Redeems itself somewhat in the last 3rd as things heat up and get interestingly twisty, finally。 But as I gave this series a second chance with book 2, I still found Bosch to be pretty dry and just plain hard to like。 I have similar issues with Jack Reacher and to some extent, Kinsey Millhone。 As a substitute for that, I'll take someone to root for, but I couldn't generate much of that here either besides the basic "he's going to solve this thing no matter what" drive, which I appreciate as a st Redeems itself somewhat in the last 3rd as things heat up and get interestingly twisty, finally。 But as I gave this series a second chance with book 2, I still found Bosch to be pretty dry and just plain hard to like。 I have similar issues with Jack Reacher and to some extent, Kinsey Millhone。 As a substitute for that, I'll take someone to root for, but I couldn't generate much of that here either besides the basic "he's going to solve this thing no matter what" drive, which I appreciate as a staple of this genre。There are enough hard boiled detectives that have that something more that appeals to me, though I'm read up on most of my favorites (Harry Hole, Elvis Cole, Myron Bolitar, Spenser, Marlowe, et al。)。 Give me their internal struggles, specific loyalties, self deprecation and snark they can't contain that lands them in more hot water。 In that vein and since I'm not finding it in Bosch at this point, I'm going to pick up Wallander where I left off。 Then perhaps some more Gamache, Wexford, Wimsey, Hawthorne and Oliver Stone before I sample even more。 There are a lot of options。 。。。more

Amazing twist in the end, and honestly, a twist on top of the twist。 I'm so glad I started reading these from the beginning。 There's a reason Connelly is so popular。 In what would be a regular police procedural he's created a true thrill ride。 Excellent book。 Amazing twist in the end, and honestly, a twist on top of the twist。 I'm so glad I started reading these from the beginning。 There's a reason Connelly is so popular。 In what would be a regular police procedural he's created a true thrill ride。 Excellent book。 。。。more

Connely me gusta, Harry Bosch me gusta, pero los casos sobre drogas me aburren, me interesan 0。

I liked the plot, which was complex enough to be engaging but not so challenging that the reader loses the threads。 It’s fun to read about LA and detective work before cell phones, and I wonder how the series will evolve with technology。 Mysteries and thrillers are not usually my thing, but I am dealing with a lot right now, so Bosch hits just the right escapist note for me at this moment。 I liked that a bit of Bosch’s background comes through, but I am already growing weary of his relationships I liked the plot, which was complex enough to be engaging but not so challenging that the reader loses the threads。 It’s fun to read about LA and detective work before cell phones, and I wonder how the series will evolve with technology。 Mysteries and thrillers are not usually my thing, but I am dealing with a lot right now, so Bosch hits just the right escapist note for me at this moment。 I liked that a bit of Bosch’s background comes through, but I am already growing weary of his relationships with women and his, “man all alone in the world,” shtick。 。。。more

Four murders, including two fellow police detectives, lead Harry Bosch to a drug smuggling operation on the Mexican border。Not as good a Bosch #1, but I'm still interested enough to read Bosch #3。 Four murders, including two fellow police detectives, lead Harry Bosch to a drug smuggling operation on the Mexican border。Not as good a Bosch #1, but I'm still interested enough to read Bosch #3。 。。。more

An LAPD narcotics officer is found dead, the powers that be want it shut down quick and declare it as a suicide because of concerns that he’d gone across to the other side in selling black ice, a designer drug。 Bosch isn’t so sure and is never one to follow authority, as he starts to dig into the case he finds that things aren’t stacking up and not all as it seems。 Can Bosch solve the case and save his career?Book two of the Harry Bosch series and it’s a rip roaring ending。

WOW!!!! Just…。 WOW!!! Michael Connelly is an excellent author! I really enjoyed this book。 I’ve read several of his books and he never disappoints。 His main characters are so believable and relatable。 I highly recommend this book。 It was written in the early ‘90’s so the technology used to solve crimes is different。 It’s really cool to think back to those days。

