This book was a very interesting book。 It’s a true story so it made it even that much more interesting。 It is a beautiful story about a girl who doesn’t speak until she goes to a secret school。 I think this shows that kids sometimes like to close in their emotions and not share them with others and just go in their little shell。 It takes just one person to say something nice to them to help them express their emotions and open up again。 Hopefully if kids read this it teaches them to be greatful This book was a very interesting book。 It’s a true story so it made it even that much more interesting。 It is a beautiful story about a girl who doesn’t speak until she goes to a secret school。 I think this shows that kids sometimes like to close in their emotions and not share them with others and just go in their little shell。 It takes just one person to say something nice to them to help them express their emotions and open up again。 Hopefully if kids read this it teaches them to be greatful for what they have but also check up on each other and talk and be nice to their classmates even if they don’t know them that well。 A small act of kindness can go a long way。 。。。more

I found this book very inspiring and sad, but beautiful and hopeful。 If I had children, this would be one I would definitely re - read time and time again to show how education is a privilege that some seldom get, to explore trauma, and to show the power of knowledge and love。 I just absolutely loved this to pieces and I want to read many more of Jeanette Winters’ books!

This book was banned for "Religious Viewpoint, Unsuited to age group, and Violence", reasons which are terribly hypocritical。 This is a sad but ultimately hopeful and inspiring story。 It is based on the true story of a girl in Afghanistan who did not speak for several months after her parents disappeared from her life, and came to find healing and community in her secret school。 This book was banned for "Religious Viewpoint, Unsuited to age group, and Violence", reasons which are terribly hypocritical。 This is a sad but ultimately hopeful and inspiring story。 It is based on the true story of a girl in Afghanistan who did not speak for several months after her parents disappeared from her life, and came to find healing and community in her secret school。 。。。more

4。5 A touching book about a grandmother's love and the power and importance of education。 The introduction of women's rights before the Taliban make the reader realize how quickly assumed rights can be taken away。 This would be a great gift。 4。5 A touching book about a grandmother's love and the power and importance of education。 The introduction of women's rights before the Taliban make the reader realize how quickly assumed rights can be taken away。 This would be a great gift。 。。。more

This is an excellent, inspiring book about the value of education and the courage that exists in families and in communities。 It feels all the more relevant in Summer 2020 when it is harder than ever for students to go to school。The simple text and evocative illustrations make the simple, often repeated messages stand out and feel fresh。I am shocked to learn that this book is controversial。 It was #9 on ALA's banned/challenged list in 2015 for violence and religious viewpoint。 I'm not going to w This is an excellent, inspiring book about the value of education and the courage that exists in families and in communities。 It feels all the more relevant in Summer 2020 when it is harder than ever for students to go to school。The simple text and evocative illustrations make the simple, often repeated messages stand out and feel fresh。I am shocked to learn that this book is controversial。 It was #9 on ALA's banned/challenged list in 2015 for violence and religious viewpoint。 I'm not going to waste my time explaining how wrong that is。 It's wrong and you should go read this great book。 Appropriate for Pre-K and up。 。。。more

Nasreen’s Secret School is a wonderful children’s informational text that shows the reader the realities of living under Taliban control as an Afghani woman。 Though women were not allowed the right to education, many saw the importance of education and pursued academics in secret, with great risk to their own personal safety。 This book was a wow book for me because of the beautiful artwork, the author’s storytelling ability, and the courageous story of young women risking it all to pursue educat Nasreen’s Secret School is a wonderful children’s informational text that shows the reader the realities of living under Taliban control as an Afghani woman。 Though women were not allowed the right to education, many saw the importance of education and pursued academics in secret, with great risk to their own personal safety。 This book was a wow book for me because of the beautiful artwork, the author’s storytelling ability, and the courageous story of young women risking it all to pursue education。 I would recommend this book to 2nd-3rd graders。 Educators could use this book to show children that while education is a right in America, it is a privilege in many parts of the world (especially for women)。 This book is also filled with many digraphs and blends, so if the students needed practice with blends, there are many words in this book that could be used to help the students master these skills。 。。。more

When Nasreen’s world is upended by the Taliban and her parents disappear, school becomes a refuge that restores Nasreen’s hope。 This is a gentle introduction to a tough subject and can serve as an opening for conversations about how education may not be equally accessible to children around the world (among other topics)。 I think children will appreciate the brightly colored illustrations of Nasreen's home in Herat, Afghanistan。 When Nasreen’s world is upended by the Taliban and her parents disappear, school becomes a refuge that restores Nasreen’s hope。 This is a gentle introduction to a tough subject and can serve as an opening for conversations about how education may not be equally accessible to children around the world (among other topics)。 I think children will appreciate the brightly colored illustrations of Nasreen's home in Herat, Afghanistan。 。。。more

Nasreen's Secret School is an almost heartwarming story of a young girl in Taliban controlled Afghanistan。 I say almost heartwarming because it doesn't have the happiest ending; however, it does not detract from the story at all。 In fact, it adds to the quality of the story because it's a common occurrence for families in Afghanistan to have a family member taken away and to remove it would only half tell the story。 I enjoyed that it was told from the perspective of Nasreen's grandmother。 She pr Nasreen's Secret School is an almost heartwarming story of a young girl in Taliban controlled Afghanistan。 I say almost heartwarming because it doesn't have the happiest ending; however, it does not detract from the story at all。 In fact, it adds to the quality of the story because it's a common occurrence for families in Afghanistan to have a family member taken away and to remove it would only half tell the story。 I enjoyed that it was told from the perspective of Nasreen's grandmother。 She provides a distinction between pre-Taliban Afghanistan and Taliban controlled Afghanistan where previously, girls were allowed to read and learn and the hijab wasn't worn as much, compared to now where girls are not allowed to attend schools and the hijab is not technically mandatory but there's pressure to wear it。 The story is a wonderful way to introduce the everyday heroes and survivors and their resilience through war to children。 It also can serve as a female empowerment story because it's common women defying the orders of the Taliban to hopefully save the country one day。 。。。more

Living through difficult times in Afghanistan, Nasreen hasn't spoke since the last time she saw her parents。 Although educating girls was not acceptable, Nasreen's grandmother enrolls her in a secret school for girls。 It is here that Nasreen creates friendships and breaks her silence。 This is great text to use as a read aloud when teaching about different cultures。 It can be used for students to make predictions, as well different types of connections。 Living through difficult times in Afghanistan, Nasreen hasn't spoke since the last time she saw her parents。 Although educating girls was not acceptable, Nasreen's grandmother enrolls her in a secret school for girls。 It is here that Nasreen creates friendships and breaks her silence。 This is great text to use as a read aloud when teaching about different cultures。 It can be used for students to make predictions, as well different types of connections。 。。。more
