Summary

As a Man Thinketh is James Allen's third book, first published in 1903。 In it, he details how man is the creator and shaper of his destiny by the thoughts which he thinks。 He rises and falls in exact accordance with the character of the thoughts which he entertains。 His environment is the result of what he has thought and done in the past, and his circumstances in the future are being shaped and built by his present desires, aspirations, thoughts and actions。 He therefore who chooses and pursues a particular line of thought, consciously builds his own destiny。

Part of the New Thought Movement, Allen reveals the secrets to having the most fulfilling existence possible, and it’s easier than any of us could have imagined。 The title for the essay comes from the Bible: “As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he,” Proverbs, chapter 23, verse 7。 In more than a century, As A Man Thinketh has become an inspirational classic, selling millions of copies worldwide and bringing faith, inspiration, and self healing to all who have encountered it。 In this new edition of As A Man Thinketh, readers will be enthralled by James Allen’s thoughts and direction to take charge of their own destiny, as it has for over 100 years。

In the series Classic Thoughts and Thinkers, explore some of the most influential texts of our time along with the inner workings of its greatest thinkers。 With works from great American figures such as Theodore Roosevelt and Emily Dickinson and seminal documents including the Constitution of the Unites States, this series focuses on the most reflective and thought-provoking writings of the last two centuries。 These beautiful hardcovers are the perfect historical perspective for meeting the challenges of the modern world。

Other titles in this series include:  Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin, Collected Poems of Robert Frost, Common Sense, Constitution of the United States with the Declaration of Independence, Helen Keller, Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, Selected Poems of Emily Dickinson, and Theodore Roosevelt’s Words of Wit and Wisdom。

This book will speak to your soul。 Much needed for today’s culture。 Be prepared to read slowly and stop often for introspection。 If you let it, the book will show you how to reform your life paradigm and embark on a new way of thinking。

Some good food for (positive) thought。 Extremely quick read。 Oft repetitive。 As another friend pointed out, he ignores certain circumstances (e。g。, genetics, disability) that might limit, impair, or preclude the ability of purely positive thought to change those same circumstances (or others)。 That said, I think the power of positive thinking can have impact, at very least, on the margins of one's life。Edit: In fact, here's good evidence of that last statement: https://www。newyorker。com/science/ Some good food for (positive) thought。 Extremely quick read。 Oft repetitive。 As another friend pointed out, he ignores certain circumstances (e。g。, genetics, disability) that might limit, impair, or preclude the ability of purely positive thought to change those same circumstances (or others)。 That said, I think the power of positive thinking can have impact, at very least, on the margins of one's life。Edit: In fact, here's good evidence of that last statement: https://www。newyorker。com/science/mar。。。。 。。。more

This book summarizes all the modern "Self-Help" books combined well before 110 years ago。 This book is the origin of so called "Law of Attraction"。 The modern bestsellers like "The Secret" was written based on this book。 This book is sweet, Beautiful and Intuitive Yet boring and Repetitive。 I think One sentence would suffice to summarize the whole book, "As the man thinks, So he Gets"。 This book summarizes all the modern "Self-Help" books combined well before 110 years ago。 This book is the origin of so called "Law of Attraction"。 The modern bestsellers like "The Secret" was written based on this book。 This book is sweet, Beautiful and Intuitive Yet boring and Repetitive。 I think One sentence would suffice to summarize the whole book, "As the man thinks, So he Gets"。 。。。more

A highly thought provoking book, one that made me rethink my entire perspective on life。It talks about how profoundly powerful are one’s thoughts。Thoughts shape character。Thoughts shape circumstances。Thoughts shape health。It talks about why one must have a purpose in life。 This is such a basic thing, yet almost everyone is oblivious of it, and keeps wandering out in life with no direction。 I realised I must have a purpose。Overall, a super fundamental primer on super fundamental aspect of life - A highly thought provoking book, one that made me rethink my entire perspective on life。It talks about how profoundly powerful are one’s thoughts。Thoughts shape character。Thoughts shape circumstances。Thoughts shape health。It talks about why one must have a purpose in life。 This is such a basic thing, yet almost everyone is oblivious of it, and keeps wandering out in life with no direction。 I realised I must have a purpose。Overall, a super fundamental primer on super fundamental aspect of life - thoughts, as they create us。The book was originally written in 1903, yet is more relevant today than ever。 The language is extremely mind boggling, and made me reminisce of another classic of that era - The Richest Man in Babylon。I would read it again and again- not many books one can say that for。 。。。more

