Summary

Frankly in Love meets Shark Tank in this feel-good romantic comedy about two entrepreneurial Korean American teens who butt heads—and maybe fall in love—while running competing Korean beauty businesses at their high school。

There’s nothing Valerie Kwon loves more than making a good sale。 Together with her cousin Charlie, they run V&C K-BEAUTY, their school’s most successful student-run enterprise。 With each sale, Valerie gets closer to taking her beloved and adventurous halmeoni to her dream city, Paris。

Enter the new kid in class, Wes Jung, who is determined to pursue music after graduation despite his parents’ major disapproval。 When his classmates clamor to buy the K-pop branded beauty products his mom gave him to “make new friends,” he sees an opportunity—one that may be the key to help him pay for the music school tuition he knows his parents won’t cover…

What he doesn’t realize, though, is that he is now V&C K-BEAUTY’s biggest competitor。

Stakes are high as Valerie and Wes try to outsell each other, make the most money, and take the throne for the best business in school—all while trying to resist the undeniable spark that’s crackling between them。 From hiring spies to all-or-nothing bets, the competition is much more than either of them bargained for。

But one thing is clear: only one Korean business can come out on top。

Yeah! I definitely recommend this book。 。。。more

I started this book thinking it was so cute。 I fan-girled over Val’s cute grandma, discussion of Korean beauty products, and Korean food。 However, further into the book (and deeper into the plot), I really disliked how the personalities and motivations of Val and Wes evolved。 Val is selfish and rude to her cousin and business partner - Charlie。 Wes lies to his parents about his future and his ways to secretly fund his music school aspirations。 Most teens and Kdrama lovers will appreciate this bo I started this book thinking it was so cute。 I fan-girled over Val’s cute grandma, discussion of Korean beauty products, and Korean food。 However, further into the book (and deeper into the plot), I really disliked how the personalities and motivations of Val and Wes evolved。 Val is selfish and rude to her cousin and business partner - Charlie。 Wes lies to his parents about his future and his ways to secretly fund his music school aspirations。 Most teens and Kdrama lovers will appreciate this book, and those are mainly the people that I think I want to recommend it to。 。。。more

So good。 I was smiling like crazy while listening to the audiobook while on walkes。 The story is easy and made fun。 If you dont like the usual tropes in these kinds of books, it might not be for you, but I really liked it。 The korean element also worked well。 I dont really know if there were any negativ things。 While the main characters can be a little frustrating some times, its done in a way that shows their flaws and allows them to grow。

This was really cute。 I enjoyed it。

This book was everything I wanted and more :)This was a cute rivals to lovers romance with a lot of heart and loveable characters!I really liked the dual POV and felt it gave a lot of depth to both Valerie and Wes。 They each had unique problems and personalities and the pacing was really smooth。 They each had quirks and flaws that felt very realistic and believable。 And even though they seemed different, they both just wanted to be seen as worthy to their parents and make something of themselves This book was everything I wanted and more :)This was a cute rivals to lovers romance with a lot of heart and loveable characters!I really liked the dual POV and felt it gave a lot of depth to both Valerie and Wes。 They each had unique problems and personalities and the pacing was really smooth。 They each had quirks and flaws that felt very realistic and believable。 And even though they seemed different, they both just wanted to be seen as worthy to their parents and make something of themselves。I absolutely adored Valerie’s relationship with her Halmeoni。 Even though Valerie had a fraught relationship with her Umma, she could always turn to her Halmeoni and the way they lifted each other up made me tear up because it was so precious and sweet。 Valerie desperately wants to raise money to send herself and her Halmeoni on a trip to Paris。 The business isn’t just a personal venture for her。She feels as though she is running out of time with her Halmeoni and that this next summer may be her last chance to go on this adventure。 It doesn’t help that her Umma doesn’t see her business as legitimate and constantly compares Valerie to her older sister。 All Valerie wants is for her mother to value her just as she is。 Wes desperately wants the money to pursue his dream of music school even though his father disapproves。 He has the same sense of urgency as Valerie snd so it really raised the stakes of the plot。 The relationship between Valerie and Wes was really sweet as well。 I thought their chemistry was well written and they really were adorable together。 It was a nice and breezy read that also managed to have emotional depth at the same time。 I really liked the idea that standing up for yourself is a kind of freedom, even if your parents or whoever else still doesn’t fully see and understand you。 To me that was very realistic while still managing to have a heartfelt and empowering ending。All in all, I really liked the book and I also really liked the discussion of what it means to be Korean American and not really knowing where you belong。 You can tell in the writing how much love the author has for her Korean heritage and I really loved how Korean culture was infused in the story! The book also made me very hungry with all of the food mentioned, and now I’m also craving Hi-Chews again even though I haven’t had them in a MINUTEI’ve really been enjoying all of the romcoms coming out recently! 。。。more

