Simple clear, and child-friendly illustrations tell facts and a few folktales about bees。 The narrator Buzzwing the honey bees invites reader's to look for hidden animals on most of the two page spreads, which is a clever way to encourage reader's to examine the illustrations more closely。 Just a couple of quibbles, though。 Some animals animals we are asked to look for have proper names, such asare Whisker Mouse and Lacey Ladybird, but the rest of the animals to look for don't have proper names。 Simple clear, and child-friendly illustrations tell facts and a few folktales about bees。 The narrator Buzzwing the honey bees invites reader's to look for hidden animals on most of the two page spreads, which is a clever way to encourage reader's to examine the illustrations more closely。 Just a couple of quibbles, though。 Some animals animals we are asked to look for have proper names, such asare Whisker Mouse and Lacey Ladybird, but the rest of the animals to look for don't have proper names。 I didn't like this inconsistency。 Another botheration for me is that the ladybugs are called ladybirds。 Forgive my ignorance, but I've never heard of them referred to as ladybirds。 I spent a great deal of time looking for three birds, and there are three hens on the page。 I finally gave up and googled it。 。。。more

In The Secret Life of Bees, an absolutely adorable bee with a bowtie named Buzzwing gives a tour of his life including his life cycle, anatomy, stories from around the world, how honey is made, and how beekeepers do their work。 The illustrations are super cute and each topic is short with only a couple pages, so it can be read in pieces。 This book was very informative for how short it was。 For example, I, a 27 year old who pays taxes, did not know that bees don’t actually buzz - it’s just the so In The Secret Life of Bees, an absolutely adorable bee with a bowtie named Buzzwing gives a tour of his life including his life cycle, anatomy, stories from around the world, how honey is made, and how beekeepers do their work。 The illustrations are super cute and each topic is short with only a couple pages, so it can be read in pieces。 This book was very informative for how short it was。 For example, I, a 27 year old who pays taxes, did not know that bees don’t actually buzz - it’s just the sound of the air being vibrated by their wings! I don't love this book, even though the cover is certainly inviting and it has all the elements of a successful children's book about bees。 My main complaints are: (1) I feel this book is trying to do too much, and (2) I'm not exactly sure what age range this is for。 I have the exact same issues with The Secret Life of Trees: Explore the Forests of the World, With Oakheart the Brave by the same author/publisher。This book is FULL of text--you follow a character Buzzwing the Bee throughout the boo I don't love this book, even though the cover is certainly inviting and it has all the elements of a successful children's book about bees。 My main complaints are: (1) I feel this book is trying to do too much, and (2) I'm not exactly sure what age range this is for。 I have the exact same issues with The Secret Life of Trees: Explore the Forests of the World, With Oakheart the Brave by the same author/publisher。This book is FULL of text--you follow a character Buzzwing the Bee throughout the book, learning all sorts of great nonfiction information about bees--information kids will enjoy learning。 However, this information is spread throughout the pages in as many as 12 separate paragraphs throughout the page spread。 Also, interspersed with the nonfiction information are folktales about bees, poems, and other narrative asides。 It's jam-packed! And while I honestly love folktales from around the world, I wonder if this book would be better served by having a more focused approach and leave that out? I have a hard time comprehending how a child is supposed to consume all of the information and narratives in this book。 It's a lot! With that, again, I am unsure as to what age this is for。 The publisher indicates ages 7-11 or Grade Level 2-6。 The younger end of that spectrum will never get through this whole book。 It's too much。 The older end of that spectrum I think will be under served by the fact that the illustration style is cutesy and anthropomorphic。 Children in this age group I think would better learn nonfiction scientific information about bees more realistic illustrations of bee types, bee anatomy, bee hives, and so on。 That said, I'm not totally opposed to using a more animated style --- The Bee Book and Bees: A Honeyed History do this well。 Maybe it's that both of those books are focused and well-organized and clear in their presentation of the nonfiction material that I find those both to be WAY more appealing than this。 I wonder if this book would have been better served by *either* being a narrative style fiction book with Buzzwing the Bee OR by skipping all that and just being a nonfiction book?***Note: I was given a review copy of this book by Quarto Kids。 Opinions are my own。 。。。more

Such a cute book about bees! It's a little long for my babies at this time but we'll definitely revisit it in the future。 One thing that stood out the most to me besides the beautiful illustrations was the diversity in the characters throughout the book。 That is something I really look for when selecting books for my children to read。 Such a cute book about bees! We did a bee unit in our homeschool before COVID, including visiting a local beekeeper, and it was one of my favorite things we studied (even though I’m terrified of real bees!) and this was a nice refresher。 I liked the illustrations, and the “find X on this page” I also really liked the bee themed mythology。
