Now terrified she needs their help, but when one lie leads to another, things start to snowball。 Where will it all end? What happened that night?!That Night was quite a stressful read, and at some points I was peeking through my fingers whilst reading, as things rapidly went from bad to worse! It was so well written in that the tension was palpable, the relationships intense, and the dread in the pit of my stomach felt sour! You know that it's going to all unravel and implode, but don't quite know how! I could feel the threat of the police closing in on the family! Plus there were a few great twists which caught me off-guard!Gillian McAllister has written a fabulous moral dilemma here, and at the beginning I was scathing, but as I read on, I kept thinking, but what would I do? We're slowly drip fed snippets of information, shedding different light on events and characters, as the lies began to pile up, and the betrayal and thoughts of betrayal creep in。The story flits from the past to the present, and also takes place across several locations; the villa in Verona, the vets practice which they all own, an office in Birmingham, court and in Frannie's kitchen where the siblings would gather to drink wine。 We get POVs from the siblings, and also from Joe's wife Lydia, who feels locked out of their claustrophobic relationship。 It was really well done, and flowed well for me。The characters were on the whole an extremely unlikeable bunch! The siblings were flawed, and damaged from a childhood trauma, strangely inseparable and devoted to each other。 Joe, the hot headed, over protective brother。 Frannie, the fun, immature single mother。 Cathy, the cool, calm, detached sister。 But even though they were mostly unlikeable, I still felt for them as they tried to deal with the life changing decisions they made in the stifling heat of Verona。 As they battled with their conscience, they realised that they would have to live with the consequences of their actions for the rest of their lives, if they got away with it。。。As time passed, it became increasingly obvious that what happened was affecting them all in different ways, whether it be mentally, emotionally or physically。 Doubts crept in。 Paranoia made them lash out。Then there was their parents。。 whose reaction to a tragedy damaged their children irreparably。 Lydia I could relate to a little。 It must have been awful to have felt left out of everything, to feel that your husband constantly put his siblings before you, especially after what she had been through。I wouldn't say I loved reading this, it was tense and stressful, but I equally I did kind of enjoy it, and couldn't stop turning the pages to see what would become of the Plants, to discover how their lies caught up with them, and to find out how far they would go for each other! If you're looking for an unsettling, character driven thriller, with twists, betrayals and secrets, then I would recommend this!🚗🚗🚗🚗Published July 8th 2021Many thanks to NetGalley Uk and Penguin Michael Joseph UK for the ARC, in exchange for an honest review! 。。。more

I love all of Gillian McAllister's books so I had huge expectations for this one。 Although it was more of a slow starter for me than her previous books, once I settled into the story I really did enjoy it。 The three siblings, Cathy, Jack and Frannie have their lives turned upside down by a single incident that happened one night in Verona whilst they were on holiday。 What happened next was a life changing series of events, lies, deceptions and fear for every one of them。 One lie leads to another I love all of Gillian McAllister's books so I had huge expectations for this one。 Although it was more of a slow starter for me than her previous books, once I settled into the story I really did enjoy it。 The three siblings, Cathy, Jack and Frannie have their lives turned upside down by a single incident that happened one night in Verona whilst they were on holiday。 What happened next was a life changing series of events, lies, deceptions and fear for every one of them。 One lie leads to another until things are so completely out of control that there doesn't seem to be any positive outcome for any of them。 It all started with Frannie whose singular act of causing a man's death brought her brother and sister into her web of deceit and the ripples from that night just kept spreading wider and wider。 There were numerous twists and surprises to keep the pages turning and an outcome I wasn't expecting。 None of he characters was very likeable so I didn't feel any sense of sympathy when their own selfish actions brought about their further woes。 It was fascinating, though, to see just how it would all turn out。 Gillian writes beautifully and the only thing spoiling that writing for me was the amount of what I consider to be unnecessary swearing。 I get it when a character is angry or frustrated but it seemed to be incessant even in just everyday conversation which did grate on me。 It may be just a personal thing but it does lose one star from my rating because of this 。 Otherwise another thrilling, page turning winner from this author。 My thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for an advance copy of the book in exchange for my honest review。 。。。more

An absorbing, twisting escapist read。Set in Verona, Italy, and Birmingham, the plot flits between time before and after a crime was committed。 The author excels in tales which put you right in the action whilst questioning what you would do yourself。 A classic, thrilling dilemma novel from one of the UK’s best writers in the genre。 A recommended read。 Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for my ARC in exchange for my honest review。