Valerie Kwon has a business with her cousin at school where they sell Korean beauty products。 Valerie is saving her money to take her grandmother on a trip to Paris in the summer before she starts college。 In their senior year, Wes Jung moves to town。 His mother works for a company that manages a popular K-Pop band。 When Wes’s mother gives him some K-Pop cosmetics to bring to school to give to his friends, he learns what a lucrative business it could be to sell them。 Wes wants to save money to p Valerie Kwon has a business with her cousin at school where they sell Korean beauty products。 Valerie is saving her money to take her grandmother on a trip to Paris in the summer before she starts college。 In their senior year, Wes Jung moves to town。 His mother works for a company that manages a popular K-Pop band。 When Wes’s mother gives him some K-Pop cosmetics to bring to school to give to his friends, he learns what a lucrative business it could be to sell them。 Wes wants to save money to pursue music studies in college, which his parents don’t approve of。 Wes becomes major competition for Valerie’s business。 Their competition gets intense, leading them to make an all or nothing bet。 What they don’t count on is falling for each other, but only one business can win in the end。The idea of student run businesses in high schools has pros and cons。 It’s a great way for young people to learn about how to run a business and manage money。 There were a couple of other student businesses, other than Valerie’s and Wes’s, but those were the two cosmetic ones so they were direct competitors。 There were a few opportunities throughout the years for the businesses to sell their products and earn awards。There were also consequences to these kinds of businesses that were addressed in the story。 The students were earning real money with these businesses。 That made the stakes much higher since Valerie and Wes had big plans for their potential earnings。 This also made them take chances with their businesses that had moral and legal consequences。 Valerie and Wes had to deal with the consequences of breaking the rules with their businesses。 This story accurately represented what could go wrong with a student run business。Made in Korea is a great young adult novel!Thank you Simon and Schuster for providing a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review。 。。。more

I bought this book because I wanted to read more Asian representation and I was in a mood for romance。 What I liked:I mostly liked the character。 I liked that all main characters felt thought through and the conflict didn't happen because some one was a mean human being。 I loved that they were able to hold good conversations and it wasn't a childish way of making the conflict worse。 I really liked the plot too, it was cute and fun。 What I didn't like/ Would have wished for:I don't really know an I bought this book because I wanted to read more Asian representation and I was in a mood for romance。 What I liked:I mostly liked the character。 I liked that all main characters felt thought through and the conflict didn't happen because some one was a mean human being。 I loved that they were able to hold good conversations and it wasn't a childish way of making the conflict worse。 I really liked the plot too, it was cute and fun。 What I didn't like/ Would have wished for:I don't really know anything to wish for, I might only say the reason I don't give it five stars, and that is because it is a very simple story line。 And for a book to give five stars I need to quite love it or it to make me think and reflect some more。 However I really enjoyed this book and definitely recommend it。 It was a great read。 My rating system:5 Stars: If I couldn't put a book down and highly enjoyed it。 In addition, if it made me think and reflect it's a huge plus。4 Stars: I very much liked it it gave me feels, and I would definitely reread。 However enjoyed it alittle less then a 5 Star book。3 Stars: It was a nice read I liked it but it doesn't make me feel as invested/ involved as a 4 star book。2 Stars: It was alright but maybe not my cup of tea。1 Star: I must have hated it 。。。more

