Summary

This special edition of the #1 New York Times bestselling Wings of Fire series soars back in time to give readers a glimpse of Pyrrhia through new eyes。

In the shadow of wings 。 。 。 humans fight for survival。 Ivy doesn't trust the Dragonslayer。 He may be her father and the beloved ruler of Valor, but she knows he's hiding more than the treasure from the sand dragon he killed two decades ago。Leaf doesn't trust dragons。 They're the reason his favorite sister, Wren, is dead, and now he'll do whatever it takes to slay even one。Wren doesn't trust anyone。 She swore off humans after her village tried to sacrifice her to the dragons。 She only has one friend, a small, wonderful mountain dragon named Sky, and they don't need anyone else。In a world of dragons, the humans who scramble around underfoot are easy to overlook。 But Ivy, Leaf, and Wren will each cross paths with dragons in ways that could shape the destiny of both species。 Is a new future possible for all of them 。 。 。 one in which humans can look to the skies with hope instead of fear?

I'm going to be the odd one out and say that Dragonslayer is not that good。。。in the context of the series。If you want a classic "human kills dragons rawr dragon bad" book, there's tons of these。 There's a whole mythology based off dragon slaying。 And that's exactly what Dragonslayer is。 It's a book set in the Wings of Fire universe about humans surrounded by dragons with some context from the proper series。 It's much harder to read if you don't know about the existing context- but really, who he I'm going to be the odd one out and say that Dragonslayer is not that good。。。in the context of the series。If you want a classic "human kills dragons rawr dragon bad" book, there's tons of these。 There's a whole mythology based off dragon slaying。 And that's exactly what Dragonslayer is。 It's a book set in the Wings of Fire universe about humans surrounded by dragons with some context from the proper series。 It's much harder to read if you don't know about the existing context- but really, who here is reading this without knowing the series? Not much to say about this book。 Humans, dragons, some drama, some twists- all with existing Wings of Fire context in the background。 It does its thing well, but its nothing special。 In a series about the dragons, this is just a common dragonslayer novel that I've seen done better before。 Writing style is great。 If you like Wings of Fire, go ahead。 MINOR SPOILER:(view spoiler)[This book is basically REQUIRED READING if you want to understand a lot of the 14th book。 (hide spoiler)] 。。。more

My main problem with this one was that it was too predictable and straight forward。 I loved the interpretations of Dragon names。 Otherwise, not much new in my opinion。

So far, this is my favorite Wings of Fire series!

I really enjoyed this book。 It strayed from the original book series and took a unique twist with the POV being from the human characters。

If you follow along with my reviews, you know I read these with my children, so I approach them with a father's love as my daughter read the first book in the Wings of Fire series and it sparked in her such a love for dragons, books, and art that my house is now blissfully dotted with drawings of dragon eyes, dragons in profile, and much more。 Such is the power of Tui T。 Sutherland as an author。 While my daughter's love of the first book may have brought me into the world of dragons that started If you follow along with my reviews, you know I read these with my children, so I approach them with a father's love as my daughter read the first book in the Wings of Fire series and it sparked in her such a love for dragons, books, and art that my house is now blissfully dotted with drawings of dragon eyes, dragons in profile, and much more。 Such is the power of Tui T。 Sutherland as an author。 While my daughter's love of the first book may have brought me into the world of dragons that started with Clay's view in The Dragonet Prophecy , Sutherland has managed to keep me intrigued with her world told from the perspectives of dragons with their unique tribes, societies, and concerns where humans are not often acknowledged and when they are, they are merely seen as "scavengers" or food。 Herein lies the challenge with this book。 Sutherland sets out to give us the first book after more than a dozen that will be told by humans。 It is a dangerous proposal and even my Wings of Fire obsessed daughter had her pause when we picked it up。 As one can tell from the review I gave, even if softened by the love I have for my daughter's love of dragons and this series, the book pulls off such a change in perspective effectively。 Sutherland shows the weight of the dragon world and the even previous novels as it impacts human views。 We have a series of human societies that respond to the dragons through various methods, hiding underground, sacrificing upstarts (though this is a plot point that plays a role in a character's arc so I won't belabor it here), and training people to watch the skies。 Sutherland gives each character depth and reasoning that feels sincere and appropriate。 There are repercussions for choices and more than once a need to challenge the assumptions of people to allow others opportunity is a plot point of note。 For those worried that there will not be enough dragons, rest assured you will encounter a few familiar faces, but more importantly see a side of dragon and human interaction that seems to build to some pending changes in the world。As this book is part of the "Legends" series of Wings of Fire book, it explores the death of the Queen that set the war in motion that started the prophecy。 It syncs up very well with the other books and my daughter was delighted to see elements from the other novels from a human perspective。 These books remain highly ranked by yours truly because my daughter loves them, but I must admit, I enjoy discovering the dragons with her as a father。 This is truly a series that engages our family and works well for family reading。 We will continue to read these as long as Sutherland continues to possess the ability to make monsters and humans both more human than human。 。。。more

I liked the viewpoint from the Humans。 It was a good storyline outside of the normal Dragon relationships。

I want him and Peril to meet SO BAD。I felt the epilogue was a bit too much of How to Train Your Dragon with Alvin (Invincible Lord) trying to catch Hiccup (Wren) cause he's the dragon master but whatever。Heath was such a sad pitiful creature and I'm glad he and the Dragonmancer's got what they deserved。#RipQueenOasis #ShipLivy 。。。more

