I expect the Revelation Space series can be hard to get into because the characters are all a bit tough to relate to, but the more I read, the more I appreciate all the little stories woven into this universe。 It's a joy to read an author who's much smarter than yourself, and I love all the little surprises when you find out that what you thought was happening was not quite what was actually happening。If you're into the Dune genre of thinky sci-fi, I'd recommend this series。 I've been listening I expect the Revelation Space series can be hard to get into because the characters are all a bit tough to relate to, but the more I read, the more I appreciate all the little stories woven into this universe。 It's a joy to read an author who's much smarter than yourself, and I love all the little surprises when you find out that what you thought was happening was not quite what was actually happening。If you're into the Dune genre of thinky sci-fi, I'd recommend this series。 I've been listening via audibook。 。。。more

I enjoyed this second installation more than the first one - lots of big ideas, and the characters seem more put together。 We also have some Conjoiner characters, so we get to learn about this human society that was teased in the first book。 The Inhibitors come more to the fore as well, building on and extending the lore started in the first book。 The big ideas this time include, but definitely not limited to, parallel universes, inertia alteration, and energy and information transfer between th I enjoyed this second installation more than the first one - lots of big ideas, and the characters seem more put together。 We also have some Conjoiner characters, so we get to learn about this human society that was teased in the first book。 The Inhibitors come more to the fore as well, building on and extending the lore started in the first book。 The big ideas this time include, but definitely not limited to, parallel universes, inertia alteration, and energy and information transfer between the present and the far future。 One really cool small idea was that of using light sails as a stern chaser when you're pursued at relativistic speeds - drop a sail behind you and push it back towards your pursuer。 They're not likely to see it coming, but way easier to score a hit than if you're tossing rocks。The primary action is a race for the weapons that played a big role in the first book。 The Inhibitors have awakened to the presence of humanity, at least in the Resurgam system, and they've run into the Conjoiners elsewhere as well。 The Conjoiners (led by Skade and her mysterious Night Council, which may or may not be only in her head) want the weapons to prepare for the arrival of the wolves (their name for the Inhibitors), and Volyova and Khouri are back as well, wanting the weapons to defend the human colony in the Resurgam system。 We also get more info on the Inhibitors, the Dawn War, and the history of the galaxy。The ending is somewhat abrupt, with a fair bit of the action resolved off-screen, but still a very entertaining read。 On to the next one! 。。。more

This was the second in the trilogy and focused around a starship and a captain who had a weird disease。 There were some excellent characters such as a hyperpig and also super cruel machine human constructs

Ok, this is more like it, Alastair。 Compared to the first one there is MUCH less thesaurus flexing and much more plot。 There are also some old characters we see more of, and some new one that just grow on you。 Plot first - we sort of see the consequences of the actions from book 1, and how all hell is breaking loose。 We also find out more about some side elements of the first book。 But we are still left with many many questions - hopefully these will be answered in book 3。 Now onto my favourite Ok, this is more like it, Alastair。 Compared to the first one there is MUCH less thesaurus flexing and much more plot。 There are also some old characters we see more of, and some new one that just grow on you。 Plot first - we sort of see the consequences of the actions from book 1, and how all hell is breaking loose。 We also find out more about some side elements of the first book。 But we are still left with many many questions - hopefully these will be answered in book 3。 Now onto my favourite part of the book - Scorpio! Redemption Ark is a big giant space opera (and a good one), but it is also a story of, not surprising given the title, many redemptions。 In the midst of a serious threat to mankind, we follow some very well realized characters and learn of pasts that need said redemption。 I found this a good follow up to Revelation Space, with a little bit of 'second book in the trilogy' syndrome。 Everyone seems to be in their places now for the next act。 Redemption Ark is a big giant space opera (and a good one), but it is also a story of, not surprising given the title, many redemptions。 In the midst of a serious threat to mankind, we follow some very well realized characters and learn of pasts that need said redemption。 I found this a good follow up to Revelation Space, with a little bit of 'second book in the trilogy' syndrome。 Everyone seems to be in their places now for the next act。 。。。more