Connelly writes a top-notch detective story。 In this one Bosch is on the case of a cop gone bad who has holed up in a seedy motel and apparently killed himself。 But something feels off to Bosch, and he (against the wishes of department brass, who want it to go away quietly), follows a trail leading to a boarder town。 A local Mexican drug king pin has cooked up an ingenious scheme for smuggling Black Ice into LA。 And the dead cop was somehow mixed up in the scheme。 A daring raid by DEA and Mexica Connelly writes a top-notch detective story。 In this one Bosch is on the case of a cop gone bad who has holed up in a seedy motel and apparently killed himself。 But something feels off to Bosch, and he (against the wishes of department brass, who want it to go away quietly), follows a trail leading to a boarder town。 A local Mexican drug king pin has cooked up an ingenious scheme for smuggling Black Ice into LA。 And the dead cop was somehow mixed up in the scheme。 A daring raid by DEA and Mexican federal police that Bosch tags along for turns deadly but the kingpin escapes, and surprising plot twist ensues。 Bosch figures it all out and quietly ties up all loose ends in a satisfying conclusion。For some reason I’m mildly peeved by Bosch’s maverick “go it alone” style。 His tendency to rile up the brass who always seem shady and incompetent and operating in bad faith。 。。。more

I honestly think。, and hope as I work my way through the Harry Bosch series, that I will never give any less than 5 stars。 A second amazing read starring Hieronymus Bosch。 I don't know whether I would have been so engrossed in the characters unless I had watched the series, but Connelly is an amazing writer and I believe that I would have been just as invested if I had not watched it。 Bosch's past is very cleverly and slowly bought into every book without ramming it down your throat or without i I honestly think。, and hope as I work my way through the Harry Bosch series, that I will never give any less than 5 stars。 A second amazing read starring Hieronymus Bosch。 I don't know whether I would have been so engrossed in the characters unless I had watched the series, but Connelly is an amazing writer and I believe that I would have been just as invested if I had not watched it。 Bosch's past is very cleverly and slowly bought into every book without ramming it down your throat or without it encroaching on the main storyline。 I can't wait for the next read。 。。。more

Great book, read it very quickly。 There was a lot going on in this storyline that, at times, was hard to keep straight and a little unnecessary。

Audio version。 Quite a lot going on in this one。 A bit difficult to follow and quite the unrealistic redneck thrill ride - an insubordinate L。A。 cop running wild in Mexico, AWOL from post, shoots up the place and simply goes home at the end。 2。5 stars。

I am enjoying the Harry Bosch books。 Bosch is cool shit。 The books play out like the show。 (Even though these first few books are not a part of the show's storyline)。 I am enjoying the Harry Bosch books。 Bosch is cool shit。 The books play out like the show。 (Even though these first few books are not a part of the show's storyline)。 。。。more

Black Ice forms when the water on the road from a rain freezes。 It’s virtually unseeable, it’s deadly。 In this book it’s cocaine cut with black-tar heroine and dusted with PCP, and its deadly。 Harry Bosch is a seemingly inconsequential homicide detective in LA’s most inconsequential division—Hollywood, and for criminals, he’s deadly too, because when he gets the bit in his mouth he doesn’t let go。 And when you open this book and start reading you won’t be able to let go either。 4 stars which mea Black Ice forms when the water on the road from a rain freezes。 It’s virtually unseeable, it’s deadly。 In this book it’s cocaine cut with black-tar heroine and dusted with PCP, and its deadly。 Harry Bosch is a seemingly inconsequential homicide detective in LA’s most inconsequential division—Hollywood, and for criminals, he’s deadly too, because when he gets the bit in his mouth he doesn’t let go。 And when you open this book and start reading you won’t be able to let go either。 4 stars which means recommended reading。 。。。more

Excellent read after a rocky startIt starts off kind of uneven and off kilter, but it comes together smoothly and stays that way for most of the book。