The idea behind this story is great and really makes you wonder what you (the reader) would do in the same circumstances。 The book starts off very strongly and really keeps you gripped。 I did find though that the pace then really tailed off and it was less of a gripping page turner than I expected - more of a slow burn。 It is still a good book and well written。 Unfortunately I didn’t like a couple of the characters and found their behaviour and decisions annoying。 Overall I rated this an average The idea behind this story is great and really makes you wonder what you (the reader) would do in the same circumstances。 The book starts off very strongly and really keeps you gripped。 I did find though that the pace then really tailed off and it was less of a gripping page turner than I expected - more of a slow burn。 It is still a good book and well written。 Unfortunately I didn’t like a couple of the characters and found their behaviour and decisions annoying。 Overall I rated this an average read which is well worth trying but it didn’t massively excite me once the pace slowed down。 I rated it a strong 3。5 stars but just not quite reaching a full 4 stars。 。。。more

That Night shows that, sometimes, family bonds will test you to the limit…Our story begins in Verona, where the three surviving Plant siblings were on holiday。 Cathy is woken by a frantic call from her younger sister, Frannie, asking for help。 She has been involved in an accident, a man is dead…and it’s someone they were seen arguing with earlier in the day。 Most people would talk sense into their relative, call an ambulance and support them with whatever the consequences were。 Cathy and her bro That Night shows that, sometimes, family bonds will test you to the limit…Our story begins in Verona, where the three surviving Plant siblings were on holiday。 Cathy is woken by a frantic call from her younger sister, Frannie, asking for help。 She has been involved in an accident, a man is dead…and it’s someone they were seen arguing with earlier in the day。 Most people would talk sense into their relative, call an ambulance and support them with whatever the consequences were。 Cathy and her brother, Joe, are not most people。 They help to bury the body, and what we then see is how this one fateful night impacts on them。 The narrative is split into then and now sections。 While it would be easy to give details away, the success of this depends on you learning key information as it is revealed。 Things are - perhaps we should expect this - not what they appear to be, and as we learn more about the Plant family we come to understand why they are in the situation they are in。A genuinely entertaining read, even if the situation is one I cannot imagine getting into。 。。。more

if you bend the rules enough - partly because it's the second book of hers that I have read。 But mostly because the first was the utterly fabulous How to Disappear, which was one of my top five books of last year。This of course meant that a request to Netgalley was made almost as soon as her latest book became available, and also that I started reading it just as soon as I possibly could。 But it also meant that I felt what I can best describe as being slightly nervous。 Could Gillian McAllister really surpass the amazing heights of her previous book? The short answer is: not quite。 But she's made a darned fine effort。The book starts with a gripping and eye-opening scene。 It's late at night during Cathy's holiday in Verona when she gets a panicked phone call from her younger sister Frannie, begging for her help。 She and her brother Joe arrive to find Frannie covered in blood, her car damaged and the body of a dead man lying at her feet 。。。 The family are a particularly close one, who live and work together as well as holidaying together。 Plus, Frannie is a single mum and fears for her young son if she is sent to prison。 So, they decide to bury the body 。。。The book continues, in alternate chapters, to describe the rest of that night and the subsequent days in Italy, and later events in Birmingham the following winter。 The scenes are perfectly described so that the heat of Verona starts to feel as oppressive as the characters' own guilt, whilst the rain, snow and bitter cold of February makes Birmingham feel like the most miserable place in the world。 And, even though the book maintains a fast pace, there is just enough fine detail added。 A description of a pair of dusty flip-flops。 A plate of custard cream biscuits in an office。 The treatment given by a vet to a sick dog。 All of these conspire to draw you right into the character's world, their thoughts, their minds。Dealing with the aftermath of committing a crime isn't something that any of them know how to do。 And slowly, but surely, their secrets start to unravel。 More people overhear things。 More lies are exposed。 And by this point I was so well and truly drawn in that I was almost continually asking two sets of questions: "well if that was me, and my family, would I do the same thing?" and "so what else have we been told that isn't true?"You probably sense from my earlier comments that there's a 'but' coming。 There is。 But not yet。My only rational criticisms of the book are so small and pernickety that they're hardly even worth mentioning。 There is the point that Frannie's brother is called Joe and her young baby is called Paul。 For several of the early chapters I had it in my head that it was the other way round。 Perhaps it's down to me having a six-year-old nephew called Joe, whilst the youngest Paul I know is in his 40s, but maybe it would have helped to have given the baby a name that's more common in young boys。 There's also the point that the the ARC supplied included quite a number of formatting errors。 I'm sure these will be corrected before the book goes on sale, and I know that to criticise anything about the presentation of an advance copy of a book, when it's been given to me free of charge makes me sound like a spoiled brat。 But my problem was when the same line includes speeches from more than one character。 It wasn't immediately obvious who was saying what to whom。 And I have to say that this made the book harder to read than it should have been。But really, as far as criticisms go, that's about it。And yet, for all of that, there was something missing for me。 That final extra piece of connection that was there so strongly in How to Disappear。 The best I can think is that it's the questions asked of the readers that make the difference。 In How to Disappear, they almost always decide to make the right decision, even if it's by no means the easy one。 Which means that the reader supports them all the way。But, without wanting to give away any more spoilers than I probably already have, that isn't quite the case here。 To feel the same way about That Night, you have to be happy that a character has, quite literally, got away with murder。 It's not impossible for a book to make me feel that way, because Daphne du Maurier's Rebecca managed it。 Which might be why it's possibly my single favourite book of all time。 However - and even though it's both captivating and memorable, and I'd wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone - That Night hasn't quite managed to pull off the same trick。I can understand everything the characters have done, and continue to do。 I can tell myself that the outcome was for the best。 But ultimately, I can't agree with it。 And that, I think is the problem。My thanks to Netgalley, the author and Penguin Books for an e-ARC of this book, which I have reviewed voluntarily and honestly。 I will post my review on Goodreads now and on Amazon on publication day。 。。。more

