We largely take a break from the non-stop action to catch up with the political laylines of NJO and it is long missed。 From the return of Ackbar to the reunion of Jacen Solo to the election of Cal Omas and the knighting of the next era of Jedi, Destiny's Way is a focused, engaging read that gives our heroes a major victory that is long overdue。In memoriam: Vergere We largely take a break from the non-stop action to catch up with the political laylines of NJO and it is long missed。 From the return of Ackbar to the reunion of Jacen Solo to the election of Cal Omas and the knighting of the next era of Jedi, Destiny's Way is a focused, engaging read that gives our heroes a major victory that is long overdue。In memoriam: Vergere 。。。more

Given the huge task it faced in following up what I consider to be the best of the NJO so far (Traitor), Destiny's Way held it's own surprisingly well。 Where Traitor was a introspective and consequential commentary on the Force, Destiny's Way returned to more of the narrative focused content that the NJO is known for。 However, Walter Jon Williams was able to continue and in some ways add to the questions Matthew Stover asked in the previous book。 Overall, an enjoyable read that sees a huge swing Given the huge task it faced in following up what I consider to be the best of the NJO so far (Traitor), Destiny's Way held it's own surprisingly well。 Where Traitor was a introspective and consequential commentary on the Force, Destiny's Way returned to more of the narrative focused content that the NJO is known for。 However, Walter Jon Williams was able to continue and in some ways add to the questions Matthew Stover asked in the previous book。 Overall, an enjoyable read that sees a huge swing in momentum for the New Republic in their war against the Yuuzhan Vong。 。。。more

Not Chewie!!! The NJO sounded too depressing, so I decided not to read books in the Star Wars timeline taking place after Timothy Zahn’s Vision of the Future。 I didn’t read any Star Wars books for a few years afterward, until finding some prequel and original trilogy stories that appealed to me。But I’ve read several other books by the author of this one; he’s a talented writer, known for the complexity of his work。 And he’s a local。 I’ve heard good things about this book。 At some point--I don’t know how many years ago--I acquired a used copy。 Being back in a Star Wars phase and open to trying things I’d previously avoided, I decided to finally read this one。There’s enough recap/detail in the narrative that I didn’t feel lost even though I was reading book #14 of a series。Throughout there are some interesting, often cynical observations about politics and governments。 Some of the characters have great conversations about the Jedi Code and what actions reflect the dark side of the Force。 I’ve always thought the Jedi Code was too rigid and should’ve allowed for acknowledgement of feelings like fear and anger。 I loved the bits featuring Talon Karrde and Lando Calrissian。 Talon is my favourite EU character。 Although Leia and Han didn’t get many pages, they’re well-depicted。 Luke has some really good moments。 Jaina is sympathetic and a little heartbreaking, with the burden of responsibility she bears。 Jacen is also sympathetic, but knowing that he goes off the rails later on casts a shadow over everything he does。 Admiral Ackbar has some good scenes。 Mara gets to do some skulking about but isn’t as interesting as she’s been in other stories。 Vergere is creepy and untrustworthy, which augments the sense of tension in the book。The Yuuzhan Vong are nightmarish in every way。 The tech derived from living sources is creative and at times mindblowing。 But one book featuring their cruelty is plenty for me。 。。。more

That's not even true because Jaina and the warmaster didn't have that great of history anyway。 Why even bother with a limp dick approach to a final confrontation with a major villan? Well at least magic force air shields can't hold heat for no evident reason。 It was a good read, but the end really diminished all the good that came before。 。。。more

Fitting to finish this one on May 4th。 It is pretty decent book and it looks like the New Jedi Order series is moving towards a culmination。 I appreciate this one as it combines old and new Star Wars characters。 I’m still not feeling the love for the next generation of characters。

Getting really excited for the last few chapters of the Yuuzhan Vong storyline。 It’s been a wild journey, and this one is setting up things nicely for an intriguing ending。

This book had good plot and a lot of drama, it contained a great amount of questioning what the Jedi truly understand about the force and why they need to learn more, along with the multiple points of view on where to look and how。 9/10

I found thia book a bit boring but still connects a lot of plot lines, essential to completing the reading of this series in my opinion。

