Summary

Once upon a time。。。

In a land far away, there were two kingdoms: the Outside, where twisted beasts roamed that could curse with a touch, and the Inside, where humans lived in safety and peace。 The girl and the beast should never have met, but when they do, a quiet fairytale begins。

This is a story of two people--one human, one inhuman--who linger in the hazy twilight that separates night from day。

Das Ende war dann doch recht spannend und ich würde schon weiterlesen (hallo Cliffhanger。。。), aber noch ist mir zu wenig passiert。

i could hear the wonderful dialogue clearly while i read, the little girls authenticity was adorable and enchanting at the same time and the outsider is so wholesome。 not only is there wholesome filler that doesn’t get boring even as they do simple tasks like laundry, but the conflict and darkness in the story really brings everything together。 will be buying volume 2 immediately!

This was a captivating read。 It had the right mix of suspense and cuteness to sustain interest。 It leaned more on the art and was refreshingly less on the dialogue side。 The speech bubbles on numerous panels were a bit jumbled up; dialogue delivered by one character being placed on that of another, a confusion which might have risen out of translation。 Will definitely read on!

I don’t usually read mangas。 I mean, I am not a manga fan。 But this one caught my eyes。 A first tome intriguing。 I’ll keep going, I want to understand this strange story between a little girl named Sheeva and a kind of non-human being named "Professor" who is taking care of her。 Reminds me a lot of "Over the garden wall" but darker。Je ne lis pas souvent des mangas。 En vrai, j’aime pas trop ça en fait。 Mais celui-ci me faisait vraiment de l’œil。 C’est un premier tome intrigant。 Je vais continuer I don’t usually read mangas。 I mean, I am not a manga fan。 But this one caught my eyes。 A first tome intriguing。 I’ll keep going, I want to understand this strange story between a little girl named Sheeva and a kind of non-human being named "Professor" who is taking care of her。 Reminds me a lot of "Over the garden wall" but darker。Je ne lis pas souvent des mangas。 En vrai, j’aime pas trop ça en fait。 Mais celui-ci me faisait vraiment de l’œil。 C’est un premier tome intrigant。 Je vais continuer juste pour essayer de comprendre cette étrange fable racontant l’histoire d’une petite fille nommée Sheeva et une sorte d’être « non-humain » que la petite appelle « Professeur » et qui prend soin d’elle。 Ça me rappelle énormément la mini-série « La Forêt de l’étrange » mais en plus sombre。 。。。more

Nargh! Why does it end on a cliffhanger?! :)I’m not a graphic novel or manga reader but I saw this one on sale and the art on the cover intrigued me。 And the art IS stunning throughout! I’m a big fan of dark fairytales – anything that mixes the whimsical with the creepy and obscure – so of course I was very excited to read this when I heard about it。 Firstly, the art is very beautiful and unique, and I love the smart but subtle ways composition was used。 The character design is very distinctive too: you can immediately get a feel for who Sensei and Shiva are, just by the way they look and move。 The story is interesting and hints at a deeper worldbuilding, and I was instantly ch I’m a big fan of dark fairytales – anything that mixes the whimsical with the creepy and obscure – so of course I was very excited to read this when I heard about it。 Firstly, the art is very beautiful and unique, and I love the smart but subtle ways composition was used。 The character design is very distinctive too: you can immediately get a feel for who Sensei and Shiva are, just by the way they look and move。 The story is interesting and hints at a deeper worldbuilding, and I was instantly charmed by the relationship between the two main characters。 The only point I have with this is that it seemed both too slow and like it ended too soon。 Nevertheless, I liked it, and I’ll be definitely reading the next ones! 。。。more

Now that I’ve read this one, I need to find out what happens next to this little girl who falls asleep on tree stumps and her teacher。 Hopefully they can avoid the soldiers with arrows。 And love the umbrella with a hole as a means of connection。

This was a heartwarming fairytale about a young girl named Shiva, and her mysterious horned caretaker named “Teacher”。 The first book acts as an introduction to the world made up of insiders — humans living inside the walled kingdom — and outsiders — dark humanoid monsters that have been banished outside the kingdom walls。 Nagabe's illustrations have a beautiful haunting quality to them and create an atmosphere that instantly draws the reader in。 I really enjoyed this first book and I look forwa This was a heartwarming fairytale about a young girl named Shiva, and her mysterious horned caretaker named “Teacher”。 The first book acts as an introduction to the world made up of insiders — humans living inside the walled kingdom — and outsiders — dark humanoid monsters that have been banished outside the kingdom walls。 Nagabe's illustrations have a beautiful haunting quality to them and create an atmosphere that instantly draws the reader in。 I really enjoyed this first book and I look forward to reading the rest of the series! 。。。more

