Summary

I liked the overarching narrative of this book, which gave voice to many unique perspectives that I didn’t have previous exposure to。 I did have trouble keeping up with so many main characters, and I also felt like I was often just getting invested in a story when we abruptly changed to a new protagonist。 I had similar struggles with Tommy Orange’s “There, There”, so maybe polyphonic novels just aren’t my thing 🤷🏼‍♀️

4。5 I loved this book! It explores so many ways to be and live as a womxn。 Each story is a unique experience of womxnhood。 It gave me a sense that there is not any right way to be a womxn, it is enough just simply to BE。 What I love most is that, although this is a collection of short stories, the story of each person weaves in with the others。 There are some stories that cover multiple generations and that feel so special - to see how one led to another and another。 The only reason I gave it a 4。5 I loved this book! Amazing book, really came full circle at the end after I was a bit confused as to how one of the characters’ stories fit in but then it all made sense。 I loved the diversity, how the stories spanned over a wide time period and into the present。 I loved how everyone was linked in some special or unintended way。 I loved the writing style and the way it was laid out。 A very small issue for me however was the way that Yazz spoke, as it was a bit of an exaggeration on how young people speak/ use slan Amazing book, really came full circle at the end after I was a bit confused as to how one of the characters’ stories fit in but then it all made sense。 I loved the diversity, how the stories spanned over a wide time period and into the present。 I loved how everyone was linked in some special or unintended way。 I loved the writing style and the way it was laid out。 A very small issue for me however was the way that Yazz spoke, as it was a bit of an exaggeration on how young people speak/ use slang (but that didn’t really bother me)。 Amazing book overall, Bernadine Evaristo is such a great writer ❤️ 。。。more

Couldn’t listen to the audio book。 Heavy accent prevented good comprehension。 Didn’t finish the book。

Not sure I ever got used to the complete lack of punctuation in this but it didn't spoil my overall enjoyment of the book。 I found the characters fascinating and the stories enlightening, it spoke to me, which I really didn't expect。 Not sure I ever got used to the complete lack of punctuation in this but it didn't spoil my overall enjoyment of the book。 I found the characters fascinating and the stories enlightening, it spoke to me, which I really didn't expect。 。。。more

Although it took me forever to finish, I am so so so glad I did。 Beautifully written and composed, almost as a poem。 Never read about so many so well-rounded characters and I feel like I have aged 15 years in life experience。 Would recommend to anyone!

I had this book on my To Read list for a long time, and just after I got it on my Kindle, I received a hard copy on my birthday。 So now I have this well-acclaimed book in my living room, I can't just have it there and leave it on DNF mode。 Because to cut things short, I don't like it。 And it's not just that I'm not a fan of the spoken word whole situation in books, because I loved Jose Saramago's "Blindness"。 It may be a hard to pull off writing style, but in "Blindness" I felt all the things I I had this book on my To Read list for a long time, and just after I got it on my Kindle, I received a hard copy on my birthday。 So now I have this well-acclaimed book in my living room, I can't just have it there and leave it on DNF mode。 Because to cut things short, I don't like it。 And it's not just that I'm not a fan of the spoken word whole situation in books, because I loved Jose Saramago's "Blindness"。 It may be a hard to pull off writing style, but in "Blindness" I felt all the things I should've。 In this case, I would say that unconventional punctuation is the least of my problems。 So many characters and stories, and I did not care for any of them: inauthentic dialogues and personalities, superficial and conceited women, all those little things that do NOT happen in real life, such as the reaction a woman has when she meets her daughter's boyfriend "she wanted to run her hands all over him, massage his balls, feel him harden at her touch" and it's not that I'm a literary prude, I mean I love everything Melissa Broder comes up with in her books, but when I read her, that's authentic。 I get the feeling that for Bernadine Evaristo, it's all just for "let's shock some patriarchy and make the moms want to rub some teenage balls" Anyways。。。 I digress。 What I did yesterday for a change was to start a new book, Tatiana Țîbuleac's "Vara în care mama a avut ochii verzi" and I finished it in a couple of hours。 I laughed, and I cried and cried some more。 I loved every second of it。 That reminded me that it should never be such a struggle to read a book, however well-received it might be。 。。。more

For this book, first of hers I've read, Bernadine Evaristo found a way of writing, sentences uncapitalised, almost unpunctuated, that followed the rhythms of speech。 Her presentation on the page quickly became unnoticeable。 I got a tad confused towards the end between all the characters。 Not that it mattered。 I knew, I know people like this, but never before writing like this。 For this book, first of hers I've read, Bernadine Evaristo found a way of writing, sentences uncapitalised, almost unpunctuated, that followed the rhythms of speech。 Her presentation on the page quickly became unnoticeable。 I got a tad confused towards the end between all the characters。 Not that it mattered。 I knew, I know people like this, but never before writing like this。 。。。more

