Summary

A revelatory new translation of the playful, incomparable masterpiece of one of the greatest black authors in the Americas

A Penguin Classic

The mixed-race grandson of ex-slaves, Machado de Assis is not only Brazil's most celebrated writer but also a writer of world stature, who has been championed by the likes of Philip Roth, Susan Sontag, Allen Ginsberg, John Updike, and Salman Rushdie。 In his masterpiece, the 1881 novel The Posthumous Memoirs of Brs Cubas (translated also as Epitaph of a Small Winner), the ghost of a decadent and disagreeable aristocrat decides to write his memoir。 He dedicates it to the worms gnawing at his corpse and tells of his failed romances and halfhearted political ambitions, serves up harebrained philosophies, and complains with gusto from the depths of his grave。 Wildly imaginative, wickedly witty, and ahead of its time, the novel has been compared to the work of everyone from Cervantes to Sterne to Joyce to Nabokov to Borges to Calvino, and has influenced generations of writers around the world。

This new English translation is the first to include extensive notes providing crucial historical and cultural context。 Unlike other editions, it also preserves Machado's original chapter breaks--each of the novel's 160 short chapters begins on a new page--and includes excerpts from previous versions of the novel never before published in English。

This book sounded like it would be right up my alley - a modernist novel from the nineteenth century。 I loved the idea of a memoir from a dead person dedicated to the worms who gnawed his remains。 I loved the idea of being carried into the afterlife on the back of an enormous dream hippo。 I enjoy fiction where the author breaks the fourth wall and plays with structural conventions。 And I am a sucker for stories of the nineteenth century idle rich from Austen to Pushkin and Goncharov and back to This book sounded like it would be right up my alley - a modernist novel from the nineteenth century。 I loved the idea of a memoir from a dead person dedicated to the worms who gnawed his remains。 I loved the idea of being carried into the afterlife on the back of an enormous dream hippo。 I enjoy fiction where the author breaks the fourth wall and plays with structural conventions。 And I am a sucker for stories of the nineteenth century idle rich from Austen to Pushkin and Goncharov and back to Trollope and Thackery。 So combining all of these elements into a novel set in Brazil seemed perfect。 And it was pretty damned good, though my expectations were so high that I wanted more than it delivered。When the character of Quincas Borba was introduced, I remembered that a few years ago I read the later novel by Machado de Assis that bears this character's curious name, and I remembered how again I had been drawn by the promotional copy and reviews only to be a bit disappointed by the book when I read it。Maybe my disappointment came from feeling that the stylistic flourishes were just flourishes - spandrels that were included for show and for the author to prove that he could flaunt convention and get away with it。 They were grafted onto a typical story of a scoundrel who was not as colorful as Barry Lyndon or Eugene Onegin。 I guess there was a point in the stylistic stuff being tied to the absurdity of existence and to Bras Cubas' disdain for human society when writing from beyond the grave。 But it should have been more integral to the story。Overall it was pretty good, and I understand why Machado de Assis has admirers, but for my money the prize for greatest Brazilian novelist still goes to Clarice Lispector。 。。。more

