A funny, fascinating graphic novel about the life of a bee named Nyuki。 Lots to learn---in a fun and engaging way。

I'm not really a big fan of graphic novels, but this one I found to be very informational。 It just so happens that our summer reading kids were learning about honeybees this week and everything the "bee lady" told them was in this book! I actually learned quite a bit from reading this interesting story。 I would recommend it to any kids who want to learn about bees! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ My 10 year old put this graphic novel in my hands。 He has had a fear of bees for a long time abs credits this book with helping to ease his fears。 It was informative, witty, and endearing。 The end notes includes great insights about the creative process of making the book。

A few black backgrounds have been swapped out for those of a lighter color, several frame boxes have been removed to make the page appear lighter, and several detail lines have been added in places to give depth and clarity。 The addition of color to all illustrations (largely yellows, golds, and browns within the hive and a wider color palette for the outside world) makes this a visual joy to pour over。 Libraries with Clan Apis will want to update their collections with this revised gem。 Use this with Candace Fleming's Honeybee: The Busy Life of Apis Mellifera (Neal Porter Books 2020) to add differentiation in a unit on honeybees or plant pollination。 。。。more

As Nyuki grows up, she finds a special flower with the best nectar and helps cross-pollinate it with a flower across the field。 Nyuki inspires a younger forager, Melissa, to become a great forager for the colony。To begin, I don’t like bees。 I enjoy what bees do and appreciate that we wouldn’t be able to eat without them。 However, they scare me despite constant reminders that they aren’t out to sting me。 That being said, I found myself thoroughly enjoying this story。 This was a wonderful graphic novel with a lot of hidden science facts。 I learned so much about the evolution of a bee and the life of a colony, and the many predators who are out to make a bee into a snack。 There were some really emotional moments as well, despite it being a story that young readers would enjoy。 The author was successful in getting me to care about Dvorah and Nyuki, and a little bit Melissa, so their story was touching。 The first chapter of this review copy was in color, and it was absolutely stunning。 I missed the color initially when the illustrations were just black and white, but within a few pages, I didn’t miss the colors and I enjoyed the illustrations for the details, different line weights, and beautiful expression of the world of these bees。Sara’s Rating: 9/10Suitability Level: Grades 4-8 。。。more

This book is absolutely delightful! Is kind of fiction — a story told from the point of view of a worker bee。 It’s also a explanation of the lifecycle of bees。 It’s funny, charming, and informative。

Following the life of a honey bee from birth to death, the reader reader learns a lot about the life of bees and hives, ecosystems, plants, and other insects。 The little bee Nyuki, with her never ending questions, loud mouth and smart attitude will appeal to young readers as well as being an excellent way to learn along the way as we follow her around the hive。My only quibble is I feel the fact it is black and white takes away from getting a full sense of the landscape and structure。

Very clever。 Excellent art。 The panels are clear and easy to read, the colors are perfect, and the layout and overall design are beautiful。 The main character can be a little bit much, but the other bees think so, too, so that's part of her whole "bit" - what makes her, her。I love the information。 The origin story in particular was such a wonderful way to start。 Any science-minded kid who's ever heard of the Big Bang is going to understand what's going on there and is going to appreciate that in Very clever。 Excellent art。 The panels are clear and easy to read, the colors are perfect, and the layout and overall design are beautiful。 The main character can be a little bit much, but the other bees think so, too, so that's part of her whole "bit" - what makes her, her。I love the information。 The origin story in particular was such a wonderful way to start。 Any science-minded kid who's ever heard of the Big Bang is going to understand what's going on there and is going to appreciate that intro。 At least, this adult did, for sure。Also: the backmatter is A+ stuff。 That's what backmatter should be。 Really breaks down the information about what the different parts of the bee do, and how the hive works, and so much more。 It's wonderful。Vivid, informative, entertaining, and effective。 Very nice。 。。。more

I missed Clan Apis before it was out of print。 This is a revised reprint, but how much has been changed I don't know, not having seen the original。 I've enjoyed other books by Jay Hosler and knew I would like this one。 It is a full-color graphic novel -- some of the ARCs must have been black and white, as earlier reviewers mentioned that。 Opens with a beautiful metaphor for the Big Bang Theory (The Big Bloom Theory) and a synopsis of evolution as a bedtime story for a bee larva。 Perfect blend of I missed Clan Apis before it was out of print。 This is a revised reprint, but how much has been changed I don't know, not having seen the original。 I've enjoyed other books by Jay Hosler and knew I would like this one。 It is a full-color graphic novel -- some of the ARCs must have been black and white, as earlier reviewers mentioned that。 Opens with a beautiful metaphor for the Big Bang Theory (The Big Bloom Theory) and a synopsis of evolution as a bedtime story for a bee larva。 Perfect blend of education and humor。 If you are remotely interested in the life cycle of a honey bee, this might be the book to get you hooked。 Hope this finds its way into many young biology classrooms and homes of curious kids (back cover suggested ages 8-12)。 。。。more
