Summary

In the epic fifth installment in this “compulsively readable” (People) series, Galbraith’s “irresistible hero and heroine” (USA Today) take on the decades-old cold case of a missing doctor, one which may be their grisliest yet。

Private Detective Cormoran Strike is visiting his family in Cornwall when he is approached by a woman asking for help finding her mother, Margot Bamborough—who went missing in mysterious circumstances in 1974。

Strike has never tackled a cold case before, let alone one forty years old。 But despite the slim chance of success, he is intrigued and takes it on; adding to the long list of cases that he and his partner in the agency, Robin Ellacott, are currently working on。 And Robin herself is also juggling a messy divorce and unwanted male attention, as well as battling her own feelings about Strike。

As Strike and Robin investigate Margot’s disappearance, they come up against a fiendishly complex case with leads that include tarot cards, a psychopathic serial killer and witnesses who cannot all be trusted。 And they learn that even cases decades old can prove to be deadly 。 。 。

I've seen people saying they're not going to read the book because the plot is transphobic。One of the villains is a man who sometimes wears a woman's wig when attempting to lure his victims。 He's not trans, nobody says he's trans, none of the characters are trans。 There are a couple of mentions of that villain cross-dressing。 Cross-dressing is not the same thing as transgender。 There is nothing about trans people in this book, there is no attempt to portray any of the villains as trans, and ther I've seen people saying they're not going to read the book because the plot is transphobic。One of the villains is a man who sometimes wears a woman's wig when attempting to lure his victims。 He's not trans, nobody says he's trans, none of the characters are trans。 There are a couple of mentions of that villain cross-dressing。 Cross-dressing is not the same thing as transgender。 There is nothing about trans people in this book, there is no attempt to portray any of the villains as trans, and there is nothing transphobic。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 if u feel uncomfortable with JKR’s views, i suggest buying this second hand (there is no non-period accurate transphobia that wasn’t important to the plot)。 i highly recommend this book。 one of my faves so far。 read the whole thing in two evenings。use of cross dressing was used more to criticise gender roles and views on women and feminist (a main theme of the novel) rather than to paint a negative picture of the trans community。 it was made clear that the man who dressed as a woman was NOT tran if u feel uncomfortable with JKR’s views, i suggest buying this second hand (there is no non-period accurate transphobia that wasn’t important to the plot)。 i highly recommend this book。 one of my faves so far。 read the whole thing in two evenings。use of cross dressing was used more to criticise gender roles and views on women and feminist (a main theme of the novel) rather than to paint a negative picture of the trans community。 it was made clear that the man who dressed as a woman was NOT trans but only did so to exploit the characteristics commonly, and wrongly, attributed to women 。。。more

Good read。 Best in the serried so far。 :)

Had me captivated from start to finish, as opposed to my usual just-grab-my-attention-near-the-end。 Was very happy to finish such a long book in only a little over a month but will be glad to carry around something lighter for a change! You know something is good when you’re googling locations and all sorts of references。

Far far too long。 I would have given it more stars if it was half the length。

This was very good。 The story is a bit convoluted at times, but still。 The flow of the story keeps you interested。

I really enjoyed this book。 I did the audiobook which is a daunting 32 hours long but there wasn't any time where I was bored。 I think she's really masterful at unfolding the story over time to keep you guessing and interested until the end。 I really enjoyed this book。 I did the audiobook which is a daunting 32 hours long but there wasn't any time where I was bored。 I think she's really masterful at unfolding the story over time to keep you guessing and interested until the end。 。。。more

It took me FOR。EVER to finish this。 I think I r been reading too many murder mysteries/thrillers that I’m burned out on the genre 🤷🏻‍♀️。

Good lord this was a behemoth。 And unnecessarily so。 In an attempt to make as little contribution to JKR as possible while also nabbing these 900+ pages for Goodreads, I got this from the library and will not be rating it。 I will say though - great mystery, great characters, far far too long。 It might have helped the length a bit to cut out the several references to a serial killer dressing up as a woman in order to lure his victims。 This was mentioned several times for no apparent reason。 It ha Good lord this was a behemoth。 And unnecessarily so。 In an attempt to make as little contribution to JKR as possible while also nabbing these 900+ pages for Goodreads, I got this from the library and will not be rating it。 I will say though - great mystery, great characters, far far too long。 It might have helped the length a bit to cut out the several references to a serial killer dressing up as a woman in order to lure his victims。 This was mentioned several times for no apparent reason。 It had absolutely no effect on the plot in any way。 。。。more