The characters grew incredibly personal to me, and I think I developed a fictional crush on Charlie, the protagonist's cousin。 Overall, the concept of writing a story around a teen-run small business is very relevant to today, as we are seeing more and more young entrepreneurs。 This book manages to encapsulate the minds of high school seniors in a natural way, something that usually goes painfully wrong in the world of YA novels。 The story deals with common themes in today's society, such as following after one's dreams and paving the way for one's success, even if it means conflict。 Although built on realistic circumstances, the originality was inspiring and new! Valerie's idiosyncrasy for popping specific Hi-Chews for specific occasions was entirely fresh and entertaining。 Originality is spewing through each and every bit of the text, including the way Valerie chose to deface Wes' shirt for propaganda。 Definitely some romantic tension there!I admittedly choked up on several segments with Halmeoni, who is another lovable character- quirky, cute, and adventurous。In the end, this book is everything one would look for in Teen-lit, angsty and heartwarming in perfect moderation。 Although YA is not my preferred genre of literature, Made in Korea proved to be a beautifully written exception。 Even if you're not into this genre, give it a go。 And if you are interested in Korean culture, give it even more of a go! Well done, Sarah Suk! 。。。more

I think Made In Korea was a great, heartfelt debut novel。 As I read, I couldn’t help but see myself in both Valerie and Wes。 Valerie’s ambition, Wes’s kind-hearted and considerate personality, and theme of K-beauty was definitely what kept me reading。 Characters:Yes, I wasn’t exactly in love with Valerie and her personality, but I understood her motives and frankly, it was refreshing to see such a headstrong female protagonist。 Now, we have Wes。 Wes was just a total sweetheart。 He’s so kind and I think Made In Korea was a great, heartfelt debut novel。 As I read, I couldn’t help but see myself in both Valerie and Wes。 Valerie’s ambition, Wes’s kind-hearted and considerate personality, and theme of K-beauty was definitely what kept me reading。 Characters:Yes, I wasn’t exactly in love with Valerie and her personality, but I understood her motives and frankly, it was refreshing to see such a headstrong female protagonist。 Now, we have Wes。 Wes was just a total sweetheart。 He’s so kind and thoughtful and cute。 He’s well-mannered and I could relate to his troubles of speaking up and sharing his true passions to his parents。 (I think it’s something a lot of us—especially Asian-Americans) can relate to。) Plot: As for the plot, I was really intrigued by the uniqueness of it all。 The entrepreneurial spirit of competition and selling Korean makeup/skincare raised my interest, and the thought of combining unique ideas with tropes (enemies to lovers) added a nice twist to the typical YA romance。Romance: I am a huge fan of YA romance (I guess you could call me a hopeless romantic), but truthfully I have to say that the romance felt a little lackluster。 I couldn’t really feel the chemistry between Wes and Valerie。 It felt a little too insta-lovey and sometimes the lines in the novel felt overly cheesy。 Concluding Thoughts:Overall, would I recommend this to a reader who is solely interested in reading YA romance? Probably not。 But I would recommend it to someone who is looking for a refreshing and quick read with themes relating to k-beauty, dreams and passion, and finding your own identity。 :) 。。。more

As an Asian I found that I relate to Valerie and Wes way more than I could relate to American teens。 They had the same problems I go through。 We kind of have same parents who wants us to be doctors 😂I am seriously in love with Wes。It was so good to see someone standing up to their parents saying that they don't WANT TO BE A DAMN DOCTOR and want to do what they want。They way Valerie stood up to her mother for always comparing her to her older sister。 I loved her for that。 And don't even get me started on the relationship of those sisters as if it's not what me and my sisters are like 😂I long to have a relationship with my grandparents like the one that Valerie had with her Halmonie but unfortunately my grandparents on both sides are dead。 May they rest in peace。 Halmonie treated Valerie the same way my grandma used to treat me when I was a little kid and I adored Halmonie and Valerie's relation。The thing that impressed me most is that the writer didn't write some perfect characters rather at a point Valerie was gonna do a huge mistake for which I could have hated her forever! But as the story unfolds Valerie learn her mistakes and learn the lessons she needed to。 We love that kind of growth。 。。。more
