Summary

Who will win the battle between Dragons and Giants?

As the war with the dragons intensifies, all eyes are turning to Titan Valley for help。 A dragon sanctuary unlike any of the others, this one is home to enslaved dragons ruled by the powerful Giant Queen, one of the five monarchs of the magical world。 In addition, it houses the arena for the Titan Games, a series of gladiator-style battles presided over by none other than Humbuggle, the demon who stole Seth’s memories!

Seth is seeking for his memories。 Kendra is seeking for Seth。 And everyone is seeking to stop the dragons from taking over the world—everyone but Ronodin, the dark unicorn, who has his own devious agenda。 In the monstrous battle between giants and dragons, who wins? In the race to retrieve a magical talisman that could help win the war, can Kendra trust Seth? Will they find the answers they desperately need in a realm of trolls and titans? Or are more betrayals imminent?

I liked this book I think better than all the other ones in this series, but it was a little slow for some parts。 I loved all the twists and turns this book gave me, but I was left with a small part of me wanting something better。 Besides that, I would have given it 5 stars。 The ending was surprising but wasn't at the same time。 As if I had known all along but hadn't consciously thought about it。 Overall this was a great book and a great read。 I liked this book I think better than all the other ones in this series, but it was a little slow for some parts。 I loved all the twists and turns this book gave me, but I was left with a small part of me wanting something better。 Besides that, I would have given it 5 stars。 The ending was surprising but wasn't at the same time。 As if I had known all along but hadn't consciously thought about it。 Overall this was a great book and a great read。 。。。more

3/5 stars — poorly paced and has a few series-wide issues, but entertaining overallThe fourth installment of the Dragonwatch series suffered from serious middle-book syndrome。 This was disappointing, since the fourth book in the Fablehaven series was my favorite! Maybe I've truly outgrown the series (I read Fablehaven when it released and I was an older teen then, so I was already older than the target audience), but it feels more like this second quintet has jumped the shark。 Middle-grade reade 3/5 stars — poorly paced and has a few series-wide issues, but entertaining overallThe fourth installment of the Dragonwatch series suffered from serious middle-book syndrome。 This was disappointing, since the fourth book in the Fablehaven series was my favorite! Maybe I've truly outgrown the series (I read Fablehaven when it released and I was an older teen then, so I was already older than the target audience), but it feels more like this second quintet has jumped the shark。 Middle-grade readers, to whom the books are meant to appeal, will probably still enjoy them!If you've read any of my other Fablehaven/Dragonwatch reviews, you'll know I've been critical of some racism and gender-role issues that have been constants through both series。 This book is no exception; an incomplete list of themes/plot elements I disliked are as follows。- the big one for this book: slavery。 Kendra and her cohort end up in a tenuous alliance with the Giant Queen, who keeps dozens (maybe hundreds?) of dragons, who are known to be sentient people, as slaves。 It's a "the enemy of my enemy" situation—Celebrant and his fellow dragon army are determined to kill Kendra and her allies and take over the world—but it's not unpacked beyond the fact that the dragons are mad about it。 Further, there's a nasty little scene where Seth goes undercover as a hermit troll's "slave。" "Servant" would've been more than adequate, in my opinion。- the phrase "reeked of unsavory spices" likely also reeks of racism to any non-white person who's had the experience of bringing a home-packed lunch to school and having white peers squeal in disgust。 Which spices are 'unsavory,' I wonder?- "Most dragons are quite savage。" Let's remove that last word from our personal lexicons, since it's always racially charged and often weaponized against Indigenous people。- "they found a splendid set of double doors designed in a distinctively Asian style"。。。with a gong nearby, of course。 These books have a history of Asian fetishisation and a tendency to to lump Asian cultures together for "exotic" appeal。 Distinctively Asian style is not a thing。- There's a super creepy moment where Bracken literally rests his hand on Kendra's neck in what's presumably meant to be comfort。 Kendra's a high-school-age teen and Bracken's a centuries-old immortal man。 This should be self-explanatory。 - further gender-roles nonsense: "'I don't like leaving Vanessa behind,' Warren said。 'It feels like we lost our adult。' 'Kendra can step up,' Tanu said lightly。" To be clear, Warren and Tanu are adult men the same age as Vanessa, and Kendra is a literal child。 But of course the women/girls have to be the responsible ones。 - Seth and Kendra's young cousins Knox and Tess are basically mini copies of them, right down to Knox's recklessness saving the day and Tess's kindness and relationship with fairies providing advantages。 What was the point of including them if they weren't going to invert/subvert the original pair's roles or do anything new? I can't say that I recommend this book or this series, whether to kids or anybody else。 I DO advise discussing some of the above issues with your child(ren) if you're a parent whose kid(s) are reading these books。 Unfortunately, I'm a completionist and I'll definitely be picking up the final book when it's published。 。。。more

It is always darkest before the dawn。 Seth is such a precious fellow。 The loss of his memories was a blessing for a time but now their burden is too great。 How will Seth redeem himself? I hope he puts Celebrant and Ronodin in their place! I hope the next book is out soon!

