicated of the Greek Myths feel accessible, and that it's all finished off with a healthy dose of humour, and the odd tidbit of quite interesting little facts, and you've got a wonderful afternoon read。So wonderful, in fact, that I went right through the afternoon, into the evening, and suddenly realised at half one in the morning that I'd finished the whole thing。 。。。more

This is Stephen Fry's third foray into his Greek Mythology Retold series。 I listened to Fry's narration of Troy, as I did with the first two。 Fry's voice is delicious。 I'm not sure why you'd want to read these at all, the audiobooks have got to be the far preferable way to consume them。 I read the Iliad earlier this year, and I've got to say that these two bodies of work complement each other really well。 I think you could take The Iliad, The Odyssey, and Stephen Fry's audio books and make a sol This is Stephen Fry's third foray into his Greek Mythology Retold series。 I listened to Fry's narration of Troy, as I did with the first two。 Fry's voice is delicious。 I'm not sure why you'd want to read these at all, the audiobooks have got to be the far preferable way to consume them。 I read the Iliad earlier this year, and I've got to say that these two bodies of work complement each other really well。 I think you could take The Iliad, The Odyssey, and Stephen Fry's audio books and make a solid Greek Mythology course out of them。 Or at least that's what it's felt like to consume them all in such a short period of time。 As for the work itself。 It contains Fry's usual cleverness。 I particularly appreciate Fry's continued contextual inserts that give historical or mythological context。 The format and delivery of Fry's mythologies is so rich and fun that I'm sure I'll listen to them many times in my life。 I have a feeling these will be pulled out on road trips and shared with my children when they're the right age and interest。 。。。more

I really love the way Stephen Fry tells a story。 He soins the tale to nake it relatable without losing any substance。 Homers stories are retold with dignity。 Can't wait to see what he does next。 I really love the way Stephen Fry tells a story。 He soins the tale to nake it relatable without losing any substance。 Homers stories are retold with dignity。 Can't wait to see what he does next。 。。。more

Wish I could give this book 6 stars。 A colossal, staggering effort。 Fry deftly recounts hundreds of characters, years, and events while still adding brevity to the story。 The Trojan War is so accessible, and the heroes and villains are completely flawed and human (even when they're not)。 I envy his brain。 Hoping his next retelling will be The Odyssey?? Troy, the last book in Stephen Frye’s Mythos series did not disappoint。 The story of the taking of Helene and the fall of Troy is retold with more detail than the main source material, The Iliad。 Frye is an excellent narrator and is a master at bribing out the personalities of the long familiar characters of this tragedy。 I have seen the books in stores and they have beautiful pictures and illustrations, but Frye’s performance is worth devouring this trilogy in audio。

This was。。。comprehensive。 It wasn't bad, but, once I got started, I was never excited to pick it back up。 There's so very many names。 Fry does a great job of laying it all out and tying the pieces together but it is tedious, even with the occasional humorous quips。 This is getting rave reviews, so maybe it's just me or the timing。Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for a digital review copy。 Publish date June 22, 2021。 This was。。。comprehensive。 It wasn't bad, but, once I got started, I was never excited to pick it back up。 There's so very many names。 Fry does a great job of laying it all out and tying the pieces together but it is tedious, even with the occasional humorous quips。 This is getting rave reviews, so maybe it's just me or the timing。Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for a digital review copy。 Publish date June 22, 2021。 。。。more

My favourite so far of the series, I like how all the stories pull into the central narrative, including some from the other books。

oh yeah i finished this one。 anyway i hope stephen fry rounds his retelling series out with the war’s aftermath, the oresteia and the odyssey and maybe the aeneid。 the age of gods and heroes and men is over。 just history now

Stephen Fry recounts the war of Troy, beginning with the families of the major players and ending with the sacking of Troy。 (The Iliad only covers about a quarter of the story。) His rendition is humorous and very approachable, his narration is brilliant as usual。 I knew the story, even if I did not recall every character (there are too many), and it was a lot of fun to experience it in his telling。 Whether you know the story or not, this is time well spent - and definitely on audio。

The final work of Stephen Fry's Greek Mythology series culminates on the ten-year Trojan War。 The Gods of Olympian fervor, introduced in Mythos, are cast among the heroic, half-god and human passions of Heroes, in an enduring battle of Troy。 This shorter-sized conclusion to the series is the clear pinnacle and an impressive "pay-off" to a phenomenal series。 The story of Troy is a similar convergence of multiple source materials (Homer, Virgil, Euripides, Sophocles, etc。,) found in other "common The final work of Stephen Fry's Greek Mythology series culminates on the ten-year Trojan War。 The Gods of Olympian fervor, introduced in Mythos, are cast among the heroic, half-god and human passions of Heroes, in an enduring battle of Troy。 This shorter-sized conclusion to the series is the clear pinnacle and an impressive "pay-off" to a phenomenal series。 The story of Troy is a similar convergence of multiple source materials (Homer, Virgil, Euripides, Sophocles, etc。,) found in other "common reader" works of Greek Mythology - Gods and Heroes of Ancient Greece (1838) - Schwab - Mythology: Timeless Tales of Gods and Heroes (1942) - HamiltonAll three authors organized a similar story in structure from the individual materials; in this context, there was the least divergence in plot and direction when compared the individual, disparate tales within Fry’s Mythos and Heroes。 There remained a "fresh" tone of modernity in Fry's (2021) retelling of the Trojan war。 Comparatively, Schwab (1838) remains more faithful to the source material, albeit towards his detriment, by reproducing inordinate details and spurious lists。 Unsurprisingly, his reproduction of the Trojan war is the longest in page-length (300+ pgs)。 On the other extreme is Hamilton (1942) with a rough overview that barely covers ~50 pages。 。。。more

I’ve enjoyed all 3 of Stephen Fry’s Greek books; this is my favourite as it’s an area of mythology that I previously was not very knowledgeable about, so it was great to read it all laid out in a comprehensive, yet relatively concise, way。 Looking forward to the inevitable sequel; his take on The Odyssey is surely just around the corner

I expected this to be funnier and more character-driven。I absolutely hated how name-dense it was。 I know Fry says at the start that we're not expected to remember most of the names, but nonetheless I found the sheer amount of them distracting。 So much so that I struggled to keep up with half of the "main cast"。And this is even though I studied Greek mythology extensively at school in Italy, so it's not like the story was new to me。 I expected this to be funnier and more character-driven。I absolutely hated how name-dense it was。 I know Fry says at the start that we're not expected to remember most of the names, but nonetheless I found the sheer amount of them distracting。 So much so that I struggled to keep up with half of the "main cast"。And this is even though I studied Greek mythology extensively at school in Italy, so it's not like the story was new to me。 。。。more