Rumor has it when Walter Jon Williams wrote this book, he had never read a single Star Wars novel before, let alone written one。 That unfamiliarity may have been intended to pump some fresh blood into the Expanded Universe, but it seems to backfire a bit, as this installment of the long-running New Jedi Order series suffers from some lapses in continuity and tone。The story here comes immediately after the events in Traitor; Jacen is now back with the New Republic, but people aren't entirely sure Rumor has it when Walter Jon Williams wrote this book, he had never read a single Star Wars novel before, let alone written one。 That unfamiliarity may have been intended to pump some fresh blood into the Expanded Universe, but it seems to backfire a bit, as this installment of the long-running New Jedi Order series suffers from some lapses in continuity and tone。The story here comes immediately after the events in Traitor; Jacen is now back with the New Republic, but people aren't entirely sure what to make of the young man who survived a prolonged period of captivity with the Yuuzhan Vong。 The mysterious alien Vergere, now revealed to be a Jedi Knight from the Days of the Old Republic, believes that Jacen has a very specific destiny, but she will not reveal what that might be。 Meanwhile, Luke and Mara are helping the New Republic government rebuild on Mon Calamari, but are concerned that the new head of state may be unfriendly to Jedi。 Han and Leia have gone off on a mission to the remnant of the Empire, attempting to secure their support in the war against the Yuuuzhan Vong。 And a retired and aging Admiral Ackbar believes that the enemy may be stretched too thin now and a decisive action may well turn the tide of the war。Those are the major plot threads, but they're not the only ones。 There are also assassination attempts, blackmail, political machinations among the Yuuzhan Vong themselves and an attempt to create a doomsday weapon that will annihilate all of the Yuuzhan Vong forever。 It's a lot of plot, but the book is also longer than some of the other entries, weighing in at well over 400 pages。Williams focuses the book on politics and personalities and for the most part that's fine。 But with so much activity, it's hard to know what's important and what's just filler。 By the end, some of the sub-plots appear to be merely setting the stage for future entries, while others evolve into critical and even game-changing moments。 A few of the plot threads show up for a few chapters but then disappear almost as soon as they arrive, a frustrating occurrence。 Some characters seem to have reverted to earlier versions of themselves, inconsistent with the most recent events in the NJO。The best moments in the book probably accrue to Jaina and Vergere near the end of the novel as they engage in some major heroics during the battle of Ebaq-9。 Also, we finally get to meet Supreme Overlord Shimrra, the leader to whom all the Yuuzhan Vong owe allegiance。 There is political unrest and dissension in the Yuuzhan Vong ranks and this presumably sets the stage for the final chapters of the NJO series。I've most enjoyed the NJO books when an author puts a strong focus on one or two storylines or limits the scope of the work to a handful of characters。 This allows the novels to be read as stand-alones, while referencing earlier events in the series and subtly laying the groundwork for things to come。 Williams' approach seems to be to try to progress plot across several different dimensions of the universe and to give all of it nearly equal weight。 I think this is a mistake and it causes the book to read like an awkward middle chapter with too much exposition and not enough of a sense of urgency。 Also, as a novice Star Wars writer, his handling of the characters is a bit clunky compared to some of the veterans。Still, the book is not without its enjoyable moments and two stars might be a little harsh。 I still wish there was a way to give half start ratings on Goodreads, as I'd probably bump this one to two and a half。 Nonetheless, I think it's telling that Williams was never asked to write another Star Wars novel。 。。。more