Classic books give us a certain fear and I can confess that Posthumous Memoirs of Brás Cubas has always been a challenge for me。 Despite having already read the novel Dom Casmurro, also authored by Machado, and having taken a course in college about the author's short stories, I still didn't feel ready to “face” this work。 However, I decided that 2020 was the year and I don't regret waiting so long to read this “monument” in our literature。Before actually talking about my reading experience, I t Classic books give us a certain fear and I can confess that Posthumous Memoirs of Brás Cubas has always been a challenge for me。 Despite having already read the novel Dom Casmurro, also authored by Machado, and having taken a course in college about the author's short stories, I still didn't feel ready to “face” this work。 However, I decided that 2020 was the year and I don't regret waiting so long to read this “monument” in our literature。Before actually talking about my reading experience, I think it's important to talk a little about the plot and what this story is about, which most likely must have haunted many students during high school and/or college entrance exams。In general terms, I can say that Posthumous Memoirs of Brás Cubas is not just dedicated to a memoir of someone after his death, as the title makes explicit。 By connecting with the memories and reflections of the late author Brás Cubas, we are directed to the city of Rio de Janeiro at the end of the 19th century。 This period is marked by the strong presence of the Portuguese in Brazil and with it the European influence in the “Tupiniquim” territory。 This means that Portugal brought to Brazil not only its monarchy, but European customs and cultures。It is interesting to see our History and its socio-historical context of a period through literature。 There are also passages about slavery, specifically the gradual process of slaves' liberation, being portrayed here that some blacks were able to buy their letter of enfranchisement and still buy other slaves and reproduce the same punishments they received from their owners。Machado de Assis as a black author talks about the situation of slaves, but his character in this novel is a white man, from a rich family and status in society at the time, that is, a portrait of the Rio bourgeoisie and its dramas (white people problems )。 Brás Cubas' pessimistic reflections reveal his experiences and disappointments, many of them included, and thus it is possible to conclude that money and/or social status are no guarantee of a subject's happiness。 It is not by chance that this famous ending sums up the entire pessimistic atmosphere of the work。Speaking now specifically about my reading experience, one of the points that most surprised me was the speed with which I read the work。 I think this is due to two factors: the first because the work consists of extremely short chapters (some did not fill half the page); and the second to 1st person narrative with a narrator who converses with his reader。 Both factors made the reading engaging, because it brought up questions that particularly made me curious to know what happened。 In fact, the plot itself draws attention with a strange effect, having a deceased author as a differential to tell the story of a typical and common man of his time。 In this sense, the narrative with a non-linear time is also added, showing in a disheveled way the different phases of life and growth of Brás: from death at age 60, to youth, training in Europe, childhood, the disappointing love relationships and family and the attempt at a political career。However, the reading also brought some obstacles, such as the flowery language at times, and it was even necessary to stop reading to look for the meaning of some terms。 As much as I got used to reading classics with the Faculty of Letters, and as a result, a language that often escapes standard and commonplace use, I needed to stop and research so that the text was fully understood。Another obstacle during the reading was the various references that Machado de Assis uses in his writing, showing how much he drank from various sources。 The author ranges from ancient classics, philosophers and other important names in world literature, such as biblical references。 The edition I read had several footnotes explaining each expression and its authors, enriching the reader's knowledge, but I confess that they left the reading of the novel more truncated, and as several of the references were even bigger than the text itself, I skipped, even because some of them I already knew。 Other notes referred to the rus and locations of Rio de Janeiro and explained which location corresponds to today。 So, the difficulty here, which most likely traumatized high school students and those who do not have much contact with literature, is essentially due to the reader's literary repertoire。 That is, if he has some prior knowledge, he will not feel the need to look for the footnotes, otherwise, it can be torture to keep going back and forth to the text with so much information。 But I say: reading is not impossible! In the same way that the short chapters made reading faster at the same time it was difficult to keep the characters' names。 Many of them were mentioned in a rush to return later chapters and I kept asking myself “who is it again?”, it was necessary to go back to the previous chapters to situate myself in the narrative。 Sometimes the narrator himself tells his reader which chapter a particular character had previously appeared, which also helps to remember the characters。Because of the semester I had at college, when the program was focused on Machado's short stories and a novel, I was able to recognize some recurring themes in Machado's work, such as the love triangle, adultery and the act of writing, as well as the socio-historical context that I mentioned earlier。A point that didn't catch my attention was the more philosophical tone, coming mainly from the character Quincas Borba and his “humanity”。 It was not entirely clear what the purpose of this idea is, but there is a book of this character, also authored by Machado, which I believe better explains this concept。 But if we stop to reflect, the book is composed of philosophical issues, including life and death, love and happiness, and with that the song Epitafio came to my mind, since both Machado and the lyrics of the Titãs reflect on life after death, but the first in a more negative and unrepentant way about the acts committed during life。Finally, I can finally say that I read this great Brazilian classic and understood its history, and despite having devoured the reading this was not the best book I've read in my life, but I understand its importance。 Perhaps this is one of those books that need to be revisited over the years so that the understanding is enriched。 。。。more