Harry Bosch #2 - I am reading this series (and companion series) out of order and only in audio。 I pick up them up on Audible sales or Audible daily deals。 I've read more at the farther end than at the beginning, making the early ones a sort of prequel。 I enjoy them (except for one); the and they make good companions when walking, hiking, or indoor biking。In this one, Harry has been reassigned to Hollywood division from Robbery and Homicide。 It's Christmas and Harry is on call。 He's poured a gla Harry Bosch #2 - I am reading this series (and companion series) out of order and only in audio。 I pick up them up on Audible sales or Audible daily deals。 I've read more at the farther end than at the beginning, making the early ones a sort of prequel。 I enjoy them (except for one); the and they make good companions when walking, hiking, or indoor biking。In this one, Harry has been reassigned to Hollywood division from Robbery and Homicide。 It's Christmas and Harry is on call。 He's poured a glass of wine and is ready to start dinner when he hears a call about a murder in his district。 He wonders why he wasn't called and decides to find out。Since I know how Harry acts (although around book 20 Harry is a much more mature detective, in all ways), it is not surprising that he is soon up to his ears in a case he's been told he has no role。 He's pretty sure the dead man, identified as an undercover cop, did not commit suicide but was murdered。 No one wants that result but Harry digs in and uncovers a quite creative illusion。 What I like least about these early books is Harry's smoking and sleeping around。 He grows out of both as he ages over the years (and the author ages!)。 。。。more

I guess I'm fairly slow on the Michael Connelly following。 Always looked at his books but the American crime stuff doesn't usually grab me as much。 I read Harry Bosch #1 and it was better than I expected (3。5 stars), but I think this one has hooked me in。 Was better than the first and had an ending that I'd be surprised if most people could pick。 Really good story with lots of great subplots。 Being of a more mature age, this guy really appeals。 Has that real 80's (realise it was written in the 9 I guess I'm fairly slow on the Michael Connelly following。 Always looked at his books but the American crime stuff doesn't usually grab me as much。 I read Harry Bosch #1 and it was better than I expected (3。5 stars), but I think this one has hooked me in。 Was better than the first and had an ending that I'd be surprised if most people could pick。 Really good story with lots of great subplots。 Being of a more mature age, this guy really appeals。 Has that real 80's (realise it was written in the 90's) strut about him。 And isn't it good to read a novel where the major player isn't some massive unit with super sized muscles that kills half of the world's population in tracking down his prey。 Here we have a loner that chain smokes, is down on his luck, is largely unpopular but otherwise ends up doing good (and they still don't like him much)。 Really looking forward to continuing the Harry Bosch story。 。。。more

This is a good but not a great Harry Bosch book。 It’s fairly early in his career and no mention of his wife or daughter。 It has a reasonably good twist in the story and as usual Harry is at odds with the LAPD。

A big step up from the first outing, although I still find myself in the uncomfortable position of not liking the Bosch novels quite as much as I want to。 If the improvement arc continues this is a problem that should resolve itself。 The period (late eighties, I believe, possibly early nineties) is in the awkward twilight zone just before the dawn of modern instant communication - lots of pagers and payphones and typewriters。 The US/Mexican and Anglo/Hispanic racial politics jarred too - the era A big step up from the first outing, although I still find myself in the uncomfortable position of not liking the Bosch novels quite as much as I want to。 If the improvement arc continues this is a problem that should resolve itself。 The period (late eighties, I believe, possibly early nineties) is in the awkward twilight zone just before the dawn of modern instant communication - lots of pagers and payphones and typewriters。 The US/Mexican and Anglo/Hispanic racial politics jarred too - the era not the author's issue in both cases。 。。。more

Bosch book 2The follow up to the first novel was good, but like all these books, the total amount of killing these detectives engage in is so ridiculous。 Every bad guy dies? Seems way too easy。 I guess that is what sells though。

Completely adequate for what I wanted - a decent crime novel。 I think the latter third stretched the limits of my suspension of disbelief, but I enjoyed it for what it was。 I think I shall take a break from this series for a bit, but I'll probably return。 Completely adequate for what I wanted - a decent crime novel。 I think the latter third stretched the limits of my suspension of disbelief, but I enjoyed it for what it was。 I think I shall take a break from this series for a bit, but I'll probably return。 。。。more
