Summary

The pains of growing older, the onset of loneliness, the creeping indifference of a loved one and the decay of passion: in The Woman Destroyed, Simone de Beauvoir undertakes a compelling journey into the sources of our vulnerability through three tales of women trapped by circumstance and trying to rebuild their lives。 In the collection's title story Monique attempts to piece together the remnants of her former life after her husband confesses to an affair with a younger woman。 In "The Monologue" a rich and spoilt woman is consumed with bitterness and loneliness after her son and husband have left home。 In "The Age of Discretion" a scholar faces the harsh rejection of her latest academic work and the waning love of a son more interested in his young wife and her worldly values。

Full of wit and compassion, de Beauvoir's analysis is unsurpassable: enthralling as fiction, essential as an insight into the complexities of women's lives。

Nothing like living through others, losing touch with your inner self, and collapsing into depression when your props are removed or flawed to remind yourself of how fragile your sense of identity and belonging is as a female in this world <3

(Review for the last story "The Woman Destroyed")Ridiculously well written。 If I had seen a summary of the plot beforehand it would not have sounded that interesting, but Beauvoir manages to create an absolutely captivating story from this, with a very important message。 Depressing and eye-opening at the same time。 Recommended reading for everyone。 (Review for the last story "The Woman Destroyed")Ridiculously well written。 If I had seen a summary of the plot beforehand it would not have sounded that interesting, but Beauvoir manages to create an absolutely captivating story from this, with a very important message。 Depressing and eye-opening at the same time。 Recommended reading for everyone。 。。。more

2。5 stars。 I really wanted to like this book however I think the stories all went on extremely long。 The first story was my favorite and I think it was fairly interesting throughout, however the second one was terrible。 The writing was very weird and it felt less like a story and more like a bunch of thoughts put together。 This book definitely did not live up to the hype。

I know very well I should not sacrifice myself for anyone on earth。" A melancholy takeaway, but a beautiful book。 Proud to have de Beauvoir as my namesake。 。。。more

4。5/5Beneath the, in my opinion, sometimes tiresome writing, were sad and touching stories that made it a very good book and definitely worth reading。

Song- nobody by mitski -i agree with some of the reviews that ive seen, where they say they didnt necessarily enjoy the book。 I didn’t exactly enjoy it, but i would give it a 3 because the book follows a beautiful timeline where the 3 women involved progressively are more broken/destroyed。 It was very slow at first in the third novella “The woman destroyed”, which made me put down the book for a couple days but i’m glad i ended up finishing it。 Each of the main characters in each novella are so Song- nobody by mitski -i agree with some of the reviews that ive seen, where they say they didnt necessarily enjoy the book。 I didn’t exactly enjoy it, but i would give it a 3 because the book follows a beautiful timeline where the 3 women involved progressively are more broken/destroyed。 It was very slow at first in the third novella “The woman destroyed”, which made me put down the book for a couple days but i’m glad i ended up finishing it。 Each of the main characters in each novella are so complex, and so strangled by the gender norms at the time, and their crises are developed very differently in each story。 I liked how different each story was from the others。 Overall i think it lacked development of the side characters, but it’s a good read 。。。more

I didn’t finish this - it was just boring unlikeable white women complaining。 I see how it might have “literary value” or whatever but the actual plot/lack thereof ruined it for me。

。。。more

Extremely interesting。。。the second short story was the only one out of the three that was difficult to get through。。。 all in all a great outlook on the mindset and mental health of aging women。
