Summary

Together with inker Klaus Janson and colorist Lynn Varley, writer/artist Frank Miller completely reinvents the legend of Batman in his saga of a near-future Gotham City gone to rot, ten years after the Dark Knight's retirement。 This masterpiece of modern comics storytelling, Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, brings to vivid life a dark world and an even darker man。

The Dark Knight returns in a blaze of fury, taking on a whole new generation of criminals and matching their level of violence。 He is soon joined by a new Robin--a girl named Carrie Kelley, who proves to be just as invaluable as her predecessors。

But can Batman and Robin deal with the threat posed by their deadliest enemies, after years of incarceration have made them into perfect psychopaths? And more important, can anyone survive the coming fallout from an undeclared war between the superpowers -- or the clash of what were once the world's greatest heroes?

Celebrate thirty years of one of the most influential stories ever told in the comics medium with the undisputed classic Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, now with a new cover and introduction。

Not a big Batman guy, but have a soft spot for grizzled old badasses。 Enjoyed most of the story, had just a few moments that felt like material was cut out or forcefully condensed。 The art was either phenomenal or eh, little in between。 I really enjoyed this Bruce Wayne's character development。 It was odd to have an old superhero that is traditionally considered one of the most intelligent "brains over brawn" style heros go the flipside and turn more fisticuffs in old age, but I liked the novelt Not a big Batman guy, but have a soft spot for grizzled old badasses。 Enjoyed most of the story, had just a few moments that felt like material was cut out or forcefully condensed。 The art was either phenomenal or eh, little in between。 I really enjoyed this Bruce Wayne's character development。 It was odd to have an old superhero that is traditionally considered one of the most intelligent "brains over brawn" style heros go the flipside and turn more fisticuffs in old age, but I liked the novelty of it。 7/10 。。。more

I read this, well, when it came out。 It blew me away, then, and holds up even now。 One of the things I find very telling about this narrative is that essentially Miller revived Batman -- who has had so many lives anyway -- and its his version that in essence has been the core of everything done with him since。 AND, virtually all the Batman movies since then have subtly or not-so-subtly ripped off Miller's narratives in their plots (I could list a bunch of them, but just for one example, the rece I read this, well, when it came out。 It blew me away, then, and holds up even now。 One of the things I find very telling about this narrative is that essentially Miller revived Batman -- who has had so many lives anyway -- and its his version that in essence has been the core of everything done with him since。 AND, virtually all the Batman movies since then have subtly or not-so-subtly ripped off Miller's narratives in their plots (I could list a bunch of them, but just for one example, the recent Joker movie owes its talk-show scene to this book, even if it revamped it enough to avoid a too-obvious link)。 Anyway, I digress。 A great, groundbreaking book。 。。。more

I hadn't read a Batman comic for a while but picked up this one after reading rave reviews。 It lived up to my expectations, the story is great and I have always enjoyed the darker interpretations of the caped crusader。 This book is a compilation and works really well at that as provides a nice complete story。 I hadn't read a Batman comic for a while but picked up this one after reading rave reviews。 It lived up to my expectations, the story is great and I have always enjoyed the darker interpretations of the caped crusader。 This book is a compilation and works really well at that as provides a nice complete story。 。。。more

Hands down the best standalone Batman story ever written。 The more times I read this as I get older, the better and more nuanced it gets。

Game changing modern classic Batman comic from the eighties。 What can I say。 I didn’t like the talking TV-heads and the art。 I liked the grittiness, Batman’s age and how Superman and Ronald Reagan were portrayed。