THIS BOOK WAS IT!!!!! It was so good。 One of those rare books where I felt like I was truly in the shoes of another person, and this gave multiple perspectives。 I’m obsessed with the pacing and the very personal knowledge I gained from this。 I’m so happy I listened to this on audio too。 After reading this I feel so full of life。 Booker Prize well deserved。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I’m not sure I enjoyed it。 Hard to follow for a younger audience I guess。。。 As I’ve been reading in other reviews, the ending isn’t really much, it was expected and it goes through too much to reach that conclusion。 Too many characters lacking depth。 In no moment did I really FEEL much。 It was all just a narration non stop and some sort of feminist manifesto? 。。。more

A compilation of stories voiced by a diverse range of black British women, girls and one non-binary character。 All these women are from different families and backgrounds, with different experiences。。。 but all share the same experience of living in a white dominant culture。 The structure of the book was quite unconventional, however I enjoyed how the sentences didn't begin or end, they just seemed to flow。 It created a real and honest feel to the narrative, like we were really entering the mind A compilation of stories voiced by a diverse range of black British women, girls and one non-binary character。 All these women are from different families and backgrounds, with different experiences。。。 but all share the same experience of living in a white dominant culture。 The structure of the book was quite unconventional, however I enjoyed how the sentences didn't begin or end, they just seemed to flow。 It created a real and honest feel to the narrative, like we were really entering the mind of each character, hearing their thoughts and feeling their experiences。 It was like poetry。 What I also enjoyed is that you will meet one character in another character's story, who you may not like in particular。 But when you read about that character's own story you gain this understanding of what they have gone though and their experiences, changing your perception on them immediately。 This book is about ordinary people and their beautiful messy lives。 Evaristo creates a straightforward but equally poetic narrative about real and normal people voicing their unique experiences as a woman。 And I loved every single story! 。。。more

Starting reading this book I was quite thrown off by writing style but having finished it I think it added so much emotional depth。 Besides that I loved how the different characters were intertwined。 I am excited to re-read this book because there is so much more to the story than you believe when you start reading it。

I was recommended this book by a few people over the first lockdown and decided to give it a read。 A year later I have finally finished reading it。 This book states it’s a ‘Britain as it has never been told’ but honestly it’s a Britain, from the point of view of privilege sprinkled with diversity。 Rather than about a diverse group of black women’s experiences in the UK。 All the character profiles, which is how they read, have little substance and grasp at straws to be connected。 So many of the w I was recommended this book by a few people over the first lockdown and decided to give it a read。 A year later I have finally finished reading it。 This book states it’s a ‘Britain as it has never been told’ but honestly it’s a Britain, from the point of view of privilege sprinkled with diversity。 Rather than about a diverse group of black women’s experiences in the UK。 All the character profiles, which is how they read, have little substance and grasp at straws to be connected。 So many of the women’s stories are led by the need to be married even though they are successful in their own right, or as in one story to have sex with her daughters boyfriend/turned husband。 No effort was put into dealing with the staggering amount of trauma a lot of the characters go through or even to not step full body into stereotypes which directly harm a lot of ethnic groups。 Al in all, won’t be recommending and would advise against reading as it feels time wasting。 。。。more

This is one of the most unusual books I've ever read。 So, while reading it and upon finishing it I have a very mixed emotions about it。 Hmm。。 I actually can't decide if I like it。 It's just so confusing and it gave me this strange after taste。 Like getting wasted at a party and waking up with a very bad hang over and can't decide if I had a great time or did I just make a very bad decision ? I really enjoyed the first 300 pages, but the last 152 felt like an eternity。 It seemed like the author lost her motivation and started repeating the storyline while at the same time making up a bunch of improbable events。 I pushed through just to not leave it unfinished。 I'll unfortunately probably only remember how much I hated the ending instead of remembering how much I enjoyed the beginning。 I really enjoyed the first 300 pages, but the last 152 felt like an eternity。 It seemed like the author lost her motivation and started repeating the storyline while at the same time making up a bunch of improbable events。 I pushed through just to not leave it unfinished。 I'll unfortunately probably only remember how much I hated the ending instead of remembering how much I enjoyed the beginning。 。。。more

I absolutely loved this book。 It’s intelligent, very readable, with great characters and tackles some of society’s challenges today。 Some might say that these topics have already been addressed in other literature but I would argue that this book presents them in a unique, non-belligerent way。 I also loved the writing style, which facilitated emphasis on key words and messages。

At first I didn't quite understand what Evaristo was going for here, but around the halfway mark it started to really come together for me。 Unfortunately the first chapter/character seems to be among the worse ones, it got better with the second and had me convinced with the third。 There even were a few parts later that put tears into my eyes。Although I do have to admit that, and maybe that's just me, it's pretty hard to keep track of all the characters and their backstories, complete with their At first I didn't quite understand what Evaristo was going for here, but around the halfway mark it started to really come together for me。 Unfortunately the first chapter/character seems to be among the worse ones, it got better with the second and had me convinced with the third。 There even were a few parts later that put tears into my eyes。Although I do have to admit that, and maybe that's just me, it's pretty hard to keep track of all the characters and their backstories, complete with their whole family history and all that, I think it's all just connected enough to still work in the end。 。。。more
