Summary

A princess in exile, the boy she left at the altar, six enchanted cranes, and a dragon from the deepest sea。

Shiori, the only princess of Kiata, has a secret。 Forbidden magic runs through her veins。 Normally she conceals it well, but on the morning of her betrothal ceremony, Shiori loses control。 At first, her mistake seems like a stroke of luck, forestalling the wedding she never wanted, but it also catches the attention of Raikama, her stepmother。

Raikama has dark magic of her own, and she banishes the young princess, turning her brothers into cranes, and warning Shiori that she must speak of it to no one: for with every word that escapes her lips, one of her brothers will die。

Peniless, voiceless, and alone, Shiori searches for her brothers, and, on her journey, uncovers a conspiracy to overtake the throne--a conspiracy more twisted and deceitful, more cunning and complex, than even Raikama's betrayal。 Only Shiori can set the kingdom to rights, but to do so she must place her trust in the very boy she fought so hard not to marry。 And she must embrace the magic she's been taught all her life to contain--no matter what it costs her。

From the author of Spin the Dawn comes a breathtakingly original fantasy inspired by East Asian folklore and perfect for fans of Leigh Bardugo or Tomi Adeyemi。

I really enjoyed this book, and never thought I would be so worried about cranes。 It is a fairytale with a curse, a family that truly cares for one another, and the arranged marriage trope。 All are a good time and make for a grand adventure。

Six Crimson Cranes is truly the perfect mix of fairytale, court intrigue, soft romance, and humor。 It's an epic fantasy based on East Asian folklore, and the atmosphere and charming (but surprisingly unpredictable) story suck you right in。 From the first few lines I was hooked, and spent hours lost in Shiori's world of forbidden magic and mouth-watering foods。 Shiori herself is one of my favorite YA heroines to date。 She's bold, funny, has a good heart but can be careless and even hurtful, and i Six Crimson Cranes is truly the perfect mix of fairytale, court intrigue, soft romance, and humor。 It's an epic fantasy based on East Asian folklore, and the atmosphere and charming (but surprisingly unpredictable) story suck you right in。 From the first few lines I was hooked, and spent hours lost in Shiori's world of forbidden magic and mouth-watering foods。 Shiori herself is one of my favorite YA heroines to date。 She's bold, funny, has a good heart but can be careless and even hurtful, and it's impossible not to admire her determination in the face of despair and agonizing pain--yet she still feels like a 16 year old, rash and overconfident at times but striving to be better for her family。 Her growth over the course of the novel is significant, and it's beautiful to watch her mature and strengthen。And don't even get me STARTED on Takkan。 Like Shiori, babe, I get that you don't want to be forced into a marriage you didn't want and get sent north, but he's ruggedly handsome, kind, generous to the point of absurdity, draws/sings/tells stories。。。I mean。 Talk about a heart of gold。 If you, like me, are a sucker for fairytales and folklore, dragons (!!!), lovable side characters (Kiki, darling, you have my whole heart), and a heroine you can't help but root for, this is absolutely the book for you。Thank you to NetGalley and Random House Children's for providing an ARC in exchange for an honest review。 。。。more

Honestly I loved this book it was amazing and I didn’t see the plot twists coming。 Shiori was mute most of the time which I thought would be annoying or a problem for the narrative but the author found creative ways to still convey words out loud。 Shiori while annoying at times also became a great and strong character and I loved her。 Also I really want my own Kiki where do I get one? Also the love and bond between the siblings was absolutely adorable and I want so much more interactions between Honestly I loved this book it was amazing and I didn’t see the plot twists coming。 Shiori was mute most of the time which I thought would be annoying or a problem for the narrative but the author found creative ways to still convey words out loud。 Shiori while annoying at times also became a great and strong character and I loved her。 Also I really want my own Kiki where do I get one? Also the love and bond between the siblings was absolutely adorable and I want so much more interactions between them as humans。 Their dynamic was honestly the best。 Btw can we talk about Takkan? I love him he was so well written and such a sweetheart I fell for him along with Shiori。 I applaud how well done he was。 At one point I actually had to sit there and think wow he’s too amazing。 Btw his sister is so cute I need more interaction between talking shiori and megari! I love the world this was set in as well, both real and magical at the same time I could see that it drew upon East Asian culture and was well blended。 The world holds so many different possibilities in it I need more!! Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for providing me with an ARC of this bookI enjoyed, but wasn't a huge fan of Elizabeth Lim's previous work Spin the Dawn, so I had somewhat tempered expectations for Six Crimson Cranes。 However, I really enjoyed this book, as I felt that it took all of the elements from 'Spin the Dawn' that I had loved (such as the fairy tale-like atmosphere, lyrical world-building and strong female protagonists) but improved on them。 Shiori's development through Six Crimson Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for providing me with an ARC of this bookI enjoyed, but wasn't a huge fan of Elizabeth Lim's previous work Spin the Dawn, so I had somewhat tempered expectations for Six Crimson Cranes。 However, I really enjoyed this book, as I felt that it took all of the elements from 'Spin the Dawn' that I had loved (such as the fairy tale-like atmosphere, lyrical world-building and strong female protagonists) but improved on them。 Shiori's development through Six Crimson Cranes was probably my favourite element of this book - her change from spoiled, mischievous girl to a powerful and courageous woman felt realistic and developed at a solid pace。 The romance also felt more grounded in this book than in Spin the DawnIf I had one complaint about this book, I would say that I felt the brothers could have had a little more character development - they were somewhat indistinguishable from each other (with the exceptions of a few of them, such as Hasho)。 If you enjoyed Spin the Dawn, but didn't quite love it, I would definitely recommend giving Six Crimson Cranes a shot, as this book has the same fairy tale vibe, but is a much more captivating read。 。。。more

