Summary

“TRACY HOGG HAS GIVEN PARENTS A GREAT GIFT–the ability to develop early insight into their child’s temperament。”
–Los Angeles Family

When Tracy Hogg’s Secrets of the Baby Whisperer was first published, it soared onto bestseller lists across the country。 Parents everywhere became “whisperers” to their newborns, amazed that they could actually communicate with their baby within weeks of their child’s birth。 Tracy gave parents what for some amounted to a miracle: the ability to understand their baby’s every coo and cry so that they could tell immediately if the baby was hungry, tired, in real distress, or just in need of a little TLC。 Tracy also dispelled the insidious myth that parents must go sleepless for the first year of a baby’s life–because a happy baby sleeps through the night。 Now you too can benefit from Tracy’s more than twenty years’ experience。 In this groundbreaking book, she shares simple, accessible programs in which you will learn:

• E。A。S。Y。–how to get baby to eat, play, and sleep on a schedule that will make every member of the household’s life easier and happier。
• S。L。O。W。–how to interpret what your baby is trying to tell you (so you don’t try to feed him when he really wants a nap)。
• How to identify which type of baby yours is–Angel, Textbook, Touchy, Spirited, or Grumpy–and then learn the best way to interact with that type。
• Tracy’s Three Day Magic–how to change any and all bad habits (yours and the baby’s) in just three days。

At the heart of Tracy’s simple but profound message: treat the baby as you would like to be treated yourself。 Reassuring, down-to-earth, and often flying in the face of conventional wisdom, Secrets of the Baby Whisperer promises parents not only a healthier, happier baby but a more relaxed and happy household as well。

As a first time mom, this book just made me anxious and paranoid that I'm ruining my baby。 While I appreciate the EASY method, we don't strictly follow it。Made me realize that I prefer attachment parenting more。 As a first time mom, this book just made me anxious and paranoid that I'm ruining my baby。 While I appreciate the EASY method, we don't strictly follow it。Made me realize that I prefer attachment parenting more。 。。。more

Read it to prepare for second child and as with many parenting books, this book tends to simplify parenting。 For example, I laughed out loud at the chart of very specific noises that babies can make and what they mean。 Some of the techniques she suggests work for some people but not for my "touchy" first。 Read it to prepare for second child and as with many parenting books, this book tends to simplify parenting。 For example, I laughed out loud at the chart of very specific noises that babies can make and what they mean。 Some of the techniques she suggests work for some people but not for my "touchy" first。 。。。more

Some friends told me to read this book, but for me it seems to be not very useful。 I learned from Jean Leadloff's In search for happiness lost much more about the needs of a child。 This is sometimes too much focused on the celebrities and American mothers。 I live in a very different culture。 Néhány barátom mondta, hogy olvassam el ezt a könyvet, de nekem nem igazán tűnt használhatónak。 Jean Leadloff Az elveszett boldogság nyomában című könyvéből sokkal többet tanultam a gyermek szükségleteiről。 Some friends told me to read this book, but for me it seems to be not very useful。 I learned from Jean Leadloff's In search for happiness lost much more about the needs of a child。 This is sometimes too much focused on the celebrities and American mothers。 I live in a very different culture。 Néhány barátom mondta, hogy olvassam el ezt a könyvet, de nekem nem igazán tűnt használhatónak。 Jean Leadloff Az elveszett boldogság nyomában című könyvéből sokkal többet tanultam a gyermek szükségleteiről。 Ez néha túlságosan is hírességcentrikusnak tűnt, ami főleg az amerikai anyukákra összpontosít。 Én egy egészen más kultúrában élek。 。。。more

I really liked the book。 Well written, although I would liked it more if the chapters were structured as per the age-group, not as per topics。Anyway, I liked the ideas and the methods of the authors, personally I've tried everything applicable for my fkid - the E。A。S。Y。 method is well structured, works like a charm for my kid and is something that I really wanted for her as routine。 However, we had issues with the sleep training - shush pat and pick up/put down didn't work for us at all (started I really liked the book。 Well written, although I would liked it more if the chapters were structured as per the age-group, not as per topics。Anyway, I liked the ideas and the methods of the authors, personally I've tried everything applicable for my fkid - the E。A。S。Y。 method is well structured, works like a charm for my kid and is something that I really wanted for her as routine。 However, we had issues with the sleep training - shush pat and pick up/put down didn't work for us at all (started at 4。5 months)。 I followed everything as per the book, watched YouTube videos, so I ensure I am not doing anything wrong, but nothing - my kid was crying her eyes out so much that after one night she lost her voice。 At this point I was so desperate and I introduced her to the pacifier (which she hated so far), she was so upset at the moment that she started accepting it。 Scince then she is falling asleep on her own (no caregivers, no swing, etc), but with the pacifier。 Now will try weaning the pacifier by using the pull out paci method。 Hope it works! 。。。more

It's not a book for parents, it's a book for mothers。 However, once you make your peace with the disparaging and sometimes borderline insulting treatment of "the other parent", you might still get some useful information out of it。 Keep in mind, though, that even for mothers this book is full of anecdotes that are meant in a humorous way, but are often cringeworthy, judgemental, and sometimes plainly insulting。 Maybe that's new way to sell consulting services - tell your clients they're stupid。 It's not a book for parents, it's a book for mothers。 However, once you make your peace with the disparaging and sometimes borderline insulting treatment of "the other parent", you might still get some useful information out of it。 Keep in mind, though, that even for mothers this book is full of anecdotes that are meant in a humorous way, but are often cringeworthy, judgemental, and sometimes plainly insulting。 Maybe that's new way to sell consulting services - tell your clients they're stupid。 A Marie Condo of babies。As for the content。 The main value for me is the ray of hope it gives you when you're struggling to get your child to sleep enough (for them and for you)。 However, apart from the hope that her wonderful plan gives, there's not that many practical tips how to implement it in practice。 Maybe that's just a way to upsell individual consultations。For example, when explaining how to break the habit of baby refusing to sleep in its bed she writes: "The baby would not stop crying if you approach the bed。 But we did enter the bedroom on the first night。 After three more nights, we could sit near the bed, after two weeks the baby would fall asleep in the bed"。 My main question here would be: where did the bloody baby sleep for those two weeks then? Well, she doesn't cover such details。Would I recommend this book? For a clueless parent, probably。 For somebody who knows what they want to do and are looking for help in HOW to do that, probably not。 。。。more

