Summary

There’s a girl at their school who is always ill。 She routinely arrives late, leaves early, or doesn’t show up at all, and skips gym as a matter of course。 She’s pretty, and the boys take to whispering that she’s a cloistered princess。 As the self-described worst loser in her class soon finds out, they just don’t know what a monster she is。

So begins a tale of mysterious maladies that are supernatural in origin yet deeply revealing of the human psyche, a set of case files as given to unexpected feeling as it is to irreverent humor。 So begins the legendary novel that kicked off the MONOGATARI series, whose anime adaptations have enjoyed international popularity and critical acclaim。

This first of three parts introduces Senjogahara and Hachikuji, and fans of the blockbuster prequel KIZUMONOGATARI will be delighted to meet their favorite crazies again: the weirdly reliable narrator Araragi, class president among class presidents Hanekawa, shady problem-solver Oshino, and a certain pale, blonde former vampire。

A dry, often uncomfortable tale of a high schooler helping solve supernatural problems two girls have。 It's dialogue heavy, but unfortunately 70% of the dialogue is cringe repartee, cringe even when accounting for things lost in translation。 I will say the second part picks up significantly compared to the first, but only in the last 30 pages, and then it all gets ruined。 I really wanted to like this series。 Instead, every scene that could be good is thrown into disarray by dumb arguing, dumb fa A dry, often uncomfortable tale of a high schooler helping solve supernatural problems two girls have。 It's dialogue heavy, but unfortunately 70% of the dialogue is cringe repartee, cringe even when accounting for things lost in translation。 I will say the second part picks up significantly compared to the first, but only in the last 30 pages, and then it all gets ruined。 I really wanted to like this series。 Instead, every scene that could be good is thrown into disarray by dumb arguing, dumb fanservice like the heroine changing in front of the protagonist, or dumb non sequiturs。 There's even a crucial contradiction in the heroine, who should be extremely uncomfortable around others due to her backstory, acting so cavalier about that changing scene。 I won't be trying the rest of these works, but what little there was to like here was nice while it lasted。 。。。more

This one was really interesting, it’s a whole lot of talking。 However, this is probably the most charming dialogue I have come across so far。 If you do not like the dialogue or are not invested in the characters, this book will probably be very boring。 Reading this book was just like laying in the bed and eating ice cream。 It was just great, with not any real flaws with the story or the writing。 However, the actual flaws lay in some of the iffy scenes with young characters。 Nothing that bad happ This one was really interesting, it’s a whole lot of talking。 However, this is probably the most charming dialogue I have come across so far。 If you do not like the dialogue or are not invested in the characters, this book will probably be very boring。 Reading this book was just like laying in the bed and eating ice cream。 It was just great, with not any real flaws with the story or the writing。 However, the actual flaws lay in some of the iffy scenes with young characters。 Nothing that bad happens, but it’s definitely something that is there。 All in all, really good book for teens。 。。。more

DNF at 20%-ish。 Watched the first two episodes of the anime, later found this on my library and decided to check it out。 While the themes are interesting the writing is extremely annoying。 Seems like you'd either love it or hate it。 "Dialogue heavy" doesn't equal "bad", a story like this will have to explain a lot, but the wordy and rambling sense of telling with "funny" side notes and thoughts thrown in here and there did not hit home for me。 Tried to power through to see if it got better, but DNF at 20%-ish。 Watched the first two episodes of the anime, later found this on my library and decided to check it out。 While the themes are interesting the writing is extremely annoying。 Seems like you'd either love it or hate it。 "Dialogue heavy" doesn't equal "bad", a story like this will have to explain a lot, but the wordy and rambling sense of telling with "funny" side notes and thoughts thrown in here and there did not hit home for me。 Tried to power through to see if it got better, but I officially give up。 。。。more