Being this my blog, I guess I don’t need permission, so… rant it is!! My love for Star Wars started a long time ago in a very close place: the cinema next to my home。 About 15 years ago, I started reading books and comics of this huge Universe。 I didn’t know a word in English back then, so I had to wait for the Spanish translation。 Even though I learned English (I get by at least), I kept buying Star Wars books in Spanish to support the awesome publisher called Alberto Santos。 They made a great effort to bring us many Star Wars books in the best quality possible。 For reasons unknown, they lost the rights to publish those books。 Planeta DeAgostini (a huge publisher) got them and started publishing them thorugh their Timun Mas editorial。 The nightmare began。Albert Santos only could publish four or five books of The New Jedi Order saga before losing the rights。 Planeta DeAgostini, instead of releasing the rest in bookshops, thought it would be “funnier” to publish the rest as a weekly kiosk collection… I got a few, but I missed most of them。 The service to get back issues was crap :(。 I cried a little bit。 I love The New Jedi Order books so much!! I wanted them in Spanish so my brother could read them, too。 I felt backstabbed, but I put my faith on the new releases by Timun Mas。 BIIIIIIG mistake!! The quality of the books was shameful。 Horrible translations。 Grammatical mistakes in every single page。 I even have a book where, during a whole chapter, Padme is treated as a man and Palpatine as a woman… They killed this collector of Star Wars books in Spanish。 That moment is when I decided to read them in English and ignore Timun Mas’ shenanigans。Buuut Disney bought Star Wars and took the decision to put the whole Expanded Universe in a Legacy box and make it non-official。 I know I shouldn’t, but I felt cheated。 It’s a pretty clever move to give them some freedom and the books are still there, but I felt I was loving a Star Wars of a parallel universe and my interest for the Star Wars books (old and new) decreased to almost nothing。 I need to get my mojo back, and what better than the New Jedi Order to achieve that? I have yet several books to read to know how they defeat the Yuuzhan Vong (if they defeat them!!)。This books tells the next step of the war against the Yuuzhan Vong。 Jacen and Vergere have escaped, Jaina is leaving behind her dark moments and the New Republic is about to build a new government in Mon Calamari。 In that planet, the former Admiral Ackbar comes with a plan to defeat the Yuuzhan Vong once and for all。 Or at least to put a big dent in their military resources。 That plan need a bait: Jaina。 She doesn’t know that part of the plan, by the way。 Everything is being kept very secret。I won’t spoil the end of the battle, but I must say this is maybe the happiest book so far。 There are not big deaths that make you cry for days as in previous books。 The list of casualties is so long… I can barely keep track of all the awesome characters that have met they end during this conflict。This book has a bit of everything。 The worst are all the space battles before the big one。 All those fights against the Yuuzhan Vong feel the same。 The New Republic doesn’t have many tactics to avoid the dovin basals of the enemy, so the description of them is rather repetitive。 That’s not the fault of the writer。 It has been like that for several books already。 I enjoyed the most the political part, even though our beloved heroes have some behaviours that make me a bit angry。 The blackmail to influence the election results… That is going to come back viciously!!I have to confess that I kind of hate Luke in this book。 The way he moves his former students as if they were mere chess pieces… Man, that’s cold。 Jaina and Jacen are family!!! And the words he says to Jaina during the Jedi graduation… I was speechless。 I wanted to punch him so hard!!! He has to be extra-nice in the next books if he wants my forgiveness!!I’m also a bit scared with myself。 I didn’t dislike the Alpha Red solution and I know I should。 The Yuuzhan have brought so much pain to the galaxy that my empathy for them is non-existent。I’ll keep reading this saga, because I need to know how they defeat the Yuuzhan Vong。 I don’t know if I will read more books of the Legacy box after the New Jedi Order。 It will all depend on the reanimation of my inner Star Wars fanboy。 。。。more

This is another entry that pits the heroes we love against the Vong in a war that spans galaxies。 This is not considered canon anymore as it is now part of the Legends timeline。 In this one, we get three different plot stories。 Jacen is returning home, the New Republic needs to establish some form of government, and there is a plan to take the offensive against the Vong。This book was a nice, pleasant surprise as I had no experience with this author and I was a little surprised he authored a book This is another entry that pits the heroes we love against the Vong in a war that spans galaxies。 This is not considered canon anymore as it is now part of the Legends timeline。 In this one, we get three different plot stories。 Jacen is returning home, the New Republic needs to establish some form of government, and there is a plan to take the offensive against the Vong。This book was a nice, pleasant surprise as I had no experience with this author and I was a little surprised he authored a book this far into a series。 The author did an excellent job。 I was most impressed by how he balanced the three stories and all the characters。 He touched upon everyone including Lando and gave us a nice peek into the Vong religion。 This author understands Star Wars。 He advanced the plot and at the same time he answered questions that fans might have been wondering about。 There were several highlights to this book including the final battle scene, a conversation between characters about the force, and Mara Jade with an underwater incident。I enjoyed the direction the author went with this story as it looks like we are in the final turn of this long series。 This was my introduction to this author and I would definitely read more of his offerings as he seemed to be able to connect with the reader。 。。。more

There were certainly parts where the writing dragged, however the narrative has slowly gotten to be more fulfilling with each book in the second half of this series。 Probably due in large part to what happens with a lot of longer series: the beginning requires places seeds and setting things up, which are now being resolved and concluded。 All in all, one of the better ones of the series。
