Summary

When Jack meets his new foster brother, he already knows three things about him:

Joseph almost killed a teacher。

He was incarcerated at a place called Stone Mountain。

He has a daughter。 Her name is Jupiter。 And he has never seen her。

What Jack doesn’t know, at first, is how desperate Joseph is to find his baby girl。

Or how urgently he, Jack, will want to help。

But the past can’t be shaken off。 Even as new bonds form, old wounds reopen。 The search for Jupiter demands more from Jack than he can imagine。

This tender, heartbreaking novel is Gary D。 Schmidt at his best。

SUPER SHORT but loved the way the story was told。 it made the innocence of the novel shine whilst addressing the complex backgrounds of the main character’s new acquaintance。 a little too kiddy for me (ik two books ago i was saying how it was too adulty) BUT putting that aside, i didn’t cry although the plot was heart wrenching。 wouldn’t recommend but very nice, short read!!

I wish I could give this book 10 stars。

HOLY CRAP!!! the ending of this completely destroyed my soul。 this was so beautiful。 I dont know why so many authors are afraid of writing short books。 I read this in a day and it was gripping, heart wrenching, warm, cute。 it was just everything。 Definetley one of my favourite reads this year。 I bawled at the end。 ugh!!!!Its a five but i did not change my life so more like a soft five lol。

My heart was literally just ripped out of my chest and then sloppily sewed back into place。 Would I read it again? Absolutely。

Seriously such a sad ending but also do good🥺

I'm giving this book 4 stars since I felt like it had so much more potential。 I feel like It could have been better。 But it was still so good and fast paced and it definitely broke my heart。 I definitely cried。 I love this book and would read it over and over I'm giving this book 4 stars since I felt like it had so much more potential。 I feel like It could have been better。 But it was still so good and fast paced and it definitely broke my heart。 I definitely cried。 I love this book and would read it over and over 。。。more

What devastatingly wonderful story。 The world is full of good and evil。 This story has both extremes。 While the books is a short/quick read, it is gut wrenching and thought provoking。 Joseph is only a teen but has life experiences some will never have。 He’s experienced trauma and heartache but ultimately, knew what is was to love and be loved。 This story left me shattered。 I was angry, sad, happy, frustrated, and hopeful…a roller coaster of emotions。

Just sad。 Did not like the ending

> “The angels?” said Joseph。 “Really?” “Why not?” said Reverend Ballou。 “Because bad things happen,” said Joseph。 “If there were angels, then bad things wouldn’t happen。” “Maybe angels aren’t always meant to stop bad things。” “So what good are they?” “To be with us when bad things happen。” Joseph looked at him。 “Then where the hell were they?” he said。 I thought Reverend Ballou was going to start bawling。” 。。。more

I'll keep this short and sweet。 Even if the narration is simple and not hard to follow, the themes of this book are beautiful。 The way the story is told is so heartfelt and the ending definitely broke me a little bit。 I did not cry I'll keep this short and sweet。 Even if the narration is simple and not hard to follow, the themes of this book are beautiful。 The way the story is told is so heartfelt and the ending definitely broke me a little bit。 I did not cry 。。。more

I bawled my eyes out for hours after finishing this book。 It tore my heart out。 Please read this book。 If you only ever read one more book in your life, please let it be this one。 10/10 would recommend。 I will think about this book for the rest of my life。 I’m kind of speechless still, it was that kind of book。

Although this book is written for younger audiences, I loved this story。 This is one of my favorite books, I reread it all the time。 I also appreciate the condensed approach to this book。 It allows you to read this story in one sitting, which I think is the very way that this book should be read。 The characters in this book are also very unique and Schmidt writes in such a way that allows you to understand the characters without having to tell you what their personality is。 You're able to infer Although this book is written for younger audiences, I loved this story。 This is one of my favorite books, I reread it all the time。 I also appreciate the condensed approach to this book。 It allows you to read this story in one sitting, which I think is the very way that this book should be read。 The characters in this book are also very unique and Schmidt writes in such a way that allows you to understand the characters without having to tell you what their personality is。 You're able to infer such through simple action and dialogue。 This story doesn't need any more, because it accomplishes so much just thorugh 。。。more

Heartbreaking story of a teen who has made choices in life that were ultimately defense mechanisms。 This boy opens up himself to others as he gains trust。 Just at the moment he is most hopeful, his old life has come back and stolen his psychological and and emotional improvement。 Lots of spoilers if I continue。 Powerful read。

Short book。 Moving, profound and quality writing。 It’s devastating, heart breaking, and utterly crushing。

This YA novel was short and sweet, but had the depth and emotion that any of the best adult fiction novels have。 Joseph comes to live with a foster family at the age of 14。 He is expected to share in the responsibilities of this farming family- like milking the cows。 Jack, the 12 year old son of the foster parents, is a loyal brother from day one。 When the bus driver insults Joseph, Joseph decides to get off the bus and walk to school。 Jack joins him in solidarity, despite the fact that it is 20 This YA novel was short and sweet, but had the depth and emotion that any of the best adult fiction novels have。 Joseph comes to live with a foster family at the age of 14。 He is expected to share in the responsibilities of this farming family- like milking the cows。 Jack, the 12 year old son of the foster parents, is a loyal brother from day one。 When the bus driver insults Joseph, Joseph decides to get off the bus and walk to school。 Jack joins him in solidarity, despite the fact that it is 20 degrees outside and not a short walk to school。 Jack tries to stand up for Joseph in any way he can。Joseph enters the picture at a disadvantage。 People know he has threatened a teacher and been sent away to Stone Mountain, and that he's got a daughter already。 Some people don't give him a chance, but there are a few teachers who do- and this can make all the difference。 Joseph really starts to grow and become part of his foster family。 He starts to excel in certain areas at school。 But at the heart of it, he really wants to be connected to his daughter Jupiter, who is living in foster care after her mom didn't make it through childbirth。 He walks in the cold and snow to the town he learns she's in in the hopes of finding her。 Joseph's dad is after money and wants to be paid to allow Jupiter to be adopted。 He shows up at Joseph's foster home threatening their family to give Joseph back to him。 Joseph leaves with his dad, which ends tragically。 Joseph's foster family ends up adopting Jupiter, though the unfortunate timing of them being two ships passing in the night is truly heartbreaking。 This little story packs a big punch。 。。。more

I listened to this 3 hour audiobook over the course of 2 days running a lot of errands。 It was recommended on tiktok and I mistakenly assumed it was for adults。 I think for every YA novel I accidentally read my review will be the same- whiny privileged kid causes trouble and takes down everyone around them。 Cringey and predictable featuring a manic pixie dream girl。 Hardly worth it, but at least it held my attention。

Heartbreaking。 Absolutely heartbreaking, okay so books don’t make me cry that often but oh my gosh。 This was terrible but in a heart wrenching way that made me keep reading it because I rooted for the characters so much that it all just crashed down。Okay I really really really loved this book, I had been hearing about it for a long time and I realized how short it was so I decided to give it a shot and I’m so happy I did…please read this。
