Summary

'A charming - and sharp - love story about what it means to fall for someone who is your polar opposite' Sunday Telegraph
_______________________________________________________

Lucy married just the sort of man you might expect: a university graduate who runs his own business。 Unfortunately he turned out to have serious dependency issues。

Joseph is shaking off the memory of his last date, a girl who ticked all the right boxes and also drove him up the wall。

On an average Saturday morning in a butcher's shop in North London, Lucy and Joseph meet on opposite sides of the counter。 She is a teacher and mother of two, with a past she is trying to forget; he is an aspiring DJ with a wide-open future that maybe needs to start becoming more focused。 Lucy and Joseph are opposites in almost all ways。 Can something life-changing grow from uncommon ground?

Nick Hornby's brilliantly observed, tender and brutally funny new novel gets to the heart of what it means to fall headlong in love with the best possible person - someone who may not be just like you at all。

I have seen Nick Hornby books adapted into movies, but never have read one, so this took a bit to get through。 Overall it was good at tackling interracial relationships, different generation dating, Brexit, Trump and just being human。 We all go through weirdness and try to be something to everyone。

Did not excit me。 Average read。 Not much happens。 He says nothing about race or age which is of any significance。 A disappointing read

Nick hornby rights good But after the beginning, nothing really happens in this book。 The author writes beautifully about relationships, their interactions and what they are thinking。

There are many sweet and funny moments in this unique love story, but a lot of very forced interactions and political dialogue ultimately drag it down。

This was great and everything you loved about those old, classic Hornby tomes。 Despite an obvious nod (and PC-box ticking) to modern attitudes regarding race and gender, it was a real page turner and like all of his books, clearly would make an excellent film。 And probably will at some point。 But definitely worth a read regardless。

Unfortunately this was one of the least interesting books I’ve ever read。 I didn’t like the characters and it was just uneventful。 I skimmed most of it since the details were not important and so I could be finished。

Unfortunately, I lost interest when a woman walked into the butchers and asked for a child minder? What on Earth?

2。5 ⭐️? Despite reading it in one sitting, I found it a bit of a strange disappointment。 It had its moments but something felt off kilter for me。 Also rigid monogomy sucks 🤷🏼‍♀️

duuuuuuuude this was a cute love story and such an interesting look at gender, age, and race dynamics in relationships。 the microagression bits were so interesting and eye opening。

As comfortable reads go, it went very nicely。 He sets up a relationship with lots and lots of imbalances and runs with it to see how it might work and the two lead characters (older woman with kids and responsible job, younger man with none of those things) are both very likeable。 The will they, won't they is neatly played, but then the how will this turn out is mildly optimistic but generally believable (well on the relationship front at least - on the woman with deputy head job not being awash As comfortable reads go, it went very nicely。 He sets up a relationship with lots and lots of imbalances and runs with it to see how it might work and the two lead characters (older woman with kids and responsible job, younger man with none of those things) are both very likeable。 The will they, won't they is neatly played, but then the how will this turn out is mildly optimistic but generally believable (well on the relationship front at least - on the woman with deputy head job not being awash in work at home as well as at school I found it harder to take, but given that wasn't supposed to be what the novel was about, letting him have that one and suspending belief was manageable)。 。。。more

Great book。 It would be superb if the author had actually thought about the ending before he started writing。。。

Does any writer do the angst of the middle classes in North London better than Hornby。 Here it's the story of Lucy Fairfax and her affair with a black 22 year old, twenty years younger than her。 First, it's the worry of what she should say to confirm her interest in him, but not so intensely that she might push him away。 Then it's the worry of the reaction of family and friends。 And, Joseph, the would-be lover is in a similar fix。 Fluently written, it's a delight。 Does any writer do the angst of the middle classes in North London better than Hornby。 Here it's the story of Lucy Fairfax and her affair with a black 22 year old, twenty years younger than her。 First, it's the worry of what she should say to confirm her interest in him, but not so intensely that she might push him away。 Then it's the worry of the reaction of family and friends。 And, Joseph, the would-be lover is in a similar fix。 Fluently written, it's a delight。 。。。more