This felt like an epic story that wasn't very well told。 The writing is simplistic and full of unnecessary all-caps emphasis。 Tui's writing used to be better than this。I liked the protagonists, in particular Wren and Sky (Peril's fireless twin), but I had some plausibility issues with their part of the story。 Wren learns the dragon language from Sky, but he was supposed to have been abandoned right after he hatched。 He wouldn't have had time to learn anywhere near as much Dragon as Wren learns f This felt like an epic story that wasn't very well told。 The writing is simplistic and full of unnecessary all-caps emphasis。 Tui's writing used to be better than this。I liked the protagonists, in particular Wren and Sky (Peril's fireless twin), but I had some plausibility issues with their part of the story。 Wren learns the dragon language from Sky, but he was supposed to have been abandoned right after he hatched。 He wouldn't have had time to learn anywhere near as much Dragon as Wren learns from him。 I wish the book had gone into how Wren survived in the wilderness; it seems like quite an accomplishment for a little girl (she was only eight at the start, I think)。Since the book is split between three different perspectives that don't converge until halfway through, I had trouble keeping track of the side characters。 I couldn't remember who was supposed to be the smart one, the annoying one, or whatever。 Speaking of annoying, that's mostly what I found Ivy's friends to be。Humans are the focus of Dragonslayer, but I wish the dragon characters weren't all implausibly one-note caricatures。 General Sandstorm always shouts and says "AM I RIGHT!?" and another SandWing can't stop cooing about how cute scavengers are (she also apparently fails to find anything strange about an invisible scavenger)。 I will give the author credit for weaving together most of the scavenger scenes from the first five books。 It does feel like this story was going on the whole time, and we just didn't notice。Do you have to read this to get Wings of Fire #14? No, but it does make the introduction of the human characters there less out-of-the-blue。 。。。more

I feel like the start was a bit slow, and I kept looking at the cover to see who was who (hehe)。 For Ivy's view/story。 It was pretty good, it didn't bore me at all。 But when Stone came back, I wasn't surprised。 I was just like: Okay another character to remember。 (Speaking of that, there were so many characters in each view that I couldn't remember them all。) And it also seemed as if the Dragonslayer was two people, like w Soooooo first off, I was excited to read this because it was part of WoF! Because I wouldn't have expected to hurt a dragon by hitting its scales。 The scales are hard, Leaf! Some parts bored me, and because of that, that's all I have to say about Leaf's view/story。Wren's view/story。 To be honest here, when it was Wren I got excited。 REALLY excited。 The Wren parts were my favourite, and I wouldn't mind if it was about Wren。 So most of you probably know about in book 14 when they run into Wren and Sky? I think that should have been in the book, but then at the start it says something like "This chain of events happens during books 1-5。" So I've proved myself wrong: But there could have been something similar。 The ending was a lot to handle even though I knew what was going to happen。 It was just too much, and when I found out there isn't a scene like on the cover, I was upset。 And Ivy, Leaf, and Wren were only together for about the last 3 chapters! From my opinion they should have been together sooner, and then the ending wouldn't be so much to handle。Also I liked that I knew what Murderbasket's actual name was, IM NOT TELLING YOU HAHA。 And I liked that I recognized the part with Sunny。 All the characters were funny, and I like funniness, so for me that got a thumbs up。 。。。more

This book is so cool。When reading the main series I have always been most interested in the relationship between humans and dragons, especially after finding several dragons that coexisted peacefully with humans。 So interested even that I skipped way ahead and started this book the moment I found it was from the humans' perspective, even though there's still a lot of books between this one and the one I got to so far。 It was amazing seeing the different scenes from the first series from the huma This book is so cool。When reading the main series I have always been most interested in the relationship between humans and dragons, especially after finding several dragons that coexisted peacefully with humans。 So interested even that I skipped way ahead and started this book the moment I found it was from the humans' perspective, even though there's still a lot of books between this one and the one I got to so far。 It was amazing seeing the different scenes from the first series from the humans' point of view! The characters were all great! I was worried at first because all the povs seemed like children and that might get a bit too much, but all three grew up throughout the story until they were teens, which made this not such a problem。 All the characters were interesting and I love how their stories tied together! The cliffhanger at the ending makes me hopeful for a next human-focused book, and so I'll be eagerly awaiting it! 。。。more

Also, did I talk about the scavenger world-building yet? Because OMG the Stavanger world-building! The book dives into the different scavenger settlements and how scavengers live that is never touched on in the books。 It also mentions what the scavengers think of the dragons which is something I’ve been curious about since we met Flower/Rose in book 5。My one criticism I have for the book is the same one I have for most other books, the romantic relationships felt forced。 Leaf and Ivy’s relationship wasn’t relevant to the story and wasn’t given any development。 It felt like the only reason for the two characters to be in a relationship was the fact that they were both main characters of the opposite sex who weren’t siblings。 How every it was refreshing for Wren, a badass runaway who hated humans, to not have a romantic interest, because nearly every character in Wings of Fire has a romantic interest。 I feel like there are only a handful of main characters who don’t have romantic interests。 And that can be not so great for kids self-esteem if every fictional character’s happy ending involves getting into a romantic relationship, especially when nearly all of them are of the opposite sex。 There is like, one same-sex relationship in the series! I want more gay dragons goddamit! With that long-winded criticism, you might be wondering why I gave it five stars and that’s because the relationship issue is a problem in every Wings of Fire book, and this book did better than most in that regard。 Also, the other benefits I talked about totally outweigh the cons。 I’d love to hear what other people feel like about this book and what your opinions are on the relationships in Wings of Fire in general。 。。。more
