Summary

The ultimate guide on leadership from the #1 New York Times bestselling co-author of Extreme Ownership

In the military, a field manual provides instructions in simple, clear, step-by-step language to help soldiers complete their mission。 In the civilian sector, books offer information on everything from fixing a leaky faucet to developing an effective workout program to cooking a good steak。

But what if you are promoted into a new position leading your former peers? What if you don’t get selected for the leadership position you wanted? How do you overcome imposter syndrome, when you aren’t sure you should be leading? As a leader, how do you judiciously dole out punishment? What about reward? How do you build trust with your both your superiors and your subordinates? How do you deliver truthful criticism up and down the chain of command in a tactful and positive way?

These are all questions about leadership—the most complex of all human endeavors。 And while there are books out there that provide solid leadership principles, books like Extreme Ownership and The Dichotomy of Leadership, there is no leadership field manual that provides a direct, situational, pragmatic how-to guide that anyone can instantly put to use。

Until now。 Leadership Strategy and Tactics explains how to take leadership theory, quickly translate that theory into applicable strategy, and then put leadership into action at a tactical level。 This book is the solution that leaders at every level need—not just to understand the leadership game, but also how to play the leadership game, and win it。

Some good points and stories but this book really drags at points with the constant military stories and many that don't actually have anything to do with the point he's trying to get across。 Some good points and stories but this book really drags at points with the constant military stories and many that don't actually have anything to do with the point he's trying to get across。 。。。more

A decent follow up to extreme ownership。 Lacking in new concepts though

This book builds on the previous two and provides plenty of actionable content for leaders top to bottom。

Interesting principles and very good examples, however the reading feels repetitive as they appear randomly scattered through and not having a clear order。 For this same reason, I wouldn't know which part of the book to revisit for a specific situation。 Interesting principles and very good examples, however the reading feels repetitive as they appear randomly scattered through and not having a clear order。 For this same reason, I wouldn't know which part of the book to revisit for a specific situation。 。。。more

I picked this up because I wanted to hear how Jocko approached strategy。 This book was not about strategy。 It's about how to be a good leader。 And it excelled at that, in Jocko's super-manly way。 Some takeaways。。。 Subvert your ego。。。 As the leader, you don't have to be right, you don't have to have all the good ideas, don't be the loudest voice in the room。 If I could summarize it in a sentence, it would be that "ego is the enemy。" There there were many tactics for taming know-it-alls, managing I picked this up because I wanted to hear how Jocko approached strategy。 This book was not about strategy。 It's about how to be a good leader。 And it excelled at that, in Jocko's super-manly way。 Some takeaways。。。 Subvert your ego。。。 As the leader, you don't have to be right, you don't have to have all the good ideas, don't be the loudest voice in the room。 If I could summarize it in a sentence, it would be that "ego is the enemy。" There there were many tactics for taming know-it-alls, managing up, dealing with micro-managers, giving feedback to repeat offenders。 Good, good, good stuff。 。。。more

It is a practical handbook on how to manage and lead withing an organization, particularly helpful for large organizations。 The audiobook is narrated by the author, who used to be in the Navy SEALS。 I must admit his military style of speaking can be intense for those of us that don't gravitate naturally towards the more assertive, testosterone filled talking style。 But, that aside the book is very practical and covers a lot of good ground, with good anecdotes that apply in any organization, not It is a practical handbook on how to manage and lead withing an organization, particularly helpful for large organizations。 The audiobook is narrated by the author, who used to be in the Navy SEALS。 I must admit his military style of speaking can be intense for those of us that don't gravitate naturally towards the more assertive, testosterone filled talking style。 But, that aside the book is very practical and covers a lot of good ground, with good anecdotes that apply in any organization, not just in the military。 。。。more