Edit : forgot to Thank Netgalley for a copy of That night in exchange for a honest review。 I appear to be on a trend of reading books I don't particularly like。 I've lost count of how many books in 2021 that I've three star or below。This pains me, it really does。I love Gillian's books, I've read all her previous books and loved them all but this one just fell short for me。 The main reason being that I just didn't care about the characters, I found I kept getting Cathy and Frannie mixed up at the Edit : forgot to Thank Netgalley for a copy of That night in exchange for a honest review。 I appear to be on a trend of reading books I don't particularly like。 I've lost count of how many books in 2021 that I've three star or below。This pains me, it really does。I love Gillian's books, I've read all her previous books and loved them all but this one just fell short for me。 The main reason being that I just didn't care about the characters, I found I kept getting Cathy and Frannie mixed up at the start of the book and I didn't full grasp who has killed Will till the middle portion of the book because I kept getting them mixed up ( this maybe more down to me than Gillian writing)I was bored for the first half but once we reached the 50% mark with more of the trial and the breakdown of the Plant family work life dynamics I found myself getting more and more into the story。 I'm not sure about my feelings for the ending and the result of the murder trial, I didn't love it nore hate it, however I did feel the book was ended on the right note and I wasn't left disappointed or more importantly left 'wanting'It ended resolved and I am glad for that。Over all its worth a read but I'm sad to say it's not Gillians best work。3 stars from me。 Sorry Gillian, I know you read these reviews。 Looking forwards to your next novel。 。。。more

Frannie, Joe and Cathy are over the top close with each other。 They work together in the family’s veterinary practice, live next door to each other, and holiday together in the Italian villa which they own。 They would do anything for each other。 Now I have to say here, I did not like any of them and could understand how Joe’s wife felt, sitting on the outside of this trio。They were on holiday in Italy when a phone from Cathy sent the siblings running to her side, in the middle of the night。 She Frannie, Joe and Cathy are over the top close with each other。 They work together in the family’s veterinary practice, live next door to each other, and holiday together in the Italian villa which they own。 They would do anything for each other。 Now I have to say here, I did not like any of them and could understand how Joe’s wife felt, sitting on the outside of this trio。They were on holiday in Italy when a phone from Cathy sent the siblings running to her side, in the middle of the night。 She had run a man over, and he was dead。 Cathy was near hysterical, terrified that she would go to prison and not be allowed to see her young son。 A plan was made-up, to cover up the accident and dispose of the body。 The story is told by the siblings, as news of the missing man hits the town。Now saying that I do not like the siblings is one thing, feeling compelled to read just how far these three will go is another。 I liked how the story developed with the involvement of the police and how they were creating a picture。 The story jumps between the police and the siblings as more about the man comes to light。To be a good liar you have to have a good memory but when there are three people not telling the truth is becomes complicated。 I liked the pace of this story as it was developing at two speeds, the steady investigation and the paranoia which was rapidly setting in between the siblings。I was impressed at the twists and turns throughout。 Excellent storyline。I wish to thank the publisher and Net Galley for an e-copy of this book, which I have reviewed honestly。 。。。more

I’ve read this authors books before and always enjoyed them but I think this one is definitely a cut above the rest! That Night is another winner from Gillian McAllister, I have read all her other books and love them and this one is joining them。Joe, Cathy and Frannie are siblings, they work together, live in three separate houses next to each other so there is nothing they won’t do for each other。 Or is there? It’s July and the three of them and Frannie’s son, Paul, have gone to their villa in Verona。 One night Joe and Cathy get a call from Frannie saying she’s had a car accident and killed a man。 As the writ That Night is another winner from Gillian McAllister, I have read all her other books and love them and this one is joining them。Joe, Cathy and Frannie are siblings, they work together, live in three separate houses next to each other so there is nothing they won’t do for each other。 Or is there?