Natalie

Predictable but enjoyable。 I am looking forward to the final book to see how they can wrap all this up in one more book, it seems like it is a tall order。

Danny

Really enjoyed this one! I loved the adventure, had the most feels yet for Vanessa, and was legit surprised at certain plot points。 For sure left me wanting more! I really enjoy Seth without his memories and the titan games were fun to experience with him。

A worthy next book in an excellent (although not my favorite of all time like some people are saying) world。 I miss the conflicted Seth from the last book but at least he's using his shadow powers properly now。 The Titan Games are quite interesting, as was the backstory at the end。 Looking forward to the next book when it finally comes out! I really love Brandon Mull's writings。 He such a good story teller, and I can't wait to see where the story is going。 The one thing I hate about these books is they totally leave you hanging, and you have to wait until the next one is released before you can continue the story。 I really love Brandon Mull's writings。 He such a good story teller, and I can't wait to see where the story is going。 The one thing I hate about these books is they totally leave you hanging, and you have to wait until the next one is released before you can continue the story。 。。。more

Książka bardzo fajna (jak poprzednie częsci) martwi mnie jednak to że autor wprowadza dokładnie takie same wątki jak w Baśnioborze co trochę psuje oryginalność książki。

This was a really good book。 I really liked it because of all the action and adventure。 I would recommend this book to anyone who has read the Fablehaven series。

When I read the third book in this series, I thought I was reading the last of a trilogy。 When I read this, the fourth book, I thought I was reading the last of a quartet。 Silly me。 I didn’t realize until I got to the end of this one that there will be one more。 Still, I thoroughly enjoyed this addition to the ongoing story of Kendra and Seth, each on their own journey in the quest to stop the dragon rebellion and war against humanity。 Seth has broken away from Ronondin, the evil unicorn, and is When I read the third book in this series, I thought I was reading the last of a trilogy。 When I read this, the fourth book, I thought I was reading the last of a quartet。 Silly me。 I didn’t realize until I got to the end of this one that there will be one more。 Still, I thoroughly enjoyed this addition to the ongoing story of Kendra and Seth, each on their own journey in the quest to stop the dragon rebellion and war against humanity。 Seth has broken away from Ronondin, the evil unicorn, and is determined to get his memories back。 This leads him to Titan Valley where he must do some detective work behind the scenes of the games in order to track down what happened to his memories。 Along the way, he encounters another bundle of memories severed from their body and names it “Reggie。” This was a particularly brilliant bit of story writing and filled with the usual humor that Brandon Mull is so good at。 Kendra and her group also come to Titan Valley, to look for Seth and also to try to develop an alliance of sorts with the giants there。 The giants have enslaved dragons on their island and are overconfident of their control over the beasts, which does not bode well。 Ronondin enters back into the story, as well as the dwarf Humbuggle (hope I got that right) who is the originator of the games。 As usual, the story ends with the resolution of some things, but with a cliffhanger of sorts。 Looking forward to the next one! 。。。more

I am held hostage by this book series! I read the first one when I was like 10 & now I have to go to the library’s kids section in quiet shame each time a new one is released。 That being said, it was okay。 Dragonwatch isn’t as good as Fablehaven。

This is going to be a rough review。 With every book I love this series all the more。 Granted, that isn’t surprising when we look at how much I loved Fablehaven and The Five Kingdoms。 Brandon Mull very rarely disappoints。 First and fore most as a middle school book I would give this 4。5 stars。 It was exciting with great characters and fun adventures。 Wonderful world building and unique creatures。 As an adult reading this book, I’d give it 3 stars。 Kendra falls a bit flat in this one。 She does thi This is going to be a rough review。 With every book I love this series all the more。 Granted, that isn’t surprising when we look at how much I loved Fablehaven and The Five Kingdoms。 Brandon Mull very rarely disappoints。 First and fore most as a middle school book I would give this 4。5 stars。 It was exciting with great characters and fun adventures。 Wonderful world building and unique creatures。 As an adult reading this book, I’d give it 3 stars。 Kendra falls a bit flat in this one。 She does things that feel a bit out of character and here personality is a bit even throughout。 Then again, this book is all about Seth and what a ride it is! Seth meets some great new characters, my favorite being Reggie, and goes on some grand adventures。 He really flushes out the story but that also means that the book is more character driven than plot and that isn’t necessarily a good thing。 Still, it’s a lot of fun。 Like most of Mull’s works this book tends to just keep the wheels spinning rather than actually resolve anything。 There is no real climax to the book (or ending for that matter)。 It definitely suffers from middle book syndrome。 That isn’t to say that it isn’t a good book。 I thoroughly enjoyed it。 It is just not as good as it could be。 Mull is extremely talented and can really elevate his work when he truly wants to and with just a bit more character depth, and a tangible build up。 Overall, I loved this book because I adore the characters and the series as a whole。 。。。more

This series doesn’t disappoint, and Champion of the Titan Games was no exception。 I always gets sucked into the world and feel like I’m really meeting all who Seth and Kendra meet。 These books always feel more complex and realistic than other middle-grade books, but this one in particular had more twists and humor than usual; I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed it as a young adult。 This fourth book sets up nicely for the final book to this two part series; I can’t wait to see the pe This series doesn’t disappoint, and Champion of the Titan Games was no exception。 I always gets sucked into the world and feel like I’m really meeting all who Seth and Kendra meet。 These books always feel more complex and realistic than other middle-grade books, but this one in particular had more twists and humor than usual; I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed it as a young adult。 This fourth book sets up nicely for the final book to this two part series; I can’t wait to see the people Seth and Kendra become! 。。。more
