Summary

The last thing Jamie Watson wants is a rugby scholarship to Sherringford, a Connecticut prep school just an hour away from his estranged father。 But that’s not the only complication: Sherringford is also home to Charlotte Holmes, the famous detective’s great-great-great-granddaughter, who has inherited not only Sherlock’s genius but also his volatile temperament。 From everything Jamie has heard about Charlotte, it seems safer to admire her from afar。

From the moment they meet, there’s a tense energy between them, and they seem more destined to be rivals than anything else。 But when a Sherringford student dies under suspicious circumstances, ripped straight from the most terrifying of the Sherlock Holmes stories, Jamie can no longer afford to keep his distance。 Jamie and Charlotte are being framed for murder, and only Charlotte can clear their names。 But danger is mounting and nowhere is safe—and the only people they can trust are each other。

Not my usual sort of book - I generally stay away from things where murder/death are the driving plot point - I did enjoy it though。 I appreciated that the author acknowledged Sherlock's vices and how they translated to Charlotte。 It would have been easy to write that out but I think (in a way) she's honoring the source material by not glossing over the "bad" bits。 As an introduction to the series I enjoyed the way it had easter eggs for fans of Arthur Conan Doyle's work。 Cavallaro made several Not my usual sort of book - I generally stay away from things where murder/death are the driving plot point - I did enjoy it though。 I appreciated that the author acknowledged Sherlock's vices and how they translated to Charlotte。 It would have been easy to write that out but I think (in a way) she's honoring the source material by not glossing over the "bad" bits。 As an introduction to the series I enjoyed the way it had easter eggs for fans of Arthur Conan Doyle's work。 Cavallaro made several nods to previous cases while also establishing Charlotte and James' somewhat diverging storyline at the same time。 As I said, this isn't really my forte, but I'd be tempted to give the others a go。This book was read for the 52 Book Club challenge, #31。 Shares a similar title to another book。 。。。more

a great mystery :)

This book was an intriguing read。 It’s a murder mystery that follows the story of the descendants of Sherlock Holmes (Charlotte Holmes) and John Watson (Jamie Watson), who become friends after a student was murdered and they both become suspects。 This book does contain a lot of mature themes and I would recommend for readers 14+ (Young Adult)。 Overall it was a real page turner!

I'd put this somewhere around a 2。5 and a 3。It wasn't necessarily bad, per se, it was just disappointing。 I think the thing I disliked most was how every character was pretty much an exact copy of Sherlock Holmes' characters, all within the same exact set paths, and this was never questioned。 Like, upon meeting Charlotte, James is already determined to be her friend/ with her, even though he barely knows her; it's the expected thing for them to hang out/ work together, and even the villain is mo I'd put this somewhere around a 2。5 and a 3。It wasn't necessarily bad, per se, it was just disappointing。 I think the thing I disliked most was how every character was pretty much an exact copy of Sherlock Holmes' characters, all within the same exact set paths, and this was never questioned。 Like, upon meeting Charlotte, James is already determined to be her friend/ with her, even though he barely knows her; it's the expected thing for them to hang out/ work together, and even the villain is more or less the original Sherlock Holmes villain。 And all of this wouldn't bother me (I knew what I was getting into) if any of it had been at least questioned or resisted。 Like, imagine if Charlotte and James had resisted working together on the case entirely or both had resisted getting to know each other/ had been mostly uninterested with the other until they were repeatedly forced together against their will by their circumstances。 Wouldn't that have been a much more interesting dynamic- trying to fight against fate and other people's expectations。 Instead, we get instant attraction on James' part and instant partners after the crime。 It just relies too much on essentialism, which ultimately makes it uninteresting。 Secondly, I didn't really like either character or believe their dynamic。 James wasn't too bad, but Charlotte was just entirely unlikable。 She redeems herself slightly by the end, but not enough。 Because of this, their relationship and dynamic just feels forced, unbalanced, and toxic。 I think it is meant to be this way somewhat, but we are also meant to believe that they care for each other and that they both have reason to。 The problem was, I just couldn't understand why James would like Charlotte at all since she didn't treat him well and had very few good qualities。The mystery was fine, although it dragged a bit towards the middle of the book。 I think the ending, when things finally becan to come together was exciting, and the writing wasn't half bad。Overall: just okay 。。。more

