Summary

It's November 1991。 George H。 W。 Bush is in the White House, Nirvana's in the tape deck, and movie-obsessed college student Charlie Jordan is in a car with a man who might be a serial killer。

Josh Baxter, the man behind the wheel, is a virtual stranger to Charlie。 They met at the campus ride board, each looking to share the long drive home to Ohio。 Both have good reasons for wanting to get away。 For Charlie, it's guilt and grief over the murder of her best friend, who became the third victim of the man known as the Campus Killer。 For Josh, it's to help care for his sick father。 Or so he says。 Like the Hitchcock heroine she's named after, Charlie has her doubts。 There's something suspicious about Josh, from the holes in his story about his father to how he doesn't seem to want Charlie to see inside the car's trunk。 As they travel an empty highway in the dead of night, an increasingly worried Charlie begins to think she's sharing a car with the Campus Killer。 Is Josh truly dangerous? Or is Charlie's suspicion merely a figment of her movie-fueled imagination?

What follows is a game of cat-and-mouse played out on night-shrouded roads and in neon-lit parking lots, during an age when the only call for help can be made on a pay phone and in a place where there's nowhere to run。 In order to win, Charlie must do one thing--survive the night。

I love old movies especially Hitchcock and so this book really spoke to me in that sense :-) also having been a middle schooler/high school in the 90s I also appreciate a lot of the music and the conversation on the long ride : Ok so I love Riley Sager’s thrillers。。Thanks to a recent Facebook post I realized I pre-ordered and got Home before Dark exactly a year ago this week :-) So if this is a new summer tradition I say please keep it up!! while I loved that one I also really enjoyed this book! Haha 😂 There were several surprises and I I enjoyed the twist midway through at the diner :-) but my absolute favorite part is the very last chapter! My theater major brain absolutely loved that and the way it was wrapped up。 I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a great thriller with chills and surprises :-) in fact I’ve already ordered two copies to give to two of my friends❤️ 。。。more

Riley Sager has done it again。 He has the dark, twisted mind of a genius, all rolled in with a master storyteller。 And he has woven another wild ride of a tale。 I’m always a big fan of unreliable narrators- in fact, the more unreliable, the better。 Much of this book left me questioning who was reliable and who wasn’t, and which storylines were “movie reels” and figments of Charlie’s imagination, and which were just seriously creepy things happening。 Not until the very end was I sure what happene Riley Sager has done it again。 He has the dark, twisted mind of a genius, all rolled in with a master storyteller。 And he has woven another wild ride of a tale。 I’m always a big fan of unreliable narrators- in fact, the more unreliable, the better。 Much of this book left me questioning who was reliable and who wasn’t, and which storylines were “movie reels” and figments of Charlie’s imagination, and which were just seriously creepy things happening。 Not until the very end was I sure what happened - and honestly, I might reread the last few chapters tomorrow again to be sure what I am thinking happened really IS what happened。 Suspenseful, Hitchcockian, twisty, twisted, unpredictable, and unrelenting。 I flinched more than once, held my breath, and flipped pages faster than necessary to see what was next。 Another 5-star thriller, and another not to be missed。 Just prepare to be unprepared。 。。。more

I'm just tired of the unreliable narrator trope and a lot of this plot seemed useless, but I can't explain why without spoiling。 At least this was set in 1991, a year I'm particularly sentimental about。Charley is a movie fanatic and film student with a gorgeous, athletic, math major boyfriend。 From the outside, it seems like she's leading a perfect life。 Then we learn she lost both her parents in a car accident 4 years ago, and her roommate and BFF Maddie has just been murdered by the campus ser I'm just tired of the unreliable narrator trope and a lot of this plot seemed useless, but I can't explain why without spoiling。 At least this was set in 1991, a year I'm particularly sentimental about。Charley is a movie fanatic and film student with a gorgeous, athletic, math major boyfriend。 From the outside, it seems like she's leading a perfect life。 Then we learn she lost both her parents in a car accident 4 years ago, and her roommate and BFF Maddie has just been murdered by the campus serial killer! On top of that, Charley suffers from a form of psychosis with very realistic hallucinations。 She can't always tell what's real or how long her episodes go on。What a contrived convenient setup for this book!Anyway, Maddie's murder has pushed her delicate mental state to the edge。 She's decided to quit school and her boyfriend to go stay with her grandmother in Ohio。 She goes to the ol' college bulletin board and finds an ad from someone willing to give a ride and split the gas。 (I don't know if it's still a thing, but those tear-off flyer bulletin boards were real, and people really did catch long-distance rides with total strangers that way。 Sketchy af。)Anyhoo, the driver turns out to be a movie-star gorgeous, slightly older guy。 Given that Charley just dumped Robbie before this road trip, she's not in the best frame of mind to be cooped up for hours overnight with a stranger, no matter how hot he is。 Still, she gets in the car and that's when。。。 "things take a detour。"CUE THE DRAMATIC MUSIC!Now, I don't mind telling you I loved The Girl on the Train。 That book was well-written, cleverly plotted, structured with a 3-way narrative, and most of all, the unreliable narrator thing was new (at least, it was new to me。) By now I feel like I've read countless mystery/ thrillers that have only imitated but never duplicated the original。 I can lump this one in with them。 Survive the Night, what a poser。 。。。more