Her ideas are practical and mostly common sense。 I am extremely type A so I am all about routines。 My 3 month old did start sleeping better and in her own room once I put the principles of EASY to work。 Would recommend this to anyone with babies!

This book presents excellent content with tons of examples and I'd recommend it to any parent to be as an initial source of information and inspiration。 I have to say that on several occasions throughout my reading I was surprised by facts and ideas I had never considered, from either a mother, father or even baby's perspective。That said, the writer's style definitely won't suit many readers, as it didn't for me。 I felt the excessive repetition of topics made the reading frustrating and hard to This book presents excellent content with tons of examples and I'd recommend it to any parent to be as an initial source of information and inspiration。 I have to say that on several occasions throughout my reading I was surprised by facts and ideas I had never considered, from either a mother, father or even baby's perspective。That said, the writer's style definitely won't suit many readers, as it didn't for me。 I felt the excessive repetition of topics made the reading frustrating and hard to follow。 As a closing note: the book is meant to present general knowledge present all the many topics around early expecting a baby and post natal family life and not dive deeply into each subject。 。。。more

This book gave me a lot of the info I needed to bring order to my life with a 3 week old baby。 It may be a little dated, and I've read reviews by others that don't appreciate the somewhat condescending tone of the author, but I was in a place in my life where it didn't bother me at all, hahaha。 I especially appreciated the bits that give insight into what your baby is trying to tell you through their body language。 I was on the point of wondering if my baby had colic and every day felt like a "f This book gave me a lot of the info I needed to bring order to my life with a 3 week old baby。 It may be a little dated, and I've read reviews by others that don't appreciate the somewhat condescending tone of the author, but I was in a place in my life where it didn't bother me at all, hahaha。 I especially appreciated the bits that give insight into what your baby is trying to tell you through their body language。 I was on the point of wondering if my baby had colic and every day felt like a "feeding frenzy" day where she was eating every hour。 But, armed with info and perspective from this book, my baby now sleeps through the night at 2 months old! I would definitely recommend this book。Note: I don't follow this system religiously, and it is good to pair it with knowledge in other books (like the ones from La Leche)。 The author does encourage parents to use their common sense and instinct to make good choices for their particular situation, which is what I try to do。 。。。more

This book is really helpful, but there are a few things readers need to take with a grain of salt。 If you are considering purchasing the Taking Cara Babies newborn course, you could read this and Happiest Baby on the Block and probably save a lot of money!

I’m really not sure what to make of this。 Some of the advice has been very useful and has helped me to understand my currently 6-week old baby better。 The list of what different cries sound like and the table with baby body language were stand-outs。 I also like, in theory, the idea of the EASY schedule - Eat, Awake/Activity, Sleep and You-time。 However。 The tone this book is written in really spoils it。 Hogg can come across quite know-it-all, condescending and judgemental。 It is not the book to I’m really not sure what to make of this。 Some of the advice has been very useful and has helped me to understand my currently 6-week old baby better。 The list of what different cries sound like and the table with baby body language were stand-outs。 I also like, in theory, the idea of the EASY schedule - Eat, Awake/Activity, Sleep and You-time。 However。 The tone this book is written in really spoils it。 Hogg can come across quite know-it-all, condescending and judgemental。 It is not the book to read in the midst of the baby blues or when you are suffering postnatal anxiety or depression。 I did read it in the midst of the baby blues and I’m still struggling to get some of it out of my head。 I’d recommend reading this fully either early enough in your pregnancy to forget the most condescending parts or just dipping into for reference。 Also, it was written 20 years ago and whilst the basics of baby care haven’t changed, there are definitely parts that haven’t aged well, e。g。 ‘Men do best with concrete tasks’。 。。。more

Overall a good read like many parenting books there’s a lot of advice and you take what works for your family。 I liked Tracy’s simple style and the stories she incorporated throughout the book。 There were many stories I related to from parents she has worked with。 The chapter on postpartum recovery was important and I thought her advice and suggestions were spot on, especially slowing down to your newborns pace。

This is the kind of book that has helpful tidbits that any new parent can take away。 For us, I agree with Hogg’s EASY routine (though I learned that from a different source and didn’t need the book for that), and Hogg does seem to be knowledgeable about babies and explains her methods well。 However, I fundamentally disagree with the idea that parents should not assist their babies in sleeping (no rocking, feeding to sleep, etc) and that if you just follow her methods they’ll be sleeping through This is the kind of book that has helpful tidbits that any new parent can take away。 For us, I agree with Hogg’s EASY routine (though I learned that from a different source and didn’t need the book for that), and Hogg does seem to be knowledgeable about babies and explains her methods well。 However, I fundamentally disagree with the idea that parents should not assist their babies in sleeping (no rocking, feeding to sleep, etc) and that if you just follow her methods they’ll be sleeping through the night。 It’s just not realistic and her tone often comes across as judgmental and harsh。 As a new parent, reading the book made me question what I was doing more than it offered practical help。 。。。more