I had high hopes for this book and Elizabeth Lim did not disappoint! One of my favourite aspects of this story was the strong sibling bond between Shiori and her brothers - it was really refreshing to see a story centred on sibling love and I appreciated how genuine they were- from their bickering, to their patience and their ferocious desire to look out for one another。 I also thoroughly enjoyed all the exquisite food references -'rabbit shaped cookies filled with sweet red beans, skewers of rice cake stuffed with fresh peaches or melon paste, sugar candies shaped into tigers and bears' -Shiori is always hungry, which I can definitely relate to!! The story and world building was fantastic from start to finish。 The character development also was great。 I liked how how this story was centered around Shiori, her brothers, and the curse, but branched into so much more。 You could always feel the love and care they have for each other coming off the pages。 Shiori is an incredible main character。 I found her to be very entertaining and such a strong girl。 She was so dedicated to the task no matter how much obstacles came in her way。 I loved watching her march forward with no fears or what she would face。 Shiroi grew a lot from when we first met her in the book。 Discovering the entire truth about the “curse” that Raikama had placed on Shiori and her brothers had so many twists and turns。 I never could tell what was going to happen next。 I had my suspicions about Zairena since we met her。 Shiori and Takkan’s bond growing through the story was so lovely to read about。 I like how it went from Shiori purposefully sabotaging their marriage ceremony to taking the time to see the person he really is。 I adore them together! The story ended so nicely for Book 1 and left me so excited for the sequel! 。。。more

Shiori is a good narrator, engaging and self-aware enough to not be annoying。 Elizabeth Lim’s pacing between action, introspection, and conversation (such as it is with Shiori’s voice out of commission) is pitched really well and the side characters have enough substance to be memorable for their appearances。I knew the story, or at least the bones for it and I still enjoyed this one。 It’s likeable in the way a lot of children’s/YA based on fairytales are, done well。I meant to say: it starts with a dragon!!! 3。5 or 4 stars A huge thank you to NETGALLEY for providing me with an ARC of this book。 All thoughts are my own。 Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this book。 The retelling aspect was done extremely well, and I was definitely invested in all of these characters。 The relationship that the main character had with a certain mythical creature as well was so so fun to read about。 All of the characters, in my opinion, were very well developed, and the end left me craving the sequel already。 The relationshi 3。5 or 4 stars A huge thank you to NETGALLEY for providing me with an ARC of this book。 All thoughts are my own。 Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this book。 The retelling aspect was done extremely well, and I was definitely invested in all of these characters。 The relationship that the main character had with a certain mythical creature as well was so so fun to read about。 All of the characters, in my opinion, were very well developed, and the end left me craving the sequel already。 The relationship near the last half of the story is definitely one of my favorites ever。 The entire plot of the story was done very well, and I was hooked in this story from the start。 For me, the pacing felt off during the middle of the story, and as we neared the ending of the story, some things weren’t explained as well as I thought they could have been。 Finally, I felt as if in the start of this story, it was going in multiple different directions at once, which wasn’t my favorite, but I didn’t mind it。 I would recommend this story to anyone who enjoyed wicked fox or priory of the orange tree! 。。。more