Jocko Willink is a former Navy Seal who has taken the skills and leadership that he learned on the Seal Teams and written those leadership tactics down for everyone to learn and enjoy。 His writing is succinct。 The tactics are sound。 I went to the library to buy his Extreme Ownership book, and ended up walking out with this one instead。 I didn't even know this book existed prior to that。。。I have read in other reviews that, unless you're familiar with the principles of "Extreme Ownership", you mig Jocko Willink is a former Navy Seal who has taken the skills and leadership that he learned on the Seal Teams and written those leadership tactics down for everyone to learn and enjoy。 His writing is succinct。 The tactics are sound。 I went to the library to buy his Extreme Ownership book, and ended up walking out with this one instead。 I didn't even know this book existed prior to that。。。I have read in other reviews that, unless you're familiar with the principles of "Extreme Ownership", you might not enjoy this book or understand its implications as well as you otherwise would-- many recommend reading his other books before picking this one up。 While I haven't read Extreme Ownership, I am familiar with the concepts of Extreme Ownership and the Dichotomy of Leadership。 I felt the book summarized the leadership tactics from his other books in this field manual。I first heard about Jocko on the Ben Shapiro Show podcast where he did the Sunday Special Interview。 I really liked a lot of what Jocko had to say about leadership, about being a Navy Seal, about Extreme Ownership。 I've also listened to Jocko on the Jordan Peterson podcast, and on some of Jordan Peterson's YouTube Videos。 Jocko also has a podcast where he's interviewed Peterson。 (Link to a video)The book itself is a great summary of many of the wonderful things I've seen around the internet or heard on podcasts。 It really is set up like a field manual-- where you can go to the Table of Contents with a specific issue, look it up, and the book gives you (leader or subordinate) tips on how to approach a certain situation。 And。。。 it works。It's not meant to be read from cover-to-cover, but I did it anyway because I wanted to soak it all up。 At first, I did jump around in the book, but then I decided to read every word and every page。 I soaked it all up。 Took me a bit -- I don't have a huge amount of free time-- but I did enjoy every moment reading。 I learned so much。I did apply some of the strategy and tactics at my job。 I work for a big, lumbering agency。 As a recently licensed engineer, I'm now eligible for higher paying positions because I can now seal plans and specifications。 Reading the book helped me deal with a few things-- I was getting paid less than people in my same area, even though I had more experience and did more of the hard work。 This book helped me not to feel used and abused。 I was able to rationalize my position-- to put aside my ego and just be happy。 It also helped me see I needed to make an ultimatum。 I did。 In a way。 I applied for another position that did have the higher pay grade。 I interviewed and got the job offer。 So, in a sense, the book pushed me to maximize my potential。。。 and to do it in a way that didn't burn bridges when I left。 I explained why I was leaving, even though I loved my work。。。 and I did it out in the open and with honesty and respect。 I feel much better about starting this new chapter than if I had I done it any other way。Highly recommend the book。 It's easy to read-- I devoured about 70 pages just the first time I cracked open the book。 The writing flows very smoothly。 It's easy to understand too。 Really, truly a great read! The chapters/advice is brief, thorough, and effective。 He does use a lot of military examples-- it's what he knows! (The military examples apply too!) But there are also corporate examples from his leadership coaching business。 (Echelon Front is the name of the business Jocko and his Seal friend Leif Babin run together。 They do leadership training and events。) 。。。more

Jocko’s insights and experience have been very helpful for me, both as a father of four sons and as someone recently starting a new job。 He inspires a lot of humility and personal responsibility, admitting no room for excuses or blame shifting, and his call to detach and evaluate the circumstance you’re in keeps you on task rather than driven by stress or emotion。

Excellent, albeit repetitive and self promoting。 I listened to this one while waiting for Extreme Ownership。 Fun to listen in Jocko's voice。 Loved the points on having humility in a leadership position, detaching from a stressful situation, don't take criticism personally, iterative decision making (smaller decisions leading to a big one)。 The first half was more full of the good stuff than the second half。 It's easy to apply these lessons to parenthood if you change the word "subordinates" to " Excellent, albeit repetitive and self promoting。 I listened to this one while waiting for Extreme Ownership。 Fun to listen in Jocko's voice。 Loved the points on having humility in a leadership position, detaching from a stressful situation, don't take criticism personally, iterative decision making (smaller decisions leading to a big one)。 The first half was more full of the good stuff than the second half。 It's easy to apply these lessons to parenthood if you change the word "subordinates" to "children。" Loved all of his personal stories。 Will definitely be reading Extreme Ownership。 。。。more

It’s effectively a book of leadership maxims, and I like most maxims by Jocko。 Here are three that have stayed with me:“While there are many similarities between leaders and manipulators, there is one glaring difference: manipulators are trying to get people to do things that will benefit the manipulator, while leaders are trying to get people to do things that will benefit the team and the people themselves。”“There is one type of person who can never become a good leader: a person who lacks hum It’s effectively a book of leadership maxims, and I like most maxims by Jocko。 Here are three that have stayed with me:“While there are many similarities between leaders and manipulators, there is one glaring difference: manipulators are trying to get people to do things that will benefit the manipulator, while leaders are trying to get people to do things that will benefit the team and the people themselves。”“There is one type of person who can never become a good leader: a person who lacks humility。 People who lack humility cannot improve because they don't acknowledge their own weaknesses。 They don't work to improve them, and they won't bring someone onto the team to offset their shortfalls。”“Leadership is not about you。 Not at all。 Leadership is about the team。 The team is more important than you are。 The moment you put your own interests above the team and above the mission is the moment you fail as a leader。” 。。。more

I liked the book, quite a bit actually。 The problem I have with the book is that it’s extremely self-referential and there’s limited actionable advice。 It seems like it was mostly elucidation on his previous books, and because I haven’t read them there was relatively little here。 I think part of the idea was making it easy to remember the advice, and he does succeed there。。。 but some of the points I found myself saying “how does this apply to me?”。 That said, it was enjoyable enough and I agree I liked the book, quite a bit actually。 The problem I have with the book is that it’s extremely self-referential and there’s limited actionable advice。 It seems like it was mostly elucidation on his previous books, and because I haven’t read them there was relatively little here。 I think part of the idea was making it easy to remember the advice, and he does succeed there。。。 but some of the points I found myself saying “how does this apply to me?”。 That said, it was enjoyable enough and I agree with him on many counts。 3。5/5 。。。more

Some sound (if somewhat over-simplified) advice on managing your ego and focusing on the mission。 The author sometimes covers book reviews in his podcast and 2 of my favourite books on leadership (about face & soldier) were recommended to me from there and you can see how they have influenced him here。 Worthwhile but make sure you check out About Face & Soldier
