Summary

To solve an impossible murder, you need an impossible hero…

Judith Potts is seventy-seven years old and blissfully happy。 She lives on her own in a faded mansion just outside Marlow, there’s no man in her life to tell her what to do or how much whisky to drink, and to keep herself busy she sets crosswords for The Times newspaper。

One evening, while out swimming in the Thames, Judith witnesses a brutal murder。 The local police don’t believe her story, so she decides to investigate for herself, and is soon joined in her quest by Suzie, a salt-of-the-earth dog-walker, and Becks, the prim and proper wife of the local Vicar。

Together, they are the Marlow Murder Club。

When another body turns up, they realise they have a real-life serial killer on their hands。 And the puzzle they set out to solve has become a trap from which they might never escape…

At first I found the writing style a little bit irritating, however the mystery was an enjoyable read overall。

Having read most of the "Death in Paradise" books, I was excited to see something (sort of) different from Robert。 But I just could not connect with this one。 I don't think I laughed throughout the entire book and this is supposed to be funny。 I found the end annoying where Judith just monologed for pages and pages。。。 If this is what Agatha Christie is like, I won't be reading that either。 Having read most of the "Death in Paradise" books, I was excited to see something (sort of) different from Robert。 But I just could not connect with this one。 I don't think I laughed throughout the entire book and this is supposed to be funny。 I found the end annoying where Judith just monologed for pages and pages。。。 If this is what Agatha Christie is like, I won't be reading that either。 。。。more

A good wholesome murder mystery。 Though i did guess the ending pretty early on, but the charming characters made up for it。 Sassy little Judith。

The blurb says that the author was hooked on the genre after reading Agatha Christie, but I got the vibe of an Enid Blyton book -- if the protagonists were a lot older than the usual Blyton teenagers, but not necessarily any more mature or sensible -- which is not a bad thing at all。 Enjoyable, apart from the completely unnecessary swear word and the slightly belaboured ending。

Two stars, or in the words of Goodreads "it was okay"。 Only just。Old ladies getting involved in investigating and/or committing murder is one of my favourite tropes so I was really excited for this book, and actually obtaining it was a hassle as the publication kept getting pushed back。 I moved overseas before my bookshop order had come in and mum ended up collecting it and not liking it much either, she DNFed it。So I finally got my hands on it and。。。 it was meh。 The characters never really came Two stars, or in the words of Goodreads "it was okay"。 Only just。Old ladies getting involved in investigating and/or committing murder is one of my favourite tropes so I was really excited for this book, and actually obtaining it was a hassle as the publication kept getting pushed back。 I moved overseas before my bookshop order had come in and mum ended up collecting it and not liking it much either, she DNFed it。So I finally got my hands on it and。。。 it was meh。 The characters never really came alive for me and I found it difficult to root for any of them。 The pacing was slow and there didn't seem to be anything much driving the story forward。 The police officer in charge was supposed to be likeable and sympathetic but came across as weak and incompetent。 Without giving anything away, the set up of the denouement scene - presumably to ramp up the drama - would have worked for a movie or a TV show, but in a book I found it ridiculous, with all the rapid jumping between multiple different places/people but on the same timeline。 Makes sense as the author has a background writing for TV (Death in Paradise is one of my favourite shows, too, so doubly disappointing that this book was so unimpressive)。 The story was farfetched and required quite a suspension of disbelief throughout, from the plot itself to the characters' behaviour and their backgrounds。 And honestly, I would have been OK with that if the story had sucked me in and was compelling, but it just dragged on and on。 I'd recommend checking out The Thursday Murder Club and An Elderly Lady is Up to No Good instead。 Much more interesting and memorable characters。 。。。more

I was in the mood to be amused by quirky characters solving a puzzle and I was not disappointed。 What a likeable character Judith Potts is, who together with Suzie and Becks, solves crime in Marlow。The mystery part is satisfying, but more importantly the mood is one of affectionate humour。Just what I needed。

This is such a gentle read。 What I loved about it is how straight forward the plot is, it’s one narrative rather than a million different strands and characters that are complicated to keep up with。 If you like Agatha Christie and you enjoyed Thursday Murder Club, you’ll like this。

I first spotted this book as it was written by the creator of Murder in Paradise, which is one of my favourite TV programmes。 It also looked similar to Richard Osman's book but in the event the similarities are fairly superficial I think。。 It does involve a group of female amateur sleuths but the setting is a town rather than a retirement home and the friendships of the three women develop in a very different way。 So both thoroughly enjoyable books but not really very similar。Judith, Suzie and B I first spotted this book as it was written by the creator of Murder in Paradise, which is one of my favourite TV programmes。 It also looked similar to Richard Osman's book but in the event the similarities are fairly superficial I think。。 It does involve a group of female amateur sleuths but the setting is a town rather than a retirement home and the friendships of the three women develop in a very different way。 So both thoroughly enjoyable books but not really very similar。Judith, Suzie and Becks would probably never have met let alone become friends if not for the series of murders that happens in Marlow where they all live。 All three come from completely different backgrounds and there is quite a difference in their ages。 We slowly find out more about each character as the book progresses, although we don't find out so much about Suzie so I'm sure there will be more to discover in future books in the series。 。。。more