the Monogatari series。 The Bakemonogatari light novel has been on top of the charts for 15 consecutive years ever since 2006。 He wrote the book in 2006 and released an adaptation in 2009。 If you’re looking for a story with mystery, psychological fiction, a bit of romance, and comedy you’ve come to the right place。 Among all the novels I have read and their adaptations watched this is the most unique thing I ever experienced except。 In this Light novel, Nsio Isin played with language, local Japanese folk tales, and Psychology。 This Light novel sides more on the mature audience。Koyomi Araragi the Main protagonist lives out his day normally just like any normal person until he saw a girl Senjougahara Hitagi falling off a set of stairs, without thinking he catches the girl and sees she has no weight anyways they live out their day and he reminisces of that moment in front of his only friend Hanekawa Tsubasa, as soon as he leaves the room he gets threatened by Senjougahara and is forced to play along, Knowing how kind Araragi is he brought her to his Mentor Oshino Nene which specializes in apparitions And Senjougahara talks about her experience and Problems so Oshino Agrees to help her and for the first time in 4 years he actually found someone who could really help。 They soon began the Ritual of summoning the god just as Oshino says only you can help yourself。 Senjougahara struggles and confesses what’s been in her mind all this time and the god returns her weight。 A few days after, Araragi visits an unknown area and sees Senjougahara。 After a while he sees a small child gets in a fight with her and tricks her to reveal who she is, she then introduces herself and explains her situation knowing Araragi’s(from the name Araragi which is good in Japanese) attitude he decides to help。 After hours of helping Mayoii Hachikuji(the child), they ask for help from Oshino so Senjougahara decides to leave and visit him then they get into another fight。 Not long after Hanekawa arrives and talks to the child and tries to be the mediator for them anyways they makeup and Senjougahara arrives, she then explains the tale of the Lost cow that Mayoii stands for lost and Hachikuji for cow or snail。 She then explains that it’s all in his head but not really soon after Senjougahara shouts to Araragi “I love you” Araragi does not mind it since it was English but he had the gist Anyways, they continue to travel to the area and brings Hachikuji to the location then she disappears。 As soon as it’s over Senjougahra explains that she is an apparition that only apparitions can see and they soon started to head home。 She then asks for Araragi’s response and pressure’s him, so he accepts and the story ends there。The Major theme in the story is the psychological trauma that carried over to their physical state。 For Senjougahara(Hitagi Crab) Senjougahara was a top student in her middle school then suddenly her mother betrayed her, her acting in self-defense she hit the cult leader which caused him to be hospitalized and her mother getting punished which result in the destruction of their family。 DSM-5 criteria for posttraumatic stress disorder are (1) exposure to a traumatic event, (2) recurrent memories, flashbacks, or physiological reactions to reminders of the trauma, (3) persistent avoidance of reminders of the trauma, (4) negative changes in cognition and mood, and (5) hypervigilance or extreme startle response。 Senjougahara displays all of these symptoms, though we cannot directly observe Senjougahara it got illustrated how he was treated which resulted in her attitude of being very conflicting from the word Senjougahara which means (Battlefield)。 For Mayoii Hachikuji she was a lost spirit that avoided people due to her showing off her independence。 Born in a conflicting household where they only fought and caused them to separate。 Due to this event, she tried to go to her mom’s house on Mother’s day which resulted in her dying by getting hit by a car。 The situation’s in her household that she experienced caused her to be very regretful and caused her to wander which made her a wandering lost spirit after her death。 Araragi during that time purposely stayed out of the house due to their conflict with her mother on Mother’s day which allowed him to see the lost snail, The bigger overview of Araragi’s and Hanekawa’s situation is in the next few Novels which I’ve also have experienced。 The story focuses on the mental state of people and how it can carry over to your physical state。To conclude I can say that Nsio Isin is a very good writer he uses Japanese folk tales that everyone in Japan can relate to, aside from that he uses a lot of wordplay which actually makes the story interesting, he is a master in using language to convey his story to others he uses modern Japanese kanji(writing system) and adds a bit of thing only Japanese can understand, Its also the reason I’m studying how to read and write Japanese but specifically he conveys his thoughts that relay to their culture so I have a long way to go for example, foreigners use Konichiwa in greetings but the Japanese use Ohayo de gozaimasu they technically are used for greeting but it differs for each person’s culture。 Finally, he uses Psychology to bring in a lot of fans who can relate。 Whenever Nsio Isin adds psychological elements he uses the common ones like the psychological effects of abuse, traumatic events, flashbacks, reminder of trauma which I know and have personally related to this, as a result, people feel like they can relate to this and it makes the person experiencing his story feel like they’re not alone with the psychological abuse they had。 。。。more

