With more than 200 full-color illustrations, this big, handsome volume describes dogs of all sizes, shapes, traits, and personalities。

Your dog will be a constant companion and source of support through their life and picking the right one to match your lifestyle will make it a long and happy partnership。 Dare to get attached to your new best furry friend。 The Dog is filled with gorgeous images of all types of dogs for you to fall in love with, along with all the reasons that you will。

Author David Alderton wants every prospective owner to find the very best dog to fit their own personality and lifestyle, and in this book he discusses breeds and their owners under the following categories:
Absolute beginners
Family-friendly dogs
Good mixers
Dogs for couch potatoes
High-maintenance hair
Large dogs for large spaces
Hypoallergenic dogs
Dogs with special skills
Dogs for runners
Portable dogs
Weird and wonderful dogs
Smart dogs
Burglar deterrents
For example, exercise junkies will find a willing canine companion in a Dalmatian or an English Springer Spaniel。 Couch potatoes, on the other hand, will probably prefer a Basset Hound or a Shih Tzu。 First-time owners might be looking for an easy-going dog that makes minimal demands, such as a Labrador Retriever, and families with a houseful of kids might prefer a patient but playful pooch, such as a Beagle or an English Setter。 Each breed is categorized and profiled with a large color portrait, a brief history of the breed, a description of the animal's traits, and a chart that pinpoints the dog's characteristics

*Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review*I think if someone is looking for a particular dog, then this book is perfect。 I appreciated the information and the pictures, but this wasn't for me。 I have never chosen a dog, all my dogs were adopted so。。they have mixed breeds。 I have met a lot of breeds and almost none of them match the descriptions, but I do think that things such as coat care are important。 *Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review*I think if someone is looking for a particular dog, then this book is perfect。 I appreciated the information and the pictures, but this wasn't for me。 I have never chosen a dog, all my dogs were adopted so。。they have mixed breeds。 I have met a lot of breeds and almost none of them match the descriptions, but I do think that things such as coat care are important。 。。。more

4。5 🌟Clearly explained and beautifully illustrated。 The author has divided the dogs in 13 groups, such as dogs for beginners, low-maintenance dogs, hypoallergenic dogs, among others。 From my point of view, I think this is quite helpful, because these are some of the concerns people have when looking for a dog。 You can find one dog breed per page with two paragraphs about their origins and some other details。 There is a box with the dog main characteristics and some important notes, and a big-siz 4。5 🌟Clearly explained and beautifully illustrated。 The author has divided the dogs in 13 groups, such as dogs for beginners, low-maintenance dogs, hypoallergenic dogs, among others。 From my point of view, I think this is quite helpful, because these are some of the concerns people have when looking for a dog。 You can find one dog breed per page with two paragraphs about their origins and some other details。 There is a box with the dog main characteristics and some important notes, and a big-size picture of the dog。The only reason I don't give it 5 stars is because there's a point I missed in the box of main characteristics: the life expenctancy。 I think this is very important too。Thanks to Quarto Publishing Group - Chartwell Books and NetGalley for providing me with a digital ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review。 。。。more

I loved the photos in this ambitious book and appreciated the novel aspect of it -- dogs are recommended as top tens for a variety of purposes (dogs for beginners, hypoallergenic dogs, dogs for families, etc。) but I found myself disagreeing with the author quite often。 I've grown up with dogs and have had my fair share, but I also have a best friend who is a dog sitter/walker for a living and frequently spend a week at a time going about the rounds with her。 I've gotten to know so many breeds so I loved the photos in this ambitious book and appreciated the novel aspect of it -- dogs are recommended as top tens for a variety of purposes (dogs for beginners, hypoallergenic dogs, dogs for families, etc。) but I found myself disagreeing with the author quite often。 I've grown up with dogs and have had my fair share, but I also have a best friend who is a dog sitter/walker for a living and frequently spend a week at a time going about the rounds with her。 I've gotten to know so many breeds so well by spending so much time with them, and also have learned so much from her。 Many of the descriptions of the breeds in this book don't mesh with my experience or hers, such as with huskies, Boston terriers, English setters。。。 I could go on and on。 The book highlights and recommends many rare dogs that are going to be quite expensive, and there's no focus at all about the benefits of rescue and adoption。 The "mongrel" is featured once, and that's it for recommending mixed breeds。 Our current family dog, Moose, is a half and half mix of Labrador retriever and English setter, and he's the most fabulous dog。 He's a rescue from a shelter but we couldn't have ordered a friendlier, more loyal, more loving and fun dog。 Our last dog was a collie mix who was also such a wonderful family pet。 The idea of seeking out quite rare breeds because they were recommended by a book like a dog catalog doesn't sit very well with me, to be honest, when so many wonderful dogs are put to sleep every day because people want to buy a designer dog。 In any case, even if that's what you want to use the book for, I don't feel that the information is complete。 It's wonderful in some ways -- great color photos, good charts of things like activity level and coat care -- but doesn't give all the information I'd give。 I kept wanting to add information to the entries。 My favorite resource for learning all you could ask for about dog breeds is actually an online resource -- www。pets4homes。co。uk/dog-breeds。 We used it when we learned our dog Moose's breeds (we sprang for a DNA test out of unbridled curiosity because he looked so much like he might have Great Dane in him) and we wanted to learn more about English setters。 I appreciate that it has so much history, positives, negatives, etc。 and it was spot on。This is a fun book to look through, but I hope people will see it more as an interesting exercise and then go look for similar breeds at their local shelters and rescue organizations。I read a temporary digital ARC of this book for the purpose of review。 。。。more