When I finished book #4 of this crime novel series, I desperately wanted to stay in the world of London detective partners Cormoran and Robin。 So book #5 held out that promise, but in the end, I think that it would have been better to leave me wanting more。 "Troubled Blood" is a perfectly fine crime novel that held my interest to the end - I mean, Rowling IS a terrific writer - but it just didn't feel as tightly crafted as the prior books。 For all of the gore that we had to get through, I was ho When I finished book #4 of this crime novel series, I desperately wanted to stay in the world of London detective partners Cormoran and Robin。 So book #5 held out that promise, but in the end, I think that it would have been better to leave me wanting more。 "Troubled Blood" is a perfectly fine crime novel that held my interest to the end - I mean, Rowling IS a terrific writer - but it just didn't feel as tightly crafted as the prior books。 For all of the gore that we had to get through, I was hoping for a really sweet romantic reward at the end, but it didn't quite deliver。I also have to say that I'm pretty sure I could have lived my life without the description of the "snuff video" - again, Rowling is an excellent writer, and the brief description of a horrific episode of assault and femicide was stomach-churning and haunting。 This book definitely took on the topic of sexual violence against women, and that should serve as a trigger warning for anyone sensitive to the topic。All in all, it's an okay crime novel but nothing outstanding, and a bit winding all over the place。 。。。more

My rating is more 3。5 instead of just 3 stars。 For those who have not read the book and may not because of the 1 star given by people who have not read the book because of their issues with JK and her previous comments that have been viewed as a disrespect to/for the trans community, give the book a try if you like the previous books in the series because this book did not have anything to do with having the "villain" being a cross dresser。 There isn't any cross dressing in this book, just a man My rating is more 3。5 instead of just 3 stars。 For those who have not read the book and may not because of the 1 star given by people who have not read the book because of their issues with JK and her previous comments that have been viewed as a disrespect to/for the trans community, give the book a try if you like the previous books in the series because this book did not have anything to do with having the "villain" being a cross dresser。 There isn't any cross dressing in this book, just a man who may or may not have put on a woman's wig and coat in order to get closer to his intended victim(s)。Having said that even if there had been what would be the big deal? For decades there have been movies with the theme of men dressing up as women。 Some Like It Hot not to mention all of the Madea movies are about men dressing up as women or a man dressed up as a woman playing a woman。 In Some Like It Hot it is to avoid gangsters。 Tyler Perry is a very wealthy man because of the Madea movies。 And lets not forget about Victor Victoria。 There was a tv show decades ago with Tom Hanks as one of the leads who dressed up as a woman along with his friend in order to live in a hotel for women only because they could not afford a decent apartment in New York。 。。。more

Another sequel。 Troubled Blood continues Robin and Strike's investigation business and relationship misunderstandings。 The story dragged a little in the middle as they investigated the primary case。 However, I think this increased the reward when things came together at the end。 As a sign of a good mystery, I want to go back and read the book again to look for all the subtle clues。 Alas, to many other books are calling to me。 Another sequel。 Troubled Blood continues Robin and Strike's investigation business and relationship misunderstandings。 The story dragged a little in the middle as they investigated the primary case。 However, I think this increased the reward when things came together at the end。 As a sign of a good mystery, I want to go back and read the book again to look for all the subtle clues。 Alas, to many other books are calling to me。 。。。more

I'm loving this book。 The story has that quality in it that does not let you put it down and when you have to, you look for excuses to get back to it。 I'm over 400 pages into it, and that's only half done and that's a good feeling。 I'm loving this book。 The story has that quality in it that does not let you put it down and when you have to, you look for excuses to get back to it。 I'm over 400 pages into it, and that's only half done and that's a good feeling。 。。。more

This book was looooong, but it was totally worth it。 I really do enjoy the dynamic between Strike and Robin and I like that they are both flawed people who are trudging along like the rest of the world。 I really like their character arcs over the series as a whole and I’m interested to see where it leads。

At almost a thousand pages this book covers over a year in the life of the two main protagonists, Cormoran Strike and Robin Ellacott, and their detective agency。 This is a far longer book than the previous books in the series and I felt Robert Galbraith, aka J。 K。 Rowling, went all Harry Potter in broad reach of this novel。 I would have liked the book more had it focused mainly on a forty year old unsolved missing person case instead of dwelling on personal problems and going into great detail a At almost a thousand pages this book covers over a year in the life of the two main protagonists, Cormoran Strike and Robin Ellacott, and their detective agency。 This is a far longer book than the previous books in the series and I felt Robert Galbraith, aka J。 K。 Rowling, went all Harry Potter in broad reach of this novel。 I would have liked the book more had it focused mainly on a forty year old unsolved missing person case instead of dwelling on personal problems and going into great detail about the current cases the agency was handling。Forty years ago, Dr。 Margot Bamborough left her medical practice to meet a friend and was never seen again, leaving behind a troubled marriage and a two year old daughter。 After all these years, the daughter has reached out to Strike to see if he can persevere where the police failed。 Relying heavily on the case notes of the decective who was leading the investigation at the time of the disappearance, but who was subsequently removed after a mental breakdown, Strike and Ellacott try and make sense of the detective's obsession with astrology and a serial killer who was active at the time。 Was the detective right and the good doctor was another victim of the serial killer? If so, how did he manage to abduct her in the middle of London with so few credible witnesses? And where did he hide the body?As stated, this would have been a terrific book had the author focused mainly on this case。 Unfortunately, there were so many subplots and minor characters and drama that detracted from the main story line that the book got mired down in details at times。 The pacing of the novel was good, however, despite all of the side turns that the book took。 3。5 stars。 。。。more