Carefully observed, literate comedy of manners, sort of, set in and around London of very recent times。 Can a 40something divorced white single mom who's a schoolteacher find true love or at least contentment with a young black man who works at a butcher's shops and is a talented DJ? Decided to pick up this latest offering by Nick Hornby for some contemporary English fiction。 After all, Nick Hornby's books have a one in two chance of being made into a movie。 This is a story of an unlikely relationship between a twenty something black man, and a forty something white woman set in London during the Brexit vote。 No matter how nonsensical the relationship seems, the attraction constantly draws them back to one another。 How do they become a "normal" couple without the constant ju Decided to pick up this latest offering by Nick Hornby for some contemporary English fiction。 After all, Nick Hornby's books have a one in two chance of being made into a movie。 This is a story of an unlikely relationship between a twenty something black man, and a forty something white woman set in London during the Brexit vote。 No matter how nonsensical the relationship seems, the attraction constantly draws them back to one another。 How do they become a "normal" couple without the constant judgement of society? This book was not a disappointment in spite of the below four score on Goodreads。 It perhaps did not have characters that were sufficiently quirky to make them stand out as we know Hormby's characters can - although I kind of liked Lucy towards the end。 Hornby has a skill of bringing out the internal conversation to speak about awkward subjects。 This is to his credit。 Hard to see this being made into a movie, but sufficiently pleasant to read。 。。。more

Joseph a 22 year old working in a butchers shop, meets Lucy a 40 year old English teacher。 Worlds apart from uncommon ground, it’s a story of how they manage to make their relationship work despite societal norms and expectations we’re meant to abide by。 Personally I found this dull and flat to read。 The pace was slow and there was too much quick dialogue eating away at the better parts。

*yawn* In all honesty I couldn't finish this all the way。 It was a note, do not recommend。 *yawn* In all honesty I couldn't finish this all the way。 It was a note, do not recommend。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Nick Hornby is such a glorious writer。 This book is written in such a intricate way。 You really feel like you’re part of Lucy and Joseph’s relationship。 I learned so much more about Brexit, the pressure to do what your peers are doing and racism in the UK。 The political themes woven throughout this story were a stark reminder of just how much the world has gone through and how much it has changed since 2016。

This book started quite well for me, easy to read and I was interested in the characters。 Lucy and Joseph meet and with their age gap an interesting relationship begins。 What bugged me was Lucy has 2 children, both boys and to me were not convincing with the age portrayed。 I had no issue with Lucy and Joseph, I quite liked their relationship but her insecurities really annoyed me。 I understood them totally, the new relationship insecurities but it was irritating。 For me the worst part was the co This book started quite well for me, easy to read and I was interested in the characters。 Lucy and Joseph meet and with their age gap an interesting relationship begins。 What bugged me was Lucy has 2 children, both boys and to me were not convincing with the age portrayed。 I had no issue with Lucy and Joseph, I quite liked their relationship but her insecurities really annoyed me。 I understood them totally, the new relationship insecurities but it was irritating。 For me the worst part was the constant talk about Brexit, maybe I should have read this around the time it was published but it was just too much。 It had real potential but didn’t quite do it for me unfortunately。 。。。more

Whenever I'm in a reading slump, I just pick up a Nick Hornby book。 He is just the kind of author I like。 Funny, sarcastic, self-deprecating, and with just the right mix of high and low-brow references I can recognize。 Maybe it's because I'm of the same generation, and of the same general background, but Hornby always hits the spot for me, and this book was no exception。 Whenever I'm in a reading slump, I just pick up a Nick Hornby book。 He is just the kind of author I like。 Funny, sarcastic, self-deprecating, and with just the right mix of high and low-brow references I can recognize。 Maybe it's because I'm of the same generation, and of the same general background, but Hornby always hits the spot for me, and this book was no exception。 。。。more

3。5 rounded down to 3 stars。 I enjoyed it overall, but kept waiting for something big to happen or for some kind of climax to the whole storyline to be revealed。。。and it just never happened。 The story felt a bit flat and just felt like something was missing。