The characters in this book are simply much better than in Revelation Space。 Having read Galactic North and Chasm City, there were familiar characters that I had already been invested in and was happy to have return。 I also enjoyed the new editions of Thorn, Antoinette and Scorpio。 The conflict in this book itself was also more straightforward than in the previous story。

A very intelligently written book, and you'd expect no less from Alastair Reynolds, PhD in Astrophysics。 Improves in most ways on the first book in the series (Revelation Space), but I found the book a bit too lengthy and dry at times。 It did have its epic moments, better characters, and a certain duel, for lack of a better word, between two major characters towards the end was extremely well written, like a couple of chess grandmasters trying to outwit each other。 A very intelligently written book, and you'd expect no less from Alastair Reynolds, PhD in Astrophysics。 Improves in most ways on the first book in the series (Revelation Space), but I found the book a bit too lengthy and dry at times。 It did have its epic moments, better characters, and a certain duel, for lack of a better word, between two major characters towards the end was extremely well written, like a couple of chess grandmasters trying to outwit each other。 。。。more

Redemption Ark is a much improved sequel to Revelation Space, addressing many of the aspects I had issues with in the first novel while maintaining all the qualities that I enjoyed。 It deals with a lot of fascinating scientific concepts and ideas, and these were once again my favourite parts of the book。 “It’s the people who don’t worry—those who never have any doubts that what they’re doing is good and right—they’re the ones that cause the problems。” Character motivations and actions were som Redemption Ark is a much improved sequel to Revelation Space, addressing many of the aspects I had issues with in the first novel while maintaining all the qualities that I enjoyed。 It deals with a lot of fascinating scientific concepts and ideas, and these were once again my favourite parts of the book。 “It’s the people who don’t worry—those who never have any doubts that what they’re doing is good and right—they’re the ones that cause the problems。” Character motivations and actions were something I had an issue with in the first book, and this novel fixed a lot of that for me。 Clavain, Felka, Remontoire, as well as the returning characters from the first book felt more like real people with understandable motivations, making both good and bad decisions on the limited information they had to the best of their ability。 Some of them were also quite likeable and interesting, even if they didn't have the greatest depth。 However, I felt that some of the character relationships, especially the romantic ones were somewhat contrived。 I would never have thought I'd enjoy reading about a sentient pig crime boss named Scorpio, but found everything involving him and the other hyperpigs very interesting。The various worldbuilding elements introduced, such as the hyperpigs and the myriad factions like the Demarchists and the Conjoiners added a lot of depth and immersion to the setting。 We get a much deeper look at the politics and the societal structure of the Conjoiners and their unstable relationship with the Demarchist factions in proximity to Yellowstone, the central planet around which a lot of this conflict occurs。 We also get a closer look at the background politics of Chasm City, which we got a tiny glimpse of in the last book。Being a hard sci-fi book, there is a lot of detail put into the scientific concepts explored and a lot of it is something I enjoy reading, such as the fascinating mechanisms of the Exordium project or the inertia-suppressing technology。 However, I felt on many occasions that it was overexplained and repetitive, with the excessive detail reducing my engagement with the story being told。 There are also various side-plots such as those of Antoinette and Xavier, and while I like reading those sections, there might have been too much focus given to those parts of the story, making the book feel quite lengthy。 I also liked the writing more than in Revelation Space: the dialogue felt less stilted and the way the story unfolded felt a lot more organic and didn't feel as contrived as some of the situations in the previous book。 Reynold's in-world metaphors are also fun to read and feel very appropriate。 The plot had many interesting aspects, the main threat established in the last book comes to the forefront and we find out a lot more about the history of the world, especially the Conjoiner society。 Overall, an engaging sequel to Revelation Space with better, more interesting characters that broadened the scope of the world and introduced many new and fascinating elements。7。3/10 。。。more

