Summary

‘One of the most joyous and clear-eyed approaches to playing a character that I have ever read… I am so grateful Giles took notes on his process and turned them into this book。 I was already in awe of his performance; now I’m in awe of his humanity and attention to detail and willingness to share the hard work and magic that goes into it。’ Lin-Manuel Miranda, from his Foreword

‘Stand。 Breathe。 Look。 Try to empty my mind。 Somehow, for some reason, I have been brought to this place to tell this story, now。 So tell it。 That’s all。’

When Lin-Manuel Miranda’s groundbreaking musical Hamilton opened in London’s West End in December 2017, it was as huge a hit as it had been in its original production off- and on Broadway。 Lauded by critics and audiences alike, the show would go on to win a record-equalling seven Olivier Awards – including Best Actor in a Musical for Giles Terera, for his portrayal of Aaron Burr。

For Terera, though, his journey as Burr had begun more than a year earlier, with his first audition in New York, and continuing through extensive research and preparation, intense rehearsals, previews and finally opening night itself。 Throughout this time he kept a journal, recording his experiences of the production and his process of creating his award-winning performance。 This book, Hamilton and Me, is that journal。

It offers an honest, intimate and thrilling look at everything involved in opening a once-in-a-generation production – the triumphs, breakthroughs and doubts, the camaraderie of the rehearsal room and the moments of quiet backstage contemplation – as well as a fascinating, in-depth exploration of now-iconic songs and moments from the musical, as seen from the inside。 It is also deeply personal, as Terera reflects on experiences from his own life that he drew on to help shape his acclaimed portrayal。

Illustrated with dozens of colour photographs, many of which are shared here for the first time, and featuring an exclusive Foreword by Lin-Manuel Miranda, this book is an essential read for all fans of Hamilton – offering fresh, first-hand insights into the music and characters they love and know so well – as well as for aspiring and current performers, students, and anyone who wants to discover what it really felt like to be in the room where it happened。

The EASIEST ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I can give to a book!So I’m pretty sure this isn’t released for another week so my copy must have arrived early 😅 but I beg anyone who loves performing/musicals/drama/acting/theatre in general to pick up this book。The detail that Terera has gone into surrounding the rehearsal process and the process of gaining an understanding of character is incredible。 Set out as a journal, Terera documented notable moments during his time as Aaron Burr in Hamilton and how the performanc The EASIEST ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I can give to a book!So I’m pretty sure this isn’t released for another week so my copy must have arrived early 😅 but I beg anyone who loves performing/musicals/drama/acting/theatre in general to pick up this book。The detail that Terera has gone into surrounding the rehearsal process and the process of gaining an understanding of character is incredible。 Set out as a journal, Terera documented notable moments during his time as Aaron Burr in Hamilton and how the performance came together。I couldn’t put this book down and it’s definitely something I’ll be rereading Very soon 🎭 。。。more

**Listened to the audiobook**Knowing that the hard copy of the book was due for release on 1st July, I jumped for joy when I saw that the audiobook had already been released - nearly a month before the hard copy!!!As a huge Hamilton nerd I love reading any literature about the musical - this book was super exiting as it looked specifically at the rehearsal process and it focussed on the original London cast (something very rare as it always seems to be about the original Broadway cast since that **Listened to the audiobook**Knowing that the hard copy of the book was due for release on 1st July, I jumped for joy when I saw that the audiobook had already been released - nearly a month before the hard copy!!!As a huge Hamilton nerd I love reading any literature about the musical - this book was super exiting as it looked specifically at the rehearsal process and it focussed on the original London cast (something very rare as it always seems to be about the original Broadway cast since that is where the show began) I am a huge fan of the Olivier Award winning Giles Terera and was lucky enough to see his Burr on a good few occasions in the west end。 This book is such a personal and special insight into the making of a musical - and even better it includes so many Hamilton inside stories!! This book is an absolute must-read for anyone who is a Hamilton fan, and anyone who is a fan of musical theatre full stop!!Loved reading/listening to this - the only downside was that it was just so short!!I will definitely be listening to this audiobook again before the year is out!! 。。。more

UK RELEASE 1/7/21。6th of December 2017 - Victoria Palace Theatre, London。 A day has arrived that I thought might get cancelled but I'm here。 Sitting in this theatre it feels like my whole body is vibrating with excitement。 The house lights go dark, King George reminds you to turn off your phone and then those beats start and a man walks on to the stage。 Before he even opens his mouth he exudes elegance and grace。 He asks THE question and his voice is crystal clear and unlike any other I've heard。 This is Aaron Burr, THAT is Giles Terera。 This book is incredible。 Giles' observations are so profound and beautiful that I couldn't read this book fast enough。 I love how parts of the show and Burr's life connected to his own。 Within the pages Giles gets to know Aaron Burr and makes the character his own, I really enjoyed reading about his research process and wanting to know as much as humanly possible about him。 I adored Giles' inquisitiveness, he asks questions about Burr's motivations in his life and what has led him to certain moments and interactions。 After the seeing the show during it's previews stages (which was meant to be after the official opening but due the theatre not being finished it ended up being one of the first handful of performances) it's insane to read about all the stuff going on behind the scenes, it was super interesting that one of his journal entries was from the day I went。 The show was incredible and remains one of the best theatre experiences I've ever had, to know how much stress the cast and crew were under during those stages of previews is intense and yet it seemed so effortless on stage they are honestly superhuman。 Reading this was pure magic, getting to know the man behind Burr was a beautiful experience and I'm blown away by this great man's brain and his outlook on everything。 This book would be ideal for aspiring actors, any-one who is a fan of Hamilton and maybe also American History fans for his incredible takes on Aaron Burr。 Thoroughly loved this and will definitely be one I come back to in the future。 。。。more