Sincerely one of the worst books I’ve ever read, it just keeps getting more and more ridiculous/ludicrous。 Did the author receive a head injury recently? I must wonder。 I’m about 80% done and the only reason I might actually finish it is the same reason you crane your neck at a car wreck, some part of me wants to see how bad it will get。

I am a huge RS fan and was so excited for this book, so excited in fact that I started it (via audible) wayyyy before my physical book arrived from Book of the Month。 The premise of the boom was great, I enjoyed the characters, but execution of the storyline could’ve been better。 It jumped here and there and I still have unanswered questions。 I’ll probably just leave it to my imagination to figure it out。

Riley sager gets the same person different font award for making all of his main characters using the same base and then just adding different toppings。 Jokes aside I loved this book, yes the MC being a “not like other girls” type is annoying but she’s not a pick me girl so there’s that at least。 Survive the night feels like a good ole classic 80s/90s slasher film and I love that ! I don’t even know how many stars to give this but I am screaming and not in a good way。 This book really frustrated me。 It was definitely a quick read but Riley seems to only have one trick and he just leans on it heavily and abandons the desire for well developed plot。 He also contradicts himself so many times in this book and it felt way too obvious that his feelings are hurt none of his books have been adapted for film yet。 /rant。

I’ve just finished reading Survive The Night and I’m still trying to wrap my head around the mixed feelings I have。 Hate this book? No。 Love it? No。 Love it? Before long, she’s convinced he is the Campus Killer, and Charlie is in for a wild ride。The book kept me turning the pages because I wanted to learn the outcome。 However, Charlie lives her life in the fantasy world of movies, so it’s hard to determine what’s real and what isn’t。 She makes several stupid mistakes, beginning with accepting a ride from a total stranger。 Her poor decisions were based largely because of her guilt over Maddy’s death。As I got further into the story, it wasn’t hard to figure out the killer’s identity, although the author did throw in several twists to keep readers guessing。 A plus for that。 But overall, I’m left with a somewhat dissatisfied feeling。 Again, I don’t hate it, but I don’t love it。 I might consider reading this author again, but from what I read with this one, the books don’t merit the big price tag。 My only consolation is I received an ARC。 Thank you Net Galley and Penguin Books for the copy。 。。。more

This is my first time reading Riley Sager and he can really write a story。 It captivated me from the first page。I loved the writing but I may not like the story itself。 It was certainly unbelievable but the writer could write whatever he wanted。 It was an adrenaline rush during the last 30%of the book。 I certainly didn't see the twists, they made the story more suspenseful。I would love to read the author's other books and see what other insane stories that he had come up with。 This is my first time reading Riley Sager and he can really write a story。 It captivated me from the first page。I loved the writing but I may not like the story itself。 It was certainly unbelievable but the writer could write whatever he wanted。 It was an adrenaline rush during the last 30%of the book。 I certainly didn't see the twists, they made the story more suspenseful。I would love to read the author's other books and see what other insane stories that he had come up with。 。。。more

This story reminded me of those horror movies where an average person all of a sudden gets a burst of adrenaline and believes that they can kill the bad guy。 Charlie flip flopped between fight and flight more than I could count and it started getting irritating。 She constantly debated her desire to live, until finally I gave up on her。 If she wanted to stay and fight and die trying, be my guest。 However, in true Riley Sager form, there is so much more to the story and once you get over the hump This story reminded me of those horror movies where an average person all of a sudden gets a burst of adrenaline and believes that they can kill the bad guy。 Charlie flip flopped between fight and flight more than I could count and it started getting irritating。 She constantly debated her desire to live, until finally I gave up on her。 If she wanted to stay and fight and die trying, be my guest。 However, in true Riley Sager form, there is so much more to the story and once you get over the hump of Charlie’s frustrating indecision, the last 80% of the book was pure action。 Nothing is what it seems and the true motivations between Charlie and Josh’s decisions come to light in the most delightful way。 。。。more

I have read the majority of RS’s books and this one is probably my favorite! I couldn’t put it down and read it pretty much in one sitting。After the murder of her close friend Maddy, Charlie decides to drop out of school。 She accepts an offer from a campus message board for a stranger to take her home。This is one car ride none of us will soon forget。 Set over the course of one night, the events that transpire will keep you guessing!

