Love this book! So fun and imaginative, and a great jump-off point for conversations with kids。 I also love seeing Mr。 McGee and his little dog, Dee。

This book is about a young designer, Jack, who verbally crafts a dream car。 Proudly unveiling to his bemused dad and dog a domed, finned, two-toned sedan that combines spiffy features of classic Cadillacs and Jetsons-era styling—plus pool, sofa, snack machine, a robot at the wheel and the ability to be a boat, a submarine or a rocket。 After a tour of the ritzy interior, Robert the Robot starts up the motor and Jack and his dad set off on the wildest test-drive ever。The illustrations in this book This book is about a young designer, Jack, who verbally crafts a dream car。 Proudly unveiling to his bemused dad and dog a domed, finned, two-toned sedan that combines spiffy features of classic Cadillacs and Jetsons-era styling—plus pool, sofa, snack machine, a robot at the wheel and the ability to be a boat, a submarine or a rocket。 After a tour of the ritzy interior, Robert the Robot starts up the motor and Jack and his dad set off on the wildest test-drive ever。The illustrations in this book are what make it come to life。 Van Dusen portrays it all in bright, 1950s colors, adding a shiny-featured lad and giving every surface, even the dog’s nose, a plastic sheen。This book was a great read。 Not only was it great to hear about all the different ideas this kid had, but it allows younger readers to do the same and use their imaginations to dream big。 Infectious rhythm and clever invention make this wonderful read-aloud a launch pad for imaginative fun。 。。。more

I cannot rave about Chris Van Dusen’s illustrations enough。 His vibrant and shiny style yells for attention in an non-obnoxious way。 This was the first of his books he himself authored we’ve been able to read and it was marvelous! Enjoyed by one and all in our family。 It nurtured curiosity and creativity in a beautiful way。 Highly recommended for 2 and up。

Can’t believe this book is 15 years old! Still fresh and fun like the others in the series, for those who remember Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Jack’s car is all that but on steroids!

The author says his inspiration for those books was Dr。 Seuss's "If I had a Circus。" Only this story is about a little inventor who dreams of building his fantasy car, complete with fancy accessories like a pool and a snack bar。 This book rhymes and has lovely art artwork。 After seeing the car page by page, we are swept up in a joyride with Jack and his dad。To listen to my interview with the author, go to my podcast at:https://zibbyowens。com/transcript/chr。。。 The author says his inspiration for those books was Dr。 Seuss's "If I had a Circus。" Only this story is about a little inventor who dreams of building his fantasy car, complete with fancy accessories like a pool and a snack bar。 This book rhymes and has lovely art artwork。 After seeing the car page by page, we are swept up in a joyride with Jack and his dad。To listen to my interview with the author, go to my podcast at:https://zibbyowens。com/transcript/chr。。。 。。。more

This was so fun, with 50s futuristic-style illustrations and some great ideas for how to make a car if the possibilities were endless! My son immediately started talking about how he would make his car and asking for help building it when he had it planned out。 Very inspiring for children!

I love this book! The main character Jack tells his dad about all the amazing, outlandish, innovative features he would add if he were to build a car。I would use this book anywhere from K-6, because it can appeal to any audience。 It's a fantastic book about using your imagination, and what you could invent if you were not limited。 I feel like it really helps students think outside the box。 This could be used in an ELA class to expand literary imagination, or in an engineering class to get studen I love this book! Fun idea and great way to get kids thinking creatively。 What would you include in your own design for a special car? The text is rhyme based which is usually not my favorite, but it was done pretty well here。 The illustrations give a strong sense of setting with the fifties futuristic style, pretty fun。 I did notice that there were quite a few illustrations with characters with their “bottoms” sticking out which was kind of weird to me but whatever。 My favorite part was actually the authors dedi Fun idea and great way to get kids thinking creatively。 What would you include in your own design for a special car? This book is great but I never get to read all of it。 We just flip to a few pages and talk about them for like 15 minutes, particularly a page that shows a conveyor belt full of all sorts of food。 If you are reading with a toddler who loves to talk and share opinions and practice making conversation and sentences, this one is great。 However, if you are the type of person who always wants to read all the words, you'll probably get frustrated because it's hard (at least in my case) to get through This book is great but I never get to read all of it。 We just flip to a few pages and talk about them for like 15 minutes, particularly a page that shows a conveyor belt full of all sorts of food。 If you are reading with a toddler who loves to talk and share opinions and practice making conversation and sentences, this one is great。 However, if you are the type of person who always wants to read all the words, you'll probably get frustrated because it's hard (at least in my case) to get through the amount of words on the page before an anxious little boy wants to turn the pages to find the ones he likes the most。 As an adult, I do like how many new concepts and words are introduced here。 。。。more

I introduced our son to the library at a very young age。 His method of picking books was very unconventional to say the least。 I'd categorize it as a "smash and grab" and by the time the car came to a complete stop (he about did a tuck-and-roll out the door) to his arrival at the check out desk with the max number of books was under 10 minutes。 It was always such a surprise as to what came out of his book bag at bed time, If I Built a Car was one of those "carefully mulled over and selected book I introduced our son to the library at a very young age。 His method of picking books was very unconventional to say the least。 I'd categorize it as a "smash and grab" and by the time the car came to a complete stop (he about did a tuck-and-roll out the door) to his arrival at the check out desk with the max number of books was under 10 minutes。 It was always such a surprise as to what came out of his book bag at bed time, If I Built a Car was one of those "carefully mulled over and selected books。" When we read, really analyzed the drawings, noticing that the front illustration of him in the car starting the story to the last drawing of him finishing the story they'd traveled about a block (tree size) was one。 We bought the book and it will be saved for future generations。 。。。more
