Summary

Welcome to the Fayz! This is Book 1 in the series that Stephen King calls a 'driving, torrential narrative'。 In the blink of an eye all the adults disappear in a small town in southern California and no one knows why。 Cut off from the outside world, those that are left are trapped, and there's no help on the way。 Sam Temple and his friends must do all they can to survive。 Chaos rules the streets。 Gangs begin to form。 Sides are chosen - strong or weak。 Cruel or humane。 And then there are those who begin to develop powers。。。The Gone series is Lord of the Flies for the 21st century。 In turns breathtaking, harrowing, and utterly terrifying。 Its complex characters and moral dilemmas will delight fans of The Hunger Games, Divergent and The Maze Runner。 This is dystopian fiction at its best。 Have you got all 6 titles in the New York Times bestselling saga: Gone, Hunger, Lies, Plague, Fear, and Light? "I am now free to leave the Fayz, but my time there was well spent。" (Stephen King)。 If you love Gone, be sure not to miss Michael's new series Front Lines - it's WWII but not as you know it! Michael Grant has lived an exciting, fast-paced life。 He moved in with his wife Katherine Applegate after only 24 hours。 He has co-authored over 160 books but promises that everything he writes is like nothing you've ever read before! If the Gone series has left you hungry for more from the dark genius of YA fiction, look out for the BZRK trilogy: BZRK, BZRK Reloaded, BZRK Apocalypse and the terrifying Messenger of Fear and its sequel The Tattooed Heart。 Michael is a World Book Day author for 2017。

An incredible story。 Fast-paced and exciting。

Interesting and different plot。 Basic summary: all people from the age of 15 and up disappear and the rest of the kids are left to fend for themselves。 The catch is that some of the kids left behind have started to mutate and delevop strange abilities。

There are a lot of things I could say about this book。 It is the most realistic apocalypse book I’ve ever read (I mean it has magic but that isn’t what I mean) It it the most realistic representation of young people I’ve ever read。 It is the most well thought out beginning to a huge series I’ve ever read。 But what I really want to say about this book is that it is depressing AF。 I get that it would be sad, but JEEZ! It was honestly too much for me。 I’m not into deep reads, hence why I read about magic and the adult free apocalypse, y’know, light stuff。 But this? THIS! This was so much more than the light hearted shizle I’m used to。I can’t really go into anything without major spoilers, but I just want to come out and say something controversial。 I love Caine。 Oh, he is 100% a sociopath, but I still love him。 Not in love, just think he is one of the best written literary bad guys ever。 Mostly because he isn’t exactly a bad guy。 I’m sick of the evil villain whose plans are always surprisingly selfless in the way they have no goal and are just their to torture others。 But I get Caine。 He has a purpose and goals。 And don’t even pretend he wouldn’t be a friggin fantastic politician。Something else that really needs to be said is why I think every other negative review for this book is wrong。 This isn’t even me being bias, I only gave it three stars! So many reviews are going on about how all of the girls in this book are weak and powerless and how sexist the author must be。 So my question to those reviewers is do you really think the only power someone can have is from brute force? Astrid is an actual genius who you literally plans out all of the big acts that Sam does。 Mary is legit a saint who has the power to make every single person in that town do whatever she requests。 Dahra is the only nurse who is keeping people alive。 Lana is a friggin miracle walking。 And Diana? Well she is also a sociopath, but she has the other sociopath wrapped around her finger。 So, no, the girls in this book are not powerless。 (Mini rant over)Now for why I only gave this book three stars (other than it being very depressing) This simply isn’t the kind of story I’m going to continue for 9 books。 If it was a three-maybe ever five book series, I’d be all over this, but there simply isn’t enough that can be done with the plot to keep me going for that long。 So I’m not even going to put myself through it all, I’m just stopping here。 And btw, I did look up where the plot was going, didn’t just decide the plot would suck。 But it does。 Oh and also the blatant racism was awful to read too。 I get that Quinn being awful to everyone is part of the plot。 But him refusing to acknowledge Edilio is from Honduras not Mexico and constantly saying he is an illegal immigrant just made a lot of this book kinda sour。 And maybe (a big maybe) it would have been okay if he had been called out on it, but he wasn’t。 It was just Quinn ‘acting out’。 Recommending this book to anyone with a rock for a heart。 。。。more

I read this book last year after many years of not finishing it。 And I personally really liked it。It was my first fantasy/dystopian book and it was very good。I really enjoyed the “concept” of everyone over 15 disappearing (that is not a spoiler)。 And the characters and the actions really catches me。 But I could never bring myself to continue this series since it’s tooooo long。 Even when I wanted to。 All in all pretty good, but remember this was my first fantasy/dystopian book 📚