Another book in one of my favorite series, this specific installment goes into some of the earlier story arcs that are leading up to the further chapters within this series。 I think that the way NisiOisiN writes his stories is very interesting, I am not usually one for reading sentences that seem to drag on for a little too long。 But I think that it is justified when It is to express as much as is needed。

I absolutely loved the themes approached and how reflexive this made me。 However I didn’t enjoy as much as Kizumonogatari。 Because the characters weren’t that compelling plus some dialogues were exhausting。 Especially the ones with Senjogahara。

9/10The first two arcs of Monogatari are not exactly my favorites in the series, they do provide a good example of the style of writing that is to be expected, but they're mostly there to introduce the characters and world (which is of course necessary) rather than tell a compelling supernatural mystery story like some of the later arcs (Owari, Otori)。Unfortunately, I can't say I love the endless conversations and banter without the trippy visuals and great soundtrack of the anime, they're still 9/10The first two arcs of Monogatari are not exactly my favorites in the series, they do provide a good example of the style of writing that is to be expected, but they're mostly there to introduce the characters and world (which is of course necessary) rather than tell a compelling supernatural mystery story like some of the later arcs (Owari, Otori)。Unfortunately, I can't say I love the endless conversations and banter without the trippy visuals and great soundtrack of the anime, they're still well written and funny (although some jokes don't translate that well), but sometimes they do drag a bit, especially in the Mayoi arc。If the anime stayed close to the books in later seasons as much as it did with Bake, then books like Otorimonogatari and Koimonogatari will probably get a 10/10 from me, it's interesting to read the source material, but I think this is an example where the adaptation is better, due to it being faithful and due to how it elevated the strengths of the original。 。。。more

I chose to listen to Bakemonogatari for my ENG 356 class, Young Adult Literature, to fulfill the ‘audiobook’ category。I've known of the Monogatari series for some time, but it wasn't until about a year ago that my brother introduced me to it's animated adaptation, it was all in its original language which was perfectly fine, as it made use of Japanese word puns and phrasing throughout。 Thus I was surprised when I found out someone had actually gone out and translated the original novel, and even I chose to listen to Bakemonogatari for my ENG 356 class, Young Adult Literature, to fulfill the ‘audiobook’ category。I've known of the Monogatari series for some time, but it wasn't until about a year ago that my brother introduced me to it's animated adaptation, it was all in its original language which was perfectly fine, as it made use of Japanese word puns and phrasing throughout。 Thus I was surprised when I found out someone had actually gone out and translated the original novel, and even more surprised when I discovered there was an audiobook version of it。 My interest piqued, and getting an excuse to give it a listen, I chose it for my class。A quick note on the readers: As the book is told from the first person perspective, nearly all of the narration comes from Eric Kimerer, with additional roles filled by Erica Mendez, Christina Vee, and Keith Silverstein。 All of them are well seasoned voice actors, particularly in the English Dubbing department。 Kimerer does a fantastic job portraying the main character and his inner dialogue。Now, as to whether or not Bakemonogatari should be taught in schools, I would give it a yes。 Firstly, it provides a cultural look into the life of high schoolers in Japan, their struggles and how they deal with them。 The struggles of the characters manifest through various spirits and myths, largely from Japan but not exclusive to it。 None of the characters are forced to deal with their struggles through standard means, and it's all deeply personal to them, they have to save themselves, with the help of others of course, but they're not saved by them, it's something they have to do for themselves。 That is an excellent lesson to learn。 It also tackles some difficult topics, such as: divorce, wanting to forget trauma, and strained family relations。Warning for the faint of heart:Two characters get into an immature squabble, one of them bites the other's hand。A character is threatened with a stapler and boxcutter in their mouth。 The inside of their mouth gets stapled。In frequent uses of your typical 'd' and 'h' words。A character discusses how she was almost sexually abused and fended off the attacker with her cleats。Multiple topics of divorce。Vampires, ghosts, and spirits。A character walks out of the shower nude but with nothing graphical discussed。Underage drinking (just a tiny amount, not actual drinking)。Brief teenage talk about menstruation and being virgins。 。。。more