I was not crazy about the editing of this book。 I hated that the story was constantly interrupted with stupid news interviews of random people。 It broke up the rhythm of the story。 They couldn't finish a coherent thought and jumped around between characters' inner monologs that went nowhere。 And why was that little girl worthy enough to be Robin? Because she learned some stuff in the Girl Scouts? The artwork was atrocious。 That was the hardest part about getting through this。 You shouldn't have I was not crazy about the editing of this book。 I hated that the story was constantly interrupted with stupid news interviews of random people。 It broke up the rhythm of the story。 They couldn't finish a coherent thought and jumped around between characters' inner monologs that went nowhere。 And why was that little girl worthy enough to be Robin? With each re-read after I pick up any work Frank Miller wrote after 1990, and maybe some sin city stuff, the instances of Frank Miller’s mental degradation become distinctly evident through each subsequent review。。Adding to the discourse, I want to preface this by saying the Dark Knight Returns is an excellent addition to the Batman mythos, but not a good starting point。 There are hints of major events in the Batman mythos everywhere, so if you really want to enjoy this novel, I recommend starti With each re-read after I pick up any work Frank Miller wrote after 1990, and maybe some sin city stuff, the instances of Frank Miller’s mental degradation become distinctly evident through each subsequent review。。Adding to the discourse, I want to preface this by saying the Dark Knight Returns is an excellent addition to the Batman mythos, but not a good starting point。 There are hints of major events in the Batman mythos everywhere, so if you really want to enjoy this novel, I recommend starting with Batman Year 1, the Long Halloween, or even the very first 1940s comic。 But it's a book I would hesitant to suggest based on the author's history。。I sometimes struggle to read this graphic novel only because of DC and Frank Miller’s continued works over 30 years later after TDKR。 It’s the only reason I can’t rate this novel 5 stars。 As mentioned in other reviews, it’s hard not to think of the impact TDKR had on the American comic book industry, injecting dramatic personae into the comic book superheroes, alongside works such as Watchman。 Where once Batman was a brightly colored buddy cop like superhero or a campy superhero like the Adam West Batman in the 60s, he is in TDKR a superhero coming out of retirement to fulfill a self-proclaimed duty of criminal justice that makes a mockery of the United States forces, prompting a showdown against American Allied Superman at the end。 。Critical re-evaluation of Miller, however。 makes it difficult to read his works without the fascist overtones。 What makes The Dark Knight Returns so magnificent is that it plays to Miller’s strength of ambiguity in both his artistic style and writing。 One can read The Dark Knight Returns in so many ways; in one scene Batman fights against a recovered Harvey Dent returns to his criminal 2-face persona and pulls him off a helicopter, but it’s left ambiguous if Dent fell on his accord or was attempting suicide。 In another scene in chapter 2, Batman stops a hostage situation by firing a machine gun, but it is ambiguous if he killed the captor。 But you can’t Batman is violent for sure, and he knows how to hurt people, get them to talk。 In a gentler reading, Batman does what is right in his fight to stop the immediate threat of crime, stopping hostage situation, controlling mobs, and fighting terrorists, even if it acts in extra-legal ways。 But by acting in authoritarian ways for forcibly suppression opposition, Batman acts in fascist manners with the allure that he is right and moral, and the regimentation of society is not functional, and he would be best left in charge。 。Sure, this reading may act outside the confines of what exists in this body of work, but when Frank Miller kept doing this in All-Star Batman and Robin, his adaptation of The Spirit, Sin City, and without any restraints in the unholy mess that is Holy Terror, it’s difficult not to read Miller’s work as fascist despite its ambiguity。 His recent political writings are a paranoid right-wing mess, and it’s a shame that Frank Miller, who would probably be viewed with an open mind in the 80s when this was published, has twisted his vision into right-ring nonsense where might is right。 。Separate from Miller’s other works, this graphic novel is fantastic。 Characters engage in a stream of consciousness-like dialogue that engages the viewers in writing that at times feels schizophrenic。 Characters are written in shorthand, so you can’t expect to engage in their backstories, but also help amp up the high intensity action sequences that ensue。 Death of the author is a very important subject in critical reading, separating the art from the artist, but is limited when authorial intent and direction is so influenced by the author’s continued works, especially ones who are living。 By all means read this graphic novel to understand the impact it had on 80s comics and even today, read it for an amazing superhero story filled with action and drama, but you’re off stopping there and moving to something different if you think Miller made anything better after the 90s。 。。。more

