Summary

Six years after the fight that ended their friendship, Daphne Berg is shocked when Drue Cavanaugh walks back into her life, looking as lovely and successful as ever, with a massive favor to ask。 Daphne hasn’t spoken one word to Drue in all this time—she doesn’t even hate-follow her ex-best friend on social media—so when Drue asks if she will be her maid-of-honor at the society wedding of the summer, Daphne is rightfully speechless。

Drue was always the one who had everything—except the ability to hold onto friends。 Meanwhile, Daphne’s no longer the same self-effacing sidekick she was back in high school。 She’s built a life that she loves, including a growing career as a plus-size Instagram influencer。 Letting glamorous, seductive Drue back into her life is risky, but it comes with an invitation to spend a weekend in a waterfront Cape Cod mansion。 When Drue begs and pleads and dangles the prospect of cute single guys, Daphne finds herself powerless as ever to resist her friend’s siren song。

A sparkling novel about the complexities of female friendship, the pitfalls of living out loud and online, and the resilience of the human heart, Big Summer is a witty, moving story about family, friendship, and figuring out what matters most。

A good book。 Fast paced。 Well written。 The ending was kinda meh for me。 A book that is easy to put down in my opinion。

Good Book, Good MysteryI love Jennifer Weiner's books because I can relate to the main character's emotions, thoughts and experiences they face as a full figured woman。 Jennifer's writing is easy to read, always engaging and full of humour。 Big Summer was no exception。 It was a great read and I was not able to put it down。Daphne is a full figured woman who is a working her to becoming an influencer。 As she is about to collaborate with a famous influencer, Drue, an old friend from high school, c Good Book, Good MysteryI love Jennifer Weiner's books because I can relate to the main character's emotions, thoughts and experiences they face as a full figured woman。 Jennifer's writing is easy to read, always engaging and full of humour。 Big Summer was no exception。 It was a great read and I was not able to put it down。Daphne is a full figured woman who is a working her to becoming an influencer。 As she is about to collaborate with a famous influencer, Drue, an old friend from high school, comes back into her life and asks Daphne to be a bridesmaid in the wedding event of the year。 Daphne reluctantly accepts the offer thinking it will promote her business but instead winds up as a suspect in a murder and goes to great lengths to solve the crime。 。。。more

I thought this was going to be a fun, chick-lit story where the girl gets revenge and gets the guy。 A friend had rated it 3 stars and the more I read, I wondered if that meant it fell apart at the end because I was quite enjoying it。 Then halfway through it became a mystery and definitely changed。 The last third went on way too long and the last 20 pages were pretty ridiculous and felt like the author was just done writing and didn’t put as much effort into it。 I rounded up from 3。5 stars becaus I thought this was going to be a fun, chick-lit story where the girl gets revenge and gets the guy。 A friend had rated it 3 stars and the more I read, I wondered if that meant it fell apart at the end because I was quite enjoying it。 Then halfway through it became a mystery and definitely changed。 The last third went on way too long and the last 20 pages were pretty ridiculous and felt like the author was just done writing and didn’t put as much effort into it。 I rounded up from 3。5 stars because it did keep me engaged and was a decent beach read, but my expected version was better than the actual version。 。。。more

Great twist at the end。

This so so book fell flat for me several times throughout and overall。 I did like the message of ‘social media is not real life’ besides that it was meh。

3。5 stars overall。 It had a really good main character who was really easy to relate to。 I didn’t know it was going to have a big mystery element to it, so that was fun surprise!

Good for what it is, a beach read。 A cross between chick lit and mystery, with a side of social consciousness on fat-shaming/body acceptance。 The author seemed a bit conflicted on social media and influencing; maybe her intent was to just lay out some pros and cons。

This book had a strong start。 I loved hearing Daphne’s story and seeing how she embraced herself for who she was。 Always love some body positivity! The ending was only okay for me。

Big Summer ReviewI saw this audiobook on an app and jumped on it。 I felt like I missed out on reading this last summer and saw so many good reviews。 Of course after a whole year, I forgot what the reviews said and had zero clue what the book was even about by the time my hold on the audiobook was ready。 So I dived in blind!Daphne is making a name for herself and not living her life in the shadow of anyone else anymore。 Her instagram has gotten her a new clothing brand deal and she is the maid-of Big Summer ReviewI saw this audiobook on an app and jumped on it。 I felt like I missed out on reading this last summer and saw so many good reviews。 Of course after a whole year, I forgot what the reviews said and had zero clue what the book was even about by the time my hold on the audiobook was ready。 So I dived in blind!Daphne is making a name for herself and not living her life in the shadow of anyone else anymore。 Her instagram has gotten her a new clothing brand deal and she is the maid-of-honor in the wedding of the summer。 The interesting thing is that she hasn't talked to the bride in 6 years。 Drue was her best friend in high school but Daphne finally saw Drue for her she was。 After all this time, she still couldn't say no to Drue and really wanted to believe that she had changed。This is a story of body image, forgiveness, trust, and friendship。 Truthfully, I didn't connect to Daphne much。 My life is far from being instagram worthy and I haven't had a friend be nearly as cruel to me as Drue was to Daphne。 But I think everyone can sympathize with not feeling good enough in their own body and having a friendship that wasn't fulfilling or maybe even toxic。 I loved the mystery in the second half of the story。 I was thrilled that there was a murder to solve (y'all know I love a good game of clue)。 ____ was killed in the _____ with the _____ ----> the key to my heart。 。。。more

