Summary

In late 1888, only weeks before his final collapse into madness, Nietzsche (1844-1900) set out to compose his autobiography, and Ecce Homo remains one of the most intriguing yet bizarre examples of the genre ever written。 In this extraordinary work Nietzsche traces his life, work and development as a philosopher, examines the heroes he has identified with, struggled against and then overcome - Schopenhauer, Wagner, Socrates, Christ - and predicts the cataclysmic impact of his 'forthcoming revelation of all values'。 Both self-celebrating and self-mocking, penetrating and strange, Ecce Homo gives the final, definitive expression to Nietzsche's main beliefs and is in every way his last testament。

Having read this for the first time in many years, a review would be prudent。Nietzsche's last written work is a proper addendum and conclusion to the body of his scholarship and literature。 Unapologetically arrogant and self-assured, an infamous life well-lived comes to "Dionysus vs。 Christ。"Neitzsche is a polarizing figure but even among his admirers, Ecce Homo is arguably an unnecessary addition to the Nietsche canon。 However, it does offer some unique insight to the man's mind, even if this i Having read this for the first time in many years, a review would be prudent。Nietzsche's last written work is a proper addendum and conclusion to the body of his scholarship and literature。 Unapologetically arrogant and self-assured, an infamous life well-lived comes to "Dionysus vs。 Christ。"Neitzsche is a polarizing figure but even among his admirers, Ecce Homo is arguably an unnecessary addition to the Nietsche canon。 However, it does offer some unique insight to the man's mind, even if this insight is shrouded in artful obscurantism, irony, and copious amounts of philosophical venom。The author may not have successfully avoided the sainthood he admitted to fearing, as to this day an astute observer cannot help but notice the Nietzschean influence on postmodern scrutiny, criticism of rationalism, and acceptance of relativity。 Ecce Homo feels to be the final attempt to secure the place of the author's project: to destroy and condemn tradition and convention so mankind as we know it can be overcome。 There is no attempt here to replace the foundation that is destroyed, but rather to destroy it and watch the structure above collapse。I grant 3 stars, because it's incredibly readable and enjoyable, but still unnecessary。 。。。more

Definitely provides a good segue into the rest of Nietzsche's literature。 However, my one problem with this book is Nietzsche's unrelenting attack on all of German culture。 While many of his criticisms are valid, it comes off as him automatically attacking anything and everything German。 It also feels out of place at times。 Nevertheless, the book is a very unique autobiography that does offer a lot of insight into Nietzsche's perspective on his own works, especially Thus Spoke Zarathustra。 Definitely provides a good segue into the rest of Nietzsche's literature。 However, my one problem with this book is Nietzsche's unrelenting attack on all of German culture。 While many of his criticisms are valid, it comes off as him automatically attacking anything and everything German。 It also feels out of place at times。 Nevertheless, the book is a very unique autobiography that does offer a lot of insight into Nietzsche's perspective on his own works, especially Thus Spoke Zarathustra。 。。。more

nietzsche criticizing christian morals for 144 pages, i cannot but only enjoy it。honestly i kinda follow his movement of thought very closely because i do not find him at all headlock and i am serious, zero influence total independence。 during my reading i had this lucidity that i probably don't have anymore because it's way too tiring for me and my physiology。 i don't know why i liked it so much but i know that i understood some fundamentals things that will be useful to me。it was great because nietzsche criticizing christian morals for 144 pages, i cannot but only enjoy it。honestly i kinda follow his movement of thought very closely because i do not find him at all headlock and i am serious, zero influence total independence。 during my reading i had this lucidity that i probably don't have anymore because it's way too tiring for me and my physiology。 i don't know why i liked it so much but i know that i understood some fundamentals things that will be useful to me。it was great because some times i just stopped at a certain point to think about what i was reading, coming up with a specific idea and then go back to my reading and read word for word what i had just said in my head just before and honestly i don’t rlly know why (again) but i felt understood by myself。 。。。more