Elizabeth Lim continues to enchant in this beautifully written fairytale adaption of The Six Swans。 Shiori is the princess of Kiata, and is able to perform magic, which was said to have disappeared from their kingdom。 She is the youngest of seven, and has six older brothers。 Her stepmother Raikama is mysterious, and when Shiori stumbles upon a secret of hers, her brothers are transformed and she must set out on a quest to save them。 I have read other versions of the original fairytale, and I was Elizabeth Lim continues to enchant in this beautifully written fairytale adaption of The Six Swans。 Shiori is the princess of Kiata, and is able to perform magic, which was said to have disappeared from their kingdom。 She is the youngest of seven, and has six older brothers。 Her stepmother Raikama is mysterious, and when Shiori stumbles upon a secret of hers, her brothers are transformed and she must set out on a quest to save them。 I have read other versions of the original fairytale, and I was still surprised by this book。 Six Crimson Cranes takes the original fairytale and beautifully integrates it into this new retelling。 The descriptions are gorgeous, and Shiori is a likable and strong heroine。 I enjoyed the interactions between Shiori, and her two possible love interests。 Shiori had such great character growth over the course of this book, and the ending was really good and unexpected。 The only thing I think that could be improved are the descriptions of her brothers, only a few were really described well to where I could differentiate them。 I sped through this book, and am highly anticipating the sequel! 。。。more

If you love;- Fairytale retellings- Dragons- 6 brothers and 1 sister who love one another so fiercely- A twist to traditional tropes- Fun fairytale tropes- Heroine who, while scared and alone, pushes through life's trails to save her family- A super cute beginning to a love interest。Overall, ** Thank you to Netgalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review**The cover art is what drew me in, the synopsis hooked me in and Elizabeth Lim's obvious love and passion for fairytales made me a fan! *3。5 stars*first off i want to give a big thank you to netgalley and random house children’s for providing me with an arc!i was so excited to get my hands on this book because 1) the cover is absolutely stunning and 2) magical princess? curses? falling in love with the person you didn’t want to marry? sign me up。 and six crimson cranes turned out to be an enjoyable story that lays the foundation for what i think will be an even better sequel。 my favorite aspect of the book was the main character *3。5 stars*first off i want to give a big thank you to netgalley and random house children’s for providing me with an arc!i was so excited to get my hands on this book because 1) the cover is absolutely stunning and 2) magical princess? curses? falling in love with the person you didn’t want to marry? sign me up。 and six crimson cranes turned out to be an enjoyable story that lays the foundation for what i think will be an even better sequel。 my favorite aspect of the book was the main character shiori; that girl has no fear and i respect it。 she doesn’t care about embarrassing herself or making people angry, she just does what she has to do without hesitation and it was so refreshing to read from her perspective。 and takkan was a great love interest as well。 i loved that he was a sensitive soul but was still brave, and most importantly, he respected and supported shiori’s decisions。 i liked the side characters but would have liked to see more of them, especially shiori’s brothers and raikama (where is the raikama prequel honestly)。 fairytale vibes were promised and elizabeth lim definitely delivered on that front, but that resulted in the book reading a bit young for me personally, though there were quite a few bloody scenes to balance that out。 my other issue with the writing was that the first half of the book skips forward in time a lot, making me feel like i didn’t have the opportunity to get attached to the characters or the world until things slowed down in the second half。 overall, i feel like this book serves mainly as a prelude to the real story, but the ending was fast-paced and had some twists that i didn’t see coming, so i have hope for the next installment in the series。 。。。more

Thank you to Penguin Teen Canada for sending me an ARC for an honest review。 5/5 starsI was so excited to read this one, and Elizabeth Lim did not disappoint! Six Crimson Cranes was a rich fantasy that came to life through vivid descriptions of food and scenery along with interesting elements of magic and mythology that blend together to create a well-rounded setting for the story。 Along with the worldbuilding, the characters were well fleshed out, and I enjoyed being in Shiori’s head。 The writing flowed easily, and I was engaged the whole time。 The pacing felt good for the story。 Shiori’s journey takes a few months, but I felt like even when there weren’t any big and action-packed events happening, there was still progress being made for her journey in some way。 Shiori is a Princess, and she’s a bit of a troublemaker。 When snooping about reveals secrets, Shiori is cursed and sent away from her home。 As part of her curse, her six older brothers are turned into cranes。 Shiori is unable to speak because for each word she utters, one of her brothers will die。 This is quite the predicament, and Shiori was a character who persevered and grew over the course of her journey。 I liked her relationship with Kiki, and I enjoyed the slow burning romance between Shiori and her betrothed。 Taken was a great character, and I like how he balanced Shiori。 This book was exciting, intriguing, magical, and so much fun to read。 I’d recommend it to readers looking for a new fantasy adventure with elements of mythology who enjoy a slow burn romance as well as strong characters。 。。。more