At first, this book gave me the same frustrations as that serial killer Geico commercial。 You know, the “let’s hide behind the chainsaws” one? But Riley Sager is a master storyteller—and I couldn’t put this book down—despite my annoyance with the stereotypical unreliable narrator in a thriller。 There was an unexpected twist and I still figured out the ending a little past the halfway mark, but I ended up loving this。 I definitely favor The Last Time I Lied and Home Before Dark over this one, but At first, this book gave me the same frustrations as that serial killer Geico commercial。 You know, the “let’s hide behind the chainsaws” one? I had so many expectations from this book, I probably was waiting to read it even before Riley started writing it。 I am a big fan of the author, and have absolutely loved few of his earlier books。The story revolves around Charlie whose friend Maddy has been recently murdered。 Charlie blames herself for it and does not find solace in anything。 Life becomes too much and so she decides to hit the road with a stranger。 She wants to go home to her grandma and hopes life would become normal at-least t I had so many expectations from this book, I probably was waiting to read it even before Riley started writing it。 I am a big fan of the author, and have absolutely loved few of his earlier books。The story revolves around Charlie whose friend Maddy has been recently murdered。 Charlie blames herself for it and does not find solace in anything。 Life becomes too much and so she decides to hit the road with a stranger。 She wants to go home to her grandma and hopes life would become normal at-least then。 I did not really understand the how and why of this move of hers。 Especially when a person close to you has suffered a fate like that。She’s a big movie buff and there are like 10000 movie references in the book, out of which I knew only a handful。 Few of them won’t make any sense at all if you haven’t seen the movie or don’t know the actor。Nothing happens in the first half of the book。 After around 60%, few twists are thrown along the way which were so ridiculous, they do not even make any sense。 After gulping down the supposed twists, the end becomes clear as daylight。 That end is absurd af。 It feels like Riley wanted to end the book somewhere, so he decided to pin it on the only remaining person relevant to the story。You’d think it would stop there, but no! The epilogue made me even angrier and upset。 Idk why am I giving this even one star, maybe because I am such a big Riley fan I am sure I’ll still be waiting for the next book with as much enthusiasm as I had for this one。 🤦🏻‍♀️ ugh 。。。more

Charlie needs a ride to Ohio from College, and takes a lift with Josh, a stranger to her, for a night time road trip。 A while after their 6hr journey starts, Charlie starts suspecting that Josh is a serial killer。。。the same person that killed her best friend, Maddy。 I am a fan of Riley Sager's books and writing, so let me tell you, I will read every book he writes。 His writing flows and reads well。 There's no unnecessary repetition or descriptions of the most mundane things。。。。 and I can imagine Charlie needs a ride to Ohio from College, and takes a lift with Josh, a stranger to her, for a night time road trip。 A while after their 6hr journey starts, Charlie starts suspecting that Josh is a serial killer。。。the same person that killed her best friend, Maddy。 I am a fan of Riley Sager's books and writing, so let me tell you, I will read every book he writes。 His writing flows and reads well。 There's no unnecessary repetition or descriptions of the most mundane things。。。。 and I can imagine on a road trip, it'd be easy to describe all the trees and the roads, etc。 So I really appreciated that。 I also found the storyline really interesting and for 2 people to be the main characters。。。。in a car as the setting for most of the time, to keep me turning the pages, is quite indicative of the skilled writer that Sager is。 I didn't mind that Charlie 'zones' out during scenes, as she has a mental health issue, that has her seeing movies in her mind, and these in turn embellish actual events happening in her life。 So this makes Charlie a bit of an unreliable narrator。 Charlie as a protagonist though, she makes the most BIZARRE decisions, BUT 1991 (the year in which the book was set) was a totally different time。 I was 10yrs old and I know, life just felt a whole lot safer back then。。。。but when your gut is screaming at you。。。I don't know if the year you're living in should ever matter。。。。you listen Charlie!! ha haI did think that the plot twist was predictable and the end had me wondering。。。。what did I actually just read??? I didn't enjoy that feeling, because I felt duped。。。。versus wowed? My first Riley Sager book。 The writing style was great and I enjoyed the plot, it was so easy to get into and felt super short。 I agree with other reviews that the ending was a bit off pace and I wasn’t wowed like I was expecting。 But I’m going to dive into the others!

I think the biggest problem with this book is the premise。 There's only so much you can do with Trapped In A Car With A Killer。 While aspects of this book were well done it's very generic and ultimately forgettable。 I think the biggest problem with this book is the premise。 There's only so much you can do with Trapped In A Car With A Killer。 While aspects of this book were well done it's very generic and ultimately forgettable。 。。。more