Am I finally getting to all the mangas I borrowed from the library? Yeah。 The art style is very beautiful, fits really well to the story and I finished it in less than 30min。 It was clearly a first installment of a series。 Everything was a world setup so i didnt really get close to the characters (yet)。 The creepiness level was just enough for me (especially the ending)。 I was torn between 3* and 4* but eventually decided on 4* cause it definitely deserves it。

I loved everything about this。 Just the perfect combination of wholesome and spooky。 Such beautiful artwork, big on atmosphere。 and the characters, world and story were all interesting。

This was equally wholesome and spooky, but that ending took it to a whole other level!

A monster assumes guardianship of a small human girl。A monster, known as "Teacher," has taken in a young human girl named Shiva。 Because Shiva was suspected of being "cursed" and, thus, sentenced to death, her human caretaker left her in the woods outside the wall with a note pleading Please help, kind person。 Please take care of my child。 She was discovered by Teacher who, despite being an Outsider, took her home and became her guardian。 Not wanting to distress the child, Teacher leads Shiva to A monster assumes guardianship of a small human girl。A monster, known as "Teacher," has taken in a young human girl named Shiva。 Because Shiva was suspected of being "cursed" and, thus, sentenced to death, her human caretaker left her in the woods outside the wall with a note pleading Please help, kind person。 Please take care of my child。 She was discovered by Teacher who, despite being an Outsider, took her home and became her guardian。 Not wanting to distress the child, Teacher leads Shiva to believe that it is only a matter of time before her aunt will return to take her home。 As a result, Shiva places herself in danger by wandering off in anticipation of her aunt’s arrival。 This story begins in medias res。 It is set in a world with two kingdoms, the kingdom Outside and a the kingdom inside, divided by a wall。 Those living outside are Outsiders, cursed monsters, and those living inside are Insiders, ordinary humans。 The curse is transmitted by touch, and if an Outsider touches a person, that person will also transform into a monster 。。。 or so it is believed。 The story ends on a cliffhanger when (view spoiler)[one night another Outsider enters the house that Teacher and Shiva share and touches the Shiva。 (Obvious moral: Lock your doors。) Shiva has been dreaming that her hand was a claw。 Now will she transform into a monster? Is she immune? Will Teacher find an antidote? Is the curse even real? Stayed tuned to find out。 (hide spoiler)]The English edition of the book is read back to front, the panels on each page read up to down, and the speech bubbles read right to left。 Sometimes it is difficult to tell which speech bubble belongs to which character because of their shape and placement and because Teacher and Shiva share the same font。 What really stands out in this series is the loving relationship between Shiva and Teacher, and the author-illustrator does an amazing job of capturing their quiet everyday intimacy as well as their devotion to one another。 The fact that they cannot touch for fear of spreading contagion creates an interesting tension within their interactions。I picked up this book because of the striking illustrations。 Shiva looks like a typical manga style character, Teacher is dressed in a vaguely 18th British style, which reminded me of Benjamin Franklin, and the Insiders look like generically medieval Western Europeans。There are little quirks within the story like Shiva using an umbrella despite the ye old-fashioned setting。 Since this is my first foray into manga, I'm not sure if the lack of consistency is typical or not。 Not being bound by any timeline does free things up in surprising and unexpected ways。The story contains many of the standard modern fairy tale tropes。 The "monster" has a greater humanity than the humans。 The lackeys question the ends justify the means policy of those in power。 The wall built to keep the bad guys out does not keep the bad guys out。 The witch-hunts instituted by Spanish Inquisition / Soviet KGB -like organizations always gets out of hand。 。。。more

I knew this manga was going to be one of my favorites within just the first few pages。 Oh my gosh do I love this。 Not only is the art beautiful, the story is as well。 The stark comparison of black and white characters is used often, but rarely is it executed quite so well。 The character cloaked in black is "bad"。 One of the outsiders。 A Monster。 The girl in all white is pure innocence。 But who is really good and who is bad? Interesting。。。。 so little was explained。 The writing is very basic。 Probably a bi-product of it being translated。 The art is kind of hard to interpret at times。 There wasn’t much going on。 Curious at where this would be going。。。 aka is it worth it。

Un inizio davvero molto intrigante。 Un po’ misteri, un po’ slice of life, un po’ mai una gioia, un po’ love love。 Finale con cliffhanger estremo - non vedo l’ora di leggere il prossimo。
