Summary

Con La amiga estupenda， Elena Ferrante inaugura una tetralogia deslumbrante que tiene como telón de fondo la ciudad de Nápoles a mediados del siglo pasado y como protagonistas a Lenù y Lila， dos jóvenes mujeres que están aprendiendo a gobernar su vida en un entorno donde la astucia， antes que la inteligencia， es el ingrediente de todas las salsas。

La relación a menudo tempestuosa entre Lila y Lenù viene acompañada de un coro de voces que dan cuerpo a su historia y nos muestran la realidad de un barrio pobre， habitado por gente humilde que acata sin rechistar la ley del más fuerte， pero La amiga estupenda está lejos del realismo social: lo que aquí tenemos son unos personajes de carne y hueso， que nos intrigan y nos deslumbran por la fuerza y la urgencia de sus emociones。

Por primera vez Ferrante aborda una narración muy amplia， poniendo en escena un verdadero tableau vivant donde no hay espacio para el tópico: todo es vida y todo respira al hilo de la mejor literatura。

I didn’t like this book （but it looks like I am in the minority）。 I expected a entirely different read and ended up very disappointed with the story and the way it was written。 There are way too many reflections of poor children growing up in tough surroundings， it is quite repetitive， several characters， and the competitiveness between Elena and Lila was somewhat annoying to me。 It ends abruptly and I don’t feel like reading the sequel at all。

I feel very conflicted about this one and almost feel as though the title in itself is misleading。 “My Brilliant Friend，” which I thought would tell the story of two girlfriends that are almost soulmates， walking through life together with a strong， powerful friendship， felt more like a tale of jealousy。 Elena， the narrator， held Lena to such a high regard yet simultaneously was so deeply critical。 Her only motivation for her own success was beating Lena， and seemed to completely miss the fact t I feel very conflicted about this one and almost feel as though the title in itself is misleading。 “My Brilliant Friend，” which I thought would tell the story of two girlfriends that are almost soulmates， walking through life together with a strong， powerful friendship， felt more like a tale of jealousy。 Elena， the narrator， held Lena to such a high regard yet simultaneously was so deeply critical。 Her only motivation for her own success was beating Lena， and seemed to completely miss the fact that Lena’s financial standing made her own knowledge and magic impossible to cultivate。 It was sad， as I do think to an extent Lena had much better intentions for Elena and wanted to see her thrive。 I will say， the cultural aspects and underlying family dynamics was interesting， but it was certainly hard to look past the petty female behavior。 This book is part one of a series of 4。 TBD on if I move onto the next one， but it did end on an interesting note。 。。。more

Only near the end of the book did I come to agree that this book is a meditation on friendship。 Up until a certain a point it only appeared to be exploring girlhood， beautifully written， mentorship， and what excited me most: the intimate sketch of a small neighborhood in Naples， to be Italian。 I felt the full force of the friendship between the two girls finally at the end and it was a bittersweet feeling。 It was a very emotional book for me- I mean that I felt many emotions while reading。 It wa Only near the end of the book did I come to agree that this book is a meditation on friendship。 Up until a certain a point it only appeared to be exploring girlhood， beautifully written， mentorship， and what excited me most: the intimate sketch of a small neighborhood in Naples， to be Italian。 I felt the full force of the friendship between the two girls finally at the end and it was a bittersweet feeling。 It was a very emotional book for me- I mean that I felt many emotions while reading。 It was a fairly intense reading experience and I’m glad that Ferrante took her liberties and chose to write the story in four dense volumes， I think the detail and density lends itself well to the story。 Can’t wait to keep reading。 。。。more

Calificación real 4。5Casi las 5 estrellas。 Ya tenía tiempo deseando leer “La amiga estupenda” de la misteriosa Elena Ferrante。 Las múltiples recomendaciones que veía sobre esta tetralogía por un lado me hacían desear leerla ya， pero por otro lado temía decepcionarme y que solo fuera un pa novela inflada más por el marketing editorial。Afortunadamente y aunque en un principio no lograba conectar con la trama， descubrí una novela maravillosa donde la historia de amistad entre Lenu （la narradora） y Calificación real 4。5Casi las 5 estrellas。 Ya tenía tiempo deseando leer “La amiga estupenda” de la misteriosa Elena Ferrante。 Las múltiples recomendaciones que veía sobre esta tetralogía por un lado me hacían desear leerla ya， pero por otro lado temía decepcionarme y que solo fuera un pa novela inflada más por el marketing editorial。Afortunadamente y aunque en un principio no lograba conectar con la trama， descubrí una novela maravillosa donde la historia de amistad entre Lenu （la narradora） y Lila va más allá de eso。 La historia se desarrolla en Nápoles， Italia en mitad de los años cincuenta， y nos presenta no solo la vida de estas dos increíbles mujeres que tienen una fuerte amistad desde la infancia， sino también sus sueños， sus temores y sus complejas personalidades que se mezclan en un ambiente de violencia donde la mujer es quien peor la lleva。El acoso， las agresiones， son al parecer el pan de cada día en el pobre vecindario donde viven Lenu， Lila， sus familias， sus vecinos y sus amigos。 Situación que su autora narra con una total naturalidad que pasma y conmueve。 Y quizás ese es el encanto de estas novelas， su crudeza y frialdad al contarlo。 Obviamente el final es un gancho que te deja simplemente listo para leer la segunda parte y definitivamente voy por el。 。。。more

3。5ish stars。 This book took me an awfully long time to read， and I felt it so hard to get into。 Whilst it picked up toward the end， at times I felt like I was reading to finish rather than reading to enjoy。 I found the characters hard to keep a track of and was often flicking to the front to check who was who。 I wanted to like this book so much especially after hearing such rave reviews but it was a bit middle of the road for me。

I will forever remember this book…As one of the worst I have ever read。 Elena’s characters all live in a world of evil。 They are bitter， envy， hate each other， hurt each other， tease each other and complain about each other。 Ferante can’t complete two pages in a row without stressing how bad her （character’s？） life is and how every body is against her。 Every compliment must be a disguise for some thing， every good thought is a prologue to a bad one。 Horrible！