When it is eternally snowy and cold outside, superspeed readers like me can read 250+ pages/hour, so yes, I have read the book … and many more today。 LOLI requested and received a temporary digital Advance Reader Copy of this book from #NetGalley, the publisher and the author in exchange for an honest review。 From the publisher, as I do not repeat the contents or story of books in reviews, I let them do it as they do it better than I do 😸。With more than 200 full-colour illustrations, this big, h When it is eternally snowy and cold outside, superspeed readers like me can read 250+ pages/hour, so yes, I have read the book … and many more today。 LOLI requested and received a temporary digital Advance Reader Copy of this book from #NetGalley, the publisher and the author in exchange for an honest review。 From the publisher, as I do not repeat the contents or story of books in reviews, I let them do it as they do it better than I do 😸。With more than 200 full-colour illustrations, this big, handsome volume describes dogs of all sizes, shapes, traits, and personalities。Your dog will be a constant companion and source of support through their life and picking the right one to match your lifestyle will make it a long and happy partnership。 Dare to get attached to your new best furry friend。 The Dog is filled with gorgeous images of all types of dogs for you to fall in love with, along with all the reasons that you will。 Author David Alderton wants every prospective owner to find the very best dog to fit their own personality and lifestyle, and in this book, he discusses breeds and their owners under the following categories: Absolute beginnersFamily-friendly dogsGood mixersDogs for couch potatoesHigh-maintenance hairLarge dogs for large spacesHypoallergenic dogs Dogs with special skillsDogs for runnersPortable dogsWeird and wonderful dogsSmart dogsBurglar deterrents For example, exercise junkies will find a willing canine companion in a Dalmatian or an English Springer Spaniel。 Couch potatoes, on the other hand, will probably prefer a Basset Hound or a Shih Tzu。 First-time owners might be looking for an easy-going dog that makes minimal demands, such as a Labrador Retriever, and families with a houseful of kids might prefer a patient but playful pooches, such as a Beagle or an English Setter。 Each breed is categorized and profiled with a large colour portrait, a brief history of the breed, a description of the animal's traits, and a chart that pinpoints the dog's characteristics。While obviously this book cannot cover all dog breeds (500+ and counting) the ones it cover are amazing。 The illustrations are great and all the fun facts were great to learn as well。 Kids would love this book and my dad who loves "Pick a Puppy" ON NatGeo would enjoy reading this as well。 Vizslas, for instance, NEED to run daily and are velcro dogs as well so a couch potato would NOT be happy with one。As always, I try to find a reason to not rate with stars as I love emojis (outside of their incessant use by "🙏-ed Social Influencer Millennials/#BachelorNation survivors/Tik-Tok and YouTube Millionaires/etc。 " on Instagram and Twitter。。。 Get a real job, people!) so let's give it 🐕 🐕 🐕 🐕  。。。more

I really enjoyed reading through thus guide。 As a dog lover I think this is a must-read , especially for people who have no to little experience with dogs and are looking into becoming a dog owner。 But also experienced dog people will get a kick out of it, learning new things about the wide variety of breeds and their characteristics。

Visually beautiful book, with great layout and gorgeous pictures。Author uses their own way of grouping (dogs for beginners, good mixers, dogs with talents etc。), which I don’t really mind。 It’s perhaps more descriptive, but can be misleading, since it reflects one persons bias or opinion。The book is geared towards helping people decide which breed is right for them。 I like that it goes into activity level, personality, grooming and training requirements。 These are important aspects to consider b Visually beautiful book, with great layout and gorgeous pictures。Author uses their own way of grouping (dogs for beginners, good mixers, dogs with talents etc。), which I don’t really mind。 It’s perhaps more descriptive, but can be misleading, since it reflects one persons bias or opinion。The book is geared towards helping people decide which breed is right for them。 I like that it goes into activity level, personality, grooming and training requirements。 These are important aspects to consider before adding a dog to your family。 I don’t think that this book accomplishes its goal。 It’s just too brief, lacking important details or glossing over other points。 It is also not complete, as the selection presented is missing many breeds。 I found it odd that the selection of breeds includes so many obscure and largely unknown breeds。 These obscure breeds would be difficult to find, and very expensive, so it doesn’t make sense to me to present them in a book that aims to help you find the right pet dog。 。。。more
