Summary

TALES FROM THE INNER CITY is a collection of incredibly original stories, rich with feeling, strangely moving, almost numinous。 And when the reader comes to the artwork, it's like walking into an amazing room, and then throwing open a curtain to see a brilliant scene that makes you understand and appreciate everything you've encountered in a deeper way。

I really liked the concept of this book - each chapter was a short story focusing on an animal and how they exist in this surreal human city。 The artwork in this book is superb。 I thought some of the stories were great where I paused and thought about it / discussed it and some were just pretty words without any substance。 Overall enjoyable and fun to read。

These are lovely magical stories and illustrations of animals interacting with people in cities, Shaun Tan is the master of the unexpected and a brilliant artist。The cover is a boy holding a moon fish。 One fishes for these extraordinary creatures by sitting on the top of a tall building in the moonlight, holding fishing lines attached to balloons。 Unfortunately, moon fish are not meant to live in our world。My very favorite was the story of the bears which lawyered up and sued humans for torture, These are lovely magical stories and illustrations of animals interacting with people in cities, Shaun Tan is the master of the unexpected and a brilliant artist。The cover is a boy holding a moon fish。 One fishes for these extraordinary creatures by sitting on the top of a tall building in the moonlight, holding fishing lines attached to balloons。 Unfortunately, moon fish are not meant to live in our world。My very favorite was the story of the bears which lawyered up and sued humans for torture, property theft and imprisonment。 When there was no defense for the charges, the humans 。。。 wellHighly recommended, but I’m not sure what category I’d put it into – illustrated stories, I suppose。 My library has this listed as another YA book, but so many of the stories spoke to my adult heart。 。。。more

At first, I really wasn't thrilled about how this collection was packaged。 To have the table of contents represented by drawings of animals felt, to me, a little cheap and formulaic。 Now, having read the collection, I do think it's intuitive in how it guides you to the stories you hold dear, but I still think it would feel like a tighter collection if the absurdist qualities of the text were made more apparent because, really, that's where this book shines。I think it first hit me with the story At first, I really wasn't thrilled about how this collection was packaged。 To have the table of contents represented by drawings of animals felt, to me, a little cheap and formulaic。 Now, having read the collection, I do think it's intuitive in how it guides you to the stories you hold dear, but I still think it would feel like a tighter collection if the absurdist qualities of the text were made more apparent because, really, that's where this book shines。I think it first hit me with the story on snails。 Only a paragraph, but I think a perfect amuse-bouche of the collection as a whole: touching, provoking, and, of course, absurd。 From this point on, there really are a lot of winners in this collection—notably pig, lungfish, tiger, and butterfly—and it does just enough to provide a sense of dimensionality that it works as a collection。My one sore point (apart from the design gripe) is that I felt the writing could have been more impactful。 I just feel as if some of the beauty of each story could have been amplified to cement the narrative。Overall though, definitely something here for thought。 。。。more

Weird, wonderful, fantastical, ridiculous, beautiful, humbling。 A book that I’ll carry with me for a long time as it’s exploration of mankind’s relationship was truly unique and thought provoking。

täitsa umbropsu haarasin selle raamatu raamatukogust kaasa, sest tundus, et kenad pildid, ja lihtsalt。。。 ta oli sellel ainsal riiulil, kust sai ise midagi võtta, ja see riiul oli juba üsna hõredaks jäänud。 defitsiit!aga oh, mis leid。need pildid on tõesti absoluutselt võrratud。juttude osas olin ette kõhklev, sest esiteks pole ma pärast varajase lapseea Seton-Thompsoni- ja Teofrastuse-traumasid eriline loomalugude sõber, ja teiseks pole lühijutt ka üldse minu stiihia。 aga kohe esimese jutu esimest täitsa umbropsu haarasin selle raamatu raamatukogust kaasa, sest tundus, et kenad pildid, ja lihtsalt。。。 ta oli sellel ainsal riiulil, kust sai ise midagi võtta, ja see riiul oli juba üsna hõredaks jäänud。 defitsiit!aga oh, mis leid。need pildid on tõesti absoluutselt võrratud。juttude osas olin ette kõhklev, sest esiteks pole ma pärast varajase lapseea Seton-Thompsoni- ja Teofrastuse-traumasid eriline loomalugude sõber, ja teiseks pole lühijutt ka üldse minu stiihia。 aga kohe esimese jutu esimestest ridadest olin konksu otsas: "Crocodiles live on the eighty-seventh floor。 And very comfortably, too。 Plenty of filtered water, mud, swamp grass, climate control, fresh meat delivered twice a week, big long walls of uninterrupted glass, along which to follow the sun all day, slowly moving from east to west; such luxurious reptilian basking would never be possible on ground level。 Did I mention the spectacular view of financial district in all directions?" jah, ja nii ta läheb。 krokodillidel on küll liftinupu kõrval kirjas, et korrus 87: krokodillid, aga kõik eeldavad, et ju see on moebränd või kindlustus- või reklaamifirma。 ainult aknapesija teab, et nad seal on, ja teda ei usu keegi。sellised linnaloomade lood on need kõik, mõnedel läheb inimeste kõrval paremini ja mõnel kehvemini, aga kõigil neil on mingid oma asjad ajada, keegi ei ela siin meie rõõmuks。 päris hea nihe on sees iga kord。 ja kas ma neid pilte mainisin? oo, seda teopilti ma tahaks endale koju seinale!kõige rohkem kõnetas mind lugu karudest, kes palkasid advokaadid ja kaebasid inimkonna kohtusse。 hästi see nende jaoks muidugi ei lõppenud。 aga ikkagi。 。。。more

Secondary: General fictionLots of short stories representing humans as animals, accompanied by beautiful paintings。 A bit surreal but very fun。Big fan of this book。 A beautiful edition and a joy to read。(For keen readers, a bit cryptic)