Ego is destructive。I'm not a big graphic novel reader (I've read a lot of major mainstream stuff, LOVE Ascender and East of West) and I'm definitely no Batman aficionado so I came in with fresh and clueless eyes。 Needless to say, The Dark Knight Returns is completely awesome。 The art, the dialogue and the dark undertones make this a very engaging read。 This story was epic in its scope and earth-shattering in its plot。 Enormous, world-changing events are happening all while a rusty Batman emerges Ego is destructive。I'm not a big graphic novel reader (I've read a lot of major mainstream stuff, LOVE Ascender and East of West) and I'm definitely no Batman aficionado so I came in with fresh and clueless eyes。 Needless to say, The Dark Knight Returns is completely awesome。 The art, the dialogue and the dark undertones make this a very engaging read。 This story was epic in its scope and earth-shattering in its plot。 Enormous, world-changing events are happening all while a rusty Batman emerges from retirement to patch together some sort justice for the common good。 I loved how ideology just falls apart and is completely impotent。 It is learning to work with where society is at and making former enemies into friends (and friends into foes if necessary) to bring peace and justice to everyone。 It's only through the shedding of ego and legacy that we can organize and promote a society that works together。 Phenomenal read。 。。。more

The caped crusader like he's never been seen before。Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns is one of the most iconic comic stories of all time, and revitalised Batman as a character。 Ten years have passed since Bruce Wayne hung up the cowl, but now the rise of a new gang called the Mutants calls him back to action。 However, Batman soon understands that the world has moved on and left him behind, and that he is no longer a young man。It is for good reason that this story is as critically acclaimed The caped crusader like he's never been seen before。Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns is one of the most iconic comic stories of all time, and revitalised Batman as a character。 Ten years have passed since Bruce Wayne hung up the cowl, but now the rise of a new gang called the Mutants calls him back to action。 However, Batman soon understands that the world has moved on and left him behind, and that he is no longer a young man。It is for good reason that this story is as critically acclaimed as it is。 Miller perfectly captures both the essence of Batman, and the cultural zeitgeist of the 1980s。 He creates a world where the public don't necessarily believe heroes are still needed, and that they are no better than the criminals they face。 The story is visceral and emotional, not holding back the horrors of a morally bankrupt Gotham。While entertaining, I did find the formatting and wording hard to follow at times。 This isn't a big issue, just took a little to get use to the non-conventional panelling。 It was also interesting to see how strongly the 1980s fear of thermonuclear war seeped its way into the pages of this story, a little funny in hindsight。If you like Batman, or just an honest and real story, then give TDKR a go。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I really enjoyed the graphic novel, it was an interesting story where Batman feels a sense of duty to come out of retirement to face the new threat, the Mutant Gang。 There was even a character development for Batman where he first loses then later he faces him again and is victorious。 But there is another issue that Batman struggles with, his need by the people of Gotham。 The media especially paints Batman in a negative light, but he still fights for them。 The Joker is back and makes sure the pe I really enjoyed the graphic novel, it was an interesting story where Batman feels a sense of duty to come out of retirement to face the new threat, the Mutant Gang。 There was even a character development for Batman where he first loses then later he faces him again and is victorious。 But there is another issue that Batman struggles with, his need by the people of Gotham。 The media especially paints Batman in a negative light, but he still fights for them。 The Joker is back and makes sure the people of Gotham are against him for his revenge。Robin is kinda useless though。But Superman appearing made no sense to me。 And the thing with the two characters was even more perplexing, one moment they are friends but in the climax they are fighting to the death。 And what was even more confusing was that Superman was taken out with that electric charge from the bomb, but somehow he survived and was fighting Batman。 If Superman was not in the novel, I would not have any issues with the inconsistencies it creates, because this crossover ruins the novel。I loved the fight with Two-Face, and The Joker, they were the highlight。 Batman was experiencing concern for not really the villain Two-Face, but his friend Harvey Dent。 And what’s ridiculous is that Batman never defeats the Mutant Gang at the end, they escape。 So oh well。The plot is not perfect, and the art, must have been cutting edge for the late 80s, but it’s “okay” at best by today’s standards。 I guess I’ve been spoiled by the modern age。I know my review is harsh but this is honestly how I feel after reading it for the second time。 I enjoy it, and people are allowed to celebrare it, but I don’t agree that it’s one of the greatest Batman graphic novels。 It’s good, but no masterpiece。 4/5 is still good though。 I like how the graphic novel questions Batman’s work, just like how someone reading this might question my opinion, but I digress。 。。。more