There's a lot there that's interesting, but it's really a product of its time。 It could, alternatively, have been titled "In Defense of Capitalism, the Protestant Work Ethic, and Christian Values"。Certainly, a lazy rich person won't go far, but he'll still live a better life than someone born in poverty who couldn't go to school。 Especially now in the age of diplomas, degrees, certificates, and licenses。The author touches on the idea that a man with right thoughts that is living in squalor is so There's a lot there that's interesting, but it's really a product of its time。 It could, alternatively, have been titled "In Defense of Capitalism, the Protestant Work Ethic, and Christian Values"。Certainly, a lazy rich person won't go far, but he'll still live a better life than someone born in poverty who couldn't go to school。 Especially now in the age of diplomas, degrees, certificates, and licenses。The author touches on the idea that a man with right thoughts that is living in squalor is somehow better off than a rich man with wrong thoughts, but the way he couches his argument in economics felt out of touch with reality to me。What I mean is that it is implied throughout the text that wealth somehow follows good behavior and that if you don't get wealthy then there's something wrong with you。 I disagree with that。 Gaining wealth is about more than effort。 It's also about time, place, resources, and connections。The basic idea is nice, though。 Work hard, cultivate whatever skills you have, and make the best of your situation。 That's really all any of us can do。 And if we cultivated a proper attitude and outlook and were good to each other, life would be better。I'll do a re-read and see if my opinion changes。 。。。more

In under 60 pages the book was sufficiently satisfactory to feed one’s mind with positive thoughts and instill values about who we should aim to become to pave the way for achievements and peace of mind。 Surprisingly what I liked and simultaneously hated about the book is that it revolves around mainly one idea which is how we control our own lives or rather how we should take control of our own lives。 James Allen in his short book told me about the person I should opt to become, but didn’t tell In under 60 pages the book was sufficiently satisfactory to feed one’s mind with positive thoughts and instill values about who we should aim to become to pave the way for achievements and peace of mind。 Surprisingly what I liked and simultaneously hated about the book is that it revolves around mainly one idea which is how we control our own lives or rather how we should take control of our own lives。 James Allen in his short book told me about the person I should opt to become, but didn’t tell me HOW to become this person。 Nonetheless it was appreciable to read positive thoughts forging one to achieve whatever they want and attain a purpose and a vision for they will be reflected on their success, health and wealthDown here are some of the things James has written that gracefully played the role of beautiful reminders to becoming better versions of ourselves and to keep trying and working hard regardless of our failures and obstacles and that the outer conditions are just a reflection of our own inner state。“Thoughts in the mind determine your course, Steering your life for better or worse。If you dwell on thoughts that are petty and unkind,Pain will follow you as the ox’s plough—behind。But dwell on thoughts that are noble and pure,And joy will follow you as your own shadow—sure。—adapted from a saying of the Buddha”“Just as a gardener weeds, waters, and cares for his or her plot, we must cultivate our minds—weeding out negative, mistaken, useless thoughts, while encouraging positive, true, fruitful thoughts。 Even good seedlings, not cared for, will be choked out by weeds。”“You will be what you will to be”“Your inner will, that unseen force,Offspring of mind and soul,Can forge a path to any goal,And conquer anything in its course。”“Your circumstances may be unfavorable now, but they will not remain so for long if you conceive an ideal and strive for it。” 。。。more