Great book, a little disturbing。 But when you get over that initial part of the babies then it's very interesting。 Great book, a little disturbing。 But when you get over that initial part of the babies then it's very interesting。 。。。more

Enjoyable and a quick read, but unsure if I'll continiue this series。 I picked it up since I never finished it back when I was 10 - 12 years old, and I've noticed recently that I enjoy those I pick back up but a lot less than I used to。 I still love YA, just not the same kind that used to be my favorites。 Enjoyable and a quick read, but unsure if I'll continiue this series。 I picked it up since I never finished it back when I was 10 - 12 years old, and I've noticed recently that I enjoy those I pick back up but a lot less than I used to。 I still love YA, just not the same kind that used to be my favorites。 。。。more

The first novel in the ‘Gone’ series, and loaned to me by a young reader, deeply into dystopian writing。Although I wearied after a while with the speed at which the narrative moved and the increasingly Marvel-esque deployment of super-powers, on the whole I thought this was terrific。 I would have lapped it up when I was a teenager, and it wasn’t difficult to enjoy as an adult if truth be told。The obvious appeal to a young reader is that it’s about people their age。 And then you undermine the wor The first novel in the ‘Gone’ series, and loaned to me by a young reader, deeply into dystopian writing。Although I wearied after a while with the speed at which the narrative moved and the increasingly Marvel-esque deployment of super-powers, on the whole I thought this was terrific。 I would have lapped it up when I was a teenager, and it wasn’t difficult to enjoy as an adult if truth be told。The obvious appeal to a young reader is that it’s about people their age。 And then you undermine the world they live in by removing all adults from it and cast them into an enclosed and baffling environment, fraught with change, that they have to make sense of and survive in。 Ballard-like, the people who seem to fare most comfortably are the deranged and disturbed, and they are opposed by those who are basically good。 But, as my sister said to me in a recent letter apropos the contemporary grown-up world of politics, ‘the honest chap is not particularly good at outwitting the dishonest’; and in ‘Gone’, Sam Temple has to work hard to calculate how to counter the megalomania of Caine Soren。In a nutshell, one ordinary morning in Perdido Beach, a small coastal town with surf, a golf club, MacDonald’s, a nuclear reactor and not much else, all adults and children over 15 simply disappear。 Those who are left have to make do。 Almost immediately, the bullies emerge, and they are soon supplemented by the children from Coates Academy, a private school for psychologically troubled kids pretty much dumped their by their parents。 The situation is complicated further by several children acquiring ‘powers’: one is a healer, one can move fast, a few can move things about or teleport。 Sam has hands which project a burning, laser-like light。Moreover, it’s not only the children who are changing。 The local coyote packs are operating differently, and their leader can talk rudimentarily。 He is in thrall to ‘The Darkness’, a malignant force of unknown origin lurking in a cave in the desert。And what will happen when the older children reach the age of 15? What role might autistic Little Pete be playing in what goes on? And the nuclear reactor, still operating on automatic and providing electricity, is it responsible for the changes? Where did ‘the barrier’ come from?Well, I’m going to have to read the other five books in the series to find out。 。。。more

This book did not go where I thought it would。 And that was refreshing。 An interesting, riveting, jaw dropping ride of a book。 I can’t wait to read the rest of the series。 Glad they changed the cover art。 The original covers is why I never read it before now。 Though some of the characters can be stereotypical。

I picked this book up as my kids loved them。 I found the plot interesting, liked the multiple view points, and found the characters believable and deep。 However, I was listening to this book, and found the use of the word "SAID" INCREDIBLY frustrating。 Synonyms or more expressive language out there for all to use。 The overall writing sounded like a 5th grader wrote it, while the themes were more YA。 I picked this book up as my kids loved them。 I found the plot interesting, liked the multiple view points, and found the characters believable and deep。 However, I was listening to this book, and found the use of the word "SAID" INCREDIBLY frustrating。 Synonyms or more expressive language out there for all to use。 The overall writing sounded like a 5th grader wrote it, while the themes were more YA。 。。。more

I read this on the suggestion from my partner as he is currently reading the series。 It's not something I normally pick up to read but I did enjoy most of it。 Although, I will admit a lot of the characters grated on me, quite a bit。 I'm hoping that if I read the next one, they become less annoying 😅But all in all it was an ok/good read I read this on the suggestion from my partner as he is currently reading the series。 It's not something I normally pick up to read but I did enjoy most of it。 Although, I will admit a lot of the characters grated on me, quite a bit。 I'm hoping that if I read the next one, they become less annoying 😅But all in all it was an ok/good read 。。。more