That Summer by Jennifer Weiner was an enjoyable, easy to read story, even though it was not one of my favorites by this author。 At times, I found it heart-wrenching as I read about Daphne’s weight loss struggles, the cruelty of her friends, but then I was overwhelmingly on her side and proud of her when she finally stood up and realized she was a good, kind person and that her size didn’t matter。 She realized she was what mattered, not how much she weighed and kudos for realizing that。 I rated i That Summer by Jennifer Weiner was an enjoyable, easy to read story, even though it was not one of my favorites by this author。 At times, I found it heart-wrenching as I read about Daphne’s weight loss struggles, the cruelty of her friends, but then I was overwhelmingly on her side and proud of her when she finally stood up and realized she was a good, kind person and that her size didn’t matter。 She realized she was what mattered, not how much she weighed and kudos for realizing that。 I rated it a four。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 It was good, but I think the murderer at the end should have been somebody else。 It didnt make that much sense that Leela killed her, It would have been more of a twist if somebody else had tbh。

Lots of topics brought up in this book, social media, body acceptance, relationships。。。all fit together and bundled up in a fun read。 Not too heavy, but packed with stuff to think about。 Good mystery too。 Some holes in plot, but not too distracting。

The first part of this was a bit on the boring side I had a hard time getting through it。 In fact it took me most of the reading days。 Once I got through Part one I flew through the rest in three days。 That is when it got interesting。 I do recommend this book but just say be prepared to be on the struggle bus for the first part but don’t give up it gets interesting after that。

You know those books where you don’t want to do a lot of critical thinking and you just want a surface level book with a good story? This is it。

Denise

It started with a look at how complicated female friendships can be and somehow devolved into a poorly executed mystery that made characters of color seem like props almost。 There was a lot here that could have been really interested to pull apart。 Instead, it felt very shallow。

Brooke

An entertaining read but a bit silly。 I can’t believe I just read a book in which the two main characters’ “jobs” are as social influencers。

This was my first Jennifer Weiner book and I was super excited because I feel like she’s all over the best sellers and target aisles。 However, I had no idea what to expect and knew nothing about the book going in - about halfway through I was ready to put it down because the plot is built up SOOO slowly。 Didn’t even know it was a murder mystery type book until over halfway in… I think the characters were developed and built up in a way that helps deepen the plot, but it was too slow of a start f This was my first Jennifer Weiner book and I was super excited because I feel like she’s all over the best sellers and target aisles。 However, I had no idea what to expect and knew nothing about the book going in - about halfway through I was ready to put it down because the plot is built up SOOO slowly。 Didn’t even know it was a murder mystery type book until over halfway in… I think the characters were developed and built up in a way that helps deepen the plot, but it was too slow of a start for me。 I liked it fine but wouldn’t stick my neck out for this book。 A quick beach read if you’re looking for something that doesn’t require a lot of attention。 。。。more

This was a very fun audiobook to listen to! Definitely some unexpected (and some expected) twists, but I thought it was really fun! Definitely a beach read type of book!

Kept me entertained, but the major genre switch and compulsive overuse of words/phrases like "licked my lips" and even the word "almond" was annoying。 Halfway through it felt like an episode of Scooby Doo。 Kept me entertained, but the major genre switch and compulsive overuse of words/phrases like "licked my lips" and even the word "almond" was annoying。 Halfway through it felt like an episode of Scooby Doo。 。。。more

What a super fun twist for a Jennifer Weiner book! I loved it so much!! It starts very lighthearted and fun - which is what I expect from her books。。。。。。 then took a total twist in an amazing way and turned into a mystery to solve - while also hitting on some hot topics right now like social media paid influencers, weight issues, and social status issues in such a positive way。 Highly recommend!

This was not literary genius, in fact, I was getting really bored with the book and the shallow characters and their social media fame when it turned into a morder mystery。 While some aspects were predictable and I had to suspend disbelief on several ocasione, it was a page turner and I wanted to know whodunit!

I don't know what I thought this book was going to be, but it wasn't this。 Chalk this one up to another case of Current Britt trusted Past Britt to put good books in my library queue and listened to it without reading the synopsis。 This book tried to be a lot of things, and it felt to me like it struggled to do any of them well as a result。 This was focused on body positivity, a commentary on social media being a highlight reel and that affluence doesn't guarantee happiness, and then to top that I don't know what I thought this book was going to be, but it wasn't this。 Chalk this one up to another case of Current Britt trusted Past Britt to put good books in my library queue and listened to it without reading the synopsis。 This book tried to be a lot of things, and it felt to me like it struggled to do any of them well as a result。 This was focused on body positivity, a commentary on social media being a highlight reel and that affluence doesn't guarantee happiness, and then to top that off, threw in a murder mystery for fun。 That one really threw me, because we didn't even get to that part until about halfway through the book, resulting in it feeling rushed and weird。 It was a quick read and had its moments with thoughtful points, but overall, I would say it fell short for me, personally。 。。。more

I was not expecting this to turn into a murder mystery。 Until the big reveal, I truly kept expecting it to veer back into contemporary realistic territory。 But no。 It’s a murder mystery writer like contemporary women’s lit。 Not a bad start to some summer-y reading。

the plot of this book is something else 。。way too many jarring genres thrown together messily