Loved the book。 Very detailed, never boring。 Did not see the ending and that is a plus。 Hope there will be more in the series。

There were many parts of this book that I couldn’t read, but it’s an excellent mystery and I do so enjoy the characters。

Typical of what I have come to expect in this series。 I am only miffed that this was over 900 pages and basically encompassed my entire reading month of June。 The mystery was fantastic and I didn't suspect the culprit whatsoever。 I liked that the other cases included victories in solving as well。 Robin and Strike continue to be the most precious not-couple and I love watching their relationship slowly grow。 Really my only gripe was that this was so long。 Typical of what I have come to expect in this series。 I am only miffed that this was over 900 pages and basically encompassed my entire reading month of June。 The mystery was fantastic and I didn't suspect the culprit whatsoever。 I liked that the other cases included victories in solving as well。 Robin and Strike continue to be the most precious not-couple and I love watching their relationship slowly grow。 Really my only gripe was that this was so long。 。。。more

JK Rowling needs a better editor。 Like the Harry Potter series, the longer it went on, the longer the books got。 This would have gotten 5 stars if it was 250-300 pages shorter, but at 944 pages it was just too long with 3-4 too many red herrings。 I have loved this series but she really needs to cut out all the superfluous information and lives of every Employee of the Strike agency and focus on plot and solving the murder mystery。I look forward to the 6th installment as long as its no more than JK Rowling needs a better editor。 Like the Harry Potter series, the longer it went on, the longer the books got。 This would have gotten 5 stars if it was 250-300 pages shorter, but at 944 pages it was just too long with 3-4 too many red herrings。 I have loved this series but she really needs to cut out all the superfluous information and lives of every Employee of the Strike agency and focus on plot and solving the murder mystery。I look forward to the 6th installment as long as its no more than 500-600 pages。 。。。more

Just wow!! Undoubtedly the best in the Strike series, I am already excited about the next one and so happy that JKR has decided to write atleast 10 of these。 Being a murder mystery, you would feel that a 1000 page book is pretty dragged out, but I did not。。 her writing kept me hooked and I am glad that she decided to narrate this one so detailed。

This book is one of those that once you start reading - you just can’t stop and it is long! Enjoyed immensely。

The author certainly drew a believable character in Cormoran Strike。 The story is about a woman who wants the mystery of her mother's disappearance 45 years earlier to be solved and she pays Cormoran to solve it。 The gathering of clues and the talking to witnesses who are still living takes over a year。 The ending is great。 This is a huge book。 The author certainly drew a believable character in Cormoran Strike。 The story is about a woman who wants the mystery of her mother's disappearance 45 years earlier to be solved and she pays Cormoran to solve it。 The gathering of clues and the talking to witnesses who are still living takes over a year。 The ending is great。 This is a huge book。 。。。more

One of the best books in the Cormoran Strike series, hands down。Though the book is lengthy, RG has handled the pacing and progression quite well。 The actual mystery or 'reveal' factor has a good pay-off at the end, and while the major red herring may be obvious, the final solution is most definitely not。 Another key observation is that the author has consciously toned down the character arc of both the protagonists and focused heavily on the cases at hand。 I think this has managed to rebalance t One of the best books in the Cormoran Strike series, hands down。Though the book is lengthy, RG has handled the pacing and progression quite well。 The actual mystery or 'reveal' factor has a good pay-off at the end, and while the major red herring may be obvious, the final solution is most definitely not。 Another key observation is that the author has consciously toned down the character arc of both the protagonists and focused heavily on the cases at hand。 I think this has managed to rebalance the equation that was slightly shaken with Lethal White。 The book also scales the entire PI short cases to make the experience a lot more engaging, as you're a part of Strike's detective agency。 I'd recommend not missing this one。 Can't wait for Strike#6! 。。。more

The book was ok。 So far the worst of the series。 I think it was made a big thick book just for the sake of adding descriptions and adding thoughts from the characters。 None of those added things made the book any better。 With 300 or 400 pages less it would have been a much better book