4。25 stars but a heck of an improvement over Revalation Space。The beginning was a little slow and I almost gave up on the novel but there are a few things Reynolds does insanely well and I was waiting for the book to hit one of those moments。 For me it was Clavain watching the war from insanely far away seeing the bright flashes of rail gun explosions。Alastair is quickly become a Sci-fi favorite of mine。

Hard to exactly describe these books。 I honestly, while I like them, can only read a reynolds book at a rate of no more than one a year。 I am honestly full on exhausted at the end!! Really it is hard to give the book one overall rating - in many ways the book varies from 2 stars to 5+。 Think Banks + Clancy + Baxter = something all its own。

Matthew Le Croissette

Great ideas and brilliant world-building as always with Reynolds, but this book felt much slower than his others。 Several times characters explained to one another everything that had happened up to that point, which slowed the pace tremendously。 I wonder whether Reynolds was afraid that people would lose the thread along the way!

Alastair Reynolds oce again proves he has big iseas and can bring them across。 Here he provides the reason why the universe is so sparsely populated and what awaits humanity and other races in the far future。 This is woven integrally into the storylines which have been carried through from the first two books and makes for really good, scientific reading, although I have to admit, some of it is beyond my ken! Per ardua ad astra and now onto book 4, with pleasure。

Alastair Reynolds is the king of the space opera genre, and the Revelation Space series may be his best work。 It's not great literature, and it isn't even great speculative fiction in the sense of being a work that posits a plausible future where interesting scientific and philosophical ideas play out。 Other writers do those things better。 But it is a hell of a story told on an epic scale with a cast of well defined characters who come into interesting conflict。 I like the ideas behind the alien Alastair Reynolds is the king of the space opera genre, and the Revelation Space series may be his best work。 It's not great literature, and it isn't even great speculative fiction in the sense of being a work that posits a plausible future where interesting scientific and philosophical ideas play out。 Other writers do those things better。 But it is a hell of a story told on an epic scale with a cast of well defined characters who come into interesting conflict。 I like the ideas behind the alien races - Inhibitors and Pattern Jugglers - and the different factions of humans - Conjoiners, Demarchists, etc。, though I was a little disappointed in the theory behind the mission of the Inhibitors。 I'm hoping that it will turn out in a later books of the series to be something other than is presented here。 The book is a bit long。 The same story could have been told more compactly without losing very much。 It is still a quick read but too long to make me want to binge my way through the series。 I'll read the next one in a few months or maybe next year。 。。。more

My cardinal sin for Reynolds is structural: He jumps between character sets with imbalanced dramatic heft。 You have some characters fighting aliens who are trying to destroy all human life and then you have some characters arguing about local politics on a backwater planet between groups you know little about and care less about。 Or you have characters engaged in strategic battle at near lightspeed over huge time/space scales intercut with someone pouting the AI on her ship isnt what she thought My cardinal sin for Reynolds is structural: He jumps between character sets with imbalanced dramatic heft。 You have some characters fighting aliens who are trying to destroy all human life and then you have some characters arguing about local politics on a backwater planet between groups you know little about and care less about。 Or you have characters engaged in strategic battle at near lightspeed over huge time/space scales intercut with someone pouting the AI on her ship isnt what she thought it was。 It's a complete mismatch for the rest of the dramatic weight。 It would be like watching Jaws and every 10 minutes cutting to people arguing about their fav flavor of ice cream, on the other side of the country。 Sure, maybe in the end they all meet up, but the rest of the time youre just gritting your teeth waiting to get back to the damn shark。 These are issues that Reynolds should understand, sure, but ABSOLUTELY his editor should understand them。Like others, I agree this book should be 400 pages。 Reynolds isn't great with characters。 And a lot of scifi writers aren't and that's okay, to an extent; every writer has their weakness。 But Reynolds needs to work around that weakness。 He does not。 Instead we have batches of characters who are weak, flat or simply not narratively valuable and truly hurts the value of this book as an experience and as a complete text。 。。。more