One of the most beautiful books ever read and looked at。 What is more meaningful, the words or Tans imagery? I'd say: both support each other to sheer spiritual and universal meanings。 They healed a part of me, they made my home city and urban uglyness a bit more whole again, brought beauty back to where it belongs。。。 and keeps me floating one inch above the ground from now on。 Tan will always stay my favorite illustrator because he paints STORIES, not things。 The way he writes is just how he pa One of the most beautiful books ever read and looked at。 What is more meaningful, the words or Tans imagery? Beautiful illustrations, beautiful stories of animals and humans in the city。Crocodile - 4 starsCrocodiles live on the 87th floor, and no one really knows or cares。 And neither do the crocodiles: they've been here before, and they'll be here after。Butterfly - 3 starsA group (herd? collective?) of butterflies arrives in the city, momentarily stopping everyone with awe at their beauty and fragility。 Beautiful accompanying illustration。Dog - 2 starsA poem about dogs and humans being there for each Beautiful illustrations, beautiful stories of animals and humans in the city。Crocodile - 4 starsCrocodiles live on the 87th floor, and no one really knows or cares。 And neither do the crocodiles: they've been here before, and they'll be here after。Butterfly - 3 starsA group (herd? collective?) of butterflies arrives in the city, momentarily stopping everyone with awe at their beauty and fragility。 Beautiful accompanying illustration。Dog - 2 starsA poem about dogs and humans being there for each other。 Lots of similar illustrations with this one that don't add much。Snail - 5 stars(Am I biased because I love snails? Because the illustration is something I want to frame? Because "leaving us all alone with our small ideas about love" is a beautiful, poignant and heartbreaking closing line?)Shark - 4 starsThe monster shark has finally been caught, but when it's time to gut it, babies and babies and babies and babies fall out。 The best human/nature stories leave you feeling slimy and unsettled-sad。 (And another great illustration that I'd frame!)Cat - 4 starsCats are going missing, and a family's cat has died。 A beautiful reminder of what cats add to our lives。Horse - 3 starsThe ghosts of the horses who used to roam free, whom we broke to build our cities, remain。Pig - 5 starsEvery house has a pig that they keep in the back until it finishes disappearing, piece by piece。 Melancholy and hopeful simultaneously。Fish - 5 starsThe fish have all moved up into the sky, but that doesn't mean people still don't fish。 Another great example of a human/nature story that leaves you sad and unmoored。Rhino - 5 starsThe rhino is on the freeway again。 Short, sad, punchy。 Owl - 3 starsOwls are now in charge of healing (I think?)。Frog - 2 starsIn the midst of a meeting, all the board members turn into frogs。 One of the few stories in the collection that left me a little cold。Sheep - 2 starsAnd this is the other one。Hippo - 3 starsA boy genius dreams of hippos: their power, their presence, their simple physicality。Lungfish - 5 starsLungfish are rescued, and found to have human faces。 Soon enough, quick enough, they grow and evolve and become disappointed in our lack of potential。 Bitter。Orca - 5 starsA mother has been separated from her child。 Short and effective。Tiger - 4 starsThe tiger is always stalking you - are you willing to be different in order to dissuade it?Parrot - 2 starsI think if I had a parrot I'd like this one better。Bear - 5 starsThe bears have had enough, and sue the human race。 Tan excels at melancholy, inevitable stories that are somehow still achingly beautiful and human。Hawk - 3 starsA hawk is in the airport。Fox - 3 starsThe fox is active at night while you sleep。Pigeon - 2 starsPigeons take a building as their nest。 Something about investments and humans。。。?Bee - 4 starsThe Katayama's have been taking care of a tree for years, and it's finally ready to bloom。 Beautiful sense of wonder and a beautiful illustration。Yak - 3 starsThe yak walks the streets every afternoon。Human - 4 starsWe humans are animals too, curious and harsh and cruel and lonely。 。。。more

Shaun Tan's imagination is superb。 This is a book of short stories, essentially。 Each chapter is a story of a different animal that sits in the most disjointed space of storytelling I have come across。 The chapters each come with an image of a painting that visualises the ideas in the strange universe of Tan。 The paintings are immaculate, both as narrative and craft, using line, colour and structure brilliantly to complement the writing。It's near impossible to describe how this all plays out as Shaun Tan's imagination is superb。 This is a book of short stories, essentially。 Each chapter is a story of a different animal that sits in the most disjointed space of storytelling I have come across。 The chapters each come with an image of a painting that visualises the ideas in the strange universe of Tan。 The paintings are immaculate, both as narrative and craft, using line, colour and structure brilliantly to complement the writing。It's near impossible to describe how this all plays out as an experience, other than it is a treat both in reading and visual。 Fish that fly, bears with lawyers, pigeons doing economics, a yak in the snow, and dogs that wait。。。the stories are all different and each one opens a new world in just a few short pages。 The writing and art are impeccable, and the analysis of the modern human condition through the eyes of uncanny animals is beautifully executed。 。。。more

Bizarrely these stories seemed to diminish in power as a collection。 Maybe individually if you read them over a few months or year it'd be different。 I love Shaun Tan's work normally, but got a little bored of some of the stories。 And some of the art。 I loved the tiger art。 Others I just didn't really care about。 And his writing style is so unique that it was hard to differentiate between the different animals by the end。 Bizarrely these stories seemed to diminish in power as a collection。 Maybe individually if you read them over a few months or year it'd be different。 I love Shaun Tan's work normally, but got a little bored of some of the stories。 And some of the art。 I loved the tiger art。 Others I just didn't really care about。 And his writing style is so unique that it was hard to differentiate between the different animals by the end。 。。。more