I am truly disappointed to say that I really enjoyed Bakemonogatari anime more than I enjoyed this book。 Well, this book is very good。。。 Scratch that it's a great book。 But the anime was just so overwhelmingly awesome that the books are kind of full compared to that。 I always thought books are better than any kind of TV adaptation and I still believe that is true for most of the books。 But this is one of the very few exceptions。 Now enough rambling about the anime and onto the book review。Nisioi I am truly disappointed to say that I really enjoyed Bakemonogatari anime more than I enjoyed this book。 Well, this book is very good。。。 Scratch that it's a great book。 But the anime was just so overwhelmingly awesome that the books are kind of full compared to that。 I always thought books are better than any kind of TV adaptation and I still believe that is true for most of the books。 But this is one of the very few exceptions。 Now enough rambling about the anime and onto the book review。Nisioisin's writing style is intriguing and unique。 I came across his writing for first time in "Los Angeles BB murder case"。 That was also another great book。The monogatari books takes the reader to an almost familiar world which is mostly like ours except for a few things, like you know。。。。。 Ghost, Monsters and Vampires are real。 A boy named Arraragi comes across this various kind of "aberrations" and has to deal with them。 The premise seems very simple at first but trust me it goes way deeper into the rabbit hole。 Trying to bind monogatari series in any genre is probably a fool's errand。 And maybe saying it is its own genre wouldn't be an overkill。 But if you like mystery and some unique storytelling then you'll probably like monogatari series。P。S。 If it is not painfully obvious yet。。。 Yes, I am a big fan of monogatari series。 And last advice if you watch anime then probably watch the anime as well as reading the book。 As the anime gives a totally different experience and in many cases better experience than the books。 。。。more

Anyway, this was definitely a very unique story and different from anything I've encountered before, and it will be different for anyone else who decides to give it a chance, but if you go in with an open mindset, you will most likely enjoy the story and be moved by its connotation。 。。。more

Who knew crabs and snails could be so random?Just as a warning there is some mature content, violence, and all around insulting remarks in this story so if you are overly sensitive to such things then venture no farther for I can not let you be scarred further by this story。 NisiOisiN is a special kind of crazy which shows in this book as once normal school student Koyomi Araragi finds himself helping a fellow student who has an unusual weight problem and an even worse problem with sharp things Who knew crabs and snails could be so random?Just as a warning there is some mature content, violence, and all around insulting remarks in this story so if you are overly sensitive to such things then venture no farther for I can not let you be scarred further by this story。 NisiOisiN is a special kind of crazy which shows in this book as once normal school student Koyomi Araragi finds himself helping a fellow student who has an unusual weight problem and an even worse problem with sharp things (especially her tongue) and later on he meets a lost little girl after getting into a fight with his own sisters and decides to help her。 A lot of the stories seem kind of random but from what I can tell they are actually pretty well thought out and (as the author mentions) main point of the story is not about the problems that arise and are eventually handled but rather the interesting dialogues between these unique characters who seem to have a flair for getting affected by the supernatural while having to deal with real world problems as well。Also, before I end this review I want to note that this book has an audio book from Audible for those that have a hard time following along the character interactions so you basically get a performed reading that you can hear from narators Eric Kimerer, Cristina Vee, Erica Mendez, and Keith Silverstein。 Personally I like getting the audio books with the kindle books so I can listen to them at work and this one was done well。 。。。more

I have been wanting to read this series for a long time but have never gotten around to it。 So I was pleasantly surprised when I found out that there is an audiobook release。 I can always find time to listen to an audiobook, it's much harder to put aside the time needed to sit down and finish a proper book。 It should be noted that it's not just your typical audio release either but more of an audio drama, with multiple voice actors and music, a real big-budget production。 Which is a bit strange I have been wanting to read this series for a long time but have never gotten around to it。 So I was pleasantly surprised when I found out that there is an audiobook release。 I can always find time to listen to an audiobook, it's much harder to put aside the time needed to sit down and finish a proper book。 It should be noted that it's not just your typical audio release either but more of an audio drama, with multiple voice actors and music, a real big-budget production。 Which is a bit strange I have to admit。 I always figured the reason we get so few audio releases for light novels is that the audience is so small that it doesn't make sense financially。 。。。more