Soon after, another student gets brutally attacked and left to choke on a diamond。 What’s common between the 2 crimes is that they’re copycats of the classic Sherlock Holmes stories。 Obviously, someone’s trying to frame them and wants to get their attention。 It’s up to Charlotte and Jamie to uncover the truth before they get thrown into prison for the crimes they didn’t commit。 This was a classic whodunnit packed with suspense and healthy doses of Sherlockian flare。 Charlotte has the brains, addiction and violent temper just like her great-great-great-grandfather, while Jamie is an aspiring writer and still learning the ropes on how to be a perfect partner to Holmes。 I love their complex personalities and their dynamic relationship。 There’s an undeniable attraction between the 2 which I hoped will develop in the subsequent books。 The story is very engaging, brilliant and I totally enjoyed reading it。 The snarkiness and badassery of Charlotte is the perfect contrast to Jamie’s empathetic and gentlemanly ways。 I just love their tandem! And, what I also loved is that even the Moriartys get to have roles in this series。 Yep, Professor Moriarty’s descendants still get entwined with his nemesis’ family。 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 If you’re Sherlocked like me and can’t get enough of SH stories, then you need to get your hands on this series! I’m currently on book 2 and I’m excited to find out where the story will take me。 。。。more

I already am planning to read the rest of this series and possibly others。Recommendations:In general if you like。。。- Sherlock Holmes Movies- Elementary or Sherlock Tv Shows- Arthur Conan Doyle Books- Young Adult retellings- Young adult mystery books set in a boarding school- Genderbend retellingsRecommendations related to this book:By the Same Author: (2nd book in Charlotte Holmes series) (3rd book in Charlotte Holmes series) (4th book in Charlotte Holmes series) (standalone) (standalone)Mystery/Thrillers: (First book in a series) (First book in a series) Review: https://www。goodreads。com/review/show。。。 Set in a Boarding School: (First in a Series) (New Book)Thriller Retellings: (A Thriller version of Breakfast Club and the first in a series) (Another thriller version of breakfast club)Genderbend Retellings: (Retelling of the Arthur and Merlin) (Retelling of Robin Hood or more like Will Scarlet)Other Retellings: 。。。more

3。5 or 3。75Holmes and Watson are imperfectly perfect。 The mystery was good though some things were glaringly obvious while others went over my head。 The writing was fast-paced and a joy to read, the depiction of eating disorders and other issues was not addressed properly and watered down both in emotions and consequences。 The relationship between them developed a bit too quickly which should present more problems later on in my opinion as they don’t know each other as well as they think they do 3。5 or 3。75Holmes and Watson are imperfectly perfect。 The mystery was good though some things were glaringly obvious while others went over my head。 The writing was fast-paced and a joy to read, the depiction of eating disorders and other issues was not addressed properly and watered down both in emotions and consequences。 The relationship between them developed a bit too quickly which should present more problems later on in my opinion as they don’t know each other as well as they think they do。 Overall a fun fast read with a deep focus on characters。 I like holmes’ character though I can’t seem to entirely trust her。 Jamie was nice enough though not a lot of descriptions of his interests and hobbies。 It seems in this book the spotlight is on Holmes。 。。。more

This was the first physical book that I owned。 I actually had this since 2018 but never finished it because I was too busy。 But when I reread it this year, I wasn’t able to take my eyes off of it。 I found a book that suited my taste, it was about sleuthing and of course, Sherlock type of books。 It was fun to read, there was suspense, comedy and a twist of romance。 The reason I didn’t rate this a 5 star because of it’s subplot - romance。 I am not a big fan of romance。 This was a fast paced book a This was the first physical book that I owned。 I actually had this since 2018 but never finished it because I was too busy。 But when I reread it this year, I wasn’t able to take my eyes off of it。 I found a book that suited my taste, it was about sleuthing and of course, Sherlock type of books。 It was fun to read, there was suspense, comedy and a twist of romance。 The reason I didn’t rate this a 5 star because of it’s subplot - romance。 I am not a big fan of romance。 This was a fast paced book and would really drag you and won’t let you let your hands off of it。 I really recommend this book! i really don’t know what to say about this book。 tbh i found it interesting and i enjoyed reading it, but i really didn’t understand most parts of the book。 idk if it’s just me and the fact that i was reading 5 books at the same time and mostly at night when i was too tired to think, or it’s because it was really confusing。 however, i did have fun reading this but like i said, i was very lost

Okay so, this has a lot to unpack。 1) PUT A TRIGGER WARNING IN YOUR BOOK IF YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT DRUG USE AND SEXUAL ASSAULT! 2) The main dude was so annoying and like in love with Charlotte for no reason。 3) He was also not really understanding of the whole sexual assault situation at times。 4) their friendship? crazy, weird, didn't make sense。 5) Charlotte? Fun, but also needs to go to therapy and used to be a horrible person。 That's all I can remember but really, the book just didn't work IMO Okay so, this has a lot to unpack。 1) PUT A TRIGGER WARNING IN YOUR BOOK IF YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT DRUG USE AND SEXUAL ASSAULT! 2) The main dude was so annoying and like in love with Charlotte for no reason。 3) He was also not really understanding of the whole sexual assault situation at times。 4) their friendship? crazy, weird, didn't make sense。 5) Charlotte? This book was good。 It was a little slow for my taste, especially for the genre it was it。 However, I really enjoyed the spin on the whole Watson-Holmes idea。