My first, and most likely last, cosy murder mystery。

I expected this to be an English murder mystery in the vein of Agatha Christie or Midsomer Murders。 And while it somewhat delivered on that, I was actually more engaged with the lives and personalities of the four leads。 All of the leads are women, and unexpectedly, the author touches on how their gender has impacted their lives。 I was kind of hoping for more resolution there - Tanika telling her DJ wannabe husband and sexist father to go stuff themselves; Becks breaking out of the housewife mou I expected this to be an English murder mystery in the vein of Agatha Christie or Midsomer Murders。 And while it somewhat delivered on that, I was actually more engaged with the lives and personalities of the four leads。 All of the leads are women, and unexpectedly, the author touches on how their gender has impacted their lives。 I was kind of hoping for more resolution there - Tanika telling her DJ wannabe husband and sexist father to go stuff themselves; Becks breaking out of the housewife mould she’s put herself in。 While we see hints in this direction, in real life growth doesn’t happen satisfyingly quickly。 This is the first in a series so I look forward to seeing how the women continue to grow。 It’s cool that the lead detective, Tanika, is also kind of new to solving murder cases。 And I always enjoy seeing how authors contrive to have their civilian leads be taken seriously by the police。 For me, the murder took a backseat to the character growth of the four main women。 This was a fun book but wouldn’t be my top pick for a solely murder mystery。 。。。more

This was a very easy and nice read。 The three main characters are not your typical protagonists and I really liked the, nearly, all female characters。 The ending was great and I liked how it didn’t end how I thought it would。 Not the most complex book but I did like the simplicity of it。 4*

Completely disappointing compared to his other novels。 The main character Judith Potts is boring, underdeveloped, and the murder itself totally unexciting。 I could barely bring myself to finish this book, as I just didn't care what happened to any of the characters。 Such a shame, because I had high hopes。 His other books with DI Richard Poole as the main character are fantastic。 I wouldn't recommend wasting your money buying this book though。 Completely disappointing compared to his other novels。 The main character Judith Potts is boring, underdeveloped, and the murder itself totally unexciting。 I could barely bring myself to finish this book, as I just didn't care what happened to any of the characters。 Such a shame, because I had high hopes。 His other books with DI Richard Poole as the main character are fantastic。 I wouldn't recommend wasting your money buying this book though。 。。。more

Un petit cosy mystery comme on les aime : des personnages parfois loufoques mais attachants, des lieux cosy et une enquête, je ne peux que recommander ce livre ! Le petit plus ? Des petits mots croisés。

If you are a lover of cosy crime, and shows like Death in Paradise, you will enjoy this。 When Judith Potts witnesses her neighbour’s murder, she forms an intrepid group of citizen investigators with the pastor’s wife and the local dog-walker to get to the bottom of it。 This is such a feel-good read and a perfect mystery to solve from an armchair or sofa。 Judith is a delight to read – a strong-willed and eccentric retiree – and I enjoyed her forcing herself into the lives of those around her as s If you are a lover of cosy crime, and shows like Death in Paradise, you will enjoy this。 When Judith Potts witnesses her neighbour’s murder, she forms an intrepid group of citizen investigators with the pastor’s wife and the local dog-walker to get to the bottom of it。 This is such a feel-good read and a perfect mystery to solve from an armchair or sofa。 Judith is a delight to read – a strong-willed and eccentric retiree – and I enjoyed her forcing herself into the lives of those around her as she attempts to solve the crime。 I enjoyed all the twists and turns this story took, throwing out red herrings and new clues at every corner。 Unfortunately, the ending did not quite live up to my hopes – it felt too obvious to me and didn’t have the mind-twisting solution I usually hope for with these kinds of stories。 Even so, I did enjoy reading this and would certainly read more by the author。 。。。more

。。。more

This is a charming cozy mystery that follows the antics of pensioner Judith Potts who finds herself unexpectedly solving her neighbour’s murder, with the help of some other residents of Marlow。 Set in a wonderfully described picturesque village with a cast of amusing characters and constant twists and turns, this is a great and amusing read that had me hooked from the first page and had me trying to guess the solution until the very last page。

I was seeing this book everywhere, and I thought I would give it a go。 I found the plot pretty silly though, and quite predictable。 Felt like it took me ages to get through it compared to other books I have read。 I think this book however, could be a win for teenagers。

The author, who created Death in Paradise and also wrote a few tie-in novels to the show, has expanded outside of that universe with this solid Agatha Christie-style mystery。 This one takes place in the English town of Marlow, alongside the River Thames, and the main character is a headstrong older woman -- a modern take on Christie's Miss Marple character。 I look forward to reading more about these characters in the announced sequel, The Marlow Murder Club 2。 The author, who created Death in Paradise and also wrote a few tie-in novels to the show, has expanded outside of that universe with this solid Agatha Christie-style mystery。 This one takes place in the English town of Marlow, alongside the River Thames, and the main character is a headstrong older woman -- a modern take on Christie's Miss Marple character。 I look forward to reading more about these characters in the announced sequel, The Marlow Murder Club 2。 。。。more

I waited months for this book to come from England once it was published。 It was worth the wait! It was delightful and charming, but has serious undertones regarding the roles of women in society。 I’m hoping for a sequel!
