Summary

The long-imprisoned jinn are on the attack, wreaking bloody havoc in villages and cities alike。 But for the Nightbringer, vengeance on his human foes is just the beginning。

At his side, Commandant Keris Veturia declares herself Empress, and calls for the heads of any and all who defy her rule。 At the top of the list? The Blood Shrike and her remaining family。

Laia of Serra, now allied with the Blood Shrike, struggles to recover from the loss of the two people most important to her。 Determined to stop the approaching apocalypse, she throws herself into the destruction of the Nightbringer。 In the process, she awakens an ancient power that could lead her to victory--or to an unimaginable doom。

And deep in the Waiting Place, the Soul Catcher seeks only to forget the life--and love--he left behind。 Yet doing so means ignoring the trail of murder left by the Nightbringer and his jinn。 To uphold his oath and protect the human world from the supernatural, the Soul Catcher must look beyond the borders of his own land。 He must take on a mission that could save--or destroy--all that he knows。

Prepare for the jaw-dropping finale of Sabaa Tahir's beloved New York Times bestselling An Ember in the Ashes fantasy series, and discover: Who will survive the storm?

This would have for a much higher rating except that I started this book 3 times and one of those times I almost finished it and then time passes so I started it again。 It didn’t hold my interest obviously, but I was invested in the characters and story。 I finally plowed through and finished it!

I really enjoyed it。 There were some moments when I sniffled at the loss of certain characters, which seemed really unnecessary, that’s why it’s not a full 5 stars。 Will definitely recommend this series to other people。

This book had a lot of tropes and honestly I had a hard time muddling through it。 Sad for my first foray to get me back into reading and excited about it again :(

Sabaa Tahir knows how to end a series。 It was bittersweet in some places, tore through my heartstrings and made me sob in others, and so, so satisfying。 5/5 stars

It took a little bit to get into it but after a few chapters, it was excellent and sad, and a great story。 Her writing and characters are beautiful。

Just finished and I am heartbroken :) but what a beautiful series。 Tbh, I felt that the ending to this book was a little flat, especially with the amount of build up the book had。 I was on my seat more for the battle in Reaper at the Gates, than I was for this final battle。 Overall though, this book (and this series) is amazing, and I recommend it to anyone

RTC - and so we have finished, my heart is full and empty at the same time, knowing this has come to an end but happy for them all - if you have not yet read this series I highly encourage you to do so!

So often I'm disappointed in the end of trilogy (or quartet) but this was a wonderful conclusion。 I found myself reading really fast to find out what was going to happen and then went back to savor all the details。 So often I'm disappointed in the end of trilogy (or quartet) but this was a wonderful conclusion。 I found myself reading really fast to find out what was going to happen and then went back to savor all the details。 。。。more

This book。。。 the tragedy, the pain, the loss, and the soul piercing anguish。 If you aren’t ready for that than you’ll have to pass on the hope, joy, survival, and unending love threaded through this book。 This story is a masterpiece。

It's a bit difficult reviewing this book because I read it over a long period of time because I was in a bad reading slump and that definetly effected my reading experience and I can't pretend that it didn't。 In theory I think this was a great series finale。 There were a lot of moments that were supposed to be really impactful and I could tell that in other circumstances I probably would have bawled my eyes out。 However, I didn't really feel that invested in the story and just didn't connect wit It's a bit difficult reviewing this book because I read it over a long period of time because I was in a bad reading slump and that definetly effected my reading experience and I can't pretend that it didn't。 In theory I think this was a great series finale。 There were a lot of moments that were supposed to be really impactful and I could tell that in other circumstances I probably would have bawled my eyes out。 However, I didn't really feel that invested in the story and just didn't connect with the characters as much but I honestly just think that's up to the circumstances I read this book in because I have never had this problem before with this series。 There was also lots of worldbuilding and character developement that I really loved。 Overall I also just really like the way this wrapped up the series。 I feel like every character was left in a very satisfying place。 I do have one complaint with this book。 I feel like it was a bit dragged out in moments。 The story was often slow moving and certain things could have been resolved way sooner than they were。 That also caused for a bit of repetitveness。 。。。more

4 stars。 A very solid conclusion。 I’m not mad about it at all。 I will say that it definitely feels a bit too long as there are some dry moments but I enjoyed this a lot。 There were a lot of emotional moments and some of the deaths had me shook。 While I enjoy Laia and Elias quite a bit, The Blood Shrike (a*k*a Helene) had the better plot line going on here。 She goes through such fantastic character development and the things she goes through in this and how strong she remained makes her my favori 4 stars。 A very solid conclusion。 I’m not mad about it at all。 I will say that it definitely feels a bit too long as there are some dry moments but I enjoyed this a lot。 There were a lot of emotional moments and some of the deaths had me shook。 While I enjoy Laia and Elias quite a bit, The Blood Shrike (a*k*a Helene) had the better plot line going on here。 She goes through such fantastic character development and the things she goes through in this and how strong she remained makes her my favorite character in this entire series hands down。 I liked how high stakes and intense this was and the fact that Tahir wasn’t afraid to take it there。 Also, I just can’t get over how much her writing has improved since book one。 It was already pretty good in that one but wow。 I’m very excited to see what she does next now that this series is done。 。。。more

I was very hesitant to read this book for a while。 This was mainly because the last book in a series has the ability to end happily, or implode everything good from the books before。 Honestly, this book was a combination of both。 The not a completely happy ending is mainly why I gave it 4 or over 5 stars, but that is more a personal preference than a critique of the book。 All in all I am sad to finish this series and depart from characters I’ve grown to love throughout the books。

It was good I think it’s just been too long since the other books and I didn’t reread them before

Is he safe? Why didn't we see more of him? 。。。more