I gave this two stars, only because it was short and readable。 The arguments are facile and inherently contradictory。 If every person is potentially the master of the universe, what about all of the others that person would have to dominate?Like a horse can't do calculus, most people are incapable of achieving their goals or dreams (if they even have any), and the few honest people who have admit luck and chance were significant factors。 Saying you can't achieve without sacrifice is basically th I gave this two stars, only because it was short and readable。 The arguments are facile and inherently contradictory。 If every person is potentially the master of the universe, what about all of the others that person would have to dominate?Like a horse can't do calculus, most people are incapable of achieving their goals or dreams (if they even have any), and the few honest people who have admit luck and chance were significant factors。 Saying you can't achieve without sacrifice is basically the same as saying no risk, no reward, and for every billionaire who makes his bed every morning and thinks positive thoughts, there are millions of others doing likewise who are doomed to failure。 。。。more

A man is the summation of his thoughts。 His character, circumstance, health, purpose, achievements, visions, and calmness depend on how he channelizes his thoughts。 James Allen outlines the crux of this idea in As a Man Thinketh。 Allen compares the human mind to a garden。 You can either sow and nourish trees that shelter you or let the weed grow。 External factors might not always be in our control。 Still, if we can control our thoughts, we can control our reactions to them。 This is ultimately wh A man is the summation of his thoughts。 His character, circumstance, health, purpose, achievements, visions, and calmness depend on how he channelizes his thoughts。 James Allen outlines the crux of this idea in As a Man Thinketh。 Allen compares the human mind to a garden。 You can either sow and nourish trees that shelter you or let the weed grow。 External factors might not always be in our control。 Still, if we can control our thoughts, we can control our reactions to them。 This is ultimately what we can do about life's situations, and what matters。 At just 50 pages, this is one of the shortest yet the most valuable books I've read。 Needless to say, I finished it in one sitting, which I felt didn't justify the time the book deserved, but I'm pretty sure I'll be revisiting it occasionally。 I especially loved how the author differentiates between right thinking and positive thinking。 He even clarifies that it takes practice to mold your thoughts into the right thinking。 This is my single biggest takeaway from this book。It is a short and valuable read。 Anyone who has an hour to spare on their hands mustn't miss it。 。。。more

A great little book to introduce us to the power of the mind。 The author invites us to consider ourselves more than a mere body。 To go beyond our own limitations and to see ourselves as pure thought and consciousness。 As a man thinks so he lives。 Circumstances do not define a person。 His thoughts define what and how he lives。 The author pinpoints the fact that there is no such thing as luck or chance。 Success is not an overnight accomplishment。 Behind every great success, there is effort and wor A great little book to introduce us to the power of the mind。 The author invites us to consider ourselves more than a mere body。 To go beyond our own limitations and to see ourselves as pure thought and consciousness。 As a man thinks so he lives。 Circumstances do not define a person。 His thoughts define what and how he lives。 The author pinpoints the fact that there is no such thing as luck or chance。 Success is not an overnight accomplishment。 Behind every great success, there is effort and work。 I particularly loved the part where the author mentions the power of visions and goals。 A vision moves a person to act in a certain way。 Holding our vision in mind and acting upon it even if others say we are a bit crazy, will guide us to great achievements。 Never underestimate the power of the mind and the power of inner, spiritual work。 With every block we surrender, we pass to the next level of inner freedom and peace。 Serenity and calmness are the results of a mind which actively plants the seeds of virtue, honesty, and selfless actions。 The book asks us to take full responsibility for our lives, our thoughts, and our circumstances。 There is no other way to live a peaceful and successful life other than taking good care and attention to our inner world。 Cheerfulness brings about happiness, fear and doubt are the enemies。 。。。more

One of the books that managed to forever change the way I view myself。Reading it did not prompt me to make a 180 degree shift in perspective, it did not shatter the walls of my perception, it did not give new ground-breaking insight into a new way of seeing things, however it managed to do what very few books can: it gave birth to a small idea inside me。And that idea will forever stay with me, shifting my worldview, my beliefs and my behavior in small ways, each and every day from now on。
